Aromatics production via PET pyrolysis enhanced by LDPE hydrogen transfer over MGS catalyst: Experimental and theoretical calculations

Long Ren,Panpan Liu,Changsen Zhang

Hydrodeoxygenation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) presents a promising avenue for aromatic production; however, achieving complete deoxygenation alongside high aromatic relative peak area abundance remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a novel one-pot coupled pyrolysis process for waste PET and LDPE using a Mesoporous Granular Stacked Zeolite Catalyst (MGS), achieving a greater than 99% aromatic relative peak area abundance in product oil. Comprehensive experiments and characterization reveal that this outstanding catalytic performance stems from the MGS catalyst's exceptionally large specific surface area, abundant mesoporosity, and superior hydrogen transfer capability. Mechanistic investigations employing Density Functional Theory (DFT) elucidate the hydrogen transfer pathway: under the influence of oxygen and aluminium sites within the MGS framework, LDPE undergoes dehydrogenation and cyclization, while activated hydrogen species drive the catalytic pyrolysis of PET. Remarkably, the catalyst exhibits exceptional stability over multiple recycling cycles. This work establishes a promising and sustainable strategy for the chemical recycling of PET and LDPE and provides fundamental mechanistic insights for designing advanced catalysts for hydrogen transfer reactions.

Coupling Effect of LDPE Molecular Chain Structure and Additives on the Rheological Behaviors of Cable Insulating Materials

Jiacai Li,Zhicheng Si,Kai Shang,Yifan Wu,Yang Feng,Shihang Wang,Shengtao Li

The rheological behaviors of low-density polyethylene doped with additives (PEDA) determine the dynamic extrusion molding and structure of high-voltage cable insulation. However, the coupling effect of additives and molecular chain structure of LDPE on the rheological behaviors of PEDA is still unclear. Here, for the first time, the rheological behaviors of PEDA under uncross-linked conditions are revealed by experiment and simulation analysis, as well as rheology models. The rheology experiment and molecular simulation results indicate that additives can reduce the shear viscosity of PEDA, but the effect degree of different additives on rheological behaviors is determined by both chemical composition and topological structure. Combined with experiment analysis and the Doi–Edwards model, it demonstrates that the zero-shear viscosity is only determined by LDPE molecular chain structure. Nevertheless, different molecular chain structures of LDPE have different coupling effects with additives on the shear viscosity and non-Newtonian feature. Given this, the rheological behaviors of PEDA are predominant by the molecular chain structure of LDPE and are also affected by additives. This work can provide an important theoretical basis for the optimization and regulation of rheological behaviors of PEDA materials used for high-voltage cable insulation.Keywords:low-density polyethylene;additives;molecular chain structure;rheological behaviors;cable-insulating materials

LDPE Composites With Self-Healing of Modified SiO2 Particles and Inhibition of Electrical and Water-Mixed Tree Branches

Bo Zhu,Bo Yang,Xu Sun,Xinyu Tao,Xinlao Wei

Polymer insulation materials are affected by electromagnetic fields, mechanical stress, long-term illumination, ambient temperature, and other operating conditions. These conditions can cause water trees and electrical trees damage, resulting in insulation failure. Self-healing technology is the fundamental way to solve this problem. However, the effective self-healing of water trees and electrical tree damage in insulating materials is extremely challenging. To solve this problem, a dual-responsive self-healing insulating material was prepared by doping 1% modified silicon dioxide, which made a breakthrough in the self-healing and suppression of electrical trees and water trees, and doping modified silicon dioxide particles enhanced intermolecular interaction and improved material mechanics and insulation performance. When electrical and water-mixed tree branches aging occurs, oligomers generated by grafted siloxane groups and acrylate groups can effectively fill the pores of the electrical and water trees on top of the physical filling of the pores by silicon dioxide particles. The performance of the cured material is close to that of the pure sample. This method realizes the dual-response self-healing of the insulation material after the aging of the electro-hydro mixed tree, which provides a new way to repair polyethylene cable insulation and has great potential in practical applications.

LDPE/M-TiO2 composite films for modified atmosphere packaging to realize comprehensive preservation of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.)

