LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) spinel has drawn increasing attention due to its high voltage, stabilized electrochemical performance and safety features as a cathode for lithium-ion batteries. However, the main challenge lies in its unstable surface structure, especially at elevated temperatures. In this paper, we decorate the LNMO precursor with a solid electrolyte of Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 (LATP) via a facile sol–gel method, followed by a co-crystallization process at 820 °C, to successfully generate a LATP modification shell at the surface of LNMO. The LATP modification shell could not only optimize the morphology of LNMO including the limitation of particle growth and control of crystalline orientation, but also realize ion doping during the co-crystallization process. By tuning the LATP contents, the 2 wt% LATP modification is found to be the most effective at balancing the interfacial stability and Li+ diffusion kinetics of LNMO, as well as enhancing its rate capability and capacity retention at high temperatures. As a result, the 2 wt% LATP-modified LNMO cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 84.8 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles with a capacity retention of 68.9%, and a superior rate capability (102.0 mA h g−1 at 20 C) at room temperature. Moreover, this electrode also delivers a good capacity retention of 85.7% after 100 cycles at 55 °C, which is ascribed to the stabilized interface with a LATP protective layer.

Sodium super-ionic conductors (NASICON)-type electrolyte Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), with high ionic conductivity and low cost, is considered as one of the most attractive alternatives to liquid electrolytes . However, the poor interfacial compatibilities of LATP electrolyte in lithium batteries lead to the failure, which hinders its further development. Herein, a MoS 2 coating layer as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) is used for modifying the surface of LATP (MCLATP) via an economical and uncomplicated spin coating method, which not only effectively inhibits the decomposition of LATP, but also in-situ forms a conversion layer consisting of Li 2 S and Mo metal during cycling. The conversion layer can improve the interfacial charge transfer kinetics and decrease the charge transfer resistance . According to interfacial modification of MoS 2 , the symmetric cells show slight polarization, and the Li/MCLATP/LFP cells demonstrate excellent cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1 C. The enhanced batteries performance is ascribed to interfacial modification of MoS 2 as an ASEI layer, which reduces interfacial concentration polarization caused by the formed microcracks around the surface during decomposition of LATP. This work provides a promising strategy to construct the interface between Li metal and solid-state electrolytes for other unstable electrolytes beyond NASICON .

The separator is crucial to the performance and safety of the battery. This study prepared a polypropylene (PP) /solid electrolyte Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) /SiO 2 composite separator (PP/LATP/SiO 2 ). The experimental results demonstrate significant enhancements in the electrolyte wettability and thermal stability of the separator. Furthermore, the lithium-ion transference number ( t + ) has been raised from 0.22 to 0.56. In electrochemical performance tests, the lithium symmetric battery assembled with the PP/LATP/SiO 2 composite separator exhibits an exceptionally long cycle life, sustaining stable cycling for 900 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 . This composite separator, combining the solid electrolyte and SiO 2 layer, effectively facilitates lithium-ion transport and reduces the occurrence of electrode side reactions, thereby enhancing the performance and safety of the battery.

Traditional technologies of lithium extraction from salt lakes suffer the low efficiency of Li + /Mg 2+ separation and high energy consumption. We introduce a novel electrodialysis process that leverages Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP, one of lithium superionic conductors) and incorporates an aided charge balance (ACB) system, all under low voltage and ultra-low current conditions. The remarkable ion selectivity of LATP, coupled with the enhanced recovery ratio facilitated by ACB, collectively empower this technology to achieve extremely high separation efficiency and remarkably low energy consumption. In a simulated pristine brine, the average Li/Mg separation coefficient reached 5924, accompanied by an exceptionally low energy consumption of only 0.80 kWh·kg −1 Li . Furthermore, this technique enabled the production of battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 with an outstanding purity of 99.93 %, achieved through a streamlined process comprising only two stages.

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) composed of sulfide-based solid-state electrolyte and LiNixMnyCo1–x–yO2 (NMC) cathode are expected to become the promising next generation of energy storage systems due to their great potential in highly improved safety and energy density. However, the poor interfacial stability between the NMC cathode and sulfide-based electrolyte remains an important challenge for the commercialization of ASSLBs. In this study, a thin layer of fast lithium-ion conductor Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) with a thickness of 8 nm was coated at the interface between LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) and Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5 via a facile wet chemical method to improve interfacial stability. It has been found that the nanoscale LATP coating layer can not only accelerate lithium ions across the NCM811/Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5 interface but also effectively alleviate the interfacial problems. The initial discharge capacity of the as-prepared LATP@NCM811/Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5/Li batteries at 0.1 C is 151.5 mAh/g, and the capacity retention rate is 81.6% after 100 cycles at room temperature. The results indicate that interfacial modification with the nanosized LATP coating is an effective strategy for providing more possibilities for commercial application of ASSLBs.

Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is a promising solid-state electrolyte for next-generation solid-state lithium metal batteries, offering high ionic conductivity, superior air stability, and low cost. However, its practical application is hindered by high interface impedance due to rigid solid–solid contact with electrodes and instability when in contact with lithium metal. Here, a hybrid solid–liquid electrolyte is designed, consisting of a porous 3D LATP skeleton infiltrated with carbonate-based organic electrolyte, to ensure sufficient electrolyte wettability. Further, the thermodynamic instability between LATP and Li is solved by magnetron sputtering a layer of ferroelectric Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 TiO 3 (BST) onto the LATP surface. This BST interlayer prevents direct contact between LATP and Li metal, enhancing performance by dynamically regulating Li + deposition, inhibiting dendrite growth, reducing overpotential and interface resistance, and improving Li + transport. Compared to the LATP-based electrolyte (LATP-LE), the BST-modified hybrid electrolyte (B@LATP-LE) demonstrates largely improved ionic conductivity (0.42 to 1.38 mS cm −1 ) and outstanding electrochemical performance, achieving stable cycling for over 7000 h in Li||Li cells and superior stability in LiFePO 4 ||Li and LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ||Li full cells. This approach offers a cost-effective solution to the interface issues of LATP and provides insights for high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is one of the most attractive solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for application in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) due to its advantages of high ionic conductivity, air stability and low cost. However, the poor interfacial contact and slow Li-ion migration have greatly limited its practical application. Herein, a composite ion-conducting layer is designed at the Li/LATP interface, which a MoS 2 film is constructed on LATP via chemical vapor deposition, followed by the introduction of a solid polymer (SP) liquid precursor to form a MoS 2 @SP protective layer. This protective layer not only achieves a lower Li-ion migration energy barrier, but also adsorbs more Li-ion, which is able to promote interfacial ion transport and improve interfacial contacts. Thanks to the improved migration and adsorption of Li-ion, the Li symmetric cell containing LATP-MoS 2 @SP exhibits a stable cycle of more than 1200 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . More remarkably, the capacity retention of the full cell assembled with LiFePO 4 cathode is as high as 86.2% after 400 cycles at 1 C. This work provides a design strategy for significantly improving unstable interfaces of SSEs and realizing high-performance ASSLBs.

A simple and effective method was developed and used to improve the conductivity and density of Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 solid–state electrolyte. The raw powders were synthesized through two different methods to expand the particle size distribution, which could improve the sintered density and the grain boundary connection of the of LATP electrolyte. Through this method, the relative density of the electrolyte made of mixed powders can reach to 97% compared with the 92% and 95% for electrolyte made of single solid-state reaction powder and sol-gel reaction powder, respectively. The conductivity test shows that this electrolyte has high total ion conductivity of 5.23 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature with the grain boundary conductivity of 6.11 × 10 −4 S cm −1 . With the merits of high density and ion conductivity, this solid-state electrolyte shows good rate capability and cycle performance in aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries.

The capacity of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) at high rates is limited due to the polarization caused by its modest Li-ion (Li+) diffusion coefficient and low electrical conductivity. Coating with ionic conductors is an available method to ameliorate charge transport. Li1+xAlxTi2–x(PO4)3 ion conductors with thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stabilities have been proven to be modification materials for electrodes. Herein, the Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 (LATP) precursor dispersion with optimized preparation is applied to the surface modification of LTO by a dynamic mix-drying method. A proper amount of LATP ultrafine particle coating could develop the ion transport rate in the electrode and restrain side reactions. The 2 wt % LATP–LTO anode exhibits an optimized capacity of 168.2 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1 and retains 96.7% of its capacity after 5000 cycles at 5.0 A g–1, while the P-LTO anode retains 86.3% of the capacity. Improved Li+ transport and interface stability in the electrodes lead to the boosted rate and cycling stability. The LATP-modified LTO composites provide a possibility for the further application of related materials in the energy storage field.

