Customization of indium-based MOFs for enhanced adsorptive and photocatalytic of organic pollutants: Morphology involvement on performance and mechanism

Wenliang Zhang,Yan Wang,Timing Fang,Xiao Tang,Zhezheng Ding,Yunhai Han,Ran Guo,Pengfei Qi,Xiaomin Liu

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as photocatalysts are promising candidates for environmental wastewater treatment owing to their tunable crystal structure, well-ordered donor–acceptor interface, and exceptional porosity. However, precise control over size and morphologies of MOFs to enhance adsorptive and photocatalytic performance is still a considerable challenge. Herein, the MIL-68(In)–NH 2 (MN) MOFs with special acicular structure are customized by a facile method, in which the growth of crystal nuclei is inhibited and regulated by pyridine. The formation mechanism of MN with different morphologies and size is introduced, and their photocatalytic activities are systematically explored by degrading model pollutants tetracycline (TC) and dyes under visible light irradiation. Benefiting from its high specific surface area and the exposed large lattice spacing facet, the wool-ball morphology MN (MN-W) with surface acicular nanostructure presents an optimum photocatalytic performance compared to other MN morphologies. The MN-W also exhibits excellent adsorption capacity, remarkable cyclic stability, and good practical organic wastewater treatment capability. The possible photodegradation mechanism and pathways are elucidated, demonstrating that h + is the primary reactive species, followed by •OH and •O 2 – radicals, responsible for the degradation of TC. This work is anticipated to tailoring design and modulate MOF photocatalysts for boosting the photocatalytic performance towards organic effluents remediation.

Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution over the In2O3@Ni2P Heterojunction of an In-Based Metal–Organic Framework

Yi-Shan Ouyang,Yu Jiang,Shuang Ni,Run-Yuan Jiang,Jian Wang,Wen-Bin Wang,Wei Zhang,Qing-Yuan Yang

Although the engineering of visible-light-driven photocatalysts with appropriate bandgap structures is beneficial for generating hydrogen (H2), the construction of heterojunctions and energy band matching are extremely challenging. In this study, In2O3@Ni2P (IO@NP) heterojunctions are attained by annealing MIL-68(In) and combining the resulting material with NP via a simple hydrothermal method. Visible-light photocatalysis experiments validate that the optimized IO@NP heterojunction exhibits a dramatically improved H2 release rate of 2485.5 μmol g–1 h–1 of 92.4 times higher than that of IO. Optical characterization reveals that the doping of IO with an NP component promotes the rapid separation of photo-induced carriers and enables the capture of visible light. Moreover, the interfacial effects of the IO@NP heterojunction and synergistic interaction between IO and NP that arises through their close contact mean that plentiful active centers are available to reactants. Notably, eosin Y (EY) acts as a sacrificial photosensitizer and has a significant effect on the rate of H2 generation under visible light irradiation, which is an aspect that needs further improvement. Overall, this study describes a feasible approach for synthesizing promising IO-based heterojunctions for use in practical photocatalysis.

“French fries”-like luminescent metal organic frameworks for the fluorescence determination of cytochrome c released by apoptotic cells and screening of anticancer drug activity

Xie Ruirui,Liu Yanyan,Yang Peipei,Huang Lan,Zou Xun,Liu Jiamin,Ren Qingfan,Tao Jia,Zhao Peng

A luminescent metal organic framework was prepared by encapsulating Zn–Ag–In–S quantum dots into “French fries”-like MIL-68(In) metal organic frameworks (ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In)). The ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In) had a maximum excitation wavelength at 370 nm and maximum emission wavelength at 620 nm. It was found that the ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In) was efficiently quenched by cytochrome c (Cyt c), which is an important biomarker of early cell apoptosis. The quenching mechanism was ascribed to be an inner filter effect and dynamic quenching of Cyt c towards the ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In), and the enrichment effect of MIL-68(In). Benefiting from the multiple advantages, ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In) was developed as an assay strategy of Cyt c with logarithmic relation between signal quenching and concentration in the range 0.02 to 3.5 μM. The linear equation was (F 0 –F)/F 0  = 0.5043 + 0.2678 × logc Cyt c with a detection limit of 8 nM. Cyt c released by drug induced apoptotic cells was determined by ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In), and this strategy has been utilized for the screening of anticancer drug activity. Schematic representation of the synthesis of ZAISQDs@MIL-68(In) and its application for Cyt c and screening anticancer drug activity

