Magnesium holds significant promise as an on-site hydrogen generation material due to its high theoretical hydrogen yield, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, its practical application is severely hindered by the magnesium hydroxide passivation layer formed during hydrolysis. In this study, a composite catalyst of molybdenum disilicide supported on coconut shell-derived activated carbon (MoSi 2 /C) was synthesized via a two-step calcination method and subsequently compounded with magnesium powder through ball milling. The as-prepared Mg-5wt% MoSi 2 /C composite exhibits remarkable hydrogen production performance via hydrolysis in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution (simulating seawater). At 25 °C, it achieves a hydrogen yield of 916 mL/g within 90 s and a maximum hydrogen generation rate (mHGR) of 780 mL·g −1 ·min −1 , significantly outperforming pure Mg and a Mg-C composite. The apparent activation energy for the hydrolysis of this composite is notably reduced to 15.62 kJ mol −1 , indicating substantially enhanced reaction kinetics. The enhanced performance originates from the synergistic effect between the conductive carbon matrix and the highly dispersed MoSi 2 nanoparticles: the carbon matrix effectively prevents the agglomeration of Mg particles and facilitates electron transfer, while the MoSi 2 nanoparticles provide abundant active sites for the hydrolysis reaction. This work presents an efficient catalytic strategy for developing high-performance, low-cost magnesium-based materials for hydrogen production via hydrolysis.

In this study, MoAlB was introduced as a reactive precursor in MoSi 2 -based ceramics. During spark plasma sintering, MoAlB underwent in-situ decomposition, forming MoB and Al 2 O 3 phases. These phases were distributed uniformly within the MoSi 2 matrix as reinforcing phases. This resulted in significant improvements in hardness and toughness, with the peak flexural strength obtained for 10 vol% MoAlB addition. Oxidation tests from 900-1500 ℃ revealed a temperature-dependent oxidation behavior. At 1500 ℃, volatilization of MoO 3 and B 2 O 3 destabilized the oxide scale, while the 5 vol% MoAlB composite offered excellent protection at intermediate temperatures (900-1200 ℃). The formation of a stable SiO 2 -B 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 self-healing glass provided effective protection in this critical temperature range. These findings demonstrate MoAlB’s effectiveness in designing MoSi 2 -based ceramics for intermediate temperature applications.

Solar-driven CO 2 reduction is often limited by slow surface reactions and large thermodynamic barriers. In this work, we activated the hidden reactivity of molybdenum disilicide (MoSi 2 ) through controlled nitrogen (N) doping. Instead of simple physical mixing, nitrogen incorporation triggers a clear rearrangement of the crystal structure, leading to the preferred exposure of the active (110) facets and an improvement in the porous framework. Comprehensive spectroscopic analyses combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a synergistic electronic modulation mechanism. Crucially, the formation of electron-rich Mo centers significantly lowers the work function and establishes a robust electron reservoir. This configuration thermodynamically drives the rapid injection of photogenerated electrons into surface-adsorbed species, effectively reversing the rate-determining protonation step of CO 2 * to COOH* from an endergonic barrier to a spontaneous process. As a result, the optimized catalyst achieves a striking 34-fold increase in the CO production rate and reaches a CO to CH 4 selectivity of about 134. This study not only explains how activity is improved in non-oxide systems from several different aspects but also provides a clear and practical approach for designing future intermetallic photocatalysts by carefully tuning their energy bands and defect states.

α-Al 2 O 3 was coated on the powder surface using the precipitation method to improve the pre-oxidation resistance of molybdenum disilicide in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). The coating effects of four different aluminum sources (Al(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O) to MoSi 2 mass ratios were evaluated by viscosity and micro-morphology. The shell-forming effects on the powder size and post-treatment were thoroughly analyzed to meet the requirements for practical application in TBCs. The results showed that the precipitation method was superior to the sol-gel process in terms of the shell thickness obtained. Optimal shell-forming was generated at 1200 °C in an inert atmosphere . A bonding layer (Al 6 Si 2 O 13 ) would be formed at the core-shell interface, further preventing oxidation penetration. The self-healing particles MoSi 2 @α-Al 2 O 3 can effectively seal micro-cracks (width below 300 nm) because of the fluidity of SiO 2 at working temperatures.

