Breathable, Antibacterial, and Highly Sensitive Tribo-Sensors using HOF Embedded Nanofibers for Movements Monitoring and Injury Prevention

Han Zhang,Huidan Wei,Sai Yan,Xuechen Wu,Shengyuan Yang,Peng Li,Hengxue Xiang,Ran Cao,Meifang Zhu

Physical activity is essential for physical health and mental well-being, while improper movements can cause serious injuries. To address this challenge, we developed a sweat-resistant, breathable, and antibacterial triboelectric sensor (BATS) for instantaneously monitoring of physical movements and reducing injury risks. The BATS was created using a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-101-F) embedded within polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers. The resultant BATS system, when coupled with a logic circuit, will issue immediate warnings for improper movements or gestures, aiding in injury prevention. The BATS also present an excellent antibacterial property. The photoactive HOF-101-F generates singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), achieving over 90% antibacterial efficacy against E. coli and inhibiting microbial growth under sweaty conditions during physical activity. Additionally, the incorporation of HOF-101-F enhanced the electrical output of the BATS by 250% compared to pure PVDF. Entirely fiber-based and air-permeable, the BATS can be integrated into sportswear. With its superior comfort, antibacterial efficacy, and exceptional sensitivity, the BATS hold significant promise for personalized health management.

Tuning Pt–N₂H₄ adsorption on NiFe-LDH-Supported Pt for enhanced cycling stability in ammonia electro-oxidation

Yan Zhou,Desheng Sui,Qi Yin,Hui Zhang,Jiabing Luo,Guizheng Qi,Wenhui Zhang,Hailin Ma,Jun Zhang

Ammonia has recently been recognized as a promising energy carrier for long-term and large-scale energy storage. Direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) stand out among ammonia utilization technologies due to their high theoretical energy conversion efficiency and environmental compatibility. Although Pt has been widely regarded as the most effective electrocatalyst for ammonia oxidation in alkaline media compared to other noble metals, designing composite structures of Pt to improve the AOR performance of Pt-based catalysts through carrier modulation is still the best solution for designing fuel cell anode materials at present. This work presents an electrochemical synthesis strategy for in situ reduction of [PtCl 6 ] 2− precursors into Pt nanoparticles anchored on NiFe-layered double hydroxide/nickel foam substrates. The unique structure supplies sufficient OH ad for the gradual dehydrogenation of Pt, the two-dimensional layered structure provides a vast loading space for Pt, and more importantly, the bimetallic nature of LDH modulated the electronic state of Pt and thus further regulated the adsorption state of Pt with N 2 H 4 and was verified by in situ IR spectroscopy, which facilitated the reaction towards the G-M mechanism, reduced the toxicity of the *N atoms, and improved the CV cycling stability of the catalyst. The study of the composite structure of Pt and LDH provided a new approach for the exploration of Pt composite catalysts used in the anode catalysts of DAFC.

Fabrication of luminescent Eu(III)-functionalized hydrogen-bonded organic framework for sensitive detection of Th4+ ions

Guang Wu,Shipeng He,Liwen Wang,Dating Tian

Thorium (Th) has a wide range of applications in industries such as medicine and the nuclear industry, so it is critical to develop effective detection technologies to avoid the hazards they pose to the environment and human health. In this study, we used 4, 4′, 4″-(1, 3, 5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzoic acid (H 3 TATB) as the starting material to form a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TATB-HOF) at room temperature by hydrogen-bonding self-assembly. We then functionalized it with Eu 3+ using a post-synthesis modification approach to produce a red-fluorescent HOF(Eu@TATB-HOF). The luminescence mechanism of Eu@TATB-HOF was caused by the ligand-to-metal charge transfer-assisted energy transfer (LMCT-ET) between TATB-HOF and Eu 3+ . Eu@TATB-HOF was stable in an aqueous solution and enabled highly sensitive detection of Th 4+ . When Th 4+ concentrations ranged from 2.0 to 37.0 mmol/L, the fluorescence intensity of Eu@TATB-HOF showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of Th 4+ ions, with a detection limit of 1.5 mmol/L. Furthermore, several methods were used to demonstrate that the fluorescence quenching of Eu@TATB-HOF by Th 4+ was mostly mediated by the inner filter effect (IFE). Finally, this probe was successfully used to detect Th 4+ ions in real samples.

