Tungsten-decorated MoP nanobelts for boosted hydrogen production

Dezhi Wang,Yao Lu,Kangyan Lv,Zhuangzhi Wu

To further improve the electrochemical catalytic performance of MoP for hydrogen generation, a tungsten decoration strategy is proposed in this work, and the effect of preparation temperature was also investigated. It is found that the decoration of W can significantly enhance the electron transfer ability and increase the amount of active sites, and the optimized catalyst can be obtained at 700 °C over the Mo-W-P-700 catalyst, which exhibits the best catalytic performance with a small Tafel slope of 53 mV dec-1. This decoration strategy can be widely applied in other transition metal compounds to achieve further performance improvements.

Mn-doped porous interconnected MoP nanosheets for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Zongyun Mu,Ting Guo,Hao Fei,Yaoqing Mao,Zhuangzhi Wu,Dezhi Wang

Rational design of robust and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for the development of energy conversion technologies. Molybdenum phosphide (MoP) has displayed excellent HER activities and triggered substantial interests as a promising water splitting electrocatalyst. In this work, a Mn doping strategy is proposed to improve the HER performances of MoP for the first time as well as the construction of novel porous interconnected structures. And the effect of doping contents and corresponding improvement mechanism are also discussed. It is found that the obtained 0.05Mn-MoP catalyst with porous interconnected nanosheets (NSs) presents the best HER properties as well as outstanding durability. The porous interconnected structures offer more exposed active sites, and the Mn doping optimizes the electronic configuration of MoP, leading to lower charge transfer resistance and higher intrinsic activity. This work provides a facile method to construct porous structures and demonstrate the effective strategy of Mn doping for the enhancement of MoP for the HER.

Application of a one dimensional Co-MOP wires on supercapacitors

Ping-Ping Sun,Yi-Ming Li,Yu-Hang Zhang,Hongwei Shi,Fa-Nian Shi

Herein, we designed and prepared a one-dimensional (1-D) cobalt-based metal organic coordination polymer (2,4-pdc-Co) by hydrothermal method. 2,4-pdc-Co has the molecular formula of Co 4 (H 2 O) 10 (2,4-pdc) 4 and possesses orthorhombic symmetry Pna 2 1 space group. In the same synthesis method, we added urea as a template. On the premise of maintaining this 1-D microstructure, we modified the block-shape 2,4-pdc-Co into a 1-D wire (2,4-pdc-Co-W). As an electrode material for supercapacitors, compared with 2,4-pdc-Co, the modified 2,4-pdc-Co-W shows better electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance of the optimized electrode material can reach 325 F g -1 at 1 A g −1 . 2,4-pdc-Co-W is also assembled with activated carbon to form a battery-type hybrid supercapacitor. As the positive material for the device, an assembled hybridcapacitor delivers an energy density of 17.7 Wh kg −1 at power density of 400 W kg −1 .

Highly salt-resistant polypyrrole decorated waste mop sponge solar evaporator for efficient desalination

Zhihui Yang,Chenxi Han,Yue Zheng,Yibing Chen,Weiming Wang,Xue Min,Jun Xiong,Ming Li

Interfacial solar desalination (ISE) emerges as a promising strategy to tackle the worldwide freshwater shortage. However, developing cost-effective solar evaporators that demonstrate exceptional evaporation rates while maintaining high salt-resistance is a tremendous challenge. This study introduces a three-dimensional (3D) solar evaporator, referred to as PPy-WMS, which is developed by employing a straightforward solution reaction to decorate polypyrrole (PPy) onto a waste mop sponge (WMS). The 3D PPy-WMS solar evaporator can capture ambient energy. When the exposure height is 6 cm, the PPy-WMS achieves an exceptional evaporation rate of 3.66 kg m −2  h −1 under 1-solar intensity. The macropore structure in WMS promotes water transport and facilitates salt ions backflow, resulting in high salt-resistance. The evaporation rate maintains at 2.91 kg m −2  h −1 when desalinating simulated seawater (20 wt%). Outdoor desalination experiments exhibit that 1 m 2 of PPy-WMS can extract about 15 kg of freshwater per day. This economical and straightforwardly designed solar evaporator exhibits outstanding salt-resistance, presenting a viable remedy to address global freshwater scarcity.