Molybdenum disilicide ceramics have become highly promising high-temperature structural materials due to their high melting point and excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance, but their room-temperature brittleness limits their broader application. Therefore, this study aims to improve the physical and mechanical properties of MoSi2 by incorporating reinforcing phases and employing high-temperature and high-pressure sintering methods. High-density MoSi2-20 mol % Mo5Si3 composite ceramic samples were prepared by a sintering process at a constant pressure of 4.5 GPa over the temperature range of 1100–1300 °C. Characterization results showed that the composite ceramic samples exhibited high relative density. Its maximum measured values of Vickers hardness and fracture toughness are 15.358 ± 0.187 GPa and 6.497 ± 0.424 MPa·m1/2, respectively, both superior to most molybdenum silicide-based materials prepared by conventional methods. It also possesses excellent heat/electrical transfer performance. Notably, the sintered samples showed no significant mass gain in an air atmosphere at 1500 °C, exhibiting excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance. The underlying mechanism is revealed by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. This study provides a new route for preparing high-performance molybdenum silicide-based composite ceramics and lays a theoretical and experimental foundation for their application in extreme environments, such as hot-section components in aerospace engines and missile nozzles.

N-doped SiC-MoSi 2 ceramics were successfully fabricated by hot pressing in N 2 using Y(NO 3 ) 3 .6 H 2 O as both sintering aids and additional N sources. The impact of Y(NO 3 ) 3 .6 H 2 O content on the densification, electrical properties, and infrared emission performance of the resulting ceramics were investigated. The distribution of Y-based sintering aid is improved by melting of Y(NO 3 ) 3 .6 H 2 O during slurry drying, enabling the relative density to increase up to 97.4%. Y(NO 3 ) 3 .6 H 2 O subsequently decomposes during sintering and allows the substitution of atomic N for the C sites in SiC lattice and production of the N-derived donor level. A larger amount of N dopant elevates the carrier density up to 1.90 × 10 16 cm -3 . Remarkably, The SiC − 10 wt% MoSi 2 ceramics sintered with 16.9 wt% Y(NO 3 ) 3 .6 H 2 O exhibits the lowest electrical resistivity (0.791 Ω·cm at room temperature) and highest infrared emissivity (0.913 at 800 ℃), the latter of which may also be attributed to lattice distortion induced by N doping . This work demonstrates N doping as a prospective strategy for synergistically optimizing the electrical conduction and infrared emission performance of SiC-based ceramics for infrared source applications.

An innovative two-step approach of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) was developed to rapidly fabricate MoSi 2 and Mo(Al,Si) 2 ceramics for high-temperature anti-oxidation applications. The SHS process predominantly promoted the synthesis of high-purity and high-yield MoSi 2 and Mo(Si,Al) 2 phases in the alloyed powders. Subsequently, dense and crack-free MoSi 2 and Mo(Al,Si) 2 ceramics were produced using SPS. 1500 °C oxidation tests of the ceramics (100 h) revealed the formation of a protective SiO 2 oxide layer on the surface of MoSi 2 ceramics, while an Al-Si-O composite glassy oxide layer formed on Mo(Si,Al) 2 ceramics, which exhibited better thermal stability and lower oxygen permeability compared to the single SiO 2 oxide layer. However, an excessive Al content (>0.05 at.%) compromised the oxidation resistance due to the emergence of a Si-depleted Mo 5 (Si,Al) 3 layer with inferior oxidation resistance, which was caused by the high-temperature diffusion of Si. Therefore, via this novel two-step SHS-SPS technique compact and crack-free Mo(Si,Al) 2 ceramics can be rapidly synthesized at high temperatures. When trace amount of Al was added (0.05 at.%), Mo(Si 0.95 Al 0.05 ) 2 showed optimum high-temperature oxidation resistance.

Spark Plasma Sintering technique was applied to fabricate MoSi 2 and MoSi 2 -bentonite coatings on molybdenum. The phase composition, morphologies and anti-oxidation properties of the coatings at 1500 °C were investigated. Penetrated cracks generated in MoSi 2 coating after SPS while the composite coating was crack-free because of the reduction of CTE mismatch. Cracks existed in the silica layer of MoSi 2 coating after oxidation while the silica layer of bentonite-containing coating showed dense and crack-free morphologies. Compared with MoSi 2 , the composite coating possessed thinner Mo 5 Si 3 diffusion layer and silica layer, exhibiting less loss of substrate and coating with improved oxidation resistance.

