Hydrophilic hyaluronic acid-induced crumpling of Nb2CTx nanosheets: Enabling fast humidity sensing based on primary battery

Qiuni Zhao,Yadong Jiang,Liu Yuan,Zhen Yuan,Boyu Zhang,Bohao Liu,Mingxiang Zhang,Qi Huang,Zaihua Duan,Huiling Tai

Combining advanced energy-generation technologies with sensors to develop self-powered sensing shows great potential in intelligent electronics, but sluggish response kinetics and low output are the main obstacles. Herein, we design a hyaluronic acid (HA)-induced crumpling of Nb 2 CT x nanosheet to construct hydrogen bond conduction network, and develop it for fast humidity sensing based on primary battery . The in-situ formation of organic/inorganic hybrid interphase with crumpling structure by electrostatic flocculation is capable to provide abundant adsorption sites and accelerate proton (H + ) transport. Benefited from these, the Nb 2 CT x /HA primary battery-based humidity sensor (PBHS) not only exhibits an outstanding response and recovery speed (15.1 s and 3.4 s at 72.0 % relative humidity (RH)), high response (0.7 V), low hysteresis (3.6 % RH), but also can be also used as a nanogenerator with a power of 0.96 μW and sustainable voltage output for 12 h. Furthermore, the multifunctional applications are demonstrated in medical assisted monitoring, health care, intelligent sensing, and green-energy generation. This work offers a new insight into PBHS design and the development of high-performance power-generation humidity sensor.

Synergistic etching and intercalation enables ultrathin Ti3C2Tx and Nb2CTx MXene nanosheets

Xiong Qian-Qian,Muhmood Tahir,Zhao Cheng-Xiao,Xu Jing-San,Yang Xiao-Fei

Transition metal-containing MXene has shown great potential in the promising research fields, and its performance strongly depends on the composition, structure, dimension, and surface chemistry. Thus, rational design and controllable synthesis of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets with uniform surface terminations are of great importance. However, the use of 2D MXene, particularly in solar-powered photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, is restricted by the formation of thick, multi-layered MXene flakes with a small interlayer spacing produced from the conventional hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching method. In this work, we report a few-layer MXene nanosheets by solely employing a mixture of lithium fluoride and hydrochloric acid as the etching reagent. Synergic etching and intercalation technique endows MXene with ultrathin 2D nanostructures; moreover, the use of fluoride salt, rather than harmful HF, offers a safer and environmentally-friendly synthetic route for scalable green production of 2D MXene. Both the obtained Ti 3 C 2 T x and Nb 2 CT x nanosheets show a highly efficient photoelectrochemical performance superior to highly stacked MXene flakes. This work highlights a mild, simultaneous etching and delamination strategy for the development of high quality of 2D MXene nanosheets. Graphical abstract

Yirui Zhao,Hongshun Hao,Jiaqi Zhong,Gongliang Zhang,Jingran Bi,Shuang Yan,Feng Hong,Hongman Hou

Foodborne pathogens are the main factors causing food poisoning, and it is of great significance to develop novel nanocomposites to obtain efficient and stable photothermal-assisted photocatalysts for killing foodborne pathogens. In this paper, Z-type heterojunction WO 3 /TpPa-1 with a core-shell structure was constructed by in-situ synthesis, and the Nb 2 CT x was used as a co-catalyst to obtain an efficient ternary composite WO 3 /TpPa-1/N-Nb 2 CT x . Compared to the monomers, the ternary composites improved light trapping, interfacial separation effectiveness, and the mobility of photogenerated carriers. The WO 3 /TpPa-1/15% N-Nb 2 CT x has the best sterilization efficiency of 99.69% under visible-infrared light irradiation for 30 min. The construction of WO 3 /TpPa-1/N-Nb 2 CT x promoted the separation of electron and hole pairs, which improved the electron transport efficiency and the generation of reactive oxygen species. In addition, the excellent photothermal effect of Nb 2 CT x improves the sterilization performance of WO 3 /TpPa-1/N-Nb 2 CT x . The WO 3 /TpPa-1/N-Nb 2 CT x has a broad application prospect in photothermal-assisted photocatalytic sterilization.

