The deep-seated location of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced osteomyelitis within the host, combined with insufficient antibiotic penetration into bone and the capacity of MRSA to form biofilms, may render conventional therapies ineffective. A promising alternative is chemodynamic therapy (CDT), which locally generates cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals. However, the efficacy of such agents as monotherapy is significantly compromised by the hypoxic microenvironment characteristic of deep-seated bone infections. This study introduces a copper-doped molybdenum boride (Cu@MoB) nanozyme, which exhibits impressive photothermal conversion and multi-enzyme mimetic activities (oxidase and peroxidase), thereby enabling effective cooperative photothermal therapy (PTT) and CDT. In a mouse model of MRSA osteomyelitis, the PTT/CDT mediated by Cu@MoB successfully eradicated bacteria from the intramedullary space and enhanced the repair of the infected bone. Furthermore, it exhibited superior efficacy in vivo compared to vancomycin, the gold standard antibiotic currently employed in clinical practice. An increase in TGF-β levels in the bone marrow associated with inflammation was observed following treatment, indicating that the inhibition of the inflammatory microenvironment contributed to the effectiveness of treatment. Further transcriptomic sequencing analyses revealed that Cu@MoB downregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory genes, including Il1b, Il6, Tnf, and Ccl2, while inhibiting several inflammatory pathways, such as the Toll-like receptor, NF-κB, and Th17 pathways. Cu@MoB has the potential to serve as a MBene-based nanoplatform for the synergistic treatment of drug-resistant, deep-seated infections, representing a strategy for anti-infective bone defect repair. Statement of significance The treatment of MRSA-induced osteomyelitis remains challenging due to the presence of deep-seated infection foci, biofilm formation, and limited antibiotic penetration. We developed a copper-doped MBene nanozyme (Cu@MoB) that integrates photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy into a single platform for synergistic antibacterial treatment. Unlike conventional approaches, our rationally designed Cu@MoB leverages copper doping to simultaneously enhance Fenton-like catalytic activity under near-physiological pH while maintaining excellent photothermal conversion efficiency. This work demonstrates, for the first time, that Cu@MoB-mediated PTT/CDT synergy not only eradicates intramedullary MRSA more effectively than vancomycin but also modulates the osteoimmune microenvironment by downregulating pro-inflammatory pathways (TLR, NF-κB, Th17) to promote bone regeneration. This approach offers a paradigm-shifting strategy for treating drug-resistant deep-seated infections. Download: Download high-res image (303KB) Download: Download full-size image

The magnesium-based hydrogen storage composite system Li–Mg–N–H (Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH) has attracted considerable attention due to its moderate operating temperature and high reversible capacity of 5.6 wt%, but its sluggish hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics and poor cycling stability limit practical applications. Introducing an efficient catalyst is key to overcoming these issues. Herein, for the first time, an MBene material is introduced into a solid-state hydrogen storage system. Mo 4/3 B 2- x with a flower-like structure is successfully prepared by selective etching of the MAB phase (Mo 4/3 Y 2/3 AlB 2 ) and is then added as a catalyst into the Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH system. The improving effect and the underlying mechanism on hydrogen storage performance are systematically investigated. The results show that the composite with 10 wt% Mo 4/3 B 2- x exhibits optimal comprehensive performance. The onset temperatures for hydrogen absorption and desorption are significantly reduced from 110/130°C to 65/106°C, respectively. The hydrogen absorption/desorption capacities exceed 4.7 wt% under isothermal conditions at 180°C/170°C, and the apparent activation energy for hydrogen desorption decreases from 117.0 kJ/mol to 87.5 kJ/mol. Remarkably, after 100 cycles, the reversible capacity remains above 4.47 wt%, demonstrating excellent cycling stability. Mechanistic studies combined with DFT calculations reveal that the flower-like Mo 4/3 B 2- x dissociates into fine petals and becomes highly dispersed in the matrix during ball milling. The interaction between the catalyst and the matrix effectively weakens the N–H and Mg–N bonds and promotes the retention of the cubic phase Li 2 MgN 2 H 2 in the hydrogen desorption product, which is more favorable for rehydrogenation. Meanwhile, abundant boron vacancies in the catalyst structure provide fast diffusion channels for hydrogen atoms, and the highly dispersed nano-petals effectively separate the matrix particles, collectively enhancing the kinetics and cycling performance. This work opens a new direction for the application of MBene materials in solid-state hydrogen storage and provides a new strategy for the rational design of high-performance hydrogen storage catalysts.