In situ fabrication of MIL-68(In)@ZnIn2S4 heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Mengxi Tan,Chengye Yu,Hua Zeng,Chuanbao Liu,Wenjun Dong,Huimin Meng,Yanjing Su,Lijie Qiao,Lei Gao,Qipeng Lu,Yang Bai

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as a class of semiconductor-like materials, are widely used in photocatalysis. However, the limited visible light absorption and poor charge separation efficiency are the main challenges restricting their photocatalytic performance. Herein, the type II heterojunction MIL-68(In)@ZIS was successfully fabricated by in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) on the surface of a representative MOF, i.e. MIL-68(In). After composition optimization, MIL-68(In)-20@ZIS shows an extraordinary photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of 9.09 mmol g−1 h−1 and good photochemical stability, which far exceeds those of most photocatalysts. The hierarchical loose structure of MIL-68(In)-20@ZIS is conducive to the adsorption of reactants and mass transfer. Meanwhile, a large number of tight 2D contact interfaces significantly reduce the obstruction of charge transfer, paving the way for high-perform photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The experimental results demonstrate that the MIL-68(In)@ZIS heterojunction achieves intensive photoresponse and effective charge separation and transfer benefiting from unique charge transport paths of a type II heterojunction. This study opens an avenue toward MOF-based heterojunctions for solar energy conversion.

Construction of In2S3@NH2-MIL-68(In)@In2S3 Sandwich Homologous Heterojunction for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Qingqing Hou,Xiyi Li,Yunhong Pi,Jing Xiao

Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into fuel and value-added chemicals as a promising method has been applied recently to ease energy- or environment-related crises. Herein, we construct an In2S3@NH2-MIL-68(In)@In2S3 (denoted as SMS(In)) sandwich homologous heterojunction via a controllable in situ metal–organic frameworks (MOF) sulfuration process. The improved photoreduction activity mainly lies in the effective charge transfer and separation through a homogeneous interface, enhanced CO2 adsorption and mass transfer, and plentiful reactive sites. Benefiting from this unique hollow homologous heterojunction, SMS(In)-7 obtains a CO generation rate as high as 11.23 μmol g–1 h–1 with visible-light irradiation, nearly 3 times enhancement over that of pure MOF-derived In2S3. This work provides a novel insight into the utilization of MOF-based platform for an efficient atomically heterojunction design.

Hollow mesoporous In2O3 derived from MIL-68 (In) for dual gas sensing of NO2 and H2

Jianwang He,Hu Meng,Yan Xu,Liang Feng

NO 2 is one of the most important air pollutant gases for the environment and human health. H 2 is seen as the next generation of clean energy to promote sustainable development. However, sensitive detection of NO 2 at room temperature is still a major challenge, and reliable H 2 sensors are also scarce. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are advantageous for detecting gas. Hence, we synthesized the unique hexahedral hollow mesoporous In 2 O 3 (h-In 2 O 3 ) derived from MIL-68 (In). The formation process and properties of h-In 2 O 3 were analyzed. The surface of h-In 2 O 3 is rich in hydroxyl groups , which are active sites for NO 2 adsorption at room temperature. Increasing working temperature up to 160 °C enables effective sensing reaction with H 2 . Based on different temperature-dependent gas sensing mechanisms, the h-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits ultrasensitive response values of 400 towards 100 ppb NO 2 at room temperature (24 °C) and of 17.99 towards 10 ppm H 2 at 160 °C. In addition, the h-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits reliable linear response, low theoretical detection limit of 1.8 ppt and 23 ppb for NO 2 and H 2 , excellent selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The synergistic effect of the unique structure, larger specific surface area , and abundant adsorbed oxygen plus oxygen vacancy contribute to the excellent gas sensing performance of the h-In 2 O 3 sensor. This study provides a promising strategy for the development of bifunctional gas sensors.

