Electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion using Mo-S-Fe3O4 nanoplates on foam iron electrode: Synergistic effects of Lewis-acid and Lewis-base sites

Maonan Ran,Guan Zhang

The NO 3 − electroreduction process presents a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch method by offering dual benefits: removal of nitrates from wastewater coupled with efficient NH 3 production. Herein, Mo and S doped Fe 3 O 4 nanoplates grown on foam Fe (Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF) with electron-rich Mo δ+ state was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal approach. Notably, Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF electrode achieved a nearly fourfold enhancement in ammonium yield compared to foam Fe electrode, while also enhancing the NH 3 Faradaic efficiency. At − 1.3 V vs . Ag/AgCl in a K 2 SO 4  + KNO 3 solution, the Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF electrode attained a NH 3 Faradaic efficiency of 91.3 %. Furthermore, performance was observed to improve with increasing solution pH levels as the reaction proceeded. From both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives, our findings demonstrate that high NH 3 production activity is characteristic of Mo-S-Fe 3 O 4 @FF—indicating significant enhancements in conversion rates from NO 3 − →NO 2 − →NH 3 . Theoretical calculation, in conjunction with experimental analyses, reveal that the co-modification of Fe 3 O 4 with Mo and S enhances electron transfer capacity during NO 3 − RR. This modification forms Lewis-acid (Fe-Mo) pairs that increase nitrate adsorption energy alongside Lewis-base (S-O) sites that attract protons, thereby improving overall NO 3 − RR activity. This report elucidates the synergistic effects of Lewis-acid and Lewis-base sites on optimizing catalytic performance for NO 3 − RR using foam Fe-based electrodes.

Water-flow-induced rapid directional electron transfer via Mo-S-Fe bridge bonds for enhanced Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycling in Fenton-like system

Lu Zeng,Xuexia Guo,Jiahao Sun,Wenbin Huang,Huinan Zhao,Lingling Hu,Shuanghong Tian,Chun He

In Fenton-like processes, achieving rapid and efficient redox cycling of metal active centers remains a challenge. This study presents an innovative strategy that harnesses the mechanical energy of water flow to drive the redox cycling of metal active centers. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 heterojunction with interfacial Mo-S-Fe bridge bonds was constructed via a one-step hydrothermal method. Under the stimulation induced by water-flow mechanical, the piezoelectric effect of MoS 2 generates charge carriers, which are rapidly directed to Fe active sites through the Mo-S-Fe bonds. This process significantly accelerates the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and enhances H 2 O 2 activation, achieving 93.8% removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 60 min under water flow stimulation. The composite exhibits robust performance across a broad pH range (3.0-10.7) and in the presence of humic acid (HA) and coexisting anions, demonstrating its strong environmental adaptability. Spectroscopic evidence confirmed the formation of Mo-S-Fe bonds at the heterojunction interface. Mechanistic studies further revealed that the structure improves charge separation, promotes rapid electron transfer from MoS 2 to Fe sites, and strengthens H 2 O 2 adsorption, thereby synergistically boosting reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generation and the overall catalytic efficiency. This study proposes an innovative strategy that exploits mechanical forces generated by water flow to drive rapid redox cycling of active metal centers in Fenton-like reactions.

Synergistic hydrazine-driven regulation and Mo/S co-doping to endow BiOBr with heterovalent molybdenum states and abundant oxygen vacancy defects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Zhengjie Su,Binghong Wu,Dong-Hau Kuo,Longyan Chen,Pengkun Zhang,Baoqian Yang,Xinru Wu,Dongfang Lu,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