Wenshuo Zhang,Xiaojie Liu,Shibo Qiu,Lin Chen,Xinghai Liu

BACKGROUND A shelf-life that is too short is the main problem with strawberries. Nano-TiO 2 can catalyze and oxidize ethylene under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation to eliminate its ripening effect on fruits and prolong the freshness period. RESULTS In this work, nano-TiO 2 modified by methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (KH570) was blended with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to prepare modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and the influence of TiO 2 content on films was analyzed before and after UV treatment. The results show that the modified nano-TiO 2 (M-TiO 2 ) can be uniformly distributed in LDPE, improving its mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, oxygen barrier and UV shielding properties. A modified atmosphere with low ethylene, low O 2 and high CO 2 can be created to inhibit the ripening and spoilage of strawberries. The weight loss rate of fruit can be effectively reduced. The tendency of fruit firmness decline and nutrient loss can be slowed and stabilized, contributing to controllable shelf-life. Excellent freshness preservation function can be realized without special UV treatment. CONCLUSION Since UV treatment is rare in actual storage and transportation, LDPE/M-TiO 2 composite film has practical value as MAP for strawberry and similar non-climacteric fruits. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Degradation of low-density polyethylene by the bacterium Rhodococcus sp. C-2 isolated from seawater

Zhen Rong,Zhi-Hao Ding,Yue-Hong Wu,Xue-Wei Xu

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which accounts for 20% of the global plastic production, is discharged in great quantities into the ocean, threatening marine life and ecosystems. Marine microorganisms have previously been reported to degrade LDPE plastics; however, the exploration of strains and enzymes that degrade LDPE is still limited. Here, an LDPE-degrading bacterium was isolated from seawater of the Changjiang Estuary, China and identified as Rhodococcus sp. C-2, the relative abundance of which was dramatically enhanced during PE-degrading microbial enrichment. The strain C-2 exhibited the degradation of LDPE films, leading to their morphological deterioration, reduced hydrophobicity and tensile strength, weight loss, as well as the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups in short-chain products. Sixteen bacterial enzymes potentially involved in LDPE degradation were screened using genomic, transcriptomic, and degradation product analyses. Thereinto, the glutathione peroxidase GPx with exposed active sites catalyzed the LDPE depolymerization with the cooperation of its dissociated superoxide anion radicals. Furthermore, an LDPE degradation model involving multiple enzymes was proposed. The present study identifies a novel PE-degrading enzyme (PEase) for polyethylene bioremediation and promotes the understanding of LDPE degradation.

Synergistic and antagonistic effects of ZnO/Zn2+ species and Brønsted/Lewis acid sites variations on the catalytic conversion of polyethylene to aromatics

Ruizhe Chen,Leilei Cheng,Wenbo Zhang,Jing Gu,Haoran Yuan,Yong Chen

The catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene for aromatic production is a promising method for waste plastic disposal and resource recovery. This study investigated the nature of metal species and the distribution of acidic sites in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) scission-aromatization reactions using metal-loaded zeolite catalysts. Under the influence of the 1.0Zn/MOR40 catalyst, LDPE achieved a maximum aromatic selectivity of 45.71 % at 500 °C, based on the total product composition. The results indicated that catalysts with a lower Brønsted acid site to Lewis acid site ratio (BAS/LAS) and a higher concentration of [ZnOH] + species favored the reaction, promoting the generation of olefin intermediates and aromatics while suppressing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formation. However, there was an optimal range for the BAS/LAS ratio and [ZnOH] + species concentration. Reaction results involving squalene and triacontane demonstrated that excessive dehydrogenation of reactants and insufficient BAS could hinder the progression of aromatization reactions, resulting in an increased proportion of PAHs. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the balance between the synergistic and antagonistic effects of metal-acid sites on the aromatization process.

