Short-duration and repetitive power fluctuations associated with train acceleration, braking, and regenerative-energy recovery require energy-storage devices with rapid response, high-rate capability, and stable cycling. Here, a CoS 2 /Nd 2 O 3 composite positive electrode prepared at a confirmed Co/Nd molar feed ratio of 2:1 and a sulfur-treated carbon-nanotube (S-CNT) negative electrode were combined in an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor. The composite exhibited a predominantly mesoporous architecture with a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 213.21 m 2 g −1 , while the S-CNTs retained a continuous one-dimensional conductive network and sulfur-related surface species. The CoS 2 /Nd 2 O 3 electrode delivered 1961 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and retained 1401 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 , with 87.6% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The S-CNT electrode delivered 431 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , 28.7% above untreated CNTs under the same conditions, and retained 81.0% at 20 A g −1 . The two-electrode device retained 73.3% of its 1 A g −1 capacitance at 15 A g −1 and approximately 95.0% after 10,000 cycles. A retrospective first-order charge-balance analysis indicates that further optimization of the electrode mass ratio would be beneficial. These results support the tested material pair as a laboratory-scale platform for short-duration power buffering, while composition optimization, complete-device impedance characterization, and application-specific pulse validation would further strengthen its assessment for rail-transit applications.

The carbon aerogel (CA) uniformly doped neodymium oxide (Nd 2 O 3 ) nanoparticle was synthesized by an effective in-situ method via acid catalyzing and used as the cathode matrix for lithium-sulfur batteries . The doped materials with interconnected pore structure of CA and evenly dispersed Nd 2 O 3 offer crucial confinement role to anchor sulfur and suppress the loss of polysulfide ions for interrelate function of S/polysulfides by Nd 2 O 3 . The composited sulfur electrodes present high electrochemical performances and initial discharge capacities, especially, the Nd2-CA/S sample gains initial discharge capacity of 1327 mAh g − 1 at 0.2 C and remains at 1082 mAh g − 1 after 100 cycles. Meanwhile, it still remains capacity of about 907 mAh g − 1 at 0.5 C after 300 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performances can be ascribed to the crosslink mesoporous CA materials and well distributed neodymium oxide. Furthermore, the metal additive also takes promoting effect on redox reactions of the Li/S batteries presenting higher discharge voltages.

The transparent and thermal developments of high-purity Al 2 O 3 doped with different levels of Nd 2 O 3 were investigated. Dopant levels ranged from 500–1500 ppm (Nd/Al atomic ratio). The samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, transmittance spectroscopy and specific heat measurement. Results revealed that with proper Nd doped, Nd 3+ ions solid dissolved in Al 2 O 3 lattice, resulting in small and uniform grain and high bonding vibration, which was beneficial to transparent and thermal properties. With 1000 ppm Nd doped, Al 2 O 3 translucent ceramics showed a total transmittance of 89% and thermal conductivity of 41.7 W/m/K, indicating a potential application as substrate for effective heat dissipation and multi emitting surface in LEDs module.

In this study, a NiCo 2 S 4 @Nd 2 O 3 core–shell structured positive electrode was constructed via a two-step strategy. First, NiCo 2 S 4 nanorod cores were synthesized through a hydrothermal–sulfidation process, followed by the in situ coating of Nd 2 O 3 nanosheet shells using a sol–gel method. The CNT negative electrode was fabricated by loading carbon nanotubes onto a carbon paper substrate via vacuum filtration. Multiscale characterizations confirm the formation of a tightly integrated heterogeneous interface between the NiCo 2 S 4 nanorod core and the Nd 2 O 3 nanosheet shell, which effectively mitigates the volume expansion of NiCo 2 S 4 and accelerates charge transport. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the NiCo 2 S 4 @Nd 2 O 3 core–shell electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 2351 F g − 1 at 1 A g − 1 , with a capacitance retention of 77.4% at 20 A g − 1 , significantly outperforming pristine NiCo 2 S 4 or Nd 2 O 3 electrodes. An asymmetric supercapacitor assembled using the NiCo 2 S 4 @Nd 2 O 3 positive electrode and the CNT negative electrode exhibits outstanding overall performance within a wide voltage window of 0–1.6 V. It achieves a specific capacitance of 242 F g − 1 at 1 A g − 1 and retains approximately 93% of its initial capacitance after 6000 charge–discharge cycles. Moreover, the device delivers an energy density of 86.4 Wh kg − 1 at a power density of 800 W kg − 1 , and still maintains 62.4 Wh kg − 1 when the power density increases to 12 000 W kg − 1 . The core–shell structural design strategy proposed in this work provides an effective pathway for the development of high-performance supercapacitors and holds significant promise for applications in flexible energy storage systems.

