UV/persulfate (UV/PS) could effectively degrade algal cells and micro-organic pollutants. This process was firstly applied to remove Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) simultaneously in bench scale. Algal cells can be efficiently removed after 120 min reaction accompanied with far quicker removal of the coexisted TCP, which could be totally removed within 5 min in the UV/PS process. Both SO4•- and HO• were responsible for algal cells and TCP degradation, while SO4•- and HO• separately dominated TCP degradation and algal cells removal. Apart from the role of radicals (SO4•- and HO•) for algal cells and TCP degradation, UV also played a role to some extent. Increased PS dose (0–4.5 mM) or UV intensity (2.71–7.82 mW/cm2) could enhance the performance of the UV/PS process in both TCP and algae removal. Although some intracellular organic matters can be released to the outside of algal cells due to the cell lysis, they can be further degraded by UV/PS process, which was inhibited by the presence of TCP. This study suggested the good potential of the UV/PS process in the simultaneous removal of algal cells and micro-organic pollutants.

Algal blooms in lake and reservoir water lead to water quality problems, including water odors, algal toxins, and disinfection byproducts . A novel dissolved air flotation process that incorporates positively charged bubbles (PosiDAF) can effectively remove algae in lakes and reservoirs. Chitosan, as a modified bubble agent in the PosiDAF process, has attracted extensive attention due to its natural nontoxicity and good flocculation properties. In this paper, three types of amphiphilic chitosan with different lengths of carbon chains were prepared via amphiphilic modification and were used as bubble modifiers to remove microcystis aeruginosa in the PosiDAF process. The effects of algae removal under different dosage of modifiers were compared, and the role of algal organic matter was investigated. Results showed that the water solubility of chitosan was markedly enhanced after amphiphilic modification, while thermal stability were decreased. When using butyl-N-2 hydroxypropyl trimethyl chitosan ammonium chloride (C4-HTCC), the effect of modified air flotation was the best, and the removal ratio of algae was 93.47% when the C4-HTCC dosage was 1.0 mg/L. The presence of AOM enhanced the overall effect of algae removal, and electrostatic attraction was the primary adhesion mechanism of the microbubble-amphiphilic chitosan-algal organic matter-algal cell system. In addition, adsorption bridging and net trapping also have positive effects on algae removal.

The protective mechanism of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secreted by a harmful cyanobacteria against tannins allelochemicals was explored in this study. The binding properties of soluble EPS (SEPS) and bound EPS (BEPS) of Microcystis aeruginosa to tannic acid (TA) were investigated via fluorescence spectroscopy. The results suggested that TA interacted with the proteins in SEPS and BEPS mainly with binding constants of 5.26 and 7.93 L/mol, respectively; TA interacted with the humic acids in SEPS and BEPS mainly with binding constants of 5.12 and 5.24 L/mol, respectively. Thermodynamic experiments confirmed that the binding was mainly controlled by the hydrophobic force. Combined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, it was found that the amine, carbonyl, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups in EPS were the main functional groups contributing to the interaction of TA with EPS. The existence of EPS reduced the toxicity of TA to algal cells, with the 96 h inhibition rate of 40 mg L −1 TA on algal cells decreasing by 48.95%. The results of this study may improve our understanding of the protective mechanism of cyanobacteria against tannins allelochemicals.

The rapid development of agriculture increases the release of butachlor into aquatic environments. As a dominant species causing cyanobacterial blooms, Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) can produce microcystin and poses threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, the impact of butachlor on M. aeruginosa remains unclarified. Therefore, the physiochemical responses of M. aeruginosa to butachlor were investigated, and the relevant underlying molecular mechanism was highlighted. There were no significant changes ( P > 0.05) in the growth and physiology of M. aeruginosa at the low concentrations of butachlor (0–0.1 mg/L), which evidenced a high level of butachlor tolerance in Microcystis aeruginosa . For the high concentrations of butachlor (4–30 mg/L), the inhibition of photosynthetic activity, disruption of cell ultrastructure , and oxidative stress were dominant toxic effects on M. aeruginosa . Additionally, the impaired cellular integrity and lipid peroxidation may be attributed to the substantial elevations of extracellular microcystin-LR concentration. Downregulation of genes associated with photosynthesis, energy metabolism, and oxidative stress was inferred to be responsible for the growth suppression of M. aeruginosa in 30 mg/L butachlor treatment. The upregulation of gene sets involved in nitrogen metabolism may illustrate the specific effort to sustain the steady concentration of intracellular microcystin-LR. These findings dissect the response mechanism of M. aeruginosa to butachlor toxicity and provide valuable reference for the evaluation of potential risk caused by butachlor in aquatic environments.

