Expediting the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers is crucial for plasmonic materials to improve the performance of photocatalysts. However, it remains a significant challenge to strengthen the local surface plasma resonance (LSPR) through the modulation of surface functional groups. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is combined with two typical semiconductor materials to form Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS (TCS) with dominated surface O x groups and Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 3 N 4 (TCN) with surface-terminated F x species. The obtained TCS composite shows a higher photocatalytic performance (96.7 %) than TCN (86.7 %) and the corresponding bare catalysts in the degradation of tetracycline within 60 min under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the degradation rate of Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS composite decreases by only 2.3 % after 4 cycles photocatalytic process, which is more stable than Ti 3 C 2 T x /C 3 N 4 (3.3 %) and CdS (39.3 %). The improved photocatalytic activity and stability mainly result from the enhanced LSPR effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. In particular, the better performance of TCS compared to TCN indicates that the LSPR effect is highly related to the surface-terminated [O]/[F] ratio. These results directly provide a strategy to enhance the electric field dynamics of MXene materials for improving photocatalytic performance.

In this work, a sensitive and portable fiber-optic WaveFlex biosensor is developed for the detection of paraoxon pesticide in agricultural products. A combination of simulation and experiment is used to analyze the distribution of the evanescent field in optical fiber. The flexible W-shaped optical fiber biosensor (OFB) based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect is developed, also known as WaveFlex biosensor. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were immobilized on the surface of the optical fiber probe to successfully excite the LSPR phenomenon. In addition, in order to modify the optical fiber probe, cerium dioxide nanorods (CeO2-NRs) and tungsten disulfide quantum dots (WS2-QDs) were functionalized. It is used to enhance the biocompatibility of the sensor and increase the specific surface area of the fiber probe. The enzymatic determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) is usually based on cholinesterase and organophosphorus hydrolase. Paraoxon has an irreversible inhibitory effect on butyrylcholinesterase. The content of paraoxon was detected by the inhibitory effect of paraoxon on butyrylcholinesterase. The reproducibility, reusability, stability, selectivity, and pH tests of the W-shaped WaveFlex sensor and its application in real samples are evaluated using different concentrations of paraoxon solution. The linear range of the sensor is 0– $100~\mu $ g/mL, and the limit of detection (LoD) is $7.999~\mu $ g/mL. The sensitivity is as high as 0.0312 nm/( $\mu $ g/mL), which verifies that the sensor provides an indispensable technology, cost-effective and portable solution for paraoxon-specific detection.

Environmental pollution poses a pressing global challenge, and photocatalysis represents a promising remediation technology. However, photogenerated carrier recombination remains a critical limitation. In this work, silver quantum dots (Ag QDs) were anchored onto sea urchin-like TiO 2 (U-TiO 2 ) to construct an Ag–TiO 2 interfacial electron transfer channel. This channel facilitated rapid carrier separation and migration, thereby effectively suppressing recombination. Moreover, the Ag QDs exhibited a pronounced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect that broadened the light absorption range into the visible and near-infrared regions. Under LSPR excitation, the electron chemical potential in Ag QDs was elevated, further enhancing photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the unique urchin-like morphology of U-TiO 2 provided a large specific surface area, enhancing pollutant adsorption and offering abundant reactive sites. Benefiting from the synergy between the interfacial electron transfer channel and LSPR, the Ag QD–modified U-TiO 2 photocatalyst exhibited outstanding degradation performance and great potential for environmental purification applications.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been received widespread attention for NO 2 detection at room temperature . However, the TMDs-based gas sensors usually possess inferior response capability and suffer from humidity interference due to lack of sufficient reaction activation energy , which seems tough to achieve the detection of ppb-level gases and hinder the practical applications. Herein, we propose a visible light-assisted-type gas sensor based on Au-decorated WS 2 , endowing high-performance detection of NO 2 at room temperature. Benefited from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhancement effect induced by the modified Au nanoparticles (NPs), the visible light-assisted Au/WS 2 gas sensor can implement the detection of NO 2 gas as low as 20 ppb. Moreover, the maximum drift of the sensor response value is only 3% in the range of 10%−90% RH, indicating the stabilized anti-humidity ability. The effective regulation of transmission channel by the modified noble metal and the enhancement of visible light absorption of WS 2 through taking full advantage of the LSPR effect are the main reasons for realizing low concentration detection and improving the anti-humidity ability. Therefore, the visible light-assisted gas detection mode can serve as a proof-of-concept to provide an effective approach for the detection of trace gases at room temperature.

