ZnIn2S4/MIL-53-NH2 composite photocatalysts for H2O2 production: Synergistic effect of sulfur vacancy and heterostructure

Yong Tang,Jianhao Qiu,Dingliang Dai,Guanglu Xia,Biyao Fang,Yixin Li,Jianfeng Yao

Defect engineering is used in the development of photocatalysts and has received widespread attention for achieving efficient photocatalysis. Here, ZnIn 2 S 4 with rich sulfur vacancies (V S -ZnIn 2 S 4 ) was integrated with MIL-53-NH 2 for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production from O 2 reduction under visible light. The sulfur vacancy could effectively promote charge separation and O 2 capture, and the heterostructure between ZnIn 2 S 4 and MIL-53-NH 2 further inhibits charge recombination, which promises highly boosted photocatalytic activities. In ambient air and pure water, V S -ZnIn 2 S 4 /MIL-53-NH 2 heterostructures exhibit superior photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production performance (705 μmol·L −1 ) relative to those of monomeric Znln 2 S 4 (78 μmol·L −1 ), V S -Znln 2 S 4 (210 μmol·L −1 ), MIL-53-NH 2 (38 μmol·L −1 ), as well as ZnIn 2 S 4 /MIL-53-NH 2 (395 μmol·L −1 ). Mechanistic studies have confirmed that the main pathway for H 2 O 2 formation on V S -ZnIn 2 S 4 /MIL-53-NH 2 is ⋅O 2 – -triggered O 2 reduction, and sulfur vacancy can adsorb and activate O 2 to facilitate the production of ⋅O 2 – . This study provides new insights into catalyst design and green synthesis of H 2 O 2 .

Indium sulfide deposited MIL-53(Fe) microrods: Efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium

Linbo Luo,Sheying Dong,Hao Cui,Longhui Sun,Tinglin Huang

The ecosystems and human health were seriously threatened by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in wastewater. In this article, using the idea of the highly matched energy band structure between indium sulfide (In 2 S 3 ) and MIL-53(Fe), a Type-II heterojunction has been constructed by loading In 2 S 3 on MIL-53(Fe) microrod to overcome the fault like high recombination rates of photogenerated electron-holes of In 2 S 3 . The composite with 20:1 mass ratio of In 2 S 3 to MIL-53(Fe) (IM-2) was adopted as an optimal sample for efficient photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction under visible light . Various characterization techniques were used to verify the characteristics of composites and delved into the structure-effect relationship between this heterojunction and its activity. Results showed that the reaction rate constants of the photoreduction process over IM-2 was ~ 4 and 26 times higher than those of pure In 2 S 3 and MIL-53(Fe), respectively, and the catalyst could maintain superior removal efficiency (88.6%) and steady crystal structure after four cycles. First-principles calculations further illustrated that the heterostructure formed between In 2 S 3 and MIL-53(Fe) could effectively accelerate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, thus improving the photocatalytic reduction performance. Moreover, the active species analyses revealed that the superoxide radicals and electrons were mainly involved in the reduction of Cr(VI).

Yu-Han Sun,Liu Yang,Xian-Xian Ji,Yuan-Zhen Wang,Yu-Long Liu,Ying Fu,Fei Ye

Flusilazole is a triazole fungicide with residues that are potentially toxic to humans. It enters the human body mainly through food, although its bactericidal activity is substantial. In this study, an electrochemical sensor Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C with a core–shell structure was constructed to efficiently detect flusilazole by annealing MIL-53(Fe) which was prepared by a simple solvothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the apparent morphology of MIL-53(Fe) and Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C , and their structures were further characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and the mapping of elements by energy dispersive spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C in the detection of flusilazole was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry under optimal conditions. The results of the study indicate that the Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C electrochemical sensor displayed excellent detection capabilities for flusilazole, where the sensor exhibited a wide detection range from 1.00 × 10 −4 to 1.00 × 10 −12 mol/L with an incredibly low LOD of 593 fM, making it highly sensitive to trace amounts of flusilazole. Moreover, Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C demonstrated superior reproducibility, stability, and resistance to interference, highlighting its reliability in practical applications. The sensor was also successfully utilized to quantitatively detect flusilazole in various real samples, which suggests that Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C has broad-spectrum environmental resistance and can effectively and rapidly detect flusilazole residues in different types of food items and environmental matrices. The study also delved into the mechanism of Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C for the detection of flusilazole, providing a deeper understanding of the functionality of this sensor. Overall, these findings emphasize the practical significance of Fe/Fe 2 O 3 @C as an electrochemical sensor, showcasing its potential for real-world applications in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Improved OER Performance at High Current Density for the CuCo2S4@MIL-53(Fe) Composite Electrocatalyst

