Three-dimensional (3D) carbon nano-materials, e.g. a graphene sponge (GS) are promising candidates for the removal of pollutants and the separation of oil and water. A systematic study on how oils or organic solvents disperse in the porous structures of 3D carbon nano-materials, and the factors affecting their sorption process, would be beneficial for designing a superior sorbent with desirable porous structures. Here, confocal Raman spectroscopic imaging was utilized to explore the absorption and desorption processes of dodecane (a constituent in petroleum products) in 3D porous GS with different pore size. It was found that dodecane predominately locates within the interior pores composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets, which provide storage spaces for the absorbed molecules. The larger pore GS has a higher absorption capacity and faster desorption rate compared to the smaller one, which is due to the higher pore volume and weaker interaction with the absorbed molecules. A possible mechanism was also proposed to explain the role of porous macrostructures on the absorption and desorption properties of GSs.

To improve current cancer treatment efficacy, a method for early and accurate detection is of great importance, especially for cancer biomarkers with a specific theranostic target. Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) are a family of endopeptidases that are highly expressed in various types of cancers and play an important role inmetastasis. To detect and locate over-expressed MMPs in vitro and in vivo, a fluorescent “off–on” nanoswitch (GNP-p-FITC/mPEG) has been developed by engineering the fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled peptide (p-FITC) and thiolated polyethyleneglycol monomethyl ether (HS-mPEG, molecular weight 2000 Da) on the surface of gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The p-FITC contains a MMP preferential cleavage site and HS-mPEG is used to improve the stability and biocompatibility of the nanoswitch in vivo. The nanoswitch has a very low background signal and displays sensitive response to compound enzymes (containing MMP-2, MMP-4, and MMP-9 that may contribute to MMPs activity) either in vitro or in vivo. As a result of using GNPs, the nanoswitch has enhanced cellular internalization with HepG2 cells due to the endocytosis process as well as improved tumor penetration performance due to its small-size-induced enhanced permeability and retention (EPR). Furthermore, the biocompatibility and tumor targeting ability of the nanoswitch are established by its cytotoxicity with HepG2 cells and distributions in normal organs and tumor tissues. The simple preparation process, the complete fluorescence quenching, and the effective fluorescence recovery (about 50-fold intensity) makes the present MMP-responsive nanoswitch an accurate diagnosis probe for mapping MMPs and evaluating the tumor development both in vitro and in vivo.

Human hands can envelop the surface of an object and recognize its shape through touch. However, existing stretchable haptic sensors exhibit limited flexibility and stability to detect pressure during deformation, while also solely achieving recognition of planar objects. Inspired by the structure of skin tissue, an embedded construction-enabled liquid metal-based e-skin composed of a liquid metal microstructured electrode (LM-ME) array is fabricated for curved pressure mapping. The embedded LM-ME-based sensor elements are fabricated by using femtosecond laser-induced micro/nanostructures and water/hydrogel assisted patterning method, which enables high sensitivity (7.42 kPa −1 in the range of 0–0.1 kPa) and high stability through an interlinked support isolation structure for the sensor units. The sensor array with a high interfacial toughness of 1328 J m −2 can maintain pressure sensation under bending and stretching conditions. Additionally, the embedded construction and laser-induced bumps effectively reduce crosstalk from 58 to 7.8% compared to conventional flexible sensors with shared surfaces. The stretchable and mechanically stable sensor arrays possess shape-adaptability that enables pressure mapping on non-flat surfaces, which has great potential for object recognition in robotic skins and human-computer interaction.

Precise intraoperative localization of epileptic foci requires neural electrodes that conform tightly to soft brain tissue while remaining removable without inducing tissue damage. However, existing flexible electrodes typically exhibit either insufficient adhesion, resulting in unstable signal acquisition, or irreversible bonding that risks cortical injury upon removal. Here, a Zn 2 + -regulated, reversibly adhesive flexible cortical electrode based on imidazole-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-IM) is presented. Hydroxyl groups distributed along the polymer backbone provide robust interfacial adhesion to neural tissue and metal electrodes, while terminal imidazole moieties enable reversible coordination with Zn 2 + ions. This coordination mechanism allows the electrode to maintain firm, conformal contact during electrophysiological recording and to detach rapidly and cleanly upon Zn 2 + exposure without leaving residue on the brain surface. The PDMS-IM elastomer exhibits tunable mechanical properties (modulus of 10–200 kPa), high stretchability, and low interfacial impedance, supporting stable cortical interfacing. In vivo epilepsy models demonstrate that Zn 2 + -triggered detachment preserves both electrode integrity and cortical surface morphology while enabling reliable multichannel seizure monitoring. By decoupling strong tissue adhesion from atraumatic removal, this work establishes a controllable adhesive interface for transient neural implants and provides a practical strategy for safe cortical mapping in epilepsy surgery and related neurosurgical applications.