Water vapor greatly interferes with gas sensing characteristics of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS). Consequently, for the first time, Nd 2 O 3 -loaded In 2 O 3 porous nanorods were synthesized which exhibited excellent H 2 S sensitivity along with prominent humidity-independent characteristics, whereas pristine In 2 O 3 without Nd 2 O 3 showed deteriorated H 2 S sensing features under increasing ambient humid conditions in a wide operating temperature range. The mechanism of humidity-independent H 2 S sensing properties was researched via X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), in-situ Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS) and the corresponding gas sensing measurements, which is in close relations with the inhibition of chemisorbed oxygen and scavenging hydroxyl groups on In 2 O 3 surface induced by surficial Nd 2 O 3 component. This strategy poses a cutting-edge comprehending of temperature-dependent humidity-interference on MOS, paves a novel route for fabricating H 2 S sensors with exceptional sensitivity, selectivity and anti-humidity properties, which will be quite conducive for real-time exhaled breath analyses in disease diagnosis.

To solve the problems of low sensitivity, high detection limit, high operating temperature, and poor stability of metal oxide semiconductor ethanol sensors, Nd-modified ZnO composites were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method by leveraging the unique advantages of rare earth elements in electronic structure and catalytic activity. The introduction of Nd species into the porous nanolayered structure of ZnO induced lattice distortion and generated an Nd 2 O 3 -ZnO heterojunction. This modification increased the oxygen vacancy defects in the material, promoted reactions between adsorbed oxygen species and ethanol, and thereby effectively enhanced the gas-sensing performance of the sensor. The results indicated that the 2% Nd-ZnO sensor achieved a lower operating temperature (375 °C), a high response (147 toward 100 ppm ethanol, 3.3 times that of pure ZnO), and an ultralow theoretical detection limit (80 ppb), together with excellent selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. These results demonstrate a heterojunction-defect co-engineering strategy enabled by rare-earth modification, providing an effective and practical pathway for designing high-performance ZnO-based ethanol gas sensors.

Rare-earth metal neodymium is an important raw material for NdFeB permanent magnets, and its demand has significantly increased in recent years. Molten salt electrolysis is the main method for the production of metal neodymium, so the study of the electrodeposition process of neodymium ions in molten salt at the cathode is of great significance for the production of metal neodymium. In this paper, the electrochemical deposition process of neodymium ions on a tungsten working electrode was studied in a LiF-NdF 3 -Nd 2 O 3 molten salt system using electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and open circuit potential. Additionally, the influence of LiF content in the molten salt on the electrodeposition process was analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the reduction of neodymium ions in the LiF-NdF 3 -Nd 2 O 3 molten salt system consists of two stepwise quasi-reversible redox reactions: Nd(III) → Nd(II) and Nd(II) → Nd(0). The corresponding reduction peak potentials are −0.78 V and −1.19 V, respectively. The Nd(III) → Nd(II) reaction is solely diffusion-controlled, while the Nd(II) → Nd(0) reaction is governed by both surface control and diffusion control in the electrochemical process. The increase in LiF content in the molten salt leads to a shift of the cathodic overpotential in the positive direction. When the LiF content is high, the reduction of neodymium ions on the electrode becomes unstable, making it unfavorable for the deposition of metal neodymium on the tungsten electrode.
