Kinetics of alkaline fading of malachite green and crystal violet in critical solutions

Zhiyun Chen,Zilin Yang,Weiguo Shen

The reaction kinetics for alkaline fading of malachite green (MG) in the critical binary solution 2-butoxyethanol   +   water and of crystal violet (CV) in the critical microemulsion water/bis(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT)/ n -decane with the molar ratio of water to AOT being 30 have been studied by the three-wavelength UV-spectrophotometry at initial reaction stage and various temperatures. It was found that the reaction rates k obs for both above reactions were well described by the Arrhenius equation in the temperature ranges far away from the critical points. The critical slowing down effects were observed in the near-critical regions and the corresponding critical slowing down exponents were determined to be 0.146   ±   0.014 and 0.035   ±   0.006 for the two reactions, respectively. The former exhibited both the dynamic and thermodynamic critical slowing down effects; while the latter showed no thermodynamic singularity. It was attributed to the particular experimental design in this work that made the dimer/monomer droplet equilibrium in the critical microemulsion system no longer affect the reaction kinetics.

Enhanced decolorization of malachite green by a magnetic graphene oxide-CotA laccase composite

Weichuan Qiao,Hai Liu

In this study, a CotA laccase from Bacillus subtilis cjp3 was successfully immobilized onto magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) nanomaterials via covalent bonding with hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS). The morphology, structure, and properties of the MGO-laccase were then characterized by scanning-electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and a magnetic-property-measurement system (MPMS). The magnetic composite exhibited an extremely high binding capacity of ~145.04   mg/g and maintained maximal relative enzyme activities at 25   °C, pH   7, and a reaction time of 2   h. The pH, thermal, operational, and storage stabilities of MGO-laccase were significantly improved over those of free laccase. Moreover, MGO-laccase exhibited a higher tolerance than that of free laccase in the presence of organic solvents , inhibitors, metal ions, and salts. Furthermore, MGO-laccase showed good decolorization performance of malachite green (MG), with decolorization rates reaching 99% after 5   h of reaction at 30   °C and pH   6. In addition, the maximum saturation magnetization of MGO-laccase was 27.7   emu/g, allowing for rapid magnetic separation. Accordingly, magnetic separation allowed MGO-laccase to maintain 75% of its activity after ten consecutive decolorization cycles.

Determination of malachite green in aquatic products based on magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers

Zheng-zhong Lin,Hong-yuan Zhang,Ai-hong Peng,Yi-dong Lin,Lu Li,Zhi-yong Huang

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were synthesized through precipitation polymerization using malachite green (MG) as template, methacrylic acid as monomer, ethylene dimethacrylate as crosslinker, and Fe 3 O 4 magnetite as magnetic component. MMIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Under the optimum condition, the MMIPs obtained exhibited quick binding kinetics and high affinity to MG in the solution. Scatchard plot analysis revealed that the MMIPs contained only one type of binding site with dissociation constant of 24.0   μg   mL −1 . The selectivity experiment confirmed that the MMIPs exhibited higher selective binding capacity for MG than its structurally related compound (e.g., crystal violet). As a sorbent for the extraction of MG in sample preparation, MMIPs together with the absorbed analytes could easily be separated from the sample matrix with an external magnet. After elution with methanol/acetic acid (9:1, v/v), MG in the eluent was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV detector with recoveries of 94.0–115%. Results indicated that the as-prepared MMIPs are promising materials for MG analysis in aquatic products.

Carbon dots-based fluorescence microspheres for ultrasensitive detection of malachite green in fish samples

Qin Hu,Qiuyan Mao,Yikun Cui,Shiyun Gong,Lixia Xiao,Xiaojuan Gong,Tianzhu Guan,Zhen-quan Yang

This work made the first attempt to construct a florescence assay based on CDs@FMs (carbon dots-based fluorescence microspheres) for ultrasensitively probing malachite green (MG). Through static quenching and inner filter effect (IFE), the 581-nm emission peak of CDs@FMs could be significantly suppressed by MG. Our results demonstrated two good linear fluorescence responses for MG in the concentration scopes of 0.01–0.1 μM and 0.1–10.0 μM, respectively. Strikingly, the detection limits (LODs) achieved were down to picometer (56.7 pM) and nanometer levels (0.57 nM). Furthermore, this method exhibited good consistency with the HPLC results when applied for quantitatively screening MG from fish samples. Our current research highlights a promising application of CDs@FMs for enhanced MG probing in aquatic products with the merits of rapidity, simplicity, high accuracy and stable signal readout.

Extraction and determination of malachite green from aquatic products based on molecularly imprinted polymers

Zhengzhong Lin,Dan Wang,Hongyuan Zhang,Lu Li,Zhiyong Huang,Jianxiong Shen,Yuhui Lin

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were synthesized using malachite green (MG) as template, and methacrylic acid/sodium methacrylate as composite monomers. The equilibrium dissociation constant and apparent maximum adsorption capacity of the MIPs reach 12.2 mg·L−1 and 3.2 mg·g−1, respectively. The MIPs demonstrate excellent recognition ability due to high-affinity sites constructed by the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds between template and composite monomers. The MIPs were successfully employed for the detection of MG residue in aquatic products coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a detection limit of 0.57 μg·kg−1.

