Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of acidic Al-MCM-41 for enhanced selective production of HMF from glucose

Haoran Li,Qisong Yi,Yuanchao Shao,Haimei Xu,Zichun Wang,Yuanshuai Liu

The sustainable transformation of renewable biomass into value-added chemicals is essential to addressing global environmental and energy challenges. Among these, the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from biomass-derived glucose is of considerable interest for both scientific and industrial applications. In this study, mesoporous aluminium incorporated MCM-41 catalysts (Al-MCM-41) were synthesized using an ultrasonic-assisted method at room temperature. Their ordered mesoporous structure was preserved even with high concentrations of Al. The catalysts' acidity was finely tuned by varying the Si/Al ratio, enabling the development of an optimal catalyst to enhance the glucose-to-HMF conversion via Brønsted and Lewis acid catalysis. Characterization techniques, including XRD, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR, 29 Si and 27 Al MAS NMR, were employed to evaluate the catalysts’ structure and acidity. The results revealed that ultrasonic-assisted synthesis strategy improves Al dispersion, optimizes acid site density, and significantly enhances HMF yield and selectivity. The best-performing Al-MCM-41-10 catalyst can afford ∼90 % glucose conversion with ∼60 % HMF selectivity at 160 °C, and displays excellent reusability under the applied reaction conditions. This study provides valuable insights into designing efficient catalysts for biomass conversion and underscores the broad applicability of the ultrasonic-assisted synthesis method for other heteroatom-doped mesoporous materials, such as Sn-MCM-41.

Effects of baking factors and recipes on the quality of butter cookies and the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)

Huiyu Hu,Yuting Wang,Mingyue Shen,Yousheng Huang,Chang Li,Shaoping Nie,Mingyong Xie

Maillard reaction during food processing contributes to the formation of some unpleasant heat-induced toxicants including advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which have been linked to various health risks. The effects of baking factors and recipes, such as baking temperature (130°C–180 °C) and time (8 min–15 min), sucrose levels (0 g–20 g), butter levels (0 g–20 g) and egg liquid levels (0 g–12 g) on the formation of free N ε -(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), free N ε -(carboxyethyl)lysine (CEL), protein-bound CML, protein-bound CEL, HMF, glyoxal (GO), methylglyoxal (MGO), 3-deoxyglucosone (3-DG) and on the sensory qualities were investigated in butter cookies. The results suggested that the levels of AGEs initially increased and then followed by decrease as baking temperature and time increased, HMF is very sensitive to baking temperature and time and grows sharply. The changes of protein-bound AGEs are lagging behind that of free AGEs. The proportions of sucrose, butter and egg liquid in butter cookies were positively correlated with AGEs, with sucrose greatly promoting on the formation of HMF and 3-DG. In addition, the high level of sucrose and butter in cookies is preferred by panelists, especially in terms of appearance, taste and smell.

A general strategy for the preparation of transition metal carbon aerogel catalysts for efficient electro-oxidative valorization of HMF

Wei Zhao,Mengyuan Qiu,Yajun Liu,Yingrui Dong,Xiaojing Huang,Siyue Li,Feifei Lin,Yongzhi Xiong,Changzhou Chen

The lack of high-performance, low-cost electrocatalysts is the key challenge for the production of 2,5 furandicarboxylic acid via electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In this work, we report a novel approach for the preparation of highly dispersible transition metal catalysts loaded by carbon aerogel-loaded via a chitosan-transition-metal-ion coordination. The experimental results demonstrated that all of Ni 2+ , Co 2+ and Cu 2+ were able to coordinate with chitosan to form stable gels, which were then pyrolyzed to obtain highly dispersed transition metal-based catalysts (Co@NC, Ni@NC and Cu@NC) The Cu@NC exhibited the best HMFOR activity with high HMF conversion (nearly 100 %), FDCA selectivity (98.1 %), and Faraday efficiency (95.3 %). Mechanistic studies showed that Cu@NC was able to accumulate more effective oxidatively active species and thus achieve higher HMFOR current density compared to Co@NC and Ni@NC, and that the electrooxidation of HMF at the Cu@NC electrode followed the HMFCA oxidation pathway. This study provides a general and facile strategy for macropreparation of highly dispersible carbon aerogel-loaded transition metal catalysts for efficient electrocatalytic valorization of HMF.