PEDOT@Nb2CTX/cotton Fabric Thermoelectric-Supercapacitor for Power Generation and Storage Integration

Xing Liu,Haiyu Fu,Liqi Zhou,Pei Chen,Baolei Shen,Wei-Xin Liu,Ching-Wen Lou,Jia-Horng Lin,Ting-Ting Li

With the rapid development of smart wearable devices, the limitations of traditional supercapacitors—which rely on external power sources and have separate energy harvesting and storage functions—need to be overcome. This study employs Nb₂CT X and conductive polymer PEDOT to construct a PEDOT@Nb₂CT X /cotton fabric composite electrode via low-temperature interface polymerization, integrating thermoelectric effects with electrochemical energy storage. By controlling the loading of Nb₂CT X through immersion coating, electrode performance is optimized, while introducing low-temperature interface polymerization technology to grow PEDOT enhances charge storage capacity. Electrochemical testing shows that the PEDOT@Nb₂CT X-120 single electrode achieves areal capacitance of 66.86 mF/cm² at 2 mA/cm², a 1.36-fold increase compared to pure Nb₂CT X /cotton fabric; the assembled symmetric supercapacitor exhibits excellent cycling stability, with a capacitance retention rate of 79.4% after 5,000 charge-discharge cycles. Thermal performance testing indicates that at a temperature difference of 30 °C, the device can increase the supercapacitor voltage by 57 mV within 15 seconds, enabling thermal energy conversion and storage. This study provides a new strategy for integrating environmental thermal energy harvesting and flexible energy storage in wearable devices, and the prepared composite device holds potential application value in the field of self-powered flexible electronics.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Pt/Nb2CTx MXene Composites for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Xiaoyuan Fan,Peng Du,Xiaoxuan Ma,Ruyue Wang,Jingteng Ma,Yonggang Wang,Dongyu Fan,Yuanzheng Long,Bohan Deng,Kai Huang,Hui Wu

Production of hydrogen from water splitting has been considered as a promising solution for energy conversion and storage. Since a noble metal-based structure is still the most satisfactory but scarce kind of catalyst, it is significant to allow for practical application of such catalysts by engineering the heterogeneous structure and developing green and facile synthetic strategies. Herein, we report a mechanochemical ball milling synthesis of platinum nanoclusters immobilized on a 2D transition metal carbide MXene (Nb2CTx) as an enhanced catalyst for hydrogen evolution. After annealing at 600 °C, ultrafine Pt3Nb nanoclusters are formed on the Pt/Nb2CTxcatalyst. As prepared, the Pt/Nb2CTx-600 catalyst demonstrates superior electrochemical HER activity and stability with an ultralow overpotential of 5 mV and 46 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, in comparison with other Nb2CTx-based catalysts and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, the remarkable durability is also confirmed by accelerated durability tests (ADTs) and long-term chronoamperometry (CA) tests. The excellent HER performance was attributed to high Pt dispersion and more active site exposure by the mechanochemical process and thermal treatment. Such results suggest that the mechanochemical strategy provides a novel approach for rational design and cost-effective production of electrocatalysts, also providing other potential applications in a wide range of areas. Keywords:hydrogen evolution;Pt-Nb alloy;mechanochemical synthesis;thermal annealing

Engineering highly active Ag/Nb2O5@Nb2CTx (MXene) photocatalysts via steering charge kinetics strategy

Chao Peng,Xi Xie,Wenkang Xu,Tao Zhou,Ping Wei,Jianbo Jia,Kun Zhang,Yonghai Cao,Hongjuan Wang,Feng Peng,Rui Yang,Xiqiang Yan,Hui Pan,Hao Yu

Steering charge kinetics is one of the most urgent unsolved issues in photocatalysis. The effective spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is particularly important in the design and controllable preparation of nano-photocatalysts. Herein, one-dimensional Nb 2 O 5 nanorod arrays with [0   0   1] orientation were grown in-situ on two-dimensional Nb 2 CT x MXenes through a facile hydrothermal method for the first time. Ag nanoparticles were then photodeposited on the Nb 2 O 5 nanorods to form hierarchical 0D/1D/2D nanohybrids. It was experimentally demonstrated that OH is predominantly adsorbed on Nb 2 CT x as termination groups, which resulted in a low work function (2.7 eV). Thanks to the unique structure, the highly active [0   0   1] Nb 2 O 5 nanorods afford high-efficiency photogeneration of electron-hole pairs, while the low-work-function OH terminated Nb 2 CT x allows for trapping holes, and Ag nanoparticles act as electron reservoir and sites of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The ternary Ag/Nb 2 O 5 @Nb 2 CT x nanohybrids reached a record HER activity (682.2 and 824.2 μmol·g -1 h −1 use methanol and glycerol as sacrificial agents, respectively) among the niobium-based photocatalysts, demonstrating the potential of MXenes as a platform for the synthesis of high-performance heterojunction structures, where the tunable electronic property is a key factor.

