Amorphous pectin/calcium magnesium carbonate @ konjac glucomannan for recovery phosphate from aqueous

Xingyu Wu,Zhe Gao,Chengfang Zhao,Yan Liu,Chengyi Huang,Lilin Wang,Jinsong He,Fei Shen,Yanzong Zhang

To safeguard water quality and sustainable phosphorus cycling, it is imperative to recover phosphorus from high-content wastewater, particularly livestock wastewater, considering the low tolerance threshold for phosphate in surface water (below 0.5 mg/L). Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate possess considerable potential for phosphate adsorption; however, their crystalline nature diminishes the reactivity of calcium and magnesium, resulting in the limited phosphate adsorption capacity. In this study, a novel phosphate adsorbent (PCCM@K) was synthesized through co-precipitation involving Ca, Mg, and pectin, followed by direct coating with konjac glucomannan, which eliminated the need for separation and cleaning steps. Pectin macromolecules interact with Ca and Mg to yield amorphous minerals, thereby enhancing the pore structure. The assessment of the phosphate adsorption performance of PCCM@K reveals robust alkali release, stable adsorption across a broad pH range (3−12), high adsorption capacity (61.9 mg-P/g), minimal interference from coexisting ions, and effective phosphate recovery in the actual biogas slurry. The primary mechanism underlying phosphate adsorption is chemisorption. During the adsorption process, ligand exchange takes place between carbonate and phosphate, leading to an increase in solution pH and the immobilization of phosphate via inner-sphere complexation with Ca and Mg. Overall, PCCM@K exhibits considerable potential for phosphorus recovery from wastewater, highlighting its significance in promoting environmentally sustainable practices.

Preparation and characterization of konjac glucomannan-based edible film containing osmanthus aroma

Wang Xiang,Zhang Di,Li Charlie,Zhang Junwei,Tong Cailing,Sun Yilan,Pang Jie

Pure konjac glucomannan (KGM) film has certain limitations in mechanical properties, antioxidant activity, and preservation ability. To solve these limitations, osmanthus powder (OP) was innovatively added to KGM film-forming solution to prepare KGM-based film by casting method. The effect of varying amounts of OP on the rheological properties of film-forming solution, the structure, physicochemical, functional properties of KGM edible film were evaluated. The results showed that the addition of different amounts of OP variously affects the performance of the KGM film. The addition of OP enhanced the mechanical properties, antioxidant, antibacterial, UV blocking, and degradation ability of the film. Furthermore, when the addition amount of OP was 0.25%, the KGM edible film containing osmanthus aroma exhibited optimal overall performance. The film showed good mechanical properties, antioxidant, UV blocking, and had preservation effects for fresh-cut apples. Additionally, the addition of OP improved the sensory evaluation of edible films, imparting them with a unique osmanthus aroma, thus providing a new method to improve edible film packaging.

Physical stability and rheological properties of konjac glucomannan-ethyl cellulose mixed emulsions

Xuewen Ni,Wenjie Chen,Man Xiao,Kao Wu,Ying Kuang,Harold Corke,Fatang Jiang

Konjac glucomannan (KGM)/ethyl cellulose (EC) could form a stable homogeneous emulsion with appropriate mixing formula. This study aimed to investigate the stable mechanism of KGM/EC emulsion at different mixing ratio through its rheological properties, and droplet size and morphology changes with up to 6   days storage time. Though emulsions samples with high KGM content had larger droplet size and worse uniformity at the fresh stage, they appeared to be more stable and droplets growth rate were slow during storage. Aggregation and morphology of droplets could be observed under confocal microscopy. Shear-thinning behavior were found in mixed emulsions, and mainly accredited to the KGM component. The effect of temperature on viscosities of the emulsions was well-described by Arrhenius equation. Increased KGM content led to larger storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″), and the difference in cross-over point of G′ and G″ implied changes in microstructures of the emulsions.

Synthesis and characteristics of konjac glucomannan films incorporated with functionalized microcrystalline cellulose

Lin Wang,Lizhuan Lin,Xiaohan Chen,Cailing Tong,Jie Pang

To development of konjac glucomannan (KGM) based films for use in food packaging is increasing because of environmental attraction, biodegradability and availability. The objective of this research was to prepare a facile approach for KGM based films. Polydopamine (PDA) functionalized microcrystalline cellulose (PFMC) were incorporated into a KGM matrix. The KGM/PFMC films were prepared by the solvent casting method. The surface morphology of the KGM/PFMC films were generated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The crystal structure and thermal ability of the film were generated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Rheological behavior, elemental and characteristic peak changes were developed by rheology, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Incorporation of PFMC increased the mechanical properties owing to the high ratio (0.2 g) of PFMC and strong interactions with the KGM. Water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films were significantly decreased. Moreover, PFMC also gave KGM/PFMC films high thermal stability. The results suggest that that KGM/PFMC film is a promising food packaging material.

