Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production provides a solution to the problems of energy depletion and environmental pollution. Platinum has been considered as the best catalyst for this reaction; however, its practical application is limited by its high cost and scarcity. Here, we propose a high performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst comprising a single atomic layer of Pt decorated on an Au nanorod surface (AuNRs@SAC-Pt) using a method of underpotential deposition followed by chemical replacement reaction. This catalyst exhibits superior HER activity via maximized electronic interaction with the substrate and gold plasmonic hot carriers. To retain the stability, dispersion, and good conductivity of the catalyst, graphene was used as the support, forming a hybrid (rGO@AuNRs@SAC-Pt). The Pt single atomic layer structure can fully improve the atomic utilization of Pt, maximizing the electronic interaction with the Au substrate, which significantly promotes the HER catalytic performance. The mass activity of rGO@AuNRs@SAC-Pt is 14 times higher than that of the 20% commercial Pt/C catalyst. Meanwhile, the plasmonic hot electrons of AuNRs can further promote the HER performance of Pt single atom as revealed by the significantly decreased overpotential with laser illumination. This research provides new strategies and theoretical guidance for the design of HER catalysts with high atom utilization and excellent catalytic performance.

High-efficiency and economical electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting are the core component of the renewable energy conversion. Herein, a simple and economical strategy is described to synthesize a series of metal oxide decorated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes materials (N-CNT@Cu–Fe Oxide Alloy NPs) by utilizing carbon nanotubes as the substrate carrier material. Additionally, the polypyrrole (PPy) was served as both the nitrogen resource and the localizing agent to load the Cu–Fe oxide alloy. Moreover, the theoretical and test results indicated that the superior HER and ORR performance is mainly related to the synergistic effect between the nitrogen-doped CNT and metallic oxide alloy. In the series of catalysts we prepared, N-CNT@Cu 1 –Fe 1 Oxide Alloy NPs exhibits more significant catalytic activity and better durability than other catalysts that we synthesized. Meanwhile, the catalyst shows the low Tafel slope of 68.28 mV dec −1 for HER and reaches 10 mA cm −2 at the overpotential of 375 mV. The K–L plot shows that the electron transfer number of N–CNF@Cu 1 –Fe 1 Alloy NPs is 3.43.

It is a great challenge to induce the formation of the RuP 4 phase and realize the construction of a metal-rich phase/phosphorus-rich phase-ruthenium phosphide heterostructure by directional regulation of the proportion of P and metal atoms. The ultra-high conductivity of Ru 2 P and the excellent ability of V-doped RuP 4 to absorb/desorb H* are confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which laid a theoretical foundation for the construction of a unique Ru 2 P/V-RuP 4 structure to accelerate HER reaction kinetics. This work innovatively uses the V-doping strategy to induce the formation of RuP 4 phase with high intrinsic activity, and finally construct V-Ru x P y nanosheets with rich Ru/Ru 2 P/V-RuP 4 heterostructures. Thanks to the rich Ru/Ru 2 P/V-RuP 4 heterostructure and the optimization of V dopants, the V-Ru x P y catalyst only needs 180 mV to obtain an industrial-grade current density of 1 A cm −2 . In summary, this work provides a new idea for the design and performance optimization of ruthenium-based catalysts.

High purity H 2 formed by electrochemical water splitting is profound potential green energy. Exploiting advanced electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and base environment is of critical significance. Herein, we report a novel hybrid comprising stacked cobalt tungsten carbides nanocrystals on N-doping carbon matrix (Co 6 W 6 C–N@CNFs) as a superb HER catalyst over the entire pH range via facile electrospinning and CVD method. On account of its ultrathin size and the strong synergetic interaction between bimetals , coupled with the superior conductivity of N-doping CNFs , Co 6 W 6 C–N@CNFs presents superior catalytic properties , with low overpotentials of 86 and 116 mV at η 10 and small Tafel slopes of 85 and 101 mV dec −1 in acidic and alkali, respectively, as well as outstanding long-term stability, rivalling its potential to be used intensively in water electrolysis technologies.