A Biocompatible Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework (HOF) as Sonosensitizer and Artificial Enzyme for In-Depth Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease

Junlin Ya,Haochen Zhang,Geng Qin,Congcong Huang,Chuanqi Zhao,Jinsong Ren,Xiaogang Qu

Current phototherapeutic approaches for Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibit restricted clinical outcomes due to the limited physical penetration and comprised brain microenvironment of noninvasive nanomedicine. Herein, a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) based sonosensitizer is designed and synthesized. Mn-TCPP, a planar molecule where Mn 2+ ion is chelated in the core with a large p-conjugated system and 4 carboxylate acid groups, has been successfully used as building blocks to construct an ultrasound-sensitive HOF (USI-MHOF), which can go deep in the brain of AD animal models. The both in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that USI-MHOF can generate singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and oxidize β-amyloid (Aβ) to inhibit aggregation, consequently attenuating Aβ neurotoxicity. More intriguingly, USI-MHOF exhibits catalase (CAT)- and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities, mitigating neuron oxidative stress and reprograming the brain microenvironment. For better crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), the peptide KLVFFAED (KD8) has been covalently grafted to USI-MHOF for improving BBB permeability and Aβ selectivity. Further, in vivo experiments demonstrate a significant reduction of the craniocerebral Aβ plaques and improvement of the cognition deficits in triple-transgenic AD (3×Tg-AD) mice models following deep-penetration ultrasound treatment. The work provides the first example of an ultrasound-responsive biocompatible HOF as non-invasive nanomedicine for in-depth treatment of AD.

Rapid synthesis of metal-complex hydrogen-bonded framework HOF-21 with excellent chloride capture capacity for corrosion protection applications

Yue Zhao,Dong-Lei Wang,Xin-Ya Zhou,Da-Peng Wang,Zhi-Yong Sun,Zheng-Hui Qiu,Jin-Wei Zhang,Cun-Guo Lin

This work investigates the novel application of a metal-complex hydrogen-bonded framework HOF-21 as an intelligent, chloride-responsive material for superior corrosion protection. A cost-effective and streamlined synthesis of HOF-21 was developed using rapid stirring at ambient conditions, offering a practical alternative to conventional static interfacial method. When embedded in epoxy coatings on copper substrates, HOF-21 significantly enhances anti-corrosion performance, outperforming traditional materials like ZnAl-LDHs. The protection mechanism is tripartite: effective chloride ion capture, reinforcement of the coating’s mechanical properties, and active protection. Experimental analyses, including kinetic and isotherm model fitting, confirm the exceptional chloride adsorption capacity, best described by pseudo-second-order and Temkin models. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations elucidate the atomic-level mechanism, revealing that a unique hydrogen-bonded cage structure facilitates chloride sequestration. Furthermore, MD simulations demonstrate strong epoxy-HOF-21 compatibility and the formation of an interlocked structure that enhances mechanical cohesion. The active protection is attributed to the ion-exchange of fluorosilicate anions with chlorides. This work establishes M-HOFs as a versatile platform for chloride capture and provides a universal strategy for designing active-intelligent anticorrosion coatings.

Lanqing Yang,Xiaomin Wang,Xu Jing,Baoqing Bai,Tao Bo,Jinhua Zhang,Ligang Yu,Hailong Qian,Ying Gu,Yukun Yang

Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli O157:H7 ) emerges as a foodborne pathogen, emphasizing the imperative for creating precise detection tools. An ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence/fluorescence (ECL/FL) dual-signal mode aptasensor was constructed for the detection of E. coli O157:H7 . Ultrafine silver nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of hydrogen-bonded organic skeleton materials by in-situ photoreduction method, and then combined with aptamers that can identify specific targets to prepare HOF-101@AgNPs@Apt, greatly simplifying the ECL/FL dual-signal mode probe fabrication process and improving sensing reliability. HOF-101@AgNPs@Apt had both strong ECL luminescence and fluorescence, resulting in a high detection sensitivity. The low limit of detection (LOD) for ECL and FL were 0.48 CFU mL −1 and 2.39 CFU mL −1 , respectively. Moreover, the proposed dual-signal mode aptasensor has been successfully applied to determine E. coli O157:H7 levels in tap water and milk with superior accuracy and high antiinterference capability, providing a promising method for food safety monitoring.

Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol/ Lauramidopropyl Betaine/2D-HOF Mixed Film with Abundant Hydrogen Bonds Acts as High Mechanical Strength Artificial Skin

Qin Ye,Shu-Han Chen,Ya Zhang,Bo Ruan,Yi-Jie Zhang,Xin-Ke Zhang,Tao Jiang,Xiaoge Wang,Ning Ma,Fang-Chang Tsai

The mechanical properties of artificial skins are complicated to maintain under ensuring air permeability and antimicrobial. Thus, a series of hydrophilic antimicrobial polymer networks are prepared by crosslinking chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol with the lauramidopropyl betaine and hydrogen bond organic framework (CS/PVA/LPB/2D-HOF). The mechanical performance of the control groups and the complex are systematically evaluated to attain an artificial strength skin. The CS/PVA/LPB/2D-HOF complex exhibits strong mechanical abilities than other control groups. By analyzing the IR spectra and the morphology, the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds between molecules and cracks significantly improves the mechanical properties of the complex. Its maximum tensile strength can reach 29 MPa, and its maximum load capacity can reach 3700 g. Notably, the composite membrane also performs an excellent antimicrobial activity. In vivo and in vitro experiments show that the hybrid membrane can promote tissue regeneration and wound healing (95%). These results may open up the opportunity for future composite material investigations in the artificial skin and tissue engineering field.