Regulating the electronic structure of Fe active sites is an effective strategy to enhance peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-triggered high-valent iron-oxo (Fe IV =O) systems for environmental remediation. In this study, we designed the emerging two-dimensional Mo 4 / 3 B 2 MBene with ordered metal vacancies as ideal anchoring sites for Fe Ⅲ to boost PMS activation and regulate Fe IV =O generation. The Mo 4 / 3 B 2 MBene/Fe Ⅲ /PMS system exhibits outstanding catalytic performance: the pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) of bisphenol A (BPA) degradation is 200-fold higher than that of the pristine Fe Ⅲ /PMS system, and over 90% of BPA can be removed within 5 min. PMSO probe experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that surface-anchored Fe Ⅲ acts as the active center to activate PMS via direct electron transfer for Fe IV =O formation, and verify the critical role of ordered metal vacancies. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy reveal that sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals serve as supplementary reactive oxygen species in the Mo 4 / 3 B 2 MBene/Fe Ⅲ /PMS system. This work provides a new Fe site design strategy to promote Fe IV =O generation for water purification.

Aqueous copper-selenium (Cu-Se) batteries have received increasing attention in energy storage research due to their high theoretical specific capacity and inherent safety. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics of the selenium (Se) cathode hinder its development. Herein, an accordion-like structure transition metal boride (Mo 4/3 B 2 T z MBene) with ordered metal vacancies is synthesized and employed as Se catalytic host material for aqueous Cu-Se batteries. The Mo 4/3 B 2 T z host material exhibits a unique layered structure, abundant active sites, and high electrical conductivity, which significantly improves the kinetic properties of the selenium redox reaction in aqueous Cu-Se batteries. As a result, the Se-Mo 4/3 B 2 T z cathode delivers a high discharge capacity of 1010 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and greatly enhances rate performance with a reversible capacity of 693 mAh g −1 at 25 A g −1 . Meanwhile, the Se-Mo 4/3 B 2 T z cathode maintains an impressive 755 mAh g −1 discharge capacity after 1500 cycles at 20 A g −1 . Furthermore, the conversion mechanism of aqueous Cu-Se batteries is illustrated by different characterization methods and density functional theory calculations. This work introduces a distinctive approach to accelerating the reaction kinetics of aqueous Cu-Se batteries via MBene-based catalytic host material.

Herein, an in situ grown S-scheme MnS/MnB-MBene heterojunction (denoted as SM x ) was fabricated via alkaline etching of Mn 2 AlB 2 followed by controlled sulfurization. This strategy effectively removes the Al layer, exposes abundant active sites, and simultaneously establishes an intimate S-scheme heterojunction that promotes spatial charge separation and boosts redox kinetics. The optimized SM6 catalyst achieves a remarkable H 2 evolution rate of 1704.81 μmol g −1 h −1 , along with 99.16% conversion of 5-HMF and 79.42% selectivity toward 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furoic acid (HMFCA). These values correspond to 15.97-fold and 7.7-fold enhancements in H 2 evolution compared to pristine Mn 2 AlB 2 and MnB-MBene, respectively. The spatially separated redox sites—MnB-MBene as oxidation sites and MnS as reduction sites—enable efficient, site-specific catalytic reactions, significantly enhancing overall performance. This study provides a rational design strategy for MBene-based heterojunctions and offers insights into advancing biomass photorefinery coupled with solar fuel production. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 光催化析氢耦合生物质高值化转化, 为清洁能源转化与高附加值化学品合成开辟了一条可持续路径。

Sesamol is a momentous marker for evaluating the quality of sesame or sesame products. In this study, a new strategy for fabricating portable smartphone sensor based on violet phosphorene (VP)/two-dimensional transition metal borides (MBene) nanozyme modified with Au − Ag bimetallic nanoparticles (Au − AgNPs) on the surface of the screen-printed electrode, which is synthesized under the guidance of machine learning (ML) with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithms, is described for intelligent sensing of sesamol in farmland and agricultural fields. A fluorine-free hydrothermal-assisted alkane etching strategy is used to prepare the fence-like MoAlB-MBene. Highly environmentally stable VP/MoAlB-MBene nanozyme decorated by Au − Ag bimetallic nanoparticles is obtained by ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation with XGBoost assistance. The ML models including artificial neural network, support vector machine and XGBoost for the synthesis of nanozyme are contrasted and discussed, and the XGBoost algorithm is found as the most accurate model for synthesizing nanozyme due to the highest value of correlation coefficient. The nanozyme-modified screen-printed carbon electrode coupled with the palm-sized smartphone-controlled wireless electrochemical device as a portable wireless intelligent sensing platform for the determination of sesamol in a wider linear range of 0.1 ∼ 1000 μmol/L with a lower limit of detection of 21 nmol/L, which enable the on-site determination of 10 varieties of sesame seeds. This work will provide a new reference for the one-step preparation of bimetallic nanoparticles decorated graphene-like nanozyme guided by ML for cost-effective, simple, fast detection of phytochemicals in agricultural products using a portable smartphone sensor.