MoSi 2 -MoB-ZrO 2 composite powders are one-step synthesized prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), which are further utilized to prepare the oxidation protective coatings by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method on molybdenum substrate. Microstructure and properties of the coatings were investigated and determined. Oxidation behavior of the coatings at high temperature was also studied. The results showed that the composite coating is dense and crack-free due to the addition of ZrO 2 , which is beneficial for the decrease of mismatch in coefficient of thermal expansion, and no void exists in the diffusion layer owing to the diffusion of Si, which is inhibited by adding MoB. Compared with the pure MoSi2 coating, the high hardness of the composite coating is enhanced by about 20% while the fracture toughness of the composite coating is improved by about 25%, which makes the occurrence of intergranular fracture , crack deflection and crack bridging. After oxidation at 1400 °C for 80 h, MoSi 2 coating failed while xMoSi 2 -MoB-3ZrO 2 (x = 3, 4, 5) composite coating still kept its protective effect. Only a little substrate is consumed during oxidation and improved oxidation resistance is gained by MoSi 2 -MoB-ZrO 2 composite coating. 3MoSi 2 -MoB-3ZrO 2 coating shows the relatively best oxidation resistance due to the formation of crack-free oxide film on the surface of the coating.

MoSi 2 coatings are prepared using spent and commercial MoSi 2 powders as raw materials to protect niobium (Nb) substrate by spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique, and the microstructure and oxidation resistance of the coatings at 1500 °C are investigated. Results showed that obvious pores are found in MoSi 2 coating using commercial MoSi 2 (MC coating) after SPS while MoSi 2 coating using spent MoSi 2 (MS coating) is dense with low porosity. (Mo,Nb) 5 Si 3 diffusion layer is generated between MS coating and the substrate with no gap or cracks, showing excellent metallurgical bonding. After long-term oxidation at elevated temperature, pores and exposed Mo 5 Si 3 can be observed in the oxide scale of MC coating, while dense and complete oxide scale is obtained by MS coating. Lowest mass gain (2.78 mg cm −2 ) is acquired by MS coating after oxidation at 1500 °C for 40 h because SiO 2 oxide scale is completely formed on the dense and bentonite-containing coating, blocking the diffusion of oxygen at high temperature. Compared with MC coating, no further oxidation occurs inside the MS coating or substrate, exhibiting better high-temperature oxidation resistance.

Reusable hypersonic vehicles require large area thermal protection materials with high resistance to oxidation corrosion. Conventional carbon fiber/phenolic resin composites suffer from poor oxidation corrosion resistance and are limited to single use. Here we develop a novel ceramizable composite consisting of Ti 3 AlC 2 -MoSi 2 -SiB 6 modified Ni coated carbon fiber reinforced boron phenolic resin. After 1 to 15 thermal cycles at 1200°C for 15 min each, the composite shows excellent dimensional stability. The changes in mass, thickness, and density after 15 cycles are all within 7% of the initial heat-treated sample. Flexural strength reaches 28.0 MPa after 10 cycles and remains 19.4 MPa after 15 cycles. The superior oxidation corrosion resistance arises from the synergistic effects of oxygen consumption, oxygen barrier, and self-healing functions provided by the ceramizable fillers and Ni coating. In situ formed ceramic phases preserve the fiber skeleton integrity. Ni catalyzes pyrolytic carbon (PyC) graphitization and together with ceramization products forms a dense multiphase ceramic layer that protects against oxidative attack. These synergistic effects endow the composite with outstanding reusable performance for hypersonic vehicle applications. Highlights A novel reusable ceramizable composite is fabricated by a dual-modification synergistic reinforced strategy involving ceramizable fillers and fiber coatings. It exhibits satisfactory oxidation resistance, dimensional stability, and reusability. The flexural strength after 10 thermal cycles reaches 28.0 MPa.

HfB 2 -SiC-MoSi 2 composites with varying MoSi 2 contents were fabricated via gel-casting molding combined with reactive melt infiltration (RMI) at a relatively low temperature of 1500℃, achieving high density with porosity less than 1 % and uniformly distributed constituent phases. The composites exhibited excellent oxidation resistance during isothermal oxidation at 1650 °C, with mass gains of 15.40, 8.50, 7.38, and 11.31 mg/cm² after 100 h. The oxide layer grew thicker and tended to be uniform and dense over time. The oxidation process all followed a parabolic law. The addition of MoSi 2 significantly reduced the oxidation rate. The mechanism is attributed to the fact that the oxidation of MoSi 2 can promote the formation of additional SiO 2 glass, facilitating the rapid development of a dense protective oxide layer, thereby effectively blocking oxygen diffusion and suppressing the formation of a SiC-depleted layer. An appropriate amount of MoSi 2 , specifically 20 wt% MoSi 2 , optimizes the fluidity of the glass layer and enhances pore filling; however, excessive MoSi 2 reduces HfO 2 content and weaken viscosity. The formation of the HfSiO 4 phase with high-melting-point further improves the structural stability and oxygen resistance of the oxide scale, extending the service life at 1650°C. This work provides valuable guidance for designing oxidation-resistant materials for prolonged aerospace applications.