Konjac glucomannan/polyacrylamide bicomponent hydrogels: Self-healing originating from semi-interpenetrating network

Zhiyong Li,Yunlan Su,Muhammad Abdul Haq,Baoquan Xie,Dujin Wang

A novel self-healing semi-interpenetrating network hydrogel based on a natural polymer (konjac glucomannan , KGM) and synthetic polymer (polyacrylamide, PAAm) is prepared by a simple one-pot synthesis method. The hydrogels show excellent self-healing ability at ambient temperature without the need for any stimulus or healing agent and high recovery degrees (up to 73% tensile strength) can be achieved at a prolonged healing time. The healed gels exhibit high tensile strength (up to 66 kPa) and high elongation (up to 1200%). And the effect of the NH 3 ·H 2 O content, the ratio of KGM to acrylamide (AAm) and the cross-linker content on the self-healing efficiency have been investigated. The combination of structural transition of PAAm and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding is essential for self-healing property of the hydrogels.

The stability and in vitro digestion of curcumin emulsions containing Konjac glucomannan

Shenghua He,Cheng Gu,Deguo Wang,Weili Xu,Rongchun Wang,Ying Ma

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) was used to characterize the structure of the curcumin emulsions stabilized with whey protein isolate (WPI). With an increasing concentration of KGM from 0.1% to 0.3%, the fat droplet size decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing KGM content. The retention of curcumin in emulsions with KGM was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the emulsions without KGM, after heating at 85 °C for 90 min. These two emulsions showed good stability in the pH range of 2–8 in addition to pH 5. Both emulsions with/without KGM were stable at 0–80 mM salt concentration, however the curcumin emulsion with KGM was unstable at 100 mM NaCl concentration. The droplet size analysis and microscopic observations indicated that the aggregation of fat droplets in these two emulsions occurred under simulated gastric fluid (SGF) conditions with a digestion time of 10 min. There were more undigested fat droplets in the curcumin emulsion with KGM than the emulsion without KGM under simulated intestinal fluid conditions after 120 min of digestion. The addition of KGM in WPI-stabilized curcumin emulsions slowed down the release rate of free fatty acids and curcumin from the emulsion droplets. These findings indicated that KGM could be used to achieve a controlled and sustainable release of bioactive compounds from emulsions.

Characterization of carboxymethylated konjac glucomannan for potential application in colon-targeted delivery

Lu-Hui Wang,Guo-Qing Huang,Tong-Cheng Xu,Jun-Xia Xiao

Carboxymethylation is a potential way to extend the application of konjac glucomannan (KGM) in the construction of colon-targeted delivery systems through electrostatic interaction-based techniques. Hence, some related properties of carboxymethylated KGM (CMKGM) were characterized as a function of its degree of substitution (DS). Carboxymethylation decreased the molecular weight and viscoelasticity, increased the thermal stability and water solubility of KGM in a DS-dependent manner, but did not destroy the sensitivity of solution viscosity to temperature variation. The gelation ability of the CMKGMs was greatly weakened and the hardness of their gels was greatly impaired. The CMKGMs carried negative charges with zeta potentials proportional to their DSs, but still maintained similar resistance to proteolytic enzymes and susceptibility to β-mannanase with the native KGM. Hence, the CMKGMs are potential in the construction of colon-targeted and enzyme-triggered delivery systems through layer-by-layer assembly, complex coacervation, and other similar techniques.

Preparation and characterization of oxidized konjac glucomannan/carboxymethyl chitosan/graphene oxide hydrogel

Lihong Fan,Jiayan Yi,Jun Tong,Xiaoyu Zhou,Hongyu Ge,Shengqiong Zou,Huigao Wen,Min Nie

Polysaccharide hydrogels have been widely used as biomaterials in biomedical field. In this article, composite hydrogels were prepared through the Schiff-base reaction between the aldehyde of oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKGM) and the amino of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Meanwhile, different amount of graphene oxide (GO) was added as nano-additive. The hydrogels have been characterized by various methods including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Surface morphology (SEM). Through the observation of SEM, the hydrogels’ scaffolds present a homogeneous interconnected pore structure after lyophilizing. In addition, the influence of different GO content on properties including gelation time, swelling ability, water evaporation rate and mechanical properties was investigated. The results indicate that the hydrogels have short gelation time, appropriate swelling ability and water evaporation rate. Especially, the compressive strength and modulus increase 144% and 296% respectively as the GO content increase from 0 to 5   mg/ml. Moreover, MTT assay was applied to evaluate the biocompatibility of hydrogels. The result indicate that hydrogels with GO show better biocompatibility. Therefore, due to the appropriate water absorption capacity, the similar compressive modulus with soft tissue and excellent biocompatibility, the composite hydrogels have potential application in wound dressings.