Zinc-based flow batteries are gaining attention as safe, cost-effective, and sustainable energy storage solutions amid global energy transition challenges. However, their practical application is hindered by poor reversibility and dendrite formation of Zn negative electrode, particularly under high state-of-charge conditions. Despite extensive research on Zn side, the relationship between localized temperature distribution and dendrites remains underexplored, primarily due to limited microscopic observation techniques. Here, we present a non-invasive optically detected magnetic resonance with nanodiamond quantum sensors to monitor temperature variations during Zn deposition, achieving a sub-micron spatial resolution ( ~ 300 nm) and a temperature sensitivity of ~2 K/Hz 0.5 . Our findings suggest that spatial temperature non-uniformity may play a critical role in accelerating dendrite growth and potentially leading to more severe short circuits. Simulations revealed that higher substrate thermal conductivity improves Zn deposition uniformity. Herein, we introduced a flowable gallium-indium liquid metal electrode, which disperses localized heat and lowers interfacial temperature gradients, thereby suppressing hotspot-driven dendrite growth and enabling in situ formation of a liquid Zn alloy. The zinc-bromine flow battery with the liquid metal electrode demonstrated enhanced cycling stability over 2400 hours at a high state-of-charge of 90%, achieving a cumulative discharge capacity of 46.2 Ah cm −2 at 40 mA cm −2 .

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been applied in a range of fields for its super high sensitivity which can even reach the single molecule level. But the quantification methods based on SERS still have some challenges such as stability, repeatability, and linearity at low concentrations. Here we propose a new quantification approach by using a total mapping scheme, and then add all the spectra together to obtain a final merged spectrum (a total SERS spectrum). The total SERS spectra were used to perform quantification analysis. The results of this approach show that it can improve the signal stability by at least 50% (RSD) and extend the linear quantification range by one order of magnitude. The proposed total SERS mapping quantification strategy is a promising practical working mode to improve its analytical figures of merit.

To facilitate reliable analysis of inorganic ingredients in mineral Chinese medicine, a validated Raman mapping strategy for assaying aluminum potassium sulfate dodecahydrate (KAl(SO4)2·12H2O) in alumen was reported. In this strategy, the internal standard quantitation and simple pellet method were introduced to minimize the interference from undesirable background. The impact of physical properties (including particle size and compactness) of the as-prepared tablets on Raman signals was also systematically evaluated. Compared with the dramatic signal fluctuation (RSD>25%) observed in random single-point Raman measurement, Raman mapping measurement exhibits significantly higher repeatability (RSD<5%). The entire process can be completed within 30 min. Meanwhile, the spatial visualization distribution of the multiple compounds from the as-prepared tablets was achieved by assigning different colors using Raman mapping with Matlab imaging algorithms. Compared to the titration method commonly used in mineral medicine quantification, the validated Raman mapping strategy for non-destructively analyzing KAl(SO4)2·12H2O greatly simplified the complicated operating steps, and improved the reproducibility of experiment results. This could provide a new window for inorganic sample analysis, particularly in the quantification of mineral medicine.

Addressing antibiotic-resistant bacteria requires the efficient development of antibiotic-free antimicrobial materials. Herein, a high-throughput parallel chromatic-zone screening strategy is developed that enables the simultaneous screening of composition and surface structure, thereby optimizing antimicrobial performance. As an example, a MgCuPdGd alloy library with diverse compositions and nanostructures, consisting of 229 samples with continuous compositional gradients and varied nanostructured morphologies is constructed by integrating magnetron co-sputtering and chemical dealloying. The dealloyed samples exhibit distinct chromatic zones—red, yellow, and green—each associated with unique compositional and microstructural features. Among these regions, the red Cu-rich region demonstrates the most outstanding antibacterial performance, achieving a 95% reduction of viable Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Comprehensive characterization confirms that the superior antimicrobial efficiency originates from the synergistic contribution of the CuPd alloy and the optimized nanostructure. Furthermore, the observed correlation among surface color, composition, morphology, and antibacterial performance highlights the predictive capability of the chromatic-zone screening approach, thereby reducing characterization requirements by 90% and enabling morphology and performance estimation across large material libraries. This work not only offers a rapid and cost-effective strategy for identifying antimicrobial materials but also provides a versatile platform adaptable to the development of functional materials for broader biomedical and environmental applications.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been widely used as a model system for studying the physiological and pharmacological action of small-molecular drugs. Here, a heterozygous diploid S. cerevisiae strain QSS4 was generated to determine whether drugs could induce chromosomal instability by determining the frequency of mitotic recombination. Using the combination of a custom SNP microarray and yeast screening system, the patterns of chromosomal instability induced by drugs were explored at the whole genome level in QSS4. We found that Zeocin (a member of the bleomycin family) treatment increased the rate of genomic alterations, including aneuploidy, loss of heterozygosity (LOH), and chromosomal rearrangement over a hundred-fold. Most recombination events are likely to be initiated by DNA double-stand breaks directly generated by Zeocin. Another remarkable finding is that G4-motifs and low GC regions were significantly underrepresented within the gene conversion tracts of Zeocin-induced LOH events, indicating that certain DNA regions are less preferred Zeocin-binding sites in vivo. This study provides a novel paradigm for evaluating genetic toxicity of small-molecular drugs using yeast models.