Flexible MXene-Nb2CTx/Bacterial Cellulose Film for Rapid Humidity Response and Multifunctional Biomimetic Applications

Hanqi Mou,Di Pang,Yuchuan Wang,Ying He,Honglin Li,Lijuan Ye,Hong Zhang,Yan Tang,Wanjun Li

Humidity-responsive actuators, which can directly convert ambient humidity changes into controllable mechanical deformation, exhibit broad application potential in fields such as bionic robotics, smart wearable devices, and human-machine interactive systems. MXenes have emerged as ideal humidity-responsive materials due to their unique two-dimensional layered structure, exceptional surface hydrophilicity and electrical conductivity. However, their poor environmental stability severely limits their application in humidity-driven actuators. In this study, we designed a composite film (MXBC) based on MXene-Nb2CTx and bacterial cellulose (BC), where a three-dimensional layered-fiber interwoven structure synergistically enhances humidity-driven performance through a hydrogen-bonding network. The MXBC film demonstrates an ultrafast response of 536° within 0.5 s under ΔRH = 50%, along with remarkable cycling stability over 3000 cycles, while maintaining robust mechanical properties. Leveraging these advantages, we successfully developed various intelligent bionic devices, including biomimetic flytraps, artificial flowers, smart switches, and adaptive clothing. This study not only provides a new strategy for developing highly stable and multifunctional smart actuating materials but also expands the application of MXenes in environmentally adaptive soft robotics and interactive wearable systems.

Nb2CTx decorated graphite felt as high performance negative electrode for vanadium redox flow battery

Qiang Li,JuHang Jiang,Dongyang Pei,Jie Li,ZhiChao Xue,Tianyu Zhang,Mingfu Yu,Peng Zhou,Hong Sun,Tian Zhang

The sluggish kinetics of negative V 2+ /V 3+ reaction is the key factor limiting the performance of vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). To further enhance the competitiveness of VRFB in the fields of energy storage, it is urgent to develop anode material with high catalytic activity toward V 2+ /V 3+ reaction. Taking the advantages of excellent conductivity and catalytic activity of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x , Nb 2 CT x , V 2 CT x ) with different transition metals are used as catalysts to improve the kinetics of V 2+ /V 3+ reaction. At the current density of 160 mA cm −2 , the battery equipped with Nb 2 CT X modified composite electrode shows the highest energy efficiency of 83.1 %, which is 12.3 % higher than that with pristine graphite felt (GF). Furthermore, the effect of MXene with different transition metals on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is studied based on density functional theory (DFT). HER occurred on Nb 2 CT x surface should overcome a higher energy barrier compared with Ti 3 C 2 T x and V 2 CT x , implying the ability to inhibit side reaction occurrence for Nb 2 CT x . Ascribing to the enhanced kinetics of V 2+ /V 3+ reaction and the effective inhibition of HER, the Nb 2 CT x -modified electrode exhibits the highest catalytic activity, reversibility and cycle stability. This work promotes the development and application of Nb-based MXene as a catalyst in VRFB.

Ni nanolayers deposited on Nb2CTx/CNT synergistically enhance alkaline bifunctional HER/OER catalytic activity

Zengkun You,Tian Tang,Kai Ou,Yuxiang Ni,Yudong Xia,Hongyan Wang

The escalating global energy crisis has intensified research efforts toward developing heterogeneous structures capable of addressing the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in electrocatalysis. In this study, a novel strategy for the design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts was proposed. Uniform Ni nanolayers were successfully deposited on Nb 2 CT x /CNT hybrid supports through a combination of CVD and magnetron sputtering techniques. The resulting Ni/Nb 2 CT x /CNT@NF catalyst demonstrated exceptional electrocatalytic performance in 1 M KOH. For HER, it achieved remarkably low overpotentials of 41 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 196 mV@100 mA cm −2 . Similarly, for OER, the catalyst exhibited outstanding activity with overpotentials of 299 mV@20 mA cm −2 and 337 mV@50 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the catalyst maintained stable performance at 20 mA cm −2 for 48 h without significant degradation, highlighting its excellent long-term stability. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to several key factors: (1) The uniform distribution of Ni nanolayers enhances intrinsic conductivity and increases the density of active sites; (2) The incorporation of CNTs expands the reaction interface, facilitating charge and mass transfer; and (3) The electronic interaction between Nb 2 CT x and Ni further optimizes the catalytic kinetics.