Removal of copper(II) using deacetylated konjac glucomannan conjugated soy protein isolate

Feng Liu,Hailiang Zou,Jianbing Peng,Jinwen Hu,Hongbo Liu,Yanwu Chen,Fenghui Lu

In this study, an environmentally friendly biosorbent deacetylated konjac glucomannan conjugated soy protein isolate (abbreviated as DKGM-C-SPI) was prepared for Cu 2+ ions removal from aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and zeta potential analysis revealed successful conjugation of soy protein isolate (SPI) onto deacetylated konjac glucomannan (DKGM) matrix. A comparative adsorption performance of DKGM-C-SPI and DKGM was tested to remove Cu 2+ ions from aqueous solution. DKGM-C-SPI showed the desired adsorption performance for Cu 2+ ions. The adsorption equilibrium of DKGM-C-SPI was achieved within 30   min. The adsorption behavior of DKGM-C-SPI followed a pseudo-second-order reaction model. The maximum Cu 2+ ion adsorption capacities obtained from the Langmuir isotherms fit were shown to be 62.50   mg   g ⿿1 for DKGM-C-SPI and 12.23   mg   g ⿿1 for DKGM. This impressive increase about 5 times in Cu 2+ ion adsorption capacity is attributed to the strong Cu 2+ ion chelating ability of the soy protein isolate (SPI) on the DKGM matrix. These results confirm that the DKGM-C-SPI biosorbent has a potential for Cu 2+ ion extraction from wastewater.

Pattern of Specific Oxidation of Konjac Glucomannan with TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO system

Fangxia Wu,Na Yan,Yan Guo,Xiaoxiao Yu,Lin Yi,Yilan Ouyang,Xin Wang,Zhenqing Zhang

The TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO system was used to modify konjac glucomannan and prepare β-1,4-linked D-mannuronic/glucuronic acid oligosaccharides . The impact of oxidant amount on the degree of oxidation , molecular weight , terminal structure and the ratio of sugar units were systematically investigated. Mannoses were transformed to mannuronic acids quantitatively, while some glucose were transformed to glucuronic acids, some degraded. The unspecific oxidation causes strong degradation of konjac glucomannan sugar chains. Multiple terminal structures were observed in the oxidized KGM products. According to those observations, the oxidation pattern of konjac glucomannan with the TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO system was speculated. It is suggested that the axial hydroxyl group at position 2 in mannose might form a hydrogen bond with the oxygen on the sugar ring. It would against the unspecific oxidation. While, both specific and unspecific oxidations were observed at glucose units with an equatorial hydroxyl group at position 2, and the degradation occurs mostly on glucose during the oxidation.

Jinqiang Sun,Mengge Shang,Minna Zhang,Shimo Yu,Zhipeng Yuan,Xibin Yi,Serguei Filatov,Jing Zhang

Biomass aerogels are attractive in various applications owing to their inherent advantages of renewability, biodegradability and eco-friendly. Herein, a novel composite aerogel of konjac glucomannan (KGM)/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF)@HKUST-1 (KTA@HKUST-1) is prepared through a facile vacuum impregnation method combined with the directional freeze-drying process, which using KGM and TOCNF as raw materials. The structural analyses disclose that the KTA@HKUST-1 has a hierarchical porosity, in which HKUST-1 can provide micropores for adsorption, while the meso -/macropores from KTA act as high-speed channels to improve diffusion and mass transfer rate to transport CO 2 components into the micropores of HKUST-1. The experiment results of KTA@HKUST-1-10 (KTA@H10) show that the CO 2 adsorption capacity can reach 3.50 mmol·g −1 at 1 bar and 298 K, and the adsorption capacity retention rate as high as 91.43% after 7 cycles. In addition, the CO 2 /N 2 adsorption selectivity of KTA@H10 can reach 18.42, which has an excellent potential for selective CO 2 adsorption.

Konjac glucomannan/carboxymethyl chitosan film embedding gliadin/casein nanoparticles for grape preservation

Nitong Bu,Ning Zhou,Guoyu Cao,Ruojun Mu,Jie Pang,Chen Ma,Lin Wang

Constructing biopolymer-based packaging films with fantastic water resistance and mechanical properties for food preservation is highly desirable and challenging. In this work, Gliadin/Casein nanoparticles (GCNPs) were prepared by pH-driven method and embedded into konjac glucomannan/carboxymethyl chitosan (KC) film matrix to improve the water resistance and mechanical properties of KC film. Gliadin and Casein showed good compatibility and co-assembled to form compact GCNPs clusters through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction verified by FT-IR spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The particle size and zeta potential of GCNPs was 269.7 nm and −7.6 mV, respectively. The effect of GCNPs on the mechanics, water barrier, thermal stability , and UV-shielding of KC-GCNPs film was investigated. SEM images revealed that GCNPs uniformly distributed into KC film matrix and significantly improved the mechanics (tensile strength: 75.6 MPa, elongation at breaking: 36.7 %), water barrier ability (water contact angle: 91.3°, water vapor permeability: 0.994 g mm/m 2  day kPa, water solubility: 52.0 %), thermal stability and UV blocking property of KC-GCNPs film. Furthermore, KC-GCNPs film could also be applied to extend the shelf life of grapes. This paper demonstrated the great potential of GCNPs as functional nanofillers in enhancing the physicochemical properties of KC film.