As freshwater harmful algal blooms continue to rise in frequency and severity, increasing focus is made on the effects of mixed pollutants and the dominant cyanobacterial species Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ). However, few studies have investigated whether M. aeruginosa has a synergistic relationship with two common pollutants, namely, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). In this paper, three FQs and three OPFRs commonly detected in freshwaters were selected to construct a ternary mixture of FQs, a ternary mixture of OPFRs, and a six-component mixture of OPFRs and FQs. The effects of single substance and mixture on the growth of M. aeruginosa were determined at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, and the toxicities of the mixture were evaluated by concentration addition model and independent action model. The results showed that the mixture of FQs and the mixture of OPFRs do not show toxicological interaction. However, partial mixtures of OPFRs and FQs showed antagonism or synergism at different concentrations and times. This indicated that combined toxicities of OPFRs and FQs on M. aeruginosa were mixture ratio dependent, concentration dependent and time dependent. This study improves our understanding of the role of OPFRs and FQs in cyanobacterial outbreaks of Microcystis .

Heterogeneous persulfate activation is an advanced technology for treating harmful algae in drinking water sources, while it remains a significant hurdle in the efficient management of cyanobacterial blooms. In this study, super-dispersed cobalt-doped carbon nitride (2CoCN) was prepared to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for simultaneousMicrocystis aeruginosainhibition and microcystin (MC-LR) degradation. When the initial PMS and 2CoCN concentrations were 0.3 g/L and 0.4 g/L, respectively, the efficiency of algal cell removal reached 97% in 15 min, and the degradation of MC-LR reached 96%. Analyses by SEM, TEM, and EEM spectra revealed that the reaction led to changes in algal cell morphology, damage to the cell membrane and cell wall, and the diffusion of thylakoid membranes and liposomes. The activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and antioxidants (glutathione) in algal cells generally increased, and the content of malondialdehyde increased, indicating severe damage to the cell membrane. Radical capture experiments confirmed that singlet oxygen (1O₂) was the key species destroying algal cells in the 2CoCN/PMS system. The 2CoCN/PMS system was effective in removingM. aeruginosawithin a wide pH range (3–9), and 2CoCN had good reusability. Additionally, three degradation products of MC-LR were identified by LC–MS/MS analysis, and a possible mechanism for the inactivation ofM. aeruginosaand the degradation of MC-LR was proposed. In conclusion, this study pioneered the 2CoCN/PMS system for inhibitingM. aeruginosaand degrading microcystin, aiming to advance water purification and algae removal technology.

The proliferation of cyanobacterial blooms poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and drinking water safety. Traditional control strategies mainly focus on environmental factors and overlook microbial communication networks. This study systematically elucidated the quorum sensing (QS) system in Microcystis aeruginosa and identified a previously unknown QS signaling molecule N-carboxy-C 10 -homoserine lactone (N-carboxy-C 10 -HSL), and its homologous synthase and receptor in the genome for Mae I/MaeR through ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry and genomics methods. These findings provide precise targets for disrupting the QS regulation of M. aeruginosa . As a biocompatible quorum quencher, indole achieved a 95.3 % inhibition rate within 14 days at 0.55 mM. Mechanistically, sub-inhibitory indole (0.07 mM) down-regulates the transcripts of maeI and maeR by 31 % and 38 %, suppressing QS regulation, while higher doses (EC 50 ) induced membrane perturbation and reactive oxygen species (ROS)‑mediated oxidative stress, as evidenced by an 88.6 % decrease in PSII quantum efficiency and a 14.6‑fold increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Molecular docking confirmed its unique competitive inhibition of AHL MaeR binding through hydrogen bonding (-4.8 kcal/mol) with ASP101 (A). Unlike traditional algaecides, this method significantly reduces the production of microcystin-LR and ecological risks by targeted downregulation of maeI/maeR . These findings indicate that quorum quenching is a promising sustainable algal bloom mitigation strategy that can protect aquatic ecosystems by simultaneously controlling algal proliferation and toxin production.

Light-stabilizing additives may contribute to the overall pollution load of microplastics (MPs) and potentially enter the food chain, severely threatening aquatic life and human health. This study investigated the variation between polystyrene (PS) MPs and phthalocyanine blue (CuPC)-containing MPs before and after photoaging, as well as their effects on Microcystis aeruginosa . The presence of PS-MPs increased cell mortality, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the variation in extracellular components, while the presence of CuPC exacerbated these variations. CuPC-containing MPs caused different increasing trends in superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde activities due to electron transfer across the membrane. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the MPs and CuPC affected various cellular processes, with the greatest impact being on cell membranes. Compared with MPs, CuPC negatively affected ribosome and polysaccharide formation. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the cellular response to MPs and their associated light-stabilizer pollution and imply the necessity for mitigating the pollution of both MPs and light-stabilizers.