Self-assembled FeP/MoP co-doped nanoporous carbon matrix for hydrogen evolution application

Yuelong Xu,Na Li,Ran Wang,Liang Xu,Zhiwei Liu,Tifeng Jiao,Zhenfa Liu

Metal phosphides are usually being utilized for hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts with enormous potential. Meanwhile, the heterostructure can enhance the catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Inspired by the recent preparation of efficient catalysts for HER by using heterogeneous structures of different metal phosphides, we have designed a simple two-step method strategy based on sol-gel/carbonization to prepare the bimetal phosphide coated by nitrogen and phosphorus codoped (N,P-codoped) porous carbon . Phytic acid, chitosan and aniline are adopted to form the N,P-codoped porous carbon framework, the ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) and ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (H 8 MoN 2 O 4 ) are used as the metal sources to obtained bimetal phosphides (MoP/FeP). The heterostructural interface between the bimetal phosphides of MoP/FeP enhance the catalytic performance, while the N,P-codoped porous carbon promotes the development of reaction kinetics to accelerate the mass and electron transition. The prepared catalysts display limited overpotentials at high current density and exhibit good stability for long-time test. Density functional theory (DFT) is adopted to investigate the interact between the bimetal phosphides, which proves that the heterostructural interface can reduce the reaction Gibbs free-energy (△G H* ) and benefit the adsorption / desorption of intermediate H* . This work provides a facile route to the design of the metal phosphides for HER.

MoO2/MoP-Decorated CdIn2S4 Octahedral Nanostructures for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Pollutant Degradation

Wei Ren,Ruiru Si,Jiahui Wang,Yang Yang,Jingbiao Ge,Xiuzhen Zheng,Shifu Chen

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, photocatalysis is considered a powerful means to address environmental pollution and the energy crisis. In this work, CdIn2S4 (CIS) nanosized octahedrons modified with sheet-like porous MoO2/MoP (MOP) as a non-noble metal cocatalyst were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. In order to obtain the optimal MOP cocatalysts, the photocatalytic performance of the MOP/CIS composites was evaluated by H2 production and pollutant degradation under visible light irradiation. Among them, 7% MOP/CIS showed the best photocatalytic activity in H2 production (5.96 mmol·g–1·h–1), much higher than that of pure MOP and CIS. Additionally, it demonstrated excellent performance in the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and methyl orange (MO), with rate constants as high as 0.04911 min–1 and 0.03504 min–1, respectively. The superior photocatalytic performance of the MOP/CIS heterostructure was mostly attributed to the morphology design, broad visible light absorption, and effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers. This work provides a promising nanostructure design of visible-light-driven metal sulfide heterostructure for photocatalytic H2 production and pollutant degradation.

Improving catalytic activity of MoP for CO2 reforming of methane via ZrO2 modification

Yan Kong,Long Tian,Guiming Xie,Xiaorui Wang,Yi Man,Zhou-jun Wang

Molybdenum phosphide (MoP) has attracted increasing attention as a novel catalytic material for CO 2 reforming of methane in virtue of superior coke resistance, but its catalytic reactivity is still relatively low. This work for the first time improved the reforming activity of MoP via ZrO 2 modification. The Zr 0.01 MoP catalyst with Zr/Mo molar ratio of 0.01 possessed much higher activity than bare MoP at 800–900 °C. Structural characterizations revealed that the introduction of ZrO 2 would decrease the particle size, modify the electronic structure and change the reducibility property of MoP, which may function together to deliver the higher activity.

Plasma-Engineered MoP with nitrogen doping: Electron localization toward efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution

Nana Chen,Wenbiao Zhang,Jiachang Zeng,Liuqing He,Dan Li,Qingsheng Gao

Surface engineering boosts electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and more importantly serves as a key platform to uncover catalytic mechanism. Herein, we use plasma treatment under N 2 or Ar to engineer MoP for alkaline HER. Beyond the reduced particle size (in both Ar and N 2 cases), the N 2 plasma treatment further results in N-doping into MoP, which enriches Mo-P active species and causes electron localization near doped sites. Accordingly, water dissociation is promoted thanks to the facilitated OH* desorption, leading to remarkable improvement in alkaline HER. The optimal N-doped MoP accomplishes high performance in 1.0 M KOH, with a low η 10 (overpotential at a current density of -10 mA cm geo −2 ) of 70 mV and a low Tafel slope of 55 mV dec -1 , which is superior to most of Pt-free counterparts. Providing atomic-level insight into the structure-activity relationship on engineered surface, this work will open up new opportunities for electrocatalyst design.

MoP QDs@graphene as highly efficient electrocatalyst for polysulfide conversion in Li-S batteries

Bo Yu,Fei Ma,Dongjiang Chen,Katam Srinivas,Xiaojuan Zhang,Xinqiang Wang,Bin Wang,Wanli Zhang,Zegao Wang,Weidong He,Yuanfu Chen

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish redox conversion significantly hinder practical implementation of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). To overcome these issues, herein, we present MoP quantum dots anchored N, P-doped graphene (MPQ@G) as a multifunctional LSB cathode. The N, P-doped graphene layers serve as a conductive skeleton to support the MoP QDs which can accelerate the electron transfer, physically hinder the polysulfide migration and thus enhance the electrochemical performance. More importantly, as a polar and conductive catalyst, MoP QDs provide catalytically active sites for the conversion of LiPSs. As a result, the LSBs with MPQ@G/S cathodes deliver an elevated initial capacity of 1220.2 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and remain 98.9% after rate cycles, signifying its exceptional cycling stability. Moreover, it displays a large capacity of 681.2 mAh g −1 even at a high rate of 1 C. The Li-S pouch cell also presents high specific capacities and preeminent cycling stabilities, confirming its great potential for high-rate applications. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the improved absorptivity and redox conversion reversibility of LiPSs. This work provides an efficient strategy to improve composite with highly adsorptive and catalytic properties for high-performance Li-S batteries.