The interfacial water structure is crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. However, the explicit relationship between the local interfacial water structure and the HER process remains elusive. Here, we engineer a hydrophilic–hydrophobic Ni-PTFE interface to modulate the interfacial water organization and enhance HER kinetics. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the Ni-PTFE composite significantly reduces the HER overpotential from 36 to 19 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , comparable to the performance of the precious metal catalyst Pt. In situ ATR-SEIRAS indicates that the proportion of H 2 O (above-gap) at the hydrophilic–hydrophobic Ni-PTFE interface increased from 36.6% to 50.5%, facilitating proton transfer and water dissociation. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrated that the hydrophobic PTFE rearranges interfacial water on the Ni surface into a wave-like distribution centered around the PTFE segments, leading to alternating water-rich and water-deficient regions that spatially differentiate active sites for water dissociation and H 2 detachment, respectively. The study offers an insight into enhancing HER performance through strategic hydrophobic modification aimed at regulating interfacial water structure.

2D composited nanosheets of Mo 2 C/CoMoS 4 are synthesized by a hydrothermal approach to obtain a bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in aqueous alkaline solution. Due to the richened defects formed on the 2D catalyst, the as-derived Mo 2 C/CoMoS 4 exhibits high activity. At 10 mA cm −2 , the HER and OER overpotentials of the 2D Mo 2 C/CoMoS 4 nanosheets are just 117 and 250 mV, respectively, with the corresponding Tafel slope of 90 and 75 mV dec −1 , near to the commercial Pt/C and IrO 2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy proves the strong interactions between Mo 2 C and CoMoS 4 and the Raman analysis certifies the presence of richened defects in Mo 2 C/CoMoS 4 . Moreover, the Mo 2 C/CoMoS 4 possesses a long-term catalytic stability, showing potential application in the water splitting.

Proton electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is a promising hydrogen generation method limited by the high cost, such as those costs associated with noble electrocatalysts. Herein, we investigate commercial tungsten carbide (WC), a potential substitute for Pt, as a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst in PEMWE. We adopted two sizes of WC, 400 nm and 1 μm, optimized the electrode fabrication method and running conditions. The results show that the smaller WC does not provide stable performance and operating at high current density and low temperature is more competitive with Pt-based electrolysis. In addition, the most serious drawback is the increased cell voltage on restart after long-term power-off due to considerable WC oxidation, which leads to a decrease in the catalytic carbide carbon. Luckily, this can be offset by effective O 2 isolation in the cathode, such as H 2 O sealing or pumping with H 2 . WC is an economic alternative as a HER electrocatalyst in PEMWE with optimized conditions and an O 2 isolation strategy during an interrupted operation. We provide a practical method to reduce the cost of the HER electrocatalyst.

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) holds substantial promise for effectively utilizing renewable energy to produce green hydrogen. However, it faces critical durability challenges due to acid-driven catalyst degradation under intermittent renewable power. Here, this study reports a dynamic dissolution-deposition equilibrium that achieves exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) stability through rational design of a high-entropy alloy-derived architecture. Dealloying FeCoNiNbPt HEA creates a porous scaffold with dual-functional components: an amorphous NbOx buffer suppressing metal dissolution, while multicomponent Pt 3 (FeCoNi) nanocrystals synergistically enhancing HER activity (137 mV@1 A cm −2 , 2.5 × lower than Pt/C) that thermodynamically favors redeposition. This dynamic self-adaptive mechanism maintains equilibrium under harsh operating conditions, demonstrating exceptional durability (>2200 h @1 A cm −2 and 1 000 000 cycles). The self-supported catalysts can be easily mass-produced with 8.87 wt.% Pt loading (60% reduction vs Pt/C), indicating its industrial applicability. The equilibrium-driven design paradigm opens new avenues for industrial proton-exchange-membrane devices operating under fluctuating power.