Herein, we demonstrate a Mo/S co-doped BiOBr-based bimetal bismuth sulfur-oxybromide (Mo/S-BiOBr) catalyst with heterovalent molybdenum states and abundant oxygen vacancy defects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHER) via a facile method. Mo/S co-doping adjusts the energy band structure of BiOBr and expands its visible light absorption. Hydrazine regulates the molybdenum with heterovalent states while endowing Mo/S-BiOBr with oxygen vacancy defects to balance the valence-charge deviations from electrical neutrality induced by Mo6+ → Mo4+. These oxygen-vacancy defects act as active sites for capturing water molecules and activating the H–O–H bond to produce protons for hydrogen generation. The heterovalent Mo6+/Mo4+ states act as photogenerated electron hosts to hop fast between Mo6+ and Mo4+, facilitating efficient electron transfer for the PHER. The hybridization between S 3p and O 2p orbitals improves the stability of continuous PHER. The hydrazine-regulated Mo/S-BiOBr-3 with an optimal n(Mo4+)/n(Mo4+ + Mo6+) ratio and abundant oxygen vacancy defects exhibit an excellent PHER activity of 710.5 μmol h−1 at a catalyst weight of 50 mg and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 13.9% at 420 nm. After six recycles, the H2 yield of Mo/S-BiOBr-3 decreased by only about 3.5%, indicating its good stability and durability. This work provides a practical approach to using bismuth-based oxyhalides in the PHER.

B and N Codoped Cellulose-Supported Ag-/Bi-Doped Mo(S,O)3 Trimetallic Sulfo-Oxide Catalyst for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Reaction and 4-Nitrophenol Reduction

Adugna Boke Abdeta,Feyisa Wedajo,Qinhan Wu,Dong-Hau Kuo,Ping Li,Hanya Zhang,Ting Huang,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

Cellulose plays a significant role in designing efficient and stable cellulose-based metallic catalysts, owing to its surface functionalities. Its hydroxyl groups are used as anchor sites for the nucleation and growth of metallic nanoparticles and, as a result, improve the stability and catalytic activity. Meanwhile, cellulose is also amenable to surface modifications to be more suitable for incorporating and stabilizing metallic nanoparticles. Herein, the Ag-/Bi-doped Mo(S,O)3 trimetallic sulfo-oxide anchored on B and N codoped cellulose (B–N–C) synthesized by a facile approach showed excellent stability and catalytic activity for PHER at 573.28 μmol/h H2 with 25 mg of catalyst under visible light, and 92.3% of the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction was achieved within 135 min by in situ-generated protons. In addition to B and N codoping, our use of the calcination method for B–N–C preparation further increases the structural disorders and defects, which act as anchoring sites for Ag-/Bi-doped Mo(S,O)3 nanoparticles. The Ag-/Bi-doped Mo(S,O)3@B–N–C surface active site also stimulates H2O molecule adsorption and activation kinetics and reduces the photogenerated charge carrier’s recombination rate. The Mo4+ → Mo6+ electron hopping transport and the O 2p and Bi 6s orbital overlap facilitate the fast electron transfer by enhancing the electron’s lifetime and photoinduced charge carrier mobility, respectively. In addition to acting as a support, B–N–C provides a highly conductive network that enhances charge transport, and the relocated electron in B–N–C activates the H2O molecule, which enables Ag-/Bi-doped Mo(S,O)3@B–N–C to have appreciable PHER performance.

Facile Bioself-Assembled Crystals in Plants Promote Photosynthesis and Salt Stress Resistance

Xue Chi,Xiaokang Li,Xuan Hou,Shuqing Guo,Xiangang Hu

Salty soil is a global problem that has adverse effects on plants. We demonstrate that bioself-assembled molybdenum–sulfur (Mo–S) crystals formed by the foliar application of MoCl5 and cysteine augment the photosynthesis of plants treated with 200 mM salt for 7 days by promoting Ca2+ signal transduction and free radical scavenging. Reductions in glutathione and phytochelatins were attributed to the biosynthesized Mo–S crystals. Plants embedded with the Mo–S crystals and exposed to salty soil exhibited carbon assimilation rates, photosynthesis rates (Fv/Fm), and electron transport rates (ETRs) that were increased by 40%, 63–173%, and 50–78%, respectively, compared with those of plants without Mo–S crystals. Increased compatible osmolyte levels and decreased levels of oxidative damage, stomatal conductance (0.63–0.42 mmol m2 s–1), and transpiration (22.9–15.3 mmol m2 s–1), free radical scavenging, and calcium-dependent protein kinase, and Ca2+ signaling pathway activation were evidenced by transcriptomics and metabolomics. The bioself-assembled crystals originating from ions provide a method for protecting plant development under adverse conditions.