Fluorescent β-cyclodextrin-based hydrogel for enhanced adsorption and fluorescence detection of malachite green

Yuting Zhang,Xinmiao Qi,Qiang Ma,Jie Li,Xin Guo,Jianzheng Qiao,Yiqiang Wu

Malachite green (MG), a synthetic dye widely used in industrial applications and aquaculture, poses significant health hazards due to its genotoxic and carcinogenic properties. Addressing these risks requires innovative methods for the efficient MG removal and sensitive detection. In this study, we developed a novel β-cyclodextrin/carbon dots-loaded cellulose nanofibrils/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel (βCCM) for enhanced adsorption and fluorescence detection of MG. The βCCM demonstrated an exceptional maximum adsorption capacity of 1789 mg/g. Furthermore, βCCM exhibited bright orange fluorescence, which was significantly quenched upon exposure to MG through inner filter effect and static quenching. The fluorescence detection platform exhibited high sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.09 μg/L and excellent linearity. Its practical applicability was validated through successful MG removal and detection in real water samples, achieving high recoveries and reproducibility. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the enhanced adsorption performance resulted from the incorporation of MIL-100(Fe) and the formation of a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure, which also stabilized the fluorescent signal and amplified detection sensitivity. This study highlights the effectiveness of βCCM for both MG adsorption and detection, presenting a novel strategy for designing advanced β-cyclodextrin-based hydrogels tailored for water treatment.

Smartphone-assisted fluorescence detection of malachite green using a hydrogel-confined Tb-MOFs sensor

Xiaoxia Mao,YanMei Chen,Caiyu Zhang,Qian Wang,Shaowei Liu,Yingchun Gao,Ye Zhu

Tb-MOFs embedded in agarose hydrogel form a flexible, anti-aggregation film for easy retrieval. • Malachite green quenches fluorescence via energy transfer, enabling visible color change within 5 min. • Integrated with a smartphone RGB colorimeter, the platform achieves 1.73 μM detection limit with reliable recovery. A flexible Tb-MOFs@agarose hydrogel film was developed as a smartphone-assisted fluorescence sensing platform for the detection of malachite green (MG). The Tb-MOFs are spatially confined within a hydrophilic agarose network, and upon MG exposure, the system exhibits a distinct ‘bright-green to dark-green’ fluorescence transition within 5 min at 60 °C (or within approximately 40 min at room temperature) via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Tb 3+ to MG. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model was further developed to enable automated image recognition from smartphone-captured fluorescence images. Under optimized conditions (pH 6.0, 60 °C, 0.03 mg/mL Tb-MOFs), the platform shows a linear detection range of 5–140 μM with a limit of detection of 0.63 mg/L. Recoveries of 75.5–127.6% (RSD < 5.4%) were obtained in crucian carp, shrimp, and lake-water samples, with negligible interference from seven co-existing antibiotics. This simple, low-cost approach offers a practical solution for field screening of prohibited MG residues in aquatic products. Preparation of ZIF-67@Agarose Composite for Efficient Removal of Malachite Green From Wastewater

Qiuping Fu,Jialin Wang,Chunmei Zhang,Lei Zha,Jing Hu,Pan Wu

A composite aerogel of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) and agarose (AG), denoted as ZIF-67@AG, was successfully prepared for efficient removal of malachite green (MG). Comprehensive characterization confirmed the successful formation of the composite: X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns retained the characteristic peaks of ZIF-67, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed uniform dispersion of ZIF-67 within a porous AG network, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the characteristic functional groups of both components, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) verified the presence of constituent elements. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, coexisting ions, and temperature on MG removal. The adsorption equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a calculated maximum adsorption capacity of 1112 mg·g −1 . Kinetic analysis revealed that the pseudo-second-order model provided the best fit, suggesting a chemisorption-dominated process. Thermodynamic studies confirmed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the ZIF-67@AG composite showed good reusability, maintaining a removal efficiency above 79% after six adsorption–desorption cycles. These results demonstrate that ZIF-67@AG is a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of MG from wastewater. Graphical ZIF-67@AG aerogel was fabricated via a physical blending strategy for MG removal. ZIF-67@AG exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1112 mg·g −1 . Moreover, it retained 79.69% removal efficiency after six methanol-regeneration cycles, demonstrating excellent recyclability for sustainable wastewater treatment.

