Design and Fabrication of PEO-HPMC@Ht Composite Solid-state Electrolytes in All-solid-state Lithium Battery

Tao Zhang,Xin Pei,Zheng Zhou,Li-ting Wang,Yu Lu,Gang He

All-solid electrolyte instead of frequently-used inflammable electrolyte can enhance the security and energy density of batteries effectively. However, the low ionic conductivity lead to increased lithium dendrites and increased resistance of the cell at 30 °C. In this work, non-toxic and low-cost hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was introduced simultaneously with non-polluting hectorite (Ht) into polyoxyethylene (PEO) to obtain novel composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs). The optimized CSEs has a high ionic conductivity (1.1×10 −3 S/cm) at 30 °C. This work demonstrates that the novel PEO-HPMC@Ht CSEs are extremely promising.

Solubility improvement of curcumin by crystallization inhibition from polymeric surfactants in amorphous solid dispersions

Ziyue Xi,Yali Fei,Yuxin Wang,Qing Lin,Qidong Ke,Guotai Feng,Lu Xu

To improve the solubility and maintain amorphous state of curcumin (CUR), solid dispersions of CUR with Kollidon CLSF and surfactant (TPGS or HPMC) were prepared by solvent evaporated method. The solid dispersions were characterized by scanning electron microscope, powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . The solubilization mechanism of surfactants in vitro and the pharmaceutical properties of optimal formulations in vivo were studied. The results showed that TPGS as a carrier provided superior solubility and stability for SDs due to its stable hydrogen bonding strength and related crystal nuclei growth mechanism. At different pH conditions (pH 1.2 and 6.8), TPGS significantly improved the solubility and release rate of CUR in solid dispersions. Thus, solid dispersion with high solubility and stability significantly enhanced the oral bioavailability and gastric ulcer healing rate. Therefore, solid dispersion with novel applied surfactants is an effect strategy to improve pharmaceutical properties of CUR.

Photo-Fenton-like catalytic performance of FeOCl/HPMC/PAM composite hydrogel for organic pollutant degradation under natural light

Yuqi Sun,Amatjan Sawut,Rena Simayi,Xixi Huang

Though advanced oxidation technologies show promise for water purification, they face challenges. Photocatalysts struggle with recoverability and environmental adaptability, while the Fenton process is limited by the finite cycling of Fe species, low H 2 O 2 utilization, and strict acidic pH requirements. Based on the above issues, this paper developed a novel FeOCl-loaded hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/polyacrylamide (HPMC/PAM) composite hydrogel (FeOCl/HPMC/PAM) is developed as an efficient photo-Fenton-like catalyst. The FeOCl/HPMC/PAM composite system exhibits complex degradation kinetics (zero-order reaction with 5–50 μL hydrogen peroxide solution, first-order reaction with 100 μL hydrogen peroxide solution) and demonstrates highly efficient degradation performance across a broad pH range (1–7). Under pH= 7, it achieves 93.47 % methylene blue (MB) degradation within 60 min via an adsorption-degradation synergistic mechanism. After six cycles, it retains 75 % activity, showing favorable reusability. The cyclic stability test shows that it still retains 75 % of the degradation efficiency after 6 consecutive cycles, confirming its reliable reusability. Meanwhile, the iron leaching rate of the composite material during the reaction is only 0.061 mg/L, confirming its structural stability and environmental safety. With low cost, easy recovery, and wide pH adaptability, this composite hydrogel exhibits potential as a commercially viable system for organic pollutant removal from real water matrices.

Salt-induced cellulose nanocrystal networks modulate the stability and digestion behavior of AMP/HPMC water-in-water Pickering emulsions

Chunling Nie,Zejie Chen,Yijun Liu,Zhonghui Shen,Yujia Dang,Yingtian Qu,Pengrui Wu,Hong Zeng,Yanbo Wang,Jianguo Wang

Salt ions induced CNCs aggregation by electric double layer compression. • Aggregated CNCs formed interfacial bridging structures between emulsion droplets. • Salt-induced CNCs networks enhanced interfacial reinforcement and emulsion viscosity. • AMP/HPMC Pickering emulsions exhibited remarkable long-term stability at 60 days. • Salt-induced CNCs aggregation hindered the contact between AMP and digestive enzymes. Salt ions play a key role in governing the property of food system. In this work, the effects of salt ions on physicochemical property of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and their stabilization behavior in Amylopectin/Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (AMP/HPMC) water-in-water (W/W) emulsions were investigated. The addition of NaCl significantly reduced the absolute value of zeta potential of CNCs and resulted in particle aggregation, forming of network structures. These structure changes promoted the droplet clustering and bridging flocculation of AMP/HPMC W/W Pickering emulsions and enhanced their stability during long-term storage (60 days). Rheological analysis revealed that increasing NaCl concentration resulted in enhanced viscosity and obvious viscous-dominated behavior due to the synergistic interaction between salt-induced CNCs network and thermal-induced aggregation of HPMC. Furthermore, in vitro digestion results showed that salt-induced structural changes of CNCs effectively limited enzyme accessibility, thereby reducing AMP digestion and glucose release. This work demonstrates that salt ions could regulate the structure-function relationship of CNCs-stabilized W/W Pickering emulsions, and provides new insights to design novel food systems with controlled digestion properties. PUL/HPMC water-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibers: construction, stabilization mechanism, and stability