Dandan Fang,Huizhu Ren,Yitian Huang,Hong Dai,Defu Huang,Yanyu Lin

Herein, an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor based on a high performance probe of Nb 2 CTx MXene immobilized ZnO quantum dots (QDs) was constructed for Thyroglobulin (Tg) detection. ZnO QDs with good biocompatibility and catalytic property was for the first time utilized as coreaction accelerator in Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /S 2 O 8 2− system and enhanced ECL signal. Specifically, ZnO QDs can facilitate S 2 O 8 2− reduction to generate more SO 4 − , and then reacted with cathodic radical of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , realizing 2-fold enhancement in ECL intensity. Additionally, Nb 2 CTx MXene possesses excellent properties and was used as prominent supporter, improving the loading capacity of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ and ZnO QDs, and accelerating the electron transfer, resulting in ECL signal enhancement. Furthermore, Nb 2 CTx MXene acted as temperature controller and increased the electrode surface temperature by converting laser energy into heat, further amplified ECL signal. Because of the high sensitivity, good specificity and favorable stability, the proposed immunosensor realized sensitive detection of Thyroglobulin and had a great application prospect in bioanalysis and clinical diagnosis.

Bridging the charge gap: Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterojunctions as electronic highways in vanadium redox flow battery

Tianxing Yuan,Xingrong Chen,Yanqin Zhao,Yingqiao Jiang,Bin Li,Ningning Zhao,Jing Zhu,Lei Dai,Ling Wang,Zhangxing He

Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), as a potential technology for next-generation energy storage system, is restricted by the slow redox kinetics of vanadium ions. Implementing interface engineering strategies to functionalize the surface of MXene can effectively address this challenge. Herein, a Nb 2 CT x /Nb 2 O 5 Schottky heterostructure is constructed to facilitate high-speed charge transfer at the VRFB electrode through controllable in-situ oxidation. The loading amount of Nb 2 O 5 nanorods on the surface of Nb 2 CT x nanosheets was regulated by varying the hydrothermal reaction time. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the Schottky barrier formed between Nb 2 CT x and Nb 2 O 5 leads to the establishment of an internal electric field and reconfigures the electronic structure of surficial active sites. The rich pore structure of Nb 2 CT x /Nb 2 O 5 electrode effectively shortens the diffusion path for vanadium ions, while its excellent hydrophilicity enhances the interaction between vanadium ions and the electrodes. Compared with graphite felt, Nb 2 CT x /Nb 2 O 5 -2@GF cell shows a 20% increase in energy efficiency (EE) at 150 mA cm −2 cycling, reaching 75%, while maintaining stable performance for over 800 cycles. This means a significant advancement in the development of high-performance electrodes for VRFBs. This work offers an efficient and scalable strategy for the design of redox flow batteries.

Nb2CTx-MXene partially derived 1D Nb2O5 nanorod/2D Nb2C nanohybrid via interfacial synergy for enhanced capacitive deionization

Markos Medhin Ashebo,Zixiao Xu,Haolan Shi,Huancheng Dong,Ningning Liu,Fei Yu,Jie Ma

1D Nb 2 O 5 nanorods grown in situ uniformly on the surface 2D Nb 2 C MXene. • Nb 2 O 5 nanorods act as passivation layers, mitigating MXene restacking and oxidation. • Interfacial charge transfer between Nb 2 O 5 and Nb 2 C accelerates electron kinetics. • The Nb 2 O 5 -Nb 2 C hybrid exhibits excellent desalination performance and cycling stability. Self-stacking and oxidative instability limit the ion accessibility and cycling stability of MXene electrodes in capacitive deionization (CDI). To address these limitations, a controlled partial derivation strategy was used to construct Nb 2 O 5 nanorods on Nb 2 CT x MXene nanosheets, forming 1D Nb 2 O 5 nanorod/2D Nb 2 C heterostructure. The derived Nb 2 O 5 nanorods increased the accessible surface area, provided expanded ion intercalation channels, suppressed Nb 2 CT x restacking, and also acted as a partial passivation layer to inhibit further MXene oxidation. Electrochemical measurements showed that the Nb 2 O 5 -Nb 2 C electrode exhibited higher capacitance and lower charge-transfer resistance than pristine Nb 2 C, suggesting improved interfacial charge transfer behavior and ion storage kinetics. The Nb 2 O 5 -Nb 2 C hybrid delivered a salt adsorption capacity (SAC) of 51.2 mg g −1 at 1.6 V, an average salt removal rate (SAR) of 1.7 mg g −1  min −1 , and retained 90.5% of its initial capacity after 200 cycles. These results indicate that controlled partial oxidation can not only mitigates the instability of Nb 2 C, but also improves ion accessibility, electrochemical kinetics, and cycling durability of Nb-based MXene electrodes for CDI.