A Novel 2-Chloro-4-Nitrophenol Photoelectrochemical Sensor Based on MWCNTs@MIL-68(In) Derivatives and In2O3 Composite Films

Chenxi Wang,Linzi Huang,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

2-Chloro-4-nitrophenol (2C4NP) is a traditional organic pollutant whose toxicity constitutes a significant threat to both human health and environmental safety. Therefore, developing a method for the accurate detection of 2C4NP in natural environments is imperative. Consequently, we develop a photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on MWCNTs@In2S3/In2O3/GCE in this work. During the construction process, it is discovered that the introduction of MWCNTs accelerated the electron transport rate, which improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in In2S3. Meanwhile, the MWCNTs@In2S3/In2O3 composite materials formed by MWCNTs@In2S3 and In2O3 not only exhibit an S-scheme heterojunction but also preserve the intrinsic advantages of MOFs-derived materials. This synergistic structure endows the composite materials with excellent optoelectronic performance and adsorption capability. Thus, the constructed photoelectrochemical sensing platform demonstrates promising potential for detecting 2C4NP, with a linear detection range from 3 nM to 5 μM. However, compared to some existing platforms, its detection range remains relatively narrow, which may represent an area for future improvement.

Engineering interfacial charge transfer in a MIL-68(In)/In2S3 heterojunction for highly efficient visible-light-driven Cr(VI) reduction

Xiaobin Zhou,Xin Wang,Mei Wang,Chenyu Zhou,Yinming Fan,Yinian Zhu,Shengpeng Mo,Yanan Zhang,Lihao Zhang,Yijian Zhong,Zongqiang Zhu

Photocatalytic reduction represents a promising strategy for remediating toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution. MIL-68(In), a typical In-based metal-organic framework, is a potential photocatalyst for this purpose. However, its efficiency is often hampered by the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and a narrow visible-light response. To address these limitations, we fabricated a MIL-68(In)/In 2 S 3 n-n heterojunction by controllably growing In 2 S 3 on the MOF substrate, aiming to achieve highly efficient Cr(VI) reduction. Under optimized reaction conditions (pH = 4, temperature 25 °C, catalyst dosage 0.2 g·L −1 , initial Cr(VI) concentration 20 mg·L −1 ), the optimized MIL-68(In)/In 2 S 3 composite achieved a Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of 94.44 % within 30 min of visible light irradiation, significantly outperforming its individual components while exhibiting excellent stability and recyclability. A series of photoelectrochemical and radical trapping experiments were conducted to reveal the enhanced mechanism of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction. The formed heterojunction interface broadened visible-light absorption and exhibited excellent interfacial charge transfer capability and, driven by a built-in electric field, facilitated the spatial separation of charge carriers. Consequently, photogenerated electrons migrated from MIL-68(In) and accumulate on In 2 S 3 , directly reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Simultaneously, some electrons participated in the generation of superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ), which synergistically contributed to the reduction process. This work provided an effective heterojunction photocatalyst for Cr(VI) wastewater treatment and offered valuable insights for the design of MOF-based photocatalytic systems.

The photocatalytic degradation performance and mechanism of rod-like hollow derivatives from Co-doped MIL-68(In) under visible light

Xiaolan Guo,Xiaoman Li,Yuxin Huang,Yongjun Peng,Tongke Hu,Yazhen Chen,Jianhua Cheng

In this study, we synthesized a convenient and efficient composite photocatalyst, In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 from the pyrolysis of Co-doped MIL-68(In). Structural characterization indicates that the composite material exhibited a rod-like hollow structure, thus increasing the specific surface area. Meanwhile, In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 forms a PN heterojunction, which reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated hole-electron pairs. Moreover, the visible light absorption ability of this material is enhanced and it has good catalytic properties. Under visible light, the removal rate of tetracycline (TC) reaches 94% by the In 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 in 90 min, and the reaction constant is 0.02393 min −1 , which is 6.86 and 5.56 times of the single component In 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 , respectively. As shown by free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, h + and •O 2 − play an important role in degrading TC into small molecule intermediates in the catalytic process.

Zn doped In2O3 microtubes derived from zinc nitrate solution etched MIL-68-In for enhancing NO2 sensing property at room temperature

Yan Jiang,Yuying Xin,Hui Zhao,Xianfa Zhang,Ping Wang,Rui Gao,Yingming Xu,Shan Gao,Xiaoli Cheng,Lihua Huo

The reasonable design and preparation of high-performance sensing materials for detecting NO 2 is of importance to environmental conservation and public health. Herein, porous Zn-doped In 2 O 3 microtubes were fabricated by simple Zn(NO 3 ) 2 solution etching of In-MOF microrods, followed by calcination at 500 ℃ in air. The experiment has confirmed that appropriate amount of Zn introduced into In 2 O 3 can optimize electronic structure, increase the number of oxygen vacancy and efficiently improve NO 2 sensing property. In particular, compared with pristine In 2 O 3 , Zn-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, high response, fast recovery speed (32 s) and lower limit of detection (LOD, 20 ppb) at room temperature. Meanwhile, the Zn-In 2 O 3 sensor also presents outstanding reproducibility, stability and humidity resistance. The excellent gas sensing property is traced to the construction of the hollow and porous structure and the synergistic optimization of Zn doping. This endeavor yields a simple strategy for the design of high-property gas sensing materials.