Chunling Nie,Yefan Niu,Weina Guo,Pengrui Wu,Yijun Liu,Zhonghui Shen,Zhihong Song,Xindi Wei,Yanbo Wang,Hong Zeng,Jianguo Wang

Water-in-water (W/W) Pickering emulsions have aligned with the increasing consumer demands for health foods due to their entirely aqueous formulation with oil-free. In this work, Pullulan (PUL) and Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were used to construct polysaccharide-based W/W Pickering emulsion system. PUL and HPMC concentrations played crucial roles in droplet sizes and phase behavior of PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were used as stabilizers to prepare PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions and the stabilization mechanisms were investigated. PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions stabilized by CNCs with a rigid rod-like structure and strong interfacial adsorption capacity exhibited smaller and more uniform droplet morphology and higher storage stability, whereas the flexible fibrillar CNFs tended to form entangled networks in the continuous phase and bridge droplets, resulting in droplet deformation and coalescence. Furthermore, environmental stability of PUL/HPMC Pickering emulsions revealed that increasing CNCs concentration could significantly enhance their centrifugal and thermal stability. This work would provide a novel insight into the stabilization behavior of nanocellulose with different morphologies in W/W Pickering emulsions and broaden potential applications of W/W Pickering emulsions in functional food fields.

Development of a bioactive chitosan HPMC-based membrane with tea polyphenols encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin as an effective enhancement

Jinxing Song,Huafeng Feng,Mengqi Wu,Linxiao Chen,Wei Xia,Wenqing Zhang

Biodegradable membranes of chitosan and its composite with other natural polymers provide a promising solution for biomaterials. To further improve the antibacterial activities of chitosan (CS)/hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) membrane, natural extracts tea polyphenols (TP) were employed in this work. And TP was encapsulated by β -cyclodextrin (CD) beforehand to improve its compatibility with HPMC. To our knowledge, it’s the first time ever reported to use CD encapsulated TP in CS/HPMC membranes. And variety characterization results such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet spectra (UV) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed that TP had successfully encapsulated with CD. After the solvent blending of CS/HPMC and CDTP, CS/HPMC/CDTP membrane was prepared by a casting method and exhibited good toughness and tensile strength. Finally, bacterial inhibitive rate and inhibition zones of the membrane with E. coli and S. aureus proved the enhanced antibacterial as expected. And the morphology of the bacteria was observed to estimate the possible interaction approach of materials and bacteria. The novel biodegradable membrane can be used for antibacterial coating application.

Al Kiey Sherief A.,Baseer Rasha A.,Kamel Samir

The simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is crucial for biomedical and clinical diagnostics. Herein, we present a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on a modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) functionalized with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and 3D reduced graphene oxide/pentaerythritol (3D rGO/PE). The structural and morphological properties of the composite were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical analysis demonstrated the remarkable electrocatalytic activity of 3D rGO/PE/PVP@HPMC/GCE for the oxidation of AA, DA, and UA, with peak potential separations of 214, 133, and 346 mV for DA-AA, DA-UA, and UA-AA, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited wide linear detection ranges of 4.0 µM to 1.0 mM (AA), 0.2–100 µM (DA), and 1.0–100 µM (UA), with detection limits of 0.82, 0.002, and 0.025 M, respectively. The sensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, making it a promising platform for real-sample analysis.

Pengrui Wu,Yefan Niu,Zejie Chen,Chunling Nie,Yijun Liu,Zhonghui Shen,Zhihong Song,Xindi Wei,YanBo Wang,Hong Zeng,JianGuo Wang

In this study, pullulan-in-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (PUL/HPMC) water-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared for the encapsulation and cultivation of L. plantarum . Results demonstrated that CNCs were mainly adsorbed at the PUL-HPMC interface, thereby effectively inhibiting the aggregation and coalescence of emulsion droplets. L. plantarum was encapsulated in emulsions and primarily distributed in the PUL phase. It was found that the optimal encapsulation concentration of L. plantarum was 9.67 log CFU/g, and the optimal addition of MRS broth was 1.0 wt%. Finally, the viable counts of L. plantarum increased from 4.44 to 7.42 log CFU/g during 30 h of cultivation. Furthermore, an initial pH 5.5 afforded the optimal cultivation performance for L. plantarum , with viable counts increasing from 4.00 to 7.06 log CFU/g during 24 h of cultivation. This study provides a novel microculture platform for efficient L. plantarum cultivation and fully aqueous emulsion systems with food-grade application potential for probiotics-based functional foods. K+-directed co-assembly of alginate and gellan gum enables coating-free enteric HPMC hard capsules with programmed drug releases

