Faradaic capacitive deionization (CDI), which exploits pseudo-capacitive electrodes, is an appealing water-purification candidate from low-salinity desalinated water due to its fast Faradaic electro-sorption and ion intercalations. However, current Faradaic CDI faces the challenge in low salt adsorption capacity and poor selective sodium-ion (Na + ) applicability. Herein, amorphous ferric phosphate (FePO 4 )-anchored on three-dimensional macro-porous Ti 3 C 2 T x network (3D FePO 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T x ) electrode is proposed without scarifying Ti 3 C 2 T x electronic conductivity, wherein sodium-ion captured FePO 4 provided abundant Na + adsorption site for enhancing desalination capacity and Na + selectivity. Simultaneously, highly-interconnected channels accelerated electron/ion transport to enable effective Na + intercalation in electro-sorption. Accordingly, the assembled FePO 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T x //activated carbon (AC) asymmetric CDI device delivered a typical Na + -intercalated behavior with high desalination capacity of 65 mg g −1 , in which electric current generation could power a blue light-emitting diode (LED) screen. Importantly, the asymmetric CDI device enabled an evident Na + selectivity over the Al 3+ with high separator factor up to 6.3 in binary mixture feed of Na + and Al 3+ . This study offers a new idea to achieve high desalination performance and sodium-ion selectivity via 3D framework supported ions-capture structure in seawater desalination.

Copper slag (CS) contains a high content of valuable iron, the stockpile of CS occupies a large amount of land and leads to a waste of secondary resources. This study proposed producing battery-grade FePO 4 ·2H 2 O from CS through selective leaching, synthesis, and purification. The combined acid leaching/evaporation method was used to leach out Fe and inhibit Si from fayalite selectively, and then FePO 4 ·2H 2 O was formed by adding Na 2 HPO 4 ·12H 2 O without extra pH adjustment. The purity of FePO 4 ·2H 2 O obtained by using a reactor heated for 5 h at 180 ℃ with an HCl concentration of 2.5 M was 99.47 %, and the impurities were all by the industry standard for battery-grade FePO 4 ·2H 2 O (HG/T 4701–2021). The LiFePO 4 /C material was further synthesized and tested for battery performance. Under the test current of 0.1C, the charging-specific capacity of the battery in the first week was 175.8 mAh/g, and the discharge-specific ability was 159.3 mAh/g, which was close to the theoretical specific capacity and effective. Life cycle assessment (LCA) indicated that for each 1 kg of iron phosphate produced, the carbon emission of this study was reduced by 4.71 kg CO 2 eq compared with the traditional technology.

High-performance ferric phosphate (FePO 4 ), with well-defined ellipsoid morphology and uniform particle size distribution , is successfully fabricated via a green spray drying method with formic acid as additive. It is found that the added formic acid plays a crucial role for the formation of the well-distributed FePO 4 particles. Benefited by the outstanding structure and properties of ferric phosphate prepared above, a high performance of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) has been prepared. It exhibits high capacity, especially at high charging/discharging rate (158.4 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and 107.3 mAh g −1 at 10 C), and excellent cycling stability (without capacity fading after cycling for 200cycles at 1 C). All these impressive electrochemical performance could be ascribed to the FePO 4 precursor, and further attributed to the addition of formic acid, which may play as a template, resulting in the well-defined morphology, uniform particles size distribution, hierarchical pore structure , and high surface area of the ferric phosphate.

The treatment of multi-component pollutants in wastewater is a challenge. In this work, a novel nanoscale magnetite/pyrite (Fe 3 O 4 /FeS 2 ) composite was successfully synthesized, characterized and applied in simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and phosphate. Transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Vibrating sample magnetometer , Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy , and X-ray diffraction analysis were applied in characterization of Fe 3 O 4 /FeS 2 composites. The comparative experiments among FeS 2 , Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 3 O 4 /FeS 2 for the removal of Cr(VI) and phosphate were carried out. The Fe 3 O 4 /FeS 2 composite with molar ratio of 1:4 exhibited remarkable performance on the removal of Cr(VI) and phosphate at initial pH 3.0. Compared with bare Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 3 O 4 /FeS 2 exhibited an enhanced removal of Cr(VI). Cr(VI) removal includes electrostatic attraction and reduction. The removal of phosphate was due to electrostatic attraction and the formation of FePO 4 precipitates. The efficient removal of Cr(VI) and phosphate and the great performance of solid-liquid separation show that Fe 3 O 4 /FeS 2 nanocomposite is a promising material for Cr(VI) and phosphate contaminated wastewater treatment.

Nanostructures with metallic crystalline cores and amorphous shells are recognized as promising catalysts for oxygen reduction (ORR) to enhance intrinsic activity and electroconductivity through strong interfacial interactions. Herein, a novel strategy involving crystallinity and nanostructure engineering is developed for constructing the amorphous ferric phosphate shell and the embedded crystalline Co2P core on three-dimensional interconnected carbon skeleton microspheres (Co2P@am-FePO4). Due to the excellent intrinsic activity and the enhanced electroconductivity from the strong electronic interactions between the amorphous ferric phosphate shell and crystalline Co2P core, the Co2P@am-FePO4 catalysts exhibit an excellent oxygen reduction electrocatalytic activity with a half wave potential as low as 0.91 V. More importantly, such excellent ORR performance can also translate to a high Zn–air performance as evidenced by a high specific energy density of 923 Wh/kgZn and maximum discharge power density of 152 mW/cm2.