Yu Qinyuan,Li Jiahui,Wang Yufen,Wei Xuedong

Transition metal sulfides (TMS) have drawn increasing research interest owing to their unique electronic structure. They hold broad prospects in accelerating the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water electrolysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) feature controllable electronic structures and specific surface areas, which facilitate the adsorption of reactants and expedite interfacial electron transfer. Leveraging the above-mentioned advantages of the two materials, a kind of composite electrocatalyst, CuCo 2 S 4 @MIL-53(Fe)/NF, was synthesized by growing MIL-53(Fe) in-situ onto CuCo 2 S 4 nanowires supported on nickel foam. This composite electrocatalyst can accelerate charge transfer, significantly increase the number of active sites, and enhance both electrocatalytic activity and stability. The electrocatalyst CuCo 2 S 4 @MIL-53(Fe)/NF can drive the OER with an overpotential of 390 mV at a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 . Moreover, it still demonstrates excellent catalytic activity after 75 h of testing. This study not only broadens the avenues for sulfide composites but also provides an experimental basis and support for the direct combination of metal chalcogenides and Fe-based MOFs as electrocatalysts.

Interfacial engineering in MIL-53(Al)/PEBA mixed matrix membranes for efficient n-butanol/water separation

Xin-Ru Chen,Heng Mao,Qiu-Ying Zhang,Wei-Min Liu,Shen-Hui Li,Qian-Qian Li,Li-Hao Xu,Yan-Mei Zhang,Xin-Yue Zhang,Jun-Jie Liu,Ao Kou,Zhi-Ping Zhao

Interfacial engineering in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is essential to attain superior separation performance and ensure long-term operational stability. In this research, a range of novel MMMs were designed and fabricated for pervaporation (PV) separation of n-butanol/water solution by introducing the MIL-53(Al) particles and three variants (i.e., MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 , MIL-53(Al)–NO 2 , MIL-53(Al)–OH) into PEBA polymer matrix. These four MIL-53(Al) counterparts were synthesized via a microwave-assisted solvothermal method by selectively functionalizing the terephthalic acid linkers with different chemical groups. The functional MIL-53(Al) variants were employed to explore the relationship between membrane microstructures and PV performance by manipulating the interfacial interactions with PEBA matrix. The findings reveal that incorporating MIL-53(Al) variants not only displayed excellent interfacial compatibility and uniform dispersion within PEBA matrix, but also constructed the preferential transport pathways for n-butanol over water molecules. Impressively, in a 1 wt% n-butanol aqueous solution at 40 °C, the resultant membrane attained a permeation flux of 1483.3 g·m -2 ·h -1 and a separation factor of 18.1. Compared to the PEBA/PVDF membrane, the total flux was enhanced by 17.1 %, and the separation factor was improved by 46.4 %. Moreover, the embedding MIL-53(Al) variants boosted thermal and mechanical properties of the membrane, endowing it with considerable potential for practical applications.

Enhancing the Fenton-like Catalytic Activity of nFe2O3 by MIL-53(Cu) Support: A Mechanistic Investigation

Yi Ren,Mengqi Shi,Weiming Zhang,Dionysios D. Dionysiou,Junhe Lu,Chao Shan,Yanyang Zhang,Lu Lv,Bingcai Pan

A novel Fenton-like catalyst was synthesized by immobilizing nano-Fe2O3 (nFe2O3) on MIL-53(Cu). The pseudo-first-order rate constant of bisphenol A degradation in the nFe2O3/MIL-53(Cu)/H2O2 system reached 0.0123 min–1, while the values in MIL-53(Cu)/H2O2 and nFe2O3/H2O2 systems were only 0.0026 and 0.0040 min–1, respectively. The characterization of nFe2O3/MIL-53(Cu) reveals that the supreme catalytic activity of this material could be ascribed to iron–copper synergy, smaller size, and better dispersion of nFe2O3 particles. Moreover, a method of trapping Cu(I) by neocuproine was developed, which could shield Cu(I) from interacting with iron and H2O2, and thus allow quantitative differentiation of the contribution to the enhanced catalytic activity by each of the factors. Using this method, 19% of the enhancement was determined to be contributed by synergistic effect, while 24% of the enhancement was due to the smaller size and better dispersion of the nFe2O3 particles on MIL-53(Cu) support. In addition, the performance of nFe2O3/MIL-53(Cu) only dropped 10.7% after five treatment cycles in real wastewater, showing good potential in practical application. We believe this study sheds light on the tailored design of Fenton-like catalysts and elucidates the catalytic mechanisms of supported bimetallic catalysts.