Developing functional separators capable of simultaneously suppressing lithium dendrite growth and enabling compatibility with high-voltage cathodes is critical for realizing long-cycle-life lithium metal batteries. Herein, a synergistic bulk–interface regulation strategy is achieved via a coatable Y3+/Zn2+ codoped LATP/PVDF-HFP composite coating applied onto a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator. Y3+/Zn2+ codoped Li1.3Al0.275Y0.025Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LAYTP-Zn) is synthesized via a solid-state route and uniformly integrated with PVDF-HFP to form a conformal coating with strong interfacial adhesion. Y3+/Zn2+ incorporation induces lattice expansion of LATP, thereby broadening bulk Li+ transport pathways. In addition, Zn2+ regulates interfacial chemistry by enhancing electrolyte dissociation and anchoring anions through Lewis acid interactions, while also promoting the formation of polar β-phase PVDF-HFP, collectively increasing the Li+ transference number to 0.79. In addition, the polymer matrix serves as a physical barrier that mitigates direct interfacial side reactions. The coordinated regulation of bulk ion conduction and interfacial ion distribution enables a more uniform Li+ flux and facilitates the formation of a LiF-enriched and mechanically robust interphase, thereby suppressing dendrite nucleation and growth. As a result, Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling for over 3000 h at 1 mA·cm–2 and 1 mAh·cm–2. Furthermore, Li||LFP and Li||NCM811 half-cells deliver capacity retentions of 91.2% after 800 cycles at 1 C and 95.1% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, respectively, while maintaining stable operation up to 4.73 V. This work provides a scalable separator design that integrates bulk transport optimization with interfacial regulation, offering a practical pathway toward high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Composite cathodes integrating Ni-rich layered oxides and oxide solid electrolytes are essential for high-energy all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs), yet interfacial degradation during high-temperature co-sintering (>600 °C) remains a critical challenge. While surface passivation strategies mitigate reactions below 400 °C, their effectiveness diminishes at elevated temperatures due to inability to counteract Li + concentration gradients. Here, we introduce in situ lithium compensators, i.e., LiOH/Li 2 CO 3 , into NCM-LATP composite cathodes to dynamically replenish Li + during co-sintering. These additives melt to form transient Li + -rich phases that back-diffuse Li + into NCM lattices, suppressing layered-to-rock salt transitions and stabilizing the interface. Quasi in situ XRD confirms retention of the layered structure at temperature up to 700 °C, while electrochemical tests demonstrate a reversible capacity of 222.2 mA h g −1 —comparable to NCM before co-sintering—and an impressive 65.3% capacity retention improvement over 100 cycles. In contrast, uncompensated cathodes exhibit severe degradation to 96.5 mA h g −1 due to Li depletion and resistive Li-Ti-O interphases. This strategy integrates sacrificial chemistry with scalable powder-mixing workflows, achieving a 93.4% reduction in interfacial impedance. By addressing Li + flux homogenization and structural stability, this work provides a practical pathway toward industrial-scale fabrication of high-performance ASSLBs.

Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) exhibit great potential due to their advantages of both sufficient strength and high ionic conductivity . However, their interfacial impendence and thickness hinder potential applications. Herein, a thin CSE with good interface performance is designed through the combination of immersion precipitation and in situ polymerization. By employing a nonsolvent in immersion precipitation, a porous poly(vinylidene fluoride-cohexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) membrane could be rapidly created. The pores in the membrane could accommodate sufficient well-dispersed inorganic Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) particles. Subsequent in situ polymerized 1,3‑dioxolane (PDOL) further protects LATP from reacting with lithium metal and supplies superior interfacial performance. The CSE has a thickness of ∼ 60 μm, ionic conductivity of 1.57 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , and oxidation stability of 5.3 V. The Li/1.25LATP-CSE/Li symmetric cell has a long cycling performance of 780 h at 0.3 mA cm −2 for 0.3 mAh cm −2 . The Li/1.25LATP-CSE/LiFePO 4 cell exhibits a discharge capacity of 144.6 mAh/g at 1C and a capacity retention of 97.72 % after 300 cycles. Continuous depletion of lithium salts due to the reconstruction of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) may be responsible for battery failure. The combination of the fabrication method and failure mechanism gives new insight into designing CSEs.