Chemoselective hydrogenation of quinoline and its derivatives under mild reaction conditions still remains a challenging topic, which requires a suitable interaction between reactants and a catalyst to achieve high performance and stability. Herein, FePO4-supported Rh single atoms, subnano clusters and nanoparticle catalysts were synthesized and evaluated in the chemoselective hydrogenation of quinoline. The results show that the Rh subnano cluster catalyst with a size of ∼1 nm gives a specific reaction rate of 353 molquinoline molRh−1 h−1 and a selectivity of >99% for 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline under mild conditions of 50 °C and 5 bar H2, presenting better performance compared with the Rh single atoms and nanoparticle counterparts. Moreover, the Rh subnano cluster catalyst exhibits good stability and substrate universality for the hydrogenation of various functionalized quinolines. A series of characterization studies demonstrate that the acidic properties of the FePO4 support favors the adsorption of quinoline while the Rh subnano clusters promote the dissociation of H2 molecules, and then contribute to the enhanced hydrogenation performance. This work provides an important implication to design efficient Rh-based catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation under mild conditions.

Reasonable design of high-performance catalysts with heterojunction to suppress the combination of electron-hole pairs has become an appealing challenge in photocatalytic field. Herein, a novel hydrangea-like ZnIn 2 S 4 /FePO 4 with S-scheme heterojunction was constructed via an ultrasound-annealing process for photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The composites showed remarkable photocatalytic H 2 production performance (3.337 mmol h −1 g −1 ), which was approximately 7.5 times higher than that of blank ZnIn 2 S 4 (0.446 mmol h −1 g −1 ). The improved photocatalytic H 2 evolution was mainly ascribed to the accelerated electron-hole separation through the construction of S-scheme heterojunction in interface. Moreover, the hydrangea-like structure provided abundant active sites and huge specific surface area, which was conducive to the exceptional photocatalytic activity. Simultaneously, both experimental and Density Functional Theoretical calculation results provided strong evidence for the transfer path of photogenerated carriers following the S-scheme heterojunction, and the unique mechanism of photocatalytic H 2 production was proposed. In addition, the hydrangea-like ZnIn 2 S 4 /FePO 4 heterojunction photocatalyst showed a commendable stability with no distinct decrease after three cycle tests, demonstrating its potential as a recoverable photocatalyst. This work offered insights into the design and preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts with S-scheme heterojunction.

The recovery of high-purity iron phosphate (FePO 4 ) from lithium extraction slag (LES) is crucial for achieving closed-loop recycling of spent LiFePO 4 /C. However, this process is significantly challenged by the difficulty in removing aluminum impurities due to the similar chemical behavior of Fe 3+ and Al 3+ . Guided by thermodynamic principles, we developed a three-stage purification process for deep aluminum removal, consisting of “selective leaching-precipitation-dissolution/recrystallization.” In the first stage, highly selective aluminum leaching (96.3% Al vs. 21.6% Fe) is achieved under mild acidic conditions, leveraging the thermodynamic preference for aluminum dissolution over FePO 4 . During the second stage, by utilizing the tendency of Fe 3+ to precipitate more readily as FePO 4 ·xH 2 O than Al 3+ , precise pH control enables 95.5% iron precipitation, with only 4.02% aluminum coprecipitation. The third stage involves an in situ dissolution/recrystallization, which promotes efficient iron recrystallization (95%) while further removing residual aluminum, reducing its content by over 50% from an already low level. This enhancement is attributed to the higher crystallization tendency of FePO 4 ·2H 2 O compared to AlPO 4 ·2H 2 O. Ultimately, battery-grade FePO 4 with an aluminum content below 300 ppm is obtained. This work provides an industrially viable strategy for the deep removal of aluminum and the high-value utilization of LES derived from spent LiFePO 4 /C.

To satisfy the increasing global demand for the strategic metal lithium, recycling of LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries has become an irresistible trend and poses a challenge due to the cost. A low-cost process of recovering Li and FePO 4 from simulated spent LFP was investigated through a closed-loop coupling technology of isomorphic substitution leaching and solvent extraction . A total of 99.41% of Li + can be leached, and 96% of FePO 4 can be recovered with an Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 :LFP molar ratio of 1:6, H 2 SO 4 :LFP molar ratio of 0.5:1, and 0.4 ml H 2 O 2 /g LFP for 30 min. An eleven-stage extraction process for Fe 3+ removal from lixivium-containing extraction, stripping and regeneration processes was designed and optimized. The total removal efficiency of Fe 3+ was 97.22% by the 40 vt% N235 + 15 vt% TBP + kerosene extraction system at a phase ratio O/A of 3.5/1, and the lithium concentration in raffinate was 10.074 g·L −1 . The closed-coupling process was carried out on the simulated spent LFP with a total Li recovery efficiency of >99%. The low-cost leaching agent Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 was cyclically utilized. The coupling process can not only serve as a promising efficient recycling method for spent LFP batteries but also supply an inspiring route for other expensive metal recycling.