Designing highly efficient photocatalyst for the valorization of CO 2 is an ideal strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and utilize solar energy. In this study, a S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst is fabricated by solvothermal impregnation of ZnO on W 18 O 49 for photocatalytic CO 2 N -formylation of aniline. The localized surface plasmon resonance effect of W 18 O 49 improves the absorption capacity for long-wave light significantly, and the hot electrons generated in W 18 O 49 with a high energy can migrate to the conduction band of ZnO and thus enhance the photocatalytic reduction ability. Meanwhile, the S-scheme heterojunction facilitates the separation of photoinduced charge carriers and preserves the redox ability of W 18 O 49 /ZnO composite photocatalyst. The conversion of aniline reaches 99.1% after 5 h reaction under visible light irradiation at room temperature with an N -formylaniline selectivity of 100%. A possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed. This study paves a promising way for the design of highly efficient photocatalyst and the sustainable utilization of CO 2 .

Among heavy-metal-free III-V colloidal nanocrystals, Indium antimony (InSb) stands out as a promising candidate for constructing solution-processed broadband photodetectors (PDs) owing to its ultranarrow bandgap and exceptionally high carrier mobility. However, the high affinity of Sb element for oxygen makes InSb susceptible to native surface oxidation, a process that creates barriers to carrier transport and reduces light absorption efficiency, thereby significantly degrading the performance of InSb-based PDs. In this study, we propose a solution-based route for fabricating InSb nanowires (NWs) decorated with Au nanoparticles (NPs) to fabricate a broadband, self-driven PD. The incorporation of Au NPs significantly reduces the surface trap states introduced by surface native oxide layer and enhances the performance of the PD across the visible to near-infrared (NIR) region. Compared with bare InSb NWs PDs, the Au/InSb nanohybrid device achieves a dramatic improvement in the switching ratio, reaching approximately 300 under visible-to-NIR illumination at an intensity of 36 mW/cm 2 . The maximum responsivity and detectivity values of the Au/InSb nanohybrid PD were 100 times higher than those of bare InSb NWs. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations were employed to analyze the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic field across Au/InSb nanohybrids. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au NPs and the transfer of hot electrons were identified as key factors contributing to the observed performance enhancement. This study serves as a foundational exploration of the potential for high-performance PDs utilizing Au NPs and other narrow-band III-V materials exhibiting LSPR effects.

In this work, we reported that by using a strong thiol ligand as the morphology-directing reagent, a series of Au nanoparticles with plate-like surface sub-structures could be successfully obtained via a one-pot seedless synthesis. The size and the density of the plates on the surface of Au can be readily tuned with the amount of the thiol ligand, resembling different roughness of the surface. Arising from the different surface roughness , the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of these shape and morphological alike Au nanoparticles can be continuously tuned within the visible-NIR region. The broad LSPR absorptions and feasible tunability make the Au nanoparticles suitable candidate for plasmonic-related applications. Interestingly, huge SERS enhancement was simultaneously achieved based on the specific surface roughness. Our results demonstrate the great potentials for tuning the LSPR and SERS of Au nanostructures through the engineering of the surface morphologies, which would assist for the design, synthesis, and applications of Au-based plasmonic nanomaterials in various fields.

The detection of lead ions (Pb2+) is crucial due to its harmful effects on health and the environment. In this article, what we believe to be a novel dielectric-metal hybrid structure localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor for ultra-trace detection of Pb2+ is proposed, featuring a zinc sulfide layer, silver nanodisks (Ag-disks), and graphene oxide (GO) covering the Ag-disks. The sensor works by detecting the variation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on its surface when Pb2+ cleaves a substrate strand linked to a DNAzyme, causing the AuNPs modified on the substrate strand to disperse. The LSPR sensor boasts superior performance with a bulk refractive index sensitivity of 714.34 nm/RIU. It also exhibits a log-linear response to Pb2+ concentrations ranging from 10 pM to 100 nM, with a sensitivity of 3.93 nm/log(µM) and a detection limit of 10 pM. This represents a 1.25-fold increase in sensitivity and an order of magnitude lower detection limit compared to the GO-uncoated sensor. The improved performance is due to the abundant reactive groups and expansive surface area of graphene oxide, which facilitate the absorption of biochemical molecules. In addition, the sensor has good specificity and stability, holding significant potential for a variety of practical applications, and paving the way for LSPR sensors in detecting trace heavy metal ions.