Direct conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using an efficient and inexpensive boehmite catalyst

Zhe Tang,Jianhui Su

High efficiency conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) remains a challenge today. A simple solid acid catalyst Boehmite (γ-AlOOH) with high hydrothermal stability was prepared and used as sole catalyst for the direct conversion of cellulose into HMF in mixed reaction solvents of ionic liquid 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmimCl) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). This was aimed at developing an efficient and inexpensive catalyst for the production of HMF. The effects of factors such as water, solvent, catalyst load, temperature and reaction duration were investigated. An impressive HMF yield of 58.4% with 97.2% cellulose conversion was obtained at 160 °C after 2 h. More importantly, the catalyst γ-AlOOH was reused several times without loss of its catalytic properties. After five reaction runs, an HMF yield of 47.8% with 91.0% conversion was also obtained. In addition, the catalyst γ-AlOOH displayed excellent catalytic effects on the degradation of other carbohydrates. High yields of HMF from other carbohydrates such as glucose (61.2%), starch (62.7%) and inulin (70.5%) were achieved using γ-AlOOH as the catalyst. The proposed catalytic method shows a promising potential for HMF preparation, especially for industrial-scale HMF production from renewable bioresources.

Facet effect on the reconstructed Cu-catalyzed electrochemical hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethy)furan (BHMF)

Mengxia Li,Tianxi Zheng,Dongfei Lu,Shiwei Dai,Xin Chen,Xinchen Pan,Dibo Dong,Rengui Weng,Gang Xu,Fanan Wang

The electrochemical hydrogenation of HMF to BHMF is an elegant alternative to the conventional thermocatalytic route for the production of high-value-added chemicals from biomass resources. In virtue of the wide potential window with promising Faradic efficiency (FE) towards BHMF, Cu-based electrode has been in the center of investigation. However, its structure–activity relationship remains ambiguous and its intrinsic catalytic activity is still unsatisfactory. In this work, we develop a two-step oxidation–reduction strategy to reconstruct the surface atom arrangement of the Cu foam (CF). By combination of multiple quasi-situ/in-situ techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the critical factor that governs the reaction is demonstrated to be facet effect of the metallic Cu crystal: Cu(110) facet accounts for the most favorable surface with enhanced chemisorption with reactants and selective production of BHMF, while Cu(100) facet might trigger the accumulation of the by-product 5,5′-bis(hydroxymethy)hydrofurion (BHH). With the optimized composition of the facets on the reconstructed Cu(OH) 2 -ER/CF, the performance could be noticeably enhanced with a BHMF FE of 92.3% and HMF conversion of 98.5% at a potential of −0.15 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH solution. This work sheds light on the incomplete mechanistic puzzle for Cu-catalyzed electrochemical hydrogenation of HMF to BHMF, and provides a theoretical foundation for further precise design of highly efficient catalytic electrodes.

One-pot conversion of cellulose to HMF under mild conditions through decrystallization and dehydration in dimethyl sulfoxide/tetraethylammonium chloride

Qinrui Du,Xusheng Guo,Haoxiang Zhu,Youwei Cheng,Lijun Wang,Xi Li

As a crucial bio-based platform chemical, the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from the abundant substrate cellulose has garnered significant attention. However, tedious reaction steps are inevitable because of the complex tandem conversions of dissolution, hydrolysis, and dehydration. Furthermore, due to the ultralow solubility of cellulose, harsh reaction conditions are inevitable, which can exacerbate HMF degradation. To this end, we investigated the structural changes in microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) after its dissolution and regeneration in various dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to clarify the mechanisms underlying its dissolution. The results revealed that the highly crystalline cellulose I in MCC was converted into amorphous cellulose II after treatment with DMSO/tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC), which led to the complete dissolution of MCC. Accordingly, a dissolution-catalysis coupling reaction strategy was proposed for converting MCC to HMF via a one-pot method in DMSO/TEAC, simultaneously reducing the number of steps necessary for the reaction and achieving mild reaction conditions. In addition, the pathway for the one-pot reaction was clarified by analyzing the intermediate yields. The combination of AlCl 3 as a catalyst and DMSO/TEAC resulted in a notable MCC conversion of 93.3 wt% and a high HMF yield of 53.1%. Remarkably, the reaction conditions employed in this study (130 °C, 1 h) were milder in terms of shorter reaction times and lower temperatures than those reported in most current literature. This was attributed to the complete dissolution of MCC resulting from decrystallization. Therefore, the proposed reaction strategy enabled the efficient production of HMF from cellulose.