NaCl template-assisted construction of a CoP–MoP heterostructured electrocatalyst for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction

Yunni Liu,Yinghao Tao,Zhaobing Lu,Jing Teng,Weiju Hao,Jun Lin,Guisheng Li

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia is a promising technology to store renewable energy and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. However, it usually suffers from low ammonia yield and selectivity because of the lack of efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, we report that the construction of metal phosphide heterojunctions is an efficient strategy for NRR activity enhancement. A CoP–MoP heterojunction electrocatalyst, which is fabricated by a facile NaCl template-assisted strategy, exhibits a favorable ammonia yield rate of 77.8 μg h−1 mgcat−1 (38.9 μg h−1 cm−2) and a high faradaic efficiency of 11.16% at −0.50 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. The high NRR electrocatalytic activity can be attributed to the electronic coupling effects and interfacial synergistic effects of CoP and MoP at the heterojunction interface, which accelerates the electron transfer rate. Moreover, Mo doping changes the d-band centers of metal sites on the CoP surface, which is conducive to N2 adsorption and promotes N2* adsorption in the competition of occupying active sites, thus inhibiting the HER. This work manifests the high potential of phosphide electrocatalysts and opens an alternative route toward NRR electrocatalysis.

Carbonized Wood Decorated with Ternary Heterogeneous MoS2–MoP–Mo2C Nanoparticles for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Qiuyu Du,Yaoxing Wang,Xueqin Fan,Xueqi Li,Yingying Liu,Peng Jiao,Pengyu Xing,Ran Yin,Wentao Gan

The assembly of diverse active materials significantly enhances the efficiency of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we prepare a three-phase composite structure electrocatalyst on carbonized wood, in which molybdenum carbide and molybdenum phosphide are attached to molybdenum sulfide nanosheets (MoS2–MoP–Mo2C@CW) through the hydrothermal method in combination with high-temperature calcination for a pH-universal HER. MoS2 possesses abundant unsaturated coordination edge active sites, thus facilitating the adsorption and desorption of the hydrogen intermediate (H*). The synergistic effect between MoS2, MoP featuring favorable electronic conductivity, and Mo2C holding strong adsorption of H* enhances the catalytic activity for the pH-universal HER. Moreover, the carbonized wood with a hierarchical porous structure and aligned microchannels accelerates mass transport during the HER. As a result, the molybdenum-based self-supported composite electrode exhibits outstanding HER performance with the low overpotentials of 46, 84, and 65 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm–2 and the corresponding Tafel slopes of 57, 111 mV, and 63 mV dec–1 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic environments, respectively. MoS2–MoP–Mo2C@CW also shows a long-term durability of 200 h over a broad pH range at 10 mA cm–2. This work provides an effective strategy for the development of multiphase carbonized wood-based electrocatalysts for the pH-universal HER.

MoP assists the promotion on Fe2P and FeN4 for oxygen reduction and zinc-air battery

Zhiwen Li,Hezhen Wang,Yan Xie,Yifei Zhang,Jianxin Gao,Yinghao Xu,Li Chen,Liangliang Xu,Erdong Wang,Gao Li

It is of great significance but remains challenging to simultaneously development cost-effective and efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in both alkaline and acidic solutions. In current work, a multi-component synergism system is developed, which is comprised of molybdenum phosphide (MoP) shell onto iron phosphide clusters anchored on carbon matrixes that embedded with numerous FeN 4 species (MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 ). The optimized MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 electrocatalyst delivers a synergistic enhancement in both alkaline and acidic ORR performances: E 1/2 : 0.885 V (0.1 M KOH electrolyte) and E 1/2 : 0.742 V (0.1 M HClO 4 electrolyte). Furthermore, the equipped zinc-air batteries (ZABs) of MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 exhibit a power density of 140.6 mW cm −2 @219.6 mA cm −2 , which surpasses the corresponding Fe 2 P-FeN 4 and commercial Pt/C catalyst. The computational calculations reveal that MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 shows a relative increase of d -band center closer to Fermin level than Fe 2 P-FeN 4 , tuning the rate-determining step to conversion of *O to *OOH intermediate, thus significant reducing the energy barrier and enhancing ORR activity. This strategy opens new opportunities to rational design of Fe-based nanocomposites for stimulated ORR and further ZAB activities.
