Rich Heterointerfaces Enabling Rapid Polysulfides Conversion and Regulated Li2S Deposition for High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Jin-Lin Yang,Da-Qian Cai,Xiao-Ge Hao,Ling Huang,Qiaowei Lin,Xiang-Tian Zeng,Shi-Xi Zhao,Wei Lv

The practical uses of lithium–sulfur batteries are greatly restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), leading to low sulfur utilization and poor cyclic stability. Using the heterostructure catalysts is an effective way to solve the above problems, but how to further enhance the conversion efficiency and avoid the surface passivation by the insulative Li2S has not been well investigated. Herein, a heterostructure catalyst with rich heterointerfaces was prepared by modifying Mo2N microbelt with SnO2 nanodots. The formed rich interfaces with high accessibility act as the profitable nucleation sites guiding the Li2S 3D growth, which avoids the catalyst surface passivation and facilitates the LiPS conversion. The introduction of SnO2 nanodots also enhances the LiPS adsorption. Thus, the assembled battery with the above catalyst as the cathode additive shows a high capacity of 738.3 mAh g–1 after 550 cycles at 0.5 C with an ultralow capacity decay of 0.025% per cycle. Even with high sulfur loading of 9.0 mg cm–2, good cyclic stability is also achieved at 0.5 C with a low E/S ratio of 5 μL mgs–1. This work shows an effective way to enhance the LiPS conversion kinetics and guide Li2S deposition in Li–S batteries.

Boosting urea-assisted water splitting by constructing flower-like Co5.47N@Mo2N heterostructure

Fu Chen,Jinxuan Lv,Di Gui,Longlong Liu,Muhammad Humayun,Huaming Zhang,Mohamed Bououdina,Mohammad Reza Naimi Jamal,Yanwei Wang,Chundong Wang

Synthesizing a non-noble metal based, cost-effective electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is vital for urea-assisted water splitting to generate green hydrogen. In this work, a novel Co 5.47 N@Mo 2 N heterogeneous interface electrocatalyst is constructed via a facile hydrothermal method followed by a nitridation process. Co 5.47 N@Mo 2 N induces self-driven charge transfer at the interface, facilitates the electron transfer during the catalytic reaction. The prepared Co 5.47 N@Mo 2 N exhibits excellent HER (15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and UOR (1.332 V at 10 mA cm −2 ) performance in alkaline electrolyte. Moreover, the urea-assisted water electrolysis driven by Co 5.47 N@Mo 2 N only requires a low cell voltage of 1.35 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than that required in water electrolysis (1.536 V). Overall, this work demonstrates a general strategy for engineering efficient and durable electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production through interfacial electronic modulation.

Electron Beam-Induced defects in Mo2N thin films for surface-enhanced Raman Scattering

Xin Xie,Yunpeng Cao,Jia He,Hongwen Cao,Zhijun Wang,Sen Sun,Jiayi Liu,Guo Pu,Rui Zhong,Yihan Wang,Kun Zhang

The development of cost-effective and high-performance surface enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate materials has been desired in recent years. Electron beam irradiation is a universal adaptable and efficient technology that can alter the optical and electrical properties of materials by introducing molecular and electronic defects. In this work, planar molybdenum nitride (Mo 2 N) substrates for SERS were synthesized by room-temperature magnetron sputtering. Electron beam irradiation was used to introduce nitrogen-vacancy defects in Mo 2 N thin films to modify the surface topographic properties, energy band structure, and density of states of Mo 2 N films, which improved light-material interaction, light-trapping ability, and charge-transfer efficiency, and resulted in significantly enhanced SERS performance of Mo 2 N films. The Mo 2 N-20 kGy films showed Raman enhancement factor of 1.18 × 10 7 and a detection limit as low as 10 − 9 M. Through the combination of the photoinduced charge transfer (PICT) mechanism and localized surface plasmon resonance effects (LSPR), the irradiated Mo 2 N films had more significant SERS characteristics than that of pristine Mo 2 N films with only the PICT mechanism. This study provides an effective theoretical and practical foundation for the development of sensitive SERS substrates free of precious metals.