FGAN@PB NP Nanozyme-Based Colorimetric–Photothermal Dual-Mode Immunosensor for Malachite Green Detection

Min-Fu Wu,Jing-Min Li,Sha Li,Min-Hua Wu,Ri-Sheng Chen,Yan-Can Liu,Jian-Nan Liu,Zhen-Lin Xu,Yi-Chao Yang,Jia-Dong Li,Qing-Yi Lei,Si-Min Zhan,Lin Luo

In this study, a colorimetric–photothermal dual-mode immunosensor based on Fe(Ⅲ)–gallic acid composite Prussian blue nanozyme (FGAN@PB NPs) was developed for the highly sensitive detection of malachite green (MG) in aquatic products. This strategy addresses the stability limitations associated with conventional horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In the colorimetric mode, the immunosensor exhibited an IC50of 7.56 ng/mL with a linear detection range of 2.21–25.84 ng/mL. In the photothermal mode, the linear range was 0.262–25.6 ng/mL, with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.31 ng/mL. The results from the two detection modes were mutually corroborative. Moreover, the detection of the proposed immunosensor was strongly correlated with the LC-MS/MS, offering a promising approach for the rapid on-site screening of MG and improving its applicability in complex sample matrices.

Efficient removal of cationic malachite green using co-pyrolyzed corn straw biochar-montmorillonite composites

Xiaodong Yang,Zhiyong Hou,Xuefei Yang,Minghui Li,Yuanxia Guo,Kai Wang,Shuaiqi Luo,Jin Zhao,Pengkai Sun,Qiang Yang,Rui Chen,Yan Yan,Lulu Liu,Lili Wang,Ye Han,Fanming Zeng,Andrew R. Zimmerman,Bin Gao

New efficient and sustainable methods for the removal of malachite green (MG) from environmental media are needed. In this study, corn straw was co-pyrolyzed with montmorillonite under a variety of conditions (400, 500, 600, and 700 °C and 10–40 wt% montmorillonite), without any use of toxic chemicals, to produce a series of biochar-clay composites. Characteristics of the composites that make them promising contaminant sorbents include a uniform lamellar-particle micromorphology, enhanced mesoporous structure and surface area (53.0 m 2  g −1 ), and abundant and diverse oxygen/carbon-containing functional groups (i.e., O-H, C-O, C=C, and C-H). The composite produced at 600 °C and 10 wt% montmorillonite had the highest observed MG removal from aqueous solution (6572.1 mg g −1 , 99.6% removal rate). Adsorption of MG by the sorbent was attributed to multiple sorption mechanisms, including physical interaction, cation exchange, and π-π bonding interactions, and was modulated by intra-particle diffusion. This work highlights the potential of corn straw biochar-montmorillonite composites as a favorable adsorbent for environment remediation and water treatment.

Photocatalyst Co3O4/red phosphorus for efficient degradation of malachite green under visible light irradiation

Jianli Tao,Meng Zhang,Xiang Gao,Hao Zhao,Zhenpeng Ren,Donghui Li,Jiaojiao Li,Ruiqin Zhang,Yonggang Liu,Yunpu Zhai

Co 3 O 4 /red phosphorus (Co 3 O 4 /RP) photocatalysts were synthesized via facile hydrothermal and mechanically grinding approach. The catalysts were characterized via XRD , TEM , XPS , N 2 sorption , photoelectro chemical measurements and UV–vis DRS . The results showed that the Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals were assembled on the surface of the RP. The loading of Co 3 O 4 on RP was beneficial to enhance the light absorption compared with pure RP. Under visible light , 94.5% of malachite green (MG) can be photodegraded within 20 min over 10% Co 3 O 4 /RP composite, while only 17.3% and 59.9% of MG can be photodegraded over pure Co 3 O 4 and RP. The reaction rate constant k obtained over 10% Co 3 O 4 /RP heterojunction (0.1464 min −1 ) is approximately 3.2 times that of pure RP (0.0457 min −1 ), and 15.3 times that of bare Co 3 O 4 (0.0096 min −1 ). The cycle experiments showed that the catalyst had high photocatalytic stability. Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals inhibit the photoelectron-hole pair recombination of red phosphorus semiconductor, and exhibit improved visible light absorption . Consequently, the catalytic performance of Co 3 O 4 /RP has been enhanced under visible light .

A hapten design strategy to enhance the selectivity of monoclonal antibodies against malachite green

Min-Fu Wu,Nuo Xu,Sha Li,Yi-Lan Huang,Min-Hua Wu,Jia-Dong Li,Ri-Sheng Chen,Wen-Ming Xiong,Yong-Jun Li,Hong-Tao Lei,Xin-An Huang,Zhen-Lin Xu

Malachite green (MG), a triphenylmethane dye, is used in the aquaculture industry as a disinfectant and insect repellent due to its potent bactericidal and pesticidal properties. However, its use poses potential environmental and health risks. This study analyzed and designed two haptens using computer simulation. Serum data confirmed the feasibility of introducing an arm at the dimethylamine group. Subsequently, a highly selective monoclonal antibody strain was successfully prepared based on the hapten. After optimizing the working conditions of indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IC-ELISA), the IC50 value was 0.83 ng/mL, with a detection limit (IC10) of 0.08 ng/mL and a linear range of 0.19–3.52 ng/mL. The developed monoclonal antibody exhibited a crossover rate of less than 0.1% with other similar structures and can be used to establish an immunoassay.