Mechanism for airborne ozone decomposition on X-MIL-53(Fe) (X = H, NH2, NO2)

Jiami Ma,Zhixin Hu,Weihong Guo,Cheng Ni,Pan Li,Bosheng Chen,Songhua Chen,Jinlong Wang,Yanbing Guo

Ground−level ozone (O 3 ) pollution poses a significant threat to both ecosystem sustainability and human health. The catalytic decomposition of O 3 presents as a promising technology to address the issues of O 3 pollution. This study undertook the synthesis of various functionalized metal−organic framework (MOF) catalysts ( i.e., X-MIL-53(Fe) (X = H, NH 2 , NO 3 )) to delve into the influence of ligand functional groups on skeletal structure and catalytic efficacy, particularly focusing on unraveling the mechanism of O 3 catalytic decomposition under humid conditions. NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) catalyst achieved complete O 3 decomposition under ambient temperature and high humidity conditions (RH=75 %), exhibiting a reaction rates (mol·m −2 ·s −1 ) 129 and 10.5 times greater than that of MIL-53(Fe) and NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe). The NH 2 group promotes electron flow within the backbone towards the hydroxyl group (OH) linked to Fe atom. In humid O 3 , H 2 O molecules augment the interaction between O 3 and NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe), and OH is converted to·O 2 − after deprotonation, promoting O 3 decomposition. Additionally, leveraging three−dimensional (3D) printing technology, a monolithic catalyst for O 3 decomposition was prepared for application. This study not only advances understanding of the mechanisms underlying O 3 decomposition but also offers practical solutions for addressing O 3 pollution at humid conditions.

Nature-mimic fabricated polydopamine/MIL-53(Fe): efficient visible-light responsive photocatalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols

Shuangyan Meng,Wei Zeng,Mingming Wang,Litong Niu,Shaoping Hu,Bitao Su,Yaoxia Yang,Zhiwang Yang,Qunji Xue

Polydopamine/MIL-53(Fe) (PDA/MIL-53(Fe)) nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized with PDA (PDA = polydopamine) and MIL-53(Fe) using a nature-mimicking method. The structures, morphologies, optical properties and thermal stabilities of all the synthesized materials were characterized using a series of methods. In particular, the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge significantly increased after the incorporation of PDA into MIL-53(Fe), which resulted in an elevated photocatalytic activity of PDA/MIL-53(Fe) compared with the control groups. The PDA/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite could accelerate the conversion of primary or secondary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with a high specificity by direct hole-involving oxidation under visible-light irradiation and room temperature. The catalysts could be cycled at least three times without a significant decrease in the catalytic activity and this result showed the excellent recyclability and stability of the catalysts.

Fabrication of a MIL-53(Al) Nanocomposite Membrane and Potential Application in Desalination of Dye Solutions

Huimin Ruan,Changmeng Guo,Hongwei Yu,Jiangnan Shen,Congjie Gao,Arcadio Sotto,Bart Van der Bruggen

This study reports the fabrication of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using immersion precipitation phase inversion for promising application in desalination of dye solutions. Aromatic poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) is used as the polymer material, and the metal–organic framework MIL-53(Al) is added to develop integrally skinned asymmetric membranes. Successful dispersion of MIL-53(Al) particles into the membrane-separating layer is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The optimum performance of the membranes is obtained at 0.5 wt % MIL-53(Al) concentration. In particular, the M-0.5 membrane is planned for use in separating dye/salt aqueous mixtures. It is observed that the M-0.5 membrane has a rejection for NaCl and Na2SO4 below 11% and 37%, respectively, in mixed salt/dye solutions. Additionally, the M-0.5 membrane is found to have a rejection rate of 83.9%, 98.3%, and 99.8% for nitroso-R salt, xylenol orange, and ponceau S, respectively, in mixed Na2SO4/dye solutions. The rejection rate for Na2SO4 is lower than that of some commercial nanofiltration membranes (NF90, NF270, and DK). The membrane is promising for dye desalination in industrial-scale applications.