Carbon dots-induced carbon-coated Ni and Mo2N nanosheets for efficient hydrogen production

Fan Liu,Yang Tang,Jiaming Zhao,Yu Bai,Jiucun Chen,Liangliang Tian,Syed Shoaib Ahmad Shah,Shu-juan Bao

The insufficient intrinsic activity and electrical conductivity of transition metal-based catalysts still inhibits their practical application. In this work, carbon-coated nano-Ni-armed Mo 2 N nanosheets (Ni@C-Mo 2 N) assembled on Ni Foam (NF) by using CDs-NH 2 as reaction inducing and welding reagent. In-depth experiments reveal that the functional groups of (CDs) play a decisive role in regulating the phase composition and hierarchical structure of the final hybrid material. As electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the optimized hierarchical Ni@C-Mo 2 N/NF achieved a very low overpotential of 38 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and outstanding stability of over 60 h, which should from the synergistic interfacial effect among the Ni, Mo 2 N and graphitic carbon optimized the electronic structure of catalyst with enhanced active sites, and improved electrical conductivity. This work provides novel insights for constructing more hierarchical multicomponent materials with the help of variable functional groups of CDs for further electrochemical applications.

Heterojunction Mo-based binary and ternary nitride catalysts with Pt-like activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Xueling Wang,Xuming Zhang,Yifan Xu,Hao Song,Xingrui Min,Zihuan Tang,Chaoran Pi,Jianping Li,Biao Gao,Yang Zheng,Xiang Peng,Paul K. Chu,Kaifu Huo

The development of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with Pt-like catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance to green hydrogen production . Herein, a novel strategy is described to construct dual-phase nitride nanobelts composed of Mo 2 N and Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N by nitridation of Ni 2+ intercalated layered MoO 3 nanobelts (NBs). The Mo 2 N/Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N catalyst exhibits superior stability and a low overpotential of 26 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 31 mV dec −1 in both the alkaline electrolyte and simulated seawater, which is comparable to or better than that of the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. The excellent alkaline HER characteristics is attributed to the Mo 2 N/Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N heterostructure with adjustable content and robust interfaces and without metal Ni segregation and structure collapse during nitridation. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments reveal that the Mo 2 N/Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N interface with strong electronic interactions optimizes H adsorption/desorption yielding moderately weak bonding metal sites with positive ΔG H* as the catalytic centers, thereby accelerating the HER kinetics and boosting the HER activity. The results reveal a simple strategy for the preparation of heterostructured nitride-based catalysts with Pt-like activity for hydrogen evolution.

Efficient Alkaline Freshwater/Seawater Hydrogen Production via Heterogeneous N-Doped FeMoO4/Mo2N Rod-Shaped Electrocatalysts

Yanxiang He,Meilian Tu,Weijiang Gan,Zhixiao Zhu,Muhammad Mushtaq,Mohammad Al-Mamun,Jianqiu Deng,Hao Yang,Zhongmin Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Graphical A high-performance heterogeneous N-doped FeMoO 4 -Mo 2 N electrocatalyst was synthesized and applied as HER electrocatalyst in alkaline freshwater and alkaline seawater. Benefiting from the individual properties of both N-doped FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N, the optimized FeMoO 4 -Mo 2 N electrocatalyst requires low overpotentials of 23 and 29 mV to afford 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH freshwater and seawater electrolytes, respectively. Durable and efficient Fe-based electrocatalysts in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis is highly desirable but persists a significant challenge. Herein, we report a durable and robust heterogenous nitrogen-doped FeMoO 4 /Mo 2 N rod-shaped catalyst on nickel foam (denoted NF@FMO/MN) affording hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) low overpotentials of 23/29 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 112/159 mV@100 mA cm −2 in both alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, respectively. These results are significantly superior to the pristine FeMoO 4 catalyst. Theoretical calculations consistently reveals that the combination of N-FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N effectively reduces water activation energy barrier, modulates the sluggish water-dissociation kinetics and accelerates the hydrogen adsorption process for efficient HER. The enhanced HER performance of the as-designed NF@FMO/MN catalyst is attributed to the in situ hetero-interfacial engineering between N-doped FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N. This present work nurtures the progress of FeMo-based electrocatalysts in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis.