Chuqi He,Bingde Zheng,Zhenyu Liu,Zhongyi Shi,Xiaoyun Chen,Mi Zhang,Xingyong Liu,Chaoxing Chen,Panpan Zheng,Xueqin Zhang,Jing Ye,Meitian Xiao

Enteric hard capsules are conventionally manufactured by applying coatings to pre-formed shells, a process requiring stringent control. Here, we report a strategy to directly integrate enteric functionality into hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based hard capsules using an ion-regulated supramolecular gel composed of sodium alginate (SA) and gellan gum (GG). Potassium ions (K + ) direct the co-assembly of SA and GG by screening charges, coordinating with carboxylate groups, and reorganizing the hydrogen-bonding network. A multiscale approach, combining microscopy, spectroscopy, and simulations, reveals that SA and GG chains co-assemble primarily through hydrogen bonding into aligned aggregates. K + consolidates the network, reducing intermolecular distances and promoting fibrillar coarsening with fiber alignment. This yields a compact structure with enhanced mechanical strength and pH responsiveness. An optimized formulation (SA:GG = 0.7:0.4 wt% with 0.35 wt% K + ) exhibits stable viscoelasticity and suitable gelation kinetics, enabling reproducible capsule fabrication. Dissolution tests confirm gastric resistance at pH 1.2 for 2 h and rapid disintegration at intestinal pH 6.8, with >80% drug release within 45 min. Moisture-sorption modeling demonstrates that gastric resistance is retained after storage, with early-stage absorption being diffusion-dominated (apparent diffusion coefficient ca. 10 −5  mm 2 ·h −1 ). By linking ion-regulated molecular assembly to targeted enteric performance, this polysaccharide-based strategy offers a scalable, green platform for next-generation hard capsules, eliminating solvent-intensive coating and advancing sustainable manufacturing. Impact of Surfactants on Polymer Maintained Nifedipine Supersaturation in Aqueous Solution

Wang Shan,Liu Chengyu,Chen Huijun,Zhu Alan (Donghua),Qian Feng

Purpose To study the impact of different surfactants on the supersaturation of nifedipine stabilized with HPMC and PVP-VA. Methods Different kinds of surfactants, including one cationic surfactant, two anionic surfactants, and three nonionic surfactants, were used to evaluate their impacts on the supersaturation of nifedipine stabilized with HPMC and PVP-VA. Polymer-surfactant interaction was studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and fluorescent method. Solubility of nifedipine in solutions containing different amounts of polymers and surfactants was measured. Drug-polymer affinity was evaluated by measuring the percentage of polymer coprecipitated together with the drug from supersaturated solutions. Results Different polymer-surfactant combinations had different impacts on the supersaturation of nifedipine. Some combinations, such as PVP-VA/SLS and PVP-VA/NaTC under higher surfactant concentrations, showed improved drug supersaturation, due to increased drug solubility or polymer-surfactant synergy; while other combinations, such as HPMC/SLS and HPMC/Tween 20 under lower surfactant concentrations, showed reduced drug supersaturation, which could result from competitive surfactant-polymer or drug-surfactant interaction that disrupted pre-existent drug-polymer interaction. Conclusions The ultimate impacts of various surfactants on polymer stabilized nifedipine supersaturation could be attributed to the interplay between different factors, including solubility enhancement of the drug, drug-polymer-surfactant interactions, and polymer-surfactant synergy.

High toughness, high stability and low hysteresis PVA /HPMC/PA/SBMA/ZnCl2 conductive hydrogels for wearable flexible electronics for multifunctional sensors and supercapacitors

Fan Wang,HuaQing Zhang,ChunLing Liu,Wen Bao,YaJuan Hu,Xieraili Maimaitiyiming

PVA-based conductive hydrogels have enormous potential for applications in wearable flexible electronic devices, but their low ionic conductivity and mechanical strength hinder their practical utility. To address this challenge, we propose a PVA-based incorporating metal salt and zwitterion. We use PA(phytic acid) and HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) - compatible properties to prepare PSBMA 1 -PMAZ 1.5 interpenetrating conductive hydrogel with good electrical signal responsiveness, repeatability, compression resistance, and low hysteresis (≤11.68 %). The hydrogel-based flexible strain sensor has a wide detection range, high sensitivity (GF = 1.1 at 0 − 600 %), stable electrical signal response to variations in temperature and humidity, and human movement detection capabilities. The detection range of hydrogel - based supercapacitors is 25 °C - 40 °C, which indicates that the device assembled with activated carbon as the electrode has good capacitance characteristics, and the multifunctional characteristics of PSBMA 1 -PMAZ 1.5 hydrogels are poised to serve as a demonstration for a new generation of flexible electronic products.