Synergistic photocatalytic degradation of TC-HCl by MIL-53(Fe)/CoWO4 composite and PMS under visible light

Qian Liu,Panpan Xu,Qianqian Zhang,Guangming Han,Ling Li,Limin Zhou

A series of novel MIL-53(Fe)/CoWO 4 composites were synthesized by combining MIL-53(Fe) and CoWO 4 nanoparticles via solvothermal method. The structural characterizations showed that CoWO 4 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of hexagonal bipyramid MIL-53(Fe). Combining XPS and Mott-Schottky plots, a Z-scheme heterojunction was formed between MIL-53(Fe) and CoWO 4 , resulting in a significant improvement in the electron-hole pair separation efficiency. UV–vis diffused reflectance spectra indicated that the optical arrange of MIL-53(Fe)/CoWO 4 composites were expanded to visible light. The photocatalytic degradation experiments under visible light irradiation showed that MIL/CWO-60 synergistically with PMS degraded 90.5 % of TC-HCl within 50 min. The XRD spectra of used and unused composites were identical, indicating good stability in four consecutive cycles. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radicals trapping experiment revealed that active species included O 2− , SO 4 − , h + , OH and 1 O 2 , and mechanism of the synergistic degradation of TC-HCl by MIL-53(Fe)/CoWO 4 composites and PMS was proposed.

Interfacial Engineering Boosting the Activity and Stability of MIL-53(Fe) toward Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Zhuangzhi Sun,Jiawei Lin,Suwei Lu,Yuhang Li,Tingting Qi,Xiaobo Peng,Shijing Liang,Lilong Jiang

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) has emerged as a promising strategy for green ammonia synthesis. However, it suffers unsatisfactory reaction performance owing to the low aqueous solubility of N2 in aqueous solution, the high dissociation energy of N≡N, and the unavoidable competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a MIL-53(Fe)@TiO2 catalyst is designed and synthesized for highly efficient eNRR. Relative to simple MIL-53(Fe), MIL-53(Fe)@TiO2 achieves a 2-fold enhancement in the Faradaic efficiency (FE) with an improved ammonia yield rate by 76.5% at −0.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). After four cycles of electrocatalysis, MIL-53(Fe)@TiO2 can maintain a good catalytic activity, while MIL-53(Fe) exhibits a significant decrease in the NH3 yield rate and FE by 79.8 and 82.3%, respectively. Benefiting from the synergetic effect between TiO2 and MIL-53(Fe) in the composites, Fe3+ ions can be greatly stabilized in MIL-53(Fe) during the eNRR process, which greatly hinders the catalyst deactivation caused by the electrochemical reduction of Fe3+ ions. Further, the charge transfer ability in the interface of composites can be improved, and thus, the eNRR activity is significantly boosted. These findings provide a promising insight into the preparation of efficient composite electrocatalysts.

Immobilized lipase on MIL-53(Al)-AM11 with regulatable hydrophobic surface for flavor ester synthesis

Le Zhong,Yuxiao Feng,Zichen Wang,Tian Tian,Yali Bi,Jiandong Cui

Enzymatic synthesis of flavor esters is crucial for applications in food, beverage, and cosmetics industries. However, the poor activity and stability of free lipase hinder these reaction. Inspired by the concept of lipase interface activation, MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 was modified with alkyl acid anhydrides of varying chain lengths to tailor its hydrophobicity, and Candida Rugosa lipase (CRL) was subsequently immobilized on this surface to achieve efficient interface activation. The resulting CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 exhibited 3.5 times higher activity than the unmodified CRL@MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 . Moreover, CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 enabled one-step purification of crude CRL via selective adsorption. It also showed enhanced storage and thermal stability as well as higher resistance to protease degradation and denaturants than free CRL. CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 retained 75 % of its initial activity after 30 min treatment at 55 °C, whereas the free CRL retained only 41 %. After 11 days of storage, CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 maintained 70 % of its initial activity, in contrast to 36 % for the free lipase. Notably, CRL@MIL-53(Al)-AM11 achieved a 97 % conversion rate in the esterification synthesis of the flavoring substance (butyl butyrate) within 24 h and retained over 40 % conversion after five consecutive cycles. Therefore, this strategy offers a feasible approach for constructing high-performance immobilized lipases for flavor ester synthesis.