Visible light activated Zinc-doped MIL-68(In)-derived indium oxide nanotubes for rapid and ultra-sensitive room-temperature NO2 detection

Fanjian Meng,Yongrui Li,Chenshuai Han,Zhaorui Zhang,Xiaohui Yan,Minghui Yang

Highly-sensitive NO 2 gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are promising but often limited by poor sensing-recovery characteristics and high operating temperatures. Herein, we address these challenges by combining Zn doping modification with mild visible light activation, effectively tuning the electronic and chemical properties of MIL-68(In)-derived In 2 O 3 nanotubes (NTs), providing an advanced approach to realize rapid recovery towards sub-ppm NO 2 at room temperature (RT). The optimized 5 at% Zn-doped In 2 O 3 (Zn x In 2-x O 3 (x = 0.10)) NTs achieves an exceptional response of 15,257 toward 10 ppm NO 2 under dark condition and a rapid 4 s recovery under visible light irradiation at RT. Additionally, the sensor exhibits superior NO 2 selectivity, excellent reproducibility and long-term stability over 36 days. The enhanced sensing performance is driven by the mesoporous frameworks which enhance free electrons transfer in the modulated energy-level structure and introduce abundant photo-induced holes via visible light irradiation at the sensing-recovery stage. This work offers new insights into surface chemistry modulation in MOS nanomaterials, advancing the development of cost-effective and low-energy-consumption room-temperature NO 2 sensors.

Fabrication of Pd/In2O3 Nanocatalysts Derived from MIL-68(In) Loaded with Molecular Metalloporphyrin (TCPP(Pd)) Toward CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Zhongjie Cai,Meng Huang,Jiajun Dai,Guowu Zhan,Fu-li Sun,Gui-Lin Zhuang,Yiying Wang,Pan Tian,Bin Chen,Shafqat Ullah,Jiale Huang,Qingbiao Li

Methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation with H2 produced from renewable energy has emerged as a promising method for carbon neutrality. The supported Pd/In2O3 catalyst has attracted great attention due to its superior activity and methanol selectivity, but the formation of the In–Pd bimetallic phase upon over-reduction would lead to quick catalyst deactivation. In this work, we elucidate the reduction behavior of Pd/In2O3 catalysts by using TCPP(Pd)@MIL-68(In) as precursors. During catalyst fabrication, metalloporphyrins (viz., TCPP(Pd)) served as both a capping agent for the growth of MIL-68(In) and a shuttle for transporting the Pd2+, which enhanced the dispersion of Pd0 species on In2O3–x during the calcination and reduction treatments and prevented the formation of In–Pd bimetallic phase by over-reduction. With a low Pd loading of 0.53 wt %, the resultant Pd/In2O3 catalyst exhibited a maximum methanol space–time yield of 81.1 gMeOH h–1 gPd–1 with a CO2 conversion of 8.0% and a methanol selectivity of 81% over 50 h on stream (295 °C, 3.0 MPa, 19,200 mL gcat–1 h–1). In contrast, the comparative Pd/In2O3 catalyst prepared by the impregnation of PdCl2 in MIL-68(In) showed poor activity and stability due to the formation of InPd/In2O3–x surface structures. In addition, we found a strong connection between the reduced degree of In2O3 and the catalytic performance of the supported Pd/In2O3 catalysts by integrating catalyst characterization results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Interestingly, the surface In/O ratio detected by XPS can reflect information about both metal–support interaction and the amount of oxygen vacancy, which is highly related to the catalytic activity. The DFT calculation also shows that the Pd/In2O3 catalyst has excellent thermodynamic selectivity for the CH3OH product. This work provides an alternative synthetic strategy for Pd/In2O3 nanocatalysts and sheds light on the deactivation mechanism of the supported catalysts.