Efficient conversion of HMF to FDMC utilizing gold-based poly(ionic liquid)s with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion

Yaping Liu,Chao Pan,Xianjie Li,Hailin Zhang,Zhijie Shang,Hongbing Song

Oxidation, a pivotal process in organic synthesis, is essential for the conversion of various biomass derivatives, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), into valuable chemicals. This research employs poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) as supports to fabricate Au/PILs catalysts, which are subsequently utilized in the oxidative esterification of HMF to produce dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (FDMC). The modification of PILs demonstrates that catalyst’s performance is optimized when the PILs anion (IL: EGDMA = 1: 4) is [Tf 2 N - ]. The presence of the [Tf 2 N - ] group is essential for charge transfer between the carrier and the active metal Au, thereby enhancing the catalytic reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) reveals the exceptional thermal stability of the 2 % Au/PILs-Tf 2 N-14 catalyst. The efficient conversion of HMF to FDMC is achieved using the 2 % Au/PILs-Tf 2 N-14 catalyst at 120°C, 12 h, with CH 3 ONa (0.75 equiv.) and 2 MPa O 2 , yielding a HMF conversion ( C HMF ) of 96.41 % and a FDMC selectivity ( S FDMC ) of 100 %. The heterogeneous catalyst 2 % Au/PILs-Tf 2 N-14 maintains high catalytic activity after multiple cycling experiments. A catalyst based on precious metal-loaded PILs was utilized to achieve efficient and selective conversion of HMF to FDMC under low loading conditions. This approach not only offers valuable insights for future research but also promotes the shift towards renewable energy sources. Additionally, the adsorption behavior of O 2 on Au 8 clusters and the interaction between the reaction substrate HMF and [Tf 2 N - ] were examined through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, providing theoretical backing for further investigation.

Acid-Base Bifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks: Green Synthesis and Application in One-Pot Glucose to 5-HMF Conversion

Yunlei Zhang,Pei Jin,Minjia Meng,Lin Gao,Meng Liu,Yongsheng Yan

The direct synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with acidic and basic active sites is challenging due to the introduction of functional groups by post-functionalization method often jeopardize the framework integrity. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs with tuning acid-base strength. Employing modulated hydrothermal (MHT) approach, microporous MOFs named UiO-66-NH 2 was prepared. Through the ring-opening reaction of 1,3-propanesultone with amino group, UiO-66-NH 2 -SO 3 H-type catalysts can be obtained. The synthesized catalysts were well characterized and their catalytic performances were evaluated in one-pot glucose to 5-HMF conversion. Results revealed the acid-base bi-functional catalyst possessed high activity and excellent stability. This work provides a general and economically viable approach for the large-scale synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs for their potential use in catalysis field.

Substrate molecule adsorption energy: An activity descriptor for electrochemical oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)