Platinum (Pt) is a highly efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). However, the scarcity of Pt necessitates the development of catalysts with low Pt content while maintaining high activity. In this study, we report the synthesis of oxygen-modified supra-nanometer-sized RuPt nanocrystals with low Pt content by a simple air annealing method to achieve a catalyst with high activity. The annealed catalyst, RuPt/C-200, exhibits a very low overpotential of only 3.8 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 16.6 mV dec−1, and a 2.8-fold increase in mass activity at an overpotential of 0.06 V for HER compared to the unannealed catalyst. Additionally, the HOR exchange current density increases 2.9-fold compared to the unannealed catalyst. AEMWE tests confirm the application potential of RuPt/C-200, while density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations reveal that oxygen modification, by optimizing the hydrogen binding energy, plays a crucial role in improving the catalytic performance of RuPt. This work highlights that combining the oxygen modification strategy with the nanoscale size effect could advance the development of high-performance RuPt electrocatalyst for both alkaline HER and HOR.

The HER requires a highly efficient, cost-effective, and stable catalyst to adapt to the large-scale hydrogen industry. Nickel has been confirmed to be useful to drive the water splitting reaction, but the intrinsic performance remains unsatisfactory. In this work, nickel (EG–Ni) with compressive strain was prepared through a one-step electrochemical deposition strategy. It shows an outstanding enhancement for the HER, and it achieves a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low overpotential of 85.9 mV. A long-term durability test proves that the EG–Ni can tolerate a large current density of 100 mA cm−2, and the overpotential remains steady without dramatically increasing. Such a low overpotential and superior stability are attributed to the optimized adsorption energy on the catalyst surface, as evidenced by the downshifted position of the d-band center.

The development of transition metal electrocatalysts with excellent HER, OER and HMFOR activity can accelerate the achievement of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. Herein, we report a simple structure modulation and morphological strategy for constructing Ni x Co y P-3 nanoneedles array with superhydrophilic/aerophobic surface. The small and well-dispersed nanoneedles can expose a larger electrochemical surface area. It has good mechanical stability, which can withstand the impact of violent bubbles at ampere-level current densities. Ni x Co y P-3 has a stronger H 2 O adsorption capacity than Ni 2 P, and can promote the adsorption and desorption of H* to facilitate the HER process. During the OER process, the formation of the Ni x Co y P-3/Ni x Co y OOH heterostructure is an important factor to stabilize oxygen evolution at ampere-level current densities. During the HMFOR process, Ni x Co y P-3 has a stronger HMF adsorption energy than Ni 2 P, and the generated FDCA can be desorbed from the Ni x Co y P-3 surface more easily. The overpotentials of the Ni x Co y P-3 are only 38.8 mV and 231.2 mV for HER and OER at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline medium. When in the 1.0 M KOH + 50 mM HMF, only 1.37 V was required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 of the Ni x Co y P-3 II Ni x Co y P-3 two-electrode system. Ni x Co y P-3 can drive 1000 mA cm −2 overall water splitting for 100 h of stable operation in 1 M KOH, validating its potential in industrial hydrogen production.

It is still challenging to design and synthesize highly efficient and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER). Herein, we developed an in-situ phosphating Co@nitrogen-doping graphene to obtain N and P co-doped carbon-coated cobalt phosphide (CoP@N,P C) that could be used for overall water splitting. The unique 3D porous structure of CoP@N,P C is characterized by a large number of active catalytic sites. High wettability of catalyst in electrolyte solution facilitates the transfer of ions. The synergism between the CoP cores and N, P C shells improves the total hydrolysis performance of the electrocatalyst during the HER and OER. At the current densities of 10 mA/cm 2 (1 M of KOH), the HER overpotential recorded for the CoP@N,P C is 113 mV, and the OER overpotential is 320 mV. The cell voltage of the CoP@N,P C as bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting is 1.67 V (at 10 mA/cm 2 ), which is close to that of the full noble-metal electrode (RuO 2 || Pt/C, 1.58 V). The CoP@N, P C bifunctional catalyst can be potentially used to replace noble-metal electrodes to realize water splitting.