Here we report the peroxidase-like [email protected] nanozyme as an integrated nanosensor for selective detection of silver ions (Ag + ), where the nanozyme plays the roles as both the signal trigger and reporter simultaneously. This method relies on two critical chemical reactions, including (1) the unique inhibitory effect of Ag + on the nanozyme triggered H 2 O 2 decomposition at weak acid environment and (2) H 2 O 2 induced Ag + reduction onto the nanozyme surface at basic environment, leading to a blueshift in the localized surface plasmonic resonance wavelength (LSPR λ max ) of the nanosensor. With this simple strategy, we demonstrated the sensitive and selective detection of Ag + over a dynamic range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 nM by UV–visible spectroscopy, which is below the permitted level of Ag + in drinking water by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This method also exhibits satisfying recovery efficiency for Ag + detection both in tap water and spring water from the Yuelu Mountain. With this satisfying sensing performance and excellent stability of nanoprobes, this strategy is promising for the detection of Ag + in environment monitoring and food safety analysis.

Digenite Cu1.8S and covellite CuS nanoparticles can both be obtained through the hot-injection synthetic process by controlling the synthesis temperature and time. Compared with digenite Cu1.8S, covellite CuS attracts more attention due to the extraordinary LSPR effect. However, digenite Cu1.8S is thermally more stable and suitable for applications at elevated temperature. In this work, LSPR was found to be induced by incorporation of manganese (Mn) into originally weakly absorbing digenite Cu1.8S nanoparticles. In addition, it was observed that the intensity of the LSPR effect could be controlled by tuning the manganese content in the new Mn-incorporated digenite Cu1.8S (CuxMnyS) nanoparticles.

Phototherapy, including photothermal and photodynamic therapy, has gained extensive attention in the tumor treatment field recently, while synergistic therapy can significantly improve curative effects. However, a complicated photo-responsive nanosystem, different excitation wavelengths, and low tissue depth hindered its actual application. Herein, single near-infrared responsive PEGylated defective MoO2 nanocrystals were fabricated by a green hydrothermal method. The photothermal and photodynamic performances of the samples were presented in detail under a safe power of 1064 nm (NIR-II, 1.0 W cm−2). Interestingly, the photodynamic properties were prompted by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) photothermal effect obviously, and the collaborative enhancement mechanism was explored in depth. Subsequently, the in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated on the 4T1 cancer cells under NIR-II irradiation. This work may provide guidance for the facile fabrication of TMOs for NIR-II responsive and enhanced dual-modal phototherapy.

In this study, we develop a filter paper-supported Ag nanowire (AgNWs) substrate coated with a tunable layer of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) metal-organic framework (MOF) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. The thickness of the ZIF-67 layer is precisely controlled by adjusting the soaking time, allowing us to investigate the influence of MOF thickness on SERS performance using probes with different sizes. Sensitivity for large, impenetrable molecules such as thiram and rhodamine 6G (R6G) are primarily governed by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), while smaller, penetrable molecules like 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) exhibit enhanced sensitivity driven by charge transfer (CT) effects due to their ability to penetrate the MOF layer. A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation reveals that the porous structure of ZIF-67 facilitates electric field propagation to the probe, maintaining significant LSPR effects even beyond 200 nm from the AgNWs. Practical applicability is demonstrated using a wiping mode to detect thiram spiked on apple surfaces, with reliable linear detection achieved across a wide range of concentrations. This study underscores the potential of MOF-based hybrid SERS substrates for real-world applications, leveraging the complementary roles of CT and electromagnetic (EM) mechanisms to enhance sensitivity.