Aromatic-rich oil production from catalytic co-pyrolysis of pine sawdust and LDPE with bifunctional biochar by different preparation methods

Haonnan Qiao,Yaqi Feng,Changsen Zhang

Background Catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass with waste plastics can produce high-quality chemicals, making it a potential alternative to fossil fuels. The production of aromatic-rich oil was achieved in this work by the catalytic co-pyrolysis of pine sawdust and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) using a series of biochar (BC) made using different preparation methods. Zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) was employed to activate the BC during the preparation process, owing to its optimal activity for the co-pyrolysis intermediates. The study compared the effects of BCs activated using different treatment methods on the yield and fractions of pine sawdust and LDPE co-pyrolysis in a fast pyrolysis tube furnace at 650 °C. Results The study indicates that the ZnCl 2 BC, prepared from pine sawdust by fast pyrolysis (F-AC), exhibited the best aromatic catalytic activity. The selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons was 72.53%, and the content of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was 32.17%. Conclusion The Diels–Alder reaction and aromatization were made more effective due to the Zn sites and large pore structure in F-AC. Using Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, it was found that F-AC contained more oxygen (O)-containing groups in abundance, which improved its adsorption capacity for reaction intermediates. At the same time, the porous structure and high SSA of BC provided a region for the reaction intermediate to interact with the active center containing O-containing groups. This enhanced the synergy between biomass and plastics and raised the selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons. It provides a reference for the application of carbon-based materials in the co-pyrolysis of biomass and waste plastics. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Fe-Ni Bimetallic Modified HZSM-5 for Efficient Preparation of Monocyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons via Co-Pyrolysis of PET and LDPE

Haijian Yang,Changsen Zhang,Lianfeng Shang,Hanfang Feng,Na Xiao

Plastic waste has become a serious global issue. Thermal treatment of waste PET faces critical drawbacks including severe reactor clogging and low-value oxygen-rich bio-oil, restricting large-scale chemical recycling. Co-pyrolysis with hydrogen-rich low-density polyethylene (LDPE) over modified zeolite provides a viable route to overcome these barriers. In this study, reaction parameters including temperature, plastic/catalyst ratio and PET/LDPE ratio were optimized, and Fe-Ni bimetallic modified HZSM-5 was fabricated via impregnation to boost monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) production. LDPE served as a hydrogen donor to facilitate PET deoxygenation via synergistic effects. At 550 °C with a plastic/catalyst ratio of 1:4 and PET/LDPE ratio of 2:3, the liquid yield hit 80.2%, and all detectable organic compounds in the liquid phase identified by GC–MS were aromatic hydrocarbons. Among all prepared mono- and bimetallic zeolites, 3Fe7Ni/HZ delivered optimal MAHs selectivity at 80.5%. This 20% promotion over unmodified HZSM-5 stems from balanced metal dispersion and tuned acid sites unique to Fe–Ni co-loading. This work offers a feasible strategy for converting waste plastics into high-value aromatics and further trials with varied metal contents will be needed to extend industrial applicability.

Experimental Study on the Catalytic Pyrolysis of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) over Phosphoric Acid–Activated Porous Carbon for Jet Fuel Production

Liang Feng,Xiaohua Li,Shanshan Shao

This study aims to achieve the high-value utilization of waste plastics via catalytic pyrolysis by developing a biomass-derived porous carbon catalyst prepared from corn cob through phosphoric acid activation, which enables the targeted conversion of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) into hydrocarbons within the jet fuel range. A series of catalysts with distinct pore structures and surface acid properties were obtained by systematically regulating preparation parameters, including carbonization temperature and phosphoric acid impregnation ratio. The catalytic performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor, and the effects of preparation conditions and reaction parameters on the distribution of gaseous, liquid, and solid products, as well as on liquid product selectivity, were systematically investigated. The results reveal a pronounced synergistic effect between the pore structure and acid properties of the catalyst, among which BDAPC-600-0.6, featuring a high acid density, abundant medium-strength acid sites, and a micropore fraction of approximately 40%, exhibits the best catalytic performance. This established a clear structure-activity relationship linking synthesis, structure, and performance. Under the optimized conditions of a pyrolysis temperature of 480 °C and a catalyst-to-feed mass ratio of 1, a liquid yield of 67.1 wt % was achieved, with the selectivity toward the target C8–C16 alkanes reaching up to 61.4 area %, while the selectivity toward

