Built C@HTO-Al-F for electro-assisted Li + adsorption via Al 3+ /F − co-doping. • Carbon coating increases BET from 71.7 to 126.6 m 2 g −1 . • The C@HTO-Al-F electrode achieves a Li + adsorption capacity of 51.4 mg g −1 . • Li + binding affinity to −3.77 eV by regulating charge distribution and interlayer spacing. The selective extraction of lithium from salt lake brines is severely challenged by low Li + concentrations and the interference of coexisting Na + /K + ions. To address these limitations, an electro-assisted adsorption strategy was developed utilizing an Al F co-doped Li 2 TiO 3 ion-sieve encapsulated by a conductive carbon layer (C@HTO-Al-F). Structural characterization reveals that the synergistic incorporation of Al 3+ and F − induces a tailored lattice contraction-reducing the unit cell volume by 0.7 Å 3 -while the subsequent carbon coating dramatically expands the specific surface area from 71.7 to 126.6 m 2 g −1 . This multi-scale modulation simultaneously enhances the intrinsic ion-sieving effect, establishes a continuous electronic transmission network, and maximizes the density of accessible active sites. Consequently, under an applied voltage of 2.0 V, the C@HTO-Al-F electrode delivers a superior Li + adsorption capacity of 51.4 mg g −1 with exceptional selectivity, achieving separation factors of 47.8 against Na + and 26.9 against K + . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidate the atomic-scale mechanism, showing that co-doping optimizes the surface charge distribution and interlayer spacing, thereby strengthening the Li + binding affinity (adsorption energy of −3.77 eV). Furthermore, the conductive carbon shell mitigates interfacial polarization and ensures robust structural stability over long-term cycling. The work establishes a potent co-doping protocol for modulating ion-sieve structures, offering a promising avenue for high-efficiency lithium recovery from complex, multi-ionic aqueous resources.

Lithium-based ceramic tritium breeders would attack the blanket structural materials and produce brittle corrosion layers, causing potential safety hazard. Herein, coated breeders were proposed as advanced tritium breeders to address the issue. Carbon (C), titanium nitride (TiN) and titanium carbide (TiC) were investigated as inert protective shells because they show excellent stability and chemical compatibility with Li 2 TiO 3 and Li 4 SiO 4 . Moreover, for the first time, the C and TiN coated Li 2 TiO 3 and Li 4 SiO 4 pebbles were successfully fabricated by fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) process, which would significantly decrease the brittle corrosion layers and increase the safety. The deposition behavior and interface reactions were systemically investigated.

The instability of Li 4 TiO 4 to carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and moisture (H 2 O) was considered to be the main obstacle to its practical application as a tritium breeding material. Using Li 2 TiO 3 ceramic coating as a physical barrier wrapped on the surface of Li 4 TiO 4 pebbles was still considered to be the optimal solution. At present, increasing the thickness and strength of the Li 2 TiO 3 coating to increase the service life of this core-shell pebble has become an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, we successfully wrapped a thick and uniform Li 2 TiO 3 coating on the Li 4 TiO 4 pebble by an optimized granulation method assisted only by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The Li 4 TiO 4 -Li 2 TiO 3 core-shell pebbles have high shell thickness (∼370 µm), relatively high wall thickness uniformity (78.86±3.07%) and good sphericity (90.72±1.88%) with a crush load of 47.73±1.49 N. It was demonstrated that PVP not only plays the role of bridge bonding between powders but also serves as a template to induce powder to be assembled layer by layer to form a uniform core-shell structure.

Developing low-cost and renewable quasi-solid-state electrolytes (QSSEs) is critical for advancing energy storage technologies. Cellulose-based QSSEs have attracted considerable attention for their inherent renewability and cost advantages. However, discontinuous Li+ conduction pathways within cellulose frameworks severely limit their development as advanced electrolyte materials. Herein, an “ion-bridge” strategy is proposed, in which zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) serves as a bridge to connect α-Li2TiO3 and bacterial cellulose (BC), forming a BC/ZIF-67@Li2TiO3 hybrid electrolyte. This strategy effectively constructs interconnected long-range Li+ transport channels within the electrolyte, achieving a high ionic conductivity of 2.3 × 10-3 S cm-1 and a lithium-ion transference number of 0.81. Notably, α-Li2TiO3 serves as a highly favorable filler with excellent Li+ conductivity. Moreover, it provides an “active defense” mechanism against lithium dendrites through a tip-shielding effect, thereby reducing the risk of dendrite penetration. The Li|BC/ZIF-67@Li2TiO3|LiFePO4 (LFP) full cell demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, retaining 89% of its initial capacity after 900 cycles at 1 C. This work provides a robust strategy for developing QSSEs that balance electrochemical performance and sustainability.

In this study, a shrinkage matching process was developed to achieve synchronous shrinkage of Li 4 SiO 4 and Li 2 TiO 3 during sintering, enabling the successful fabrication of a core-shell structured tritium breeder material with a Li 4 SiO 4 core and Li 2 TiO 3 shell to address the hygroscopicity of Li 4 SiO 4 . The shell thickness of the Li 4 SiO 4 @Li 2 TiO 3 core-shell breeding materials can be controlled in the range of 0–235 μm, and their moisture stability was systematically investigated at 10 % RH, 50 % RH, and 80 % RH. Results showed that increasing shell thickness significantly enhanced phase and mechanical stability in humid environments, although excessively thick shells reduced overall Li content. To understand these improvements, the moisture stabilization mechanism of this core-shell breeding ceramics was comprehensively analyzed. Notably, the core-shell pebbles with a shell thickness of 146 μm exhibited a satisfactory crushing load (80.5 N) and a suitable Li content (16.87 wt%), and maintained superior moisture stability after storage at 80 % RH for 14 days. This novel concept, preparation route, and elucidated mechanism of utilizing Li 2 TiO 3 shell to enhance the moisture stability of Li 4 SiO 4 matrix provide a new strategy for performance enhancement of advanced tritium breeding materials.

Insulating materials are essential for electron-blocking functionality in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells; however, their intrinsic lack of efficient ion-transport pathways severely limits electrochemical performance. Herein, an in situ phase-transition strategy is employed to construct an epitaxial core-shell structure electrolyte, enabling the formation of a surface superionic conductive layer and fundamentally resolving the problem of cell failure based on insulator electrolytes. During cell preheating, the solid-phase transition of LiOH–TiO 2 precursor induces the spontaneous self-assembly of a unique Li 2 TiO 3 @TiO 2 core–shell architecture, which establishes continuous three-dimensional fast-ion transport pathways along interfacial regions. Besides, experimental characterizations combined with density functional theory calculations indicate that the core–shell heterostructure dramatically enhances charge transfer kinetics via synergistic interfacial effects involving oxygen vacancy engineering, energy band alignment, and electron-ion coupling. Consequently, fuel cells based on this electrolyte achieve an ion conductivity of 0.223 S/cm and a peak power density of 759 mW/cm 2 at 550°C, while still maintaining an effective power output of 189 mW/cm 2 at low temperature of 390°C. This strategy of in situ phase-transition induced core–shell structure to achieve surface superionic conduction provides new opportunities for developing high-performance solid-state ion devices operating at low temperatures.