A hydrogel strain sensor can successfully transform its deformation into resistance changes, offering novel options for the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI). However, it remains challenging to prepare hydrogel sensors with superior performance (e.g., high conductivity). Here, we produced a conductive hydrogel (named PPC hydrogel) utilizing only three components, PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol)), PAAS (polyacrylate sodium), and CaCl2, through freezing cross-linking and ion chelation. The PPC hydrogel is endowed with high electrical conductivity of approximately 5.2 S/m without the addition of highly conductive materials due to the unique ionic cluster mesh structure, thus enabling an outstanding performance of strain sensing. The PPC hydrogel also maintains electrical conductivity in frozen and underwater conditions and resists swelling in underwater environments, allowing it to be used under water for extended periods of time (more than 15 days). The PPC hydrogel-based strain sensor can be used as a flexible electrode for electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyogram (EMG) examinations and sensitively monitor human activity as well as recognize handwriting. Moreover, we designed a python-based visualization program combined with a PPC hydrogel array to implement pressure-sensing digital image mapping for remote IoT monitoring. As a flexible sensor for biosafety, the PPC hydrogel has potential applications in the field of intelligent sensing, the IoT, and even Internet of Body systems.

Mechanical sensors execute multi-mode response to external force, which are cornerstones for applications in human–machine interactions and smart wearable equipments. Nevertheless, an integrated sensor responding to mechanical stimulation variables and providing the information of the corresponding signals, as velocity, direction, and stress distribution, remains a challenge. Herein, a Nafion@Ag@ZnS/polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) composite sensor is explored, which realizes the description of mechanical action via optics and electronics signals simultaneously. Combined with the mechano-luminescence (ML) originated from ZnS/PDMS and the flexoelectric-like effect of Nafion@Ag, the corresponding explored sensor achieves the detection of magnitude, direction, velocity, mode of mechanical stimulation, and the visualization of the stress distribution. Moreover, the outstanding cyclic stability, linearity response character, and rapid response time are demonstrated. Accordingly, the intelligent recognition and manipulation of a target are realized, which indicate a smarter human–machine interface sensing applied for wearable devices and mechanical arms can be expected.

Paclitaxel (PTX) has poor aqueous solubility and vehicle-related toxicity. Polymeric micelles (PMs) can improve solubility and leverage the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect for tumor targeting. However, a comprehensive understanding of their in vivo fate remains limited, due to the inability to distinguish between encapsulated and released drug. We developed a novel method integrating stable isotope tracing, ultrafiltration, and ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS) to quantify free, released, and total PTX, the polymeric carriers methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) (molecular weight ∼2,000 Da) (mPEG2K) and methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)- block -poly(D,L-lactic acid) (mPEG block MW ∼2000 Da, PLA block MW ∼2,000 Da) (mPEG2K–PLA2K) in rats following administration of PTX injection and paclitaxel-loaded polymeric micelles (PTX-PMs). PTX-PMs significantly altered the pharmacokinetics, reducing the initial dose–normalized initial plasma concentration ( C 0 /Dose) of free PTX to 27.0% of that from the injection. Altered tissue distribution was observed, with high accumulation in reticuloendothelial system (RES) organs and more complete clearance by 48 h. Excretion studies revealed a substantially higher cumulative fecal excretion of PTX after PTX-PMs administration, while the polymer carrier was predominantly excreted renally as mPEG2K. These findings provide critical insights into the in vivo disposition of PTX nanoformulations, supporting the rational design of PMs-based delivery systems.