Target-Induced DNA Nanodevice as Efficient Signal Amplification Strategy Coupled with a Regenerable SERS Substrate HOF@Au for Ultrasensitive Detection of Roxithromycin

Runzi Zhang,Shunbi Xie,Xiaoyu Yang,Wanyi Xiong,Yi He

Currently, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensors face practical challenges, including SERS substrate waste and unsatisfactory detection results. Accordingly, the highly efficient and regenerable SERS substrate HOF@Au was collaborated with a target-triggered identifying-cleaving-rolling-assembly cycling nanodevice (ICRACN) as a cascade signal amplification system to achieve an ultrasensitive detection of roxithromycin (RXM). In this system, abundant Au nanoparticles (NPs) were reduced in situ on the surface of alkali-resistant HOF-102 to form a uniform and high-enhancement SERS substrate HOF@Au, thereby enhancing the accuracy and stability of the sensor. Furthermore, aptamer-mediated specific recognition, efficient cleavage activity of DNA nanorollers, and a pH-responsive DNA triplex structure were engineered to construct ICRACN. In the presence of the target, it was specifically recognized by the aptamer, leading to the activation of the DNAzyme. Meanwhile, the dynamic nanorollers were triggered to initiate cleavage of a specific site along a defined pathway, enabling highly efficient signal amplification. Concurrently, the triplex structure formed by the two single-stranded DNA atoms on the SERS substrate was opened, allowing the capture of the SERS tag and generating a pronounced SERS signal. The proposed strategy achieved the sensitive detection of RXM with a low limit of detection of 3.97 × 10–14 mol/L. Moreover, modulation of pH induced reversible folding and unfolding of the triplex structure to facilitate regeneration of the SERS substrate, which simplified operational procedures and reduced detection costs. As a result, this work presents a novel, regenerable SERS biosensor and offers valuable insights into the design of multifunctional sensing platforms for analytical applications.

Iron modified hydrogen-bonded organic framework as fluorescent sensor for ascorbic acid detection

Shangqing Zhang,Jie Wen,Haiyan Li,Mingli Chen

Herein, iron modified hydrogen-bonded organic framework (Fe-HOF) was successfully prepared by introducing the yellow-green fluorescent ligand 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid into HOF and then modifying Fe 3+ . A simple turn-on fluorescence strategy is proposed for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) based on Fe-HOF. Fe 3+ could effectively quench fluorescence emission of HOF. In the presence of AA, Fe 3+ was reduced to Fe 2+ , which led to the fluorescence recovery of HOF, thus realizing the fluorescence quantitative detection of AA. These fluorescence responsive behaviors of Fe-HOF ensure fluorescence assay of AA within 0.5 − 8 μM, along with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.14 μM. The sensing platform could realize the rapid detection of ascorbic acid in vitamin C pills, tablets and beverages in the detection of ascorbic acid with good recoveries.

Core-shell structure and twin-cone morphology of Au@Ag@HOF with efficient adsorption capability and high SERS enhancement efficiency for sensitive detection of bisphenol compounds in food

Xiaoyu Yang,Shunbi Xie,Weifen Wu,Jingwen Liu,Manjun Liao,Runzi Zhang,Yao Liu,Mengjun Wang,Yi He

In SERS analysis, SERS substrates often suffer from uneven “hot spot” distribution, poor stability, and susceptibility to oxidation and aggregation, which limit detection precision and accuracy. To overcome these aggregation, this study presents a novel core-shell Au@Ag@hydrogen-bonded organic framework twin cone (Au@Ag@HOF TCs) as efficient SERS substrate. The HOF shell effectively protects Au and Ag from oxidation, thereby enhancing the long-term stability of the SERS substrate. It also prevents signal inhomogeneity caused by noble metal nanoparticle agglomeration and captures target molecules at “hotspots” for maximum Raman enhancement. Leveraging these features, the proposed Au@Ag@HOF TCs enable sensitive detection of bisphenol A, F, and S in food, with detection limits of 1.8033 × 10 −9  M, 4.2170 × 10 −9  M, and 2.0815 × 10 −10  M, respectively. Furthermore, this substrate was successfully applied to analyze real samples, including canned soup, beverages, and milk, demonstrating its potential for the detection of bisphenol compounds in food.