A “MOFs plus MOFs” strategy toward Co–Mo2N tubes for efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting

Xia Shi,Aiping Wu,Haijing Yan,Lin Zhang,Chungui Tian,Lei Wang,Honggang Fu

The rational combination of early-transition metal nitrides (ETMNs) with late-transition metals (LTMs) is a promising method for the design of highly efficient catalysts. Herein, we report the design of Co–Mo2N tubes based on a “MOFs plus MOFs” strategy for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting in 1 M KOH. The 1-D Mo-MOFs (Mo source) were prepared in large quantities by the reaction of imidazole with MoO3. ZIF-67 (Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67) (Co source) was then grown on the 1-D Mo-MOFs (Mo-based metal–organic frameworks) to obtain ZIF-67/Mo-MOFs by a solution-phase assembly method. The effective combination is due to the similarity of the ligands in the two MOFs. After nitriding, the ZIF-67 was converted into Co metal, and Mo-MOFs were converted into hollow Mo2N, thus giving a hollow Co–Mo2N hybrid with a Co outer layer on the Mo2N inner core. The ratio of Co and Mo in Co–Mo2N can be easily tuned to give optimized catalysts. The tests indicated that the combination of Co and Mo2N can significantly boost the HER performance of materials. At the current density of 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential (η10) on Co–Mo2N was only 76 mV, which is much lower than 296 mV for Mo2N derived from Mo-MOFs and 180 mV for Co–carbon from ZIF-67. The hybrid has also shown improved OER activity in comparison with Mo2N and Co; therefore, the Co–Mo2N can be used as both anode and cathode for an overall water-splitting cell with η10 of 1.576 V. The improved HER activity can be ascribed to the intimate contact between Co and Mo2N for optimized adsorption on reagents, the tube-like structure for easy mass transfer and the good conductivity of Mo2N, which is favourable for transmitting charge.

In-plane heterostructured MoN/Mo2N nanosheets as high-efficiency electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Luo Xiuen,Song Hao,Ren Yulei,Zhang Xuming,Huo Kaifu,Chu Paul K.

Economical and efficient electrocatalysts are crucial to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting to produce hydrogen. Heterostructured electrocatalysts generally exhibit enhanced HER catalytic activity due to the strong electron coupling effects and synergistic optimization of hydrogen adsorption–desorption. Herein, in-plane heterostructured MoN/Mo 2 N nanosheets are fabricated as high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts in the alkaline medium from bulk MoS 2 by molten salt-assisted synthesis. Density-functional theory calculations and experiments show that the in-plane heterostructured MoN/Mo 2 N nanosheets facilitate interfacial electron redistribution from Mo 2 N to MoN, giving rise to more negative H 2 O adsorption energy and optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* = −0.017 eV). Consequently, a low overpotential of 126 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 69.5 mV dec −1 are achieved in the 1M KOH electrolyte, demonstrating excellent HER characteristics. Moreover, the overpotential shows negligible change after operating at 50 mA cm −2 for 12 h, confirming the excellent stability. The results reveal a novel and effective strategy to design highly efficient 2D in-plane heterostructured HER electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Specific detection against diazinon by using Schottky junction driven photoelectrochemical aptasensor

Wenhao Zhang,Zhichong Qi,Pengcheng Yan,Ruya Ma,Erjin Zhang,Song Zhang,Keqiang Xu,Li Xu,Henan Li

As a widely used insecticide, diazinon (DIA) is easily hydrolyzed into highly toxic tetraethyl thiophosphate in water, posing significant long-term risks to both aquatic ecosystems and public health. A sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was developed by integrating Mo 2 N nanoparticles with g-C 3 N 4 (Mo 2 N/g-C 3 N 4 ) to function as an electron acceptor for DIA detection. The combination of high conductivity and wide spectral response in Mo 2 N enables enhanced photogenerated charge collection. Driven by an internal electric field (IEF), recombination with g-C 3 N 4 can form Schottky junctions, promote directional transfer of electrons, and substantially inhibit electron-hole pair recombination. Thus, g-C 3 N 4 exhibited significantly boosted photocurrent under visible light. Through π-π conjugation effect, an aptamer specifically recognizing DIA was introduced at the electrode interface, establishing the PEC sensing interface. The PEC aptasensor constructed based on this achieves highly sensitive and specific detection of DIA. The sensor showed a broad linear range (5 ×10 −3 -1 ×10 3 pM) and an ultra-low detection limit (1.67 ×10 −3 pM) for DIA. Moreover, it exhibited remarkable accuracy, selectivity, and applicability when applied to real water samples. This work extends the application of Schottky junctions to the sensitive detection of pesticide residues and achieves effective amplification of sensing signals, providing profound insights for constructing excellent PEC aptasensors.