The exponential growth of the new energy vehicle market
has precipitated
an urgent demand for sustainable lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) precursors. While recovering iron phosphate (FePO 4 ) from phosphorus-rich wastewater presents a viable supply chain
solution, conventional precipitation and adsorption methodologies
are critically limited by low product purity and inefficient separation.
This study introduces an innovative electro-driven membrane separation
technology that employs Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 as the anode electrolyte to achieve simultaneous phosphorus concentration
and in situ FePO 4 recovery. The process exploits the electric
field to drive PO 4 3– migration into the
anode chamber, where it precipitates with Fe 3+ . Under the
optimized conditions, using a mixed Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 /Na 2 SO 4 anolyte and an activated-carbon-containing
catholyte at a current density of 2.6 A m –2 , the
system achieved phosphate removal and recovery efficiencies of 82.4%
and 74.1%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations, corroborated
by mass transport simulations, reveal that the continuous in situ
precipitation strategy effectively maintains a steep concentration
gradient. When applied to actual wastewater, the system yielded a
recovered FePO 4 product with a near-stoichiometric Fe/P
molar ratio of 0.99 and substantially lower cationic impurity levels
than those obtained by direct ferric-salt precipitation. The acidic
anodic environment and ion-selective membrane jointly limited the
association of coexisting cations with the recovered product and suppressed
the formation of Fe(OH) 3 impurities. The strategy addresses
the challenge of impurity incorporation and demonstrates the potential
for value-added FePO 4 precursor recovery from phosphorus-rich
wastewater.

The recycling of spent lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFPs) has enormous market potential and great significance for environmental protection and sustainable development. Notably, lithium extraction slag (LES) recovery is a critical link in the full-process recycling of spent LFPs, while existing technologies are often limited by low impurity separation efficiency, poor environmental compatibility, or high costs. Herein, this study innovatively integrated solvent extraction with LES recovery and proposed a method for efficient impurity separation and preparation of high-purity 2D flaky regenerated iron phosphate (R-FePO 4 ). Three extractant systems were evaluated for purifying LES leachate, and TBP-kerosene was identified as the optimal extractant composition with corresponding optimal operating conditions determined. Fe and P could be co-extracted, and under conditions of 80% TBP volume fraction ( φ TBP = 80%), 60 s extraction time, and initial phase ratio R = 3, their single-stage extraction efficiencies reached approximately 99.20% and 38.50%, respectively, with excellent impurity separation performance. After cascaded extraction, the maximum extraction efficiencies of Fe and P reached 100% and 82.60%, respectively. McCabe-Thiele diagrams for Fe and P were constructed to determine the theoretical number of stripping stages. After three-stage countercurrent stripping, the maximum mass concentrations of Fe and P in the stripping solution reached 29.20 and 17.23 g L −1 , respectively, while contents of impurities (Al, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Ti) remained extremely low. HCl and R-FePO 4 were recovered from the stripping solution via evaporation and chemical precipitation, respectively. XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and EDS characterizations verified that the product was 2D flaky FePO 4 . Chemical titration and ICP-OES analysis showed the Fe/P molar ratio of R-FePO 4 was 0.969, and its impurity content met requirements of multiple standards simultaneously. Collectively, these results confirm the successful recovery of high-purity 2D flaky R-FePO 4 from LES via this method, with the comprehensive recovery rates of Fe and P reaching nearly 100%. Cyclic performance tests of the extractant demonstrate its excellent regenerative performance. The economic and environmental performance of the proposed process was evaluated, revealing its enormous industrial application potential. Eventually, a novel technical process is provided for the LES recycling industry to achieve maximum resource utilization.

Coating with FePO4 with the size of 20–30 nm on the surface of a LiNi0.8Co0.10Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode produces an LFP3@NCM811 cathode via a sol–gel method, which markedly reduces secondary crystal cracking. A stable particle structure greatly improves the cycling stability of the LFP3@NCM811cathode, which retains 97% of its initial discharge capacity compared to NCM811 (78%) after 100 cycles at 2.7–4.5 V. Furthermore, it retains 86 and 63% of its initial discharge capacity after 400 cycles for LFP3@NCM811 and NCM811, respectively. The initial discharge capacity of the LFP3@NCM811 cathode is 218.8 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C, and the discharge capacity of the LFP3@NCM811 cathode is achieved to be 151.4 mAh g–1 at 5 C, which is 15 mAh g–1 higher than that of the NCM811 cathode. These are due to the reduction of cation mixing for a certain amount of Fe2+/Fe3+ or PO43– doped into the NCM811 surface, and the yolk–shell structure formed by coating with FePO4 helps improve the electronic conductivity and accelerate the Li+ transport. The cycling stability is mainly due to the secondary cleavage inhibition, which maintains the structural integrity of the cathode particles during the long cycle process and protects the inside of the particle from harmful electrolytes.