The presence of butylparaben (BP), a prevalent pharmaceutical and personal care product , in surface waters has raised concerns regarding its impact on aquatic ecosystems . Despite its frequent detection, the toxicity of BP to the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa remains poorly understood. This study investigates the influence of BP on the growth and physiological responses of M. aeruginosa . Results indicate that low concentrations of BP (below 2.5 mg/L) have negligible effects on M. aeruginosa growth, whereas higher concentrations (5 mg/L and 10 mg/L) lead to significant growth inhibition. This inhibition is attributed to the severe disruption of photosynthesis , evidenced by decreased Fv/Fm values and chlorophyll a content. BP exposure also triggers the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in elevated activity of antioxidant enzymes . Excessive ROS generation stimulates the production of microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Furthermore, lipid peroxidation and cell membrane damage indicate that high BP concentrations cause cell membrane rupture , facilitating the release of MC-LR into the environment. Transcriptome analysis reveals that BP disrupts energy metabolic processes, particularly affecting genes associated with photosynthesis , carbon fixation , electron transport , glycolysis, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle . These findings underscore the profound physiological impact of BP on M. aeruginosa and highlight its role in stimulating the production and release of MC-LR, thereby amplifying environmental risks in aquatic systems.

Assessing the response of phycospheric antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to pollutants such as antibiotics and microplastics (MPs) under the background of climate warming is crucial for understanding ARG fate in aquatic ecosystems. In this work, we conducted mesocosm experiments to evaluate how these stressors influence phytoplankton dominance, phycospheric bacteria, and ARG evolution. Results showed that in Microcystis -dominant ecosystem, a single stressor strengthened Microcystis dominance (up to 82.37 % of total abundance), but only warming significantly enhanced phycospheric bacterial metabolic activity and promoted phycospheric ARG proliferation (1.34-fold higher on day 16). The increased propagation of Microcystis symbiotic bacteria (e.g., Roseomonas and Methylobacterium ) and microcystin-degraders (e.g., Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas ) drove the spread of ARGs. Though the single treatment of antibiotics (0.85- and 0.53-fold for days 16 and 30) or MPs (0.72- and 0.20-fold for days 16 and 30) decreased the abundance of ARGs, co-treatment with warming reversed this suppression (e.g., 1.55- and 1.96-fold for WA and MW groups on day 16). The results underscore the necessity of considering the combined warming-pollutant effects in ARG ecological risk assessment in natural waters, particularly under phytoplankton succession scenarios. Such insights are vital for managing antimicrobial resistance in evolving aquatic environments under global change pressures.

Frequent cyanobacterial blooms pose a serious threat to the aquatic ecosystem and human health, so developing an efficient algae removal method is a long-term goal for bloom management. Current technologies for algal bloom control need urgent improvement in terms of algicide recovery, eco-friendliness and cost. Here we propose a contact-electro-catalytic method, using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film as a reusable catalyst. This contact-electro-catalytic approach involves the generation of reactive oxygen species (e.g., O 2 • – , HO•, 1 O 2 and H 2 O 2 ) through water-PTFE contact electrification under the low-frequency ultrasonic waves, facilitating the inactivation of algae. The removal rate of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) exposured to the water-PTFE contact-electro-catalytic system is almost five times greater than that of ultrasound alone after 5 h. A mechanistic investigation revealed that the contact-electro-catalytic system damaged the photosynthetic activity, antioxidant system and membrane integrity of the cells. Additionally, LC-MS metabolomic analysis indicated that this system caused substantial significant disruptions in the TCA cycle, amino acid metabolism, purine metabolism and phospholipid metabolism. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy suggested contact-electro-catalysis could further availably degrade the organic matter. We anticipate that this method can provide an eco-friendly, highly efficient and economic approach for effective control of harmful algal blooms.

Glyphosate is a commonly used herbicide known for its high performance in killing certain plants and grasses; however, its use is regulated due to its harmful effects on the aquatic environment. The present study investigated and compared the toxic mechanisms of glyphosate on Microcystis aeruginosa (a toxin-producing cyanobacterium) under 2 conditions: 0‰ saline media (experiment I) and 2.5‰ saline media (experiment II). The results indicated that an appropriate concentration of glyphosate provided a phosphate source for M. aeruginosa , resulting in an increased specific growth rate in both experimental groups compared with the controls. Glyphosate-enhanced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity increased by up to 1.37-fold in experiment I and 1.68-fold in experiment II. Moreover, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) decreased at glyphosate concentrations below 1.2 mg L –1 but increased at concentrations greater than 1.2 mg L –1 in experiment I, whereas SOD and CAT activities decreased in experiment II and declined by 64 and 49% in the 30 mg L −1 treatments. Furthermore, the transcript abundances of the pyruvate carboxylase ( pcB ), microcystin synthetase B ( mcyB ) , and paired-like homeobox ( phoX ) genes were up-regulated by up to 6.92-, 3.63-, and 2.27-fold in experiment I and 6.74-, 6.55-, and 4.86-fold in experiment II after 96 h of incubation. The addition of glyphosate stimulated the production of dissolved organic matter including tryptophan-like substances, fulvic acid-like substances, (marine) humic acid-like substances, and microcystin–leucine-arginine in the culture. In conclusion, glyphosate stimulates the proliferation of M. aeruginosa and enhances the release of dissolved organic matter in saltwater ecosystems.