Unraveling the role of MoP/Mo2N heterojunctions in enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of CdS

Yonggang Lei,Yongchun Tong,Qingyun Wang,Yuqi Han,Xiaojuan Feng,Zhen Li,Shoubo Li,Kim Hoong Ng

A well-engineered heterojunction cocatalysts play a pivotal role in enabling efficient H 2 evolution over semiconductor materials. Herein, an effective cocatalyst derived from MoP/Mo 2 N heterostructure was proposed and incorporated to CdS for a drastically enhanced H 2 production from water under visible light irradiation. By optimizing catalytic formulation, the best-performing CdS@MoP/Mo 2 N(3 wt%) demonstrates a remarkable H 2 production rate of 10653 μmol h⁻¹g⁻¹ , representing an 18-fold enhancement compared to bare CdS. This remarkably high activity outperforms CdS enhanced by conventional noble metal cocatalysts (e.g., Ag, Au, Pt) and MoS x -based materials, underscoring the outstanding cocatalytic effect promised by MoP/Mo 2 N. In parallel, the optimized photocatalyst also achieved a remarkable stability for H 2 production over 9 consecutive cycles with a total irradiation time of 45 h, alongside a noticeably high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 13.5 % upon irradiated by 420 nm-light. According to analysis, these enhanced performances are ascribed to the promoted interfacial charge transfer kinetics and significantly reduced hydrogen evolution overpotential of CdS@MoP/Mo 2 N(3 wt%), both of which contribute to the superior catalytic activity. Theoretical investigation also suggested a much-facilitated electron shuttling and proton desorption with MoP/Mo 2 N attached to CdS photocatalyst. Overall, this work demonstrates that our developed MoP/Mo 2 N heterostructure cocatalysts can effectively serve as alternatives to noble metals(Ag, Au, Pt) in solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production.

MoS2 Nanosheets Functionalized Multichannel Hollow Mo2N/Carbon Nanofibers as a Robust Bifunctional Catalyst for Water Electrolysis

Dengyu Xie,Guang Yang,Deshuang Yu,Yanan Hao,Silin Han,Yafei Cheng,Feng Hu,Linlin Li,Huaixin Wei,Changchun Ji,Shengjie Peng

Herein, a heterogeneous system composed of few-layered MoS2 nanosheets functionalized multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers containing Mo2N (Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs) was successfully developed for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). The obtained Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs manifests superior performance with improved durableness for electrocatalysis. Independently, at 10 mA cm–2, the optimal Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs achieves overpotentials (η10) of 131 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER. The intimate interaction between the few-layered MoS2 nanosheets array and 1D multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers Mo2N (Mo2N/Carbon MCNFs) advances better exposure of dynamic heterointerfaces, improves the conductivity of electron transfer, and enriches active sites with efficient mass transport. When employed to drive the water electrolysis, Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs also demonstrates a modest overall potential of merely 1.63 V to hit 10 mA cm–2. This study will provide a well-designed structure and development for functional materials in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Crystalline-amorphous Cu0.81Ni0.19@CoN/Mo2N heterostructure nanosheets for carbon-free flexible Zn-air batteries-driven water electrolysis

Jing Qu,Zhongmin Wang,Zhixiao Zhu,Zeba Khanam,Weijiang Gan,Sakariyau Babatunde Abdulkadir,Selvam Mathi,Jianqiu Deng,Feng Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Designing carbon-free electrocatalysts that can efficiently drive hydrogen evolution (HER), oxygen evolution (OER), and zinc-air battery (ZAB) reactions in alkaline media remains difficult because of the different kinetic requirements of each process. Herein, we demonstrates a carbon-free crystalline-amorphous (C-A) Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 @CoN/Mo 2 N heterostructured nanosheets synthesized through a single-step annealing method that simultaneously forms a crystalline alloy core and an amorphous nitride shell. This direct route eliminates carbon supports and avoids multi-stage alloying or nitridation, resulting in tightly coupled C–A interfaces that accelerate charge transfer and stabilize active sites. The catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 43 mV for HER and 297 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , enabling an overall water splitting (OWS) low voltage of 1.56 V. It also maintains excellent durability under harsh electrochemical conditions owing to the absence of carbon, mitigating agglomeration and degradation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /CoN optimizes hydrogen adsorption, while the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /Mo 2 N promotes oxygen intermediate formation. Integrated into a flexible ZAB, the catalyst exhibits a high specific capacity of 811.6 mAh g −1 , a small voltage gap of 1.15 V at 50 mA cm −2 , and 150 h of stable cycling. A self-powered system coupling this flexible ZAB-OWS system further demonstrates the practical viability of this one-step-engineered C–A heterostructure for sustainable energy applications.