Yuechao Yang,Danxia Xu,Baolong Zhang,Zhimin Xue,Tiancheng Mu

Electrochemical oxidation of alcohol and aldehyde to carboxylic acids is one of the most important classes of catalytic reaction. The key point for such reactions lies in the fine tailoring the catalysts to improve the reaction and energy efficiency. For such a destination, identifying descriptors which are highly related to the catalytic efficiency is a prerequisite for designing electrocatalysts. In this work, taking 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a biomass derived platform molecule containing alcohol and aldehyde, as the main research object, we revealed for the first time that the adsorption energy of substrate molecule is an activity descriptor for electrochemical alcohol and aldehyde oxidation. Too weak substrate adsorption is not favorable to C–H/O–H bond activation and dissociation, while too strong substrate adsorption hinders the formation of enough OH ads (an important intermediate) due to the competitive adsorption of substrate molecules and OH – at limited reaction sites. The optimal catalytic activity can be achieved by adjusting the adsorption energy of substrate molecules to make them properly adsorbed on the catalyst surface. This work not only offers a guideline for the design of advanced catalysts towards the electrochemical alcohol and aldehyde oxidation (e.g., methanol, ethanol, benzyl alcohol, glycerol, glucose, furfural and HMF) for the utilization and production of renewable resources, but also benefits the design of other electrochemical catalysts.

Low-Temperature Plasma Modification of Lignin-Derived Carbon Solid Acid Catalyst for Catalytic Production of 5-HMF

Lv Shijun,Deng Xiaoya,Zhu Peiwen,Ruan Lingyu,Tao Yuheng,Wang Liqun,Zhu Jie,Qing Qing

Sulfonated carbon catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance for production of biobased chemicals, but the catalyst preparation approaches are still suffered from high corrosion and possible pollution risks. In this paper, lignin extracted from corn stover was used to prepare lignin-based activated carbon, which was then subjected to grafting modification by sulfur dioxide nonthermal plasma method to construct a novel lignin-derived solid acid catalyst (LP-LDSA). The catalytic performances of LP-LDSA were further determined by dehydration of fructose to produce 5-HMF in a biphasic solvent system composed by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water. Under the optimal conditions, the 5-HMF yield and reaction selectivity were 88.9% and 89.4%, respectively. This LP-LDSA catalyst also exhibited excellent stability and reusability in five sequential reaction batches. This method has advantages of shorter solid acid preparation duration, lower energy consumption, and higher catalytic stability, presenting an innovative and green method for sulfonation production of solid acid catalyst. Miao Zuo,Qiang Niu,Yanzhong Zhu,Sijin Li,Wenlong Jia,Zheng Zhou,Xianhai Zeng,Lu Lin

This study prepared a series of biochar-based catalysts using different parts of Larix principis-rupprechtii as feedstock , to promote the 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) synthesis from glucose and fructose. Sulfonated biochar showed high converting efficiency of fructose in both dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and aqueous-natural deep eutectic solvent (A-NADES) reaction systems, with HMF yield of 96.3% prepared from the pine needle-derived acidic catalyst under mild condition. Bifunctional acidic biochar catalysts containing both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid functional groups could effectively enhance the glucose conversion with 57.2% of the HMF yield obtained in A-NADES. After the detailed characterization of the biochar catalysts, the potential mechanism of the bifunctional catalyst for the synthesis of HMF by conversion of glucose and fructose was proposed. The possible promoting mechanism of carbohydrate conversion by A-NADES through intermolecular hydrogen bonding was also explored.

Defective MIL-53(Al)-NH2: A bifunctional Lewis-Brønsted acid catalyst for efficient 5-HMF production from glucose

Mengjiao Yu,Xiong-Fei Zhang,Siting Yang,Yunhua Bai,Zhongguo Wang,Jianfeng Yao

Developing functional catalysts with both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites is an essential task for achieving the direct conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a process that is crucial for the sustainable production of renewable fuels and chemicals. In this work, a mixed-linker strategy is proposed to prepare defective MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 by introducing trifluoroacetic acid into the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 synthesis process. The creation of defects facilitates the exposure and accessibility of Al 3+ centers, as well as changes the coordination environment within the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 skeleton. Both the number of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are boosted, which is beneficial for glucose activation and 5-HMF generation. Through optimizing the reaction conditions, a glucose conversion of 98.3 % with a 5-HMF yield of 59.3 % was achieved by using defective 6d-MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 in a biphasic tetrahydrofuran/H 2 O NaCl system. Moreover, the 6d-MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 catalyst showed excellent recyclability and reusability, with its catalytic efficiency maintained almost unchanged for consecutive 10 cycles. The catalytic mechanism was elucidated and the acidity of the Lewis and Brønsted acid was modulated by defect engineering to achieve exceptional performance.