Effects of Blending and Grafting Modification with trans,trans-Dibenzalacetone (TTD) on the DC Electrical Properties of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

Huan Zheng,Haoran Wang,Yongsen Han,Xinyu Wang,Yujia Ju

To systematically compare the effects of different introduction methods on the direct-current (DC) electrical performance of polyethylene insulation, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) modified with an identical content of trans,trans-dibenzalacetone (TTD) was prepared via blending and grafting approaches. The DC breakdown strength, electrical conductivity, space charge behavior, surface potential decay, and trap distribution characteristics of the modified LDPE were comparatively investigated. The results indicate that both blending and grafting modification can effectively regulate the DC electrical behavior of LDPE and improve its insulation performance to varying extents. Compared with the blended system, the grafted samples exhibit a significantly higher DC breakdown strength, increasing from 353.20 kV/mm to 403.31 kV/mm, accompanied by a pronounced reduction in electrical conductivity and a markedly lower average volume charge density under a DC electric field of 40 kV/mm, indicating more effective suppression of space charge accumulation. Meanwhile, a slower surface potential decay process is observed in the grafted samples, revealing pronounced differences in charge trapping characteristics within the materials. Combined with quantum chemical calculations and trap formation analysis, it is suggested that the different introduction methods alter the existence state of functional molecules in the polymer matrix, thereby affecting the stability and effectiveness of charge trap structures. Chemical grafting is favorable for stably transforming the electron-capturing capability of TTD into intrinsic charge trapping structures within LDPE, enabling sustained and effective regulation of charge transport under DC electric fields. This study provides useful insights into the molecular design and optimization of polyethylene-based insulation materials for high voltage DC applications.

Co-modulated interface binding energy and electric field distribution of layer-structured PVDF-LDPE dielectric composites with BaTiO3: experiment and multiscale simulations

Bo Ruitian,Wang Chunfeng,Wang Yongliang,He Peigang,Han Zhidong

The layer-structured composites were built by the dielectric and insulating layers composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composites containing barium titanate (BT) to modulate the dielectric and energy storage properties of the composites. The simulations on the interface models for molecular dynamics and the geometric models for finite element analysis were performed together with the experimental characterization of the morphology, dielectric, and energy storage properties of the composites. The results revealed that polyethylene as an insulating layer played a successful role in modulating dielectric permittivity and breakdown strength while BT particles exerted positive effects in improving the miscibility between the composed layers and redistributing the electric field. The strong interface binding energy and the similar dielectric permittivity between the PVDF layer and the BT20/LDPE layer made for the layer-structured composites with a characteristic breakdown strength ( E b ) of 188.9 kV·mm −1 , a discharge energy density ( U d ) of 1.42 J·cm −3 , and a dielectric loss factor (tan δ ) of 0.017, which were increased by 94%, 141%, and decreased by 54% in comparison with those of the BT20/PVDF composite, respectively.

Study on the effect of novel intumescent flame retardant composed of β-cyclodextrin modified ammonium polyphosphate and THEIC on the flame retardancy of LDPE composites

Hongxiang Ou,Yining Ran,Mengli Pan,Honglai Xue

Enhancing polymer flame retardancy is crucial for lowering combustion-related exothermic heat and flue gas production. β-cyclodextrin microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (β-CD@APP) were synthesis through in-situ polymerization and combined with 1, 3, 5-tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) as a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) to enhance the flame retardancy of low density polyethylene (LDPE). The results showed that APP's hydrophobic characteristic increased, which enhanced its polymer dispersibility . Compared with LDPE, the LOI value of β-CD@APP/THEIC/LDPE (LDPE5) was enhanced from 17.5% to 28.7% and the composites could meet the UL-94 V-0 standard. Smoke volume and thermal decomposition rate were reduced. Furthermore, a stable char layer was found, which can be seen from the SEM of the char slag and the Raman results. According to the above results, the thermal decomposition and possible mechanism of flame retardants in LDPE composites during combustion were studied.
