Dry reforming of methane (DRM) can spontaneously use CO2 and CH4 to produce syngas, but minimal sulfur impurities in the feed gas can poison and deactivate the catalyst. Although the Ni/Al2O3 catalyst has excellent DRM activity, it is challenging to regenerate due to sulfation of the support. Besides that, the loading of sacrificial promoters used to improve sulfur resistance, such as Cu, may impact the DRM performance of active sites. Here, a spatial separation strategy was proposed to precisely design a sulfur-resistant catalyst, dividing the catalyst into a DRM zone and a H2S adsorption zone. The Ni@SiO2@NiCu catalyst prepared by this strategy shows stable DRM performance and significantly improved sulfur resistance and can be regenerated repeatedly. The Ni@SiO2@NiCu catalyst has the best sulfur resistance, 6.8 times that of the spatially adjacent NiCu@SiO2 catalyst and 1.4 times that of the Ni@SiO2@Cu catalyst. This spatial separation strategy introduces a novel concept for the controllable synthesis of sulfur-resistant catalysts and may inspire further applications in the design and development of such catalysts.

New solid acid catalysts were prepared by bisphenol A, paraformaldehyde and chlorosulfonic acid, and applied to hydroxylalkylation/alkylation (HAA) of 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and cyclohexanone. After optimizing the reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-MF reached 99% and the yield of 5,5′-(cyclohexane-1,1-diyl)bis(2-methylfuran) acquired 98%. The activity and catalytic efficiency were higher than those of Amberlyst 15 and Amberlyst 36 resins, which could be rationalized by high acid strength. At the same time, the catalysts were characterized by acid–base titration and FTIR. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of HAA products of 2-methylfuran and cyclopentanone were processed on the Ni/SiO2 catalyst prepared by wet impregnation method to further convert into aviation kerosene, and the yield reached 93%.

Silica is one of the most referenced materials for the preparation of heterogeneous metal catalysts. However, silica spheres with smooth surfaces have difficulty encapsulating active metals due to their small surface area and the presence of only a handful of silicon hydroxyl groups on the surface. In this work, the silica sphere has been first consciously transformed into a hierarchical SiO 2 @silicate structure, and then the core–shell hetero-structured SiO 2 @Ni/SiO 2 catalyst can be tactfully obtained by reducing treatment. The core–shell catalyst is composed of a rigid core (SiO 2 ) and a rough shell (Ni NPs highly disperse on nanosheet SiO 2 ), which are carefully verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), field scanning electron microscope (FESEM), H 2 -TPR/TPD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The derived SiO 2 @Ni/SiO 2 catalyst can selectively hydrogenate vanillin in the aqueous phase at near-room temperature (40 ℃) and low hydrogen pressure (2 MPa H 2 ), and the conversion of vanillin can be up to 99%. The preparation method of the SiO 2 @Ni/SiO 2 catalyst is simple and can be amplified to a large scale at a low price, thus can be adopted to convert bio-derived unsaturated compounds in an economical and eco-friendly way.

Background: Nickel nanomaterials play an important role in biological applications,
but they have high toxicity and poor biocompatibility. To overcome these defects,
we coated the surface of Ni nanotubes with different thicknesses of SiO2 to reduce
cytotoxicity, improve biocompatibility, and broaden their biological application value.
Objective: This study aimed to construct Ni nanotubes with different thicknesses of SiO2
nanoshells; investigate the effects of silicon layer thickness, incubation time, and cell
line category on the cytotoxicity of the as-synthesized materials, and evaluate the biocompatibility
of the materials by biological enzymes. The Ni@SiO2-NH2 was selected
for use as an adsorbent for the adsorption and purification of histidine-rich proteins,
such as Bovine Hemoglobin (BHb).
Methods: Magnetic Ni nanotubes were prepared by the template-chemical deposition
method. A modified version of the Stöber process was used for the SiO2 coating of
Ni@SiO2 nanotubes, and adjusted by changing the volume of TEOS for different thicknesses
of SiO2 nanoshells.
Results: Different cell lines containing tumor cells and normal cells were used in the
toxicity experiment, which confirmed the low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility of
Ni@SiO2. To achieve high efficiency of immobilization and purification of histidine-
rich proteins, Ni@SiO2-NH2 was obtained by introducing the amino functional
group. The Ni@SiO2-NH2 was found to possess lower cytotoxicity and higher adsorption
capacity compared to other synthesized materials. Besides, the Ni@SiO2-NH2 also
exhibited good selectivity of histidine-rich proteins.
Conclusion: This work has not only provided ideas for reducing the cytotoxicity and improving
the biocompatibility of biological nanomaterials, but also laid a foundation for
subsequent biological applications.

Catalytic reforming technology holds significant potential for treating biomass gasification tar. However, the design of catalysts that offer high activity, low carbon deposition, and long-term stability remains a challenge. In this study, Ni@SiO 2 yolk-shell catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in toluene steam reforming. The Ni@SiO 2 -10 catalyst demonstrated excellent stability and activity, maintaining a 100 % toluene conversion rate over a 120-h test period with virtually no carbon deposition after reforming. In contrast, Ni/SiO 2 and Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts, synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation, showed significant sintering and carbon deposition after use. Under identical support conditions, Ni@SiO 2 reduced the initial reaction temperature for toluene steam reforming from 462 °C to 418 °C. Increasing the Ni loading significantly enhanced the number of active sites, decreased the size of the SiO 2 microspheres, and thinned the SiO 2 shell layer, thereby elevating the toluene conversion from 72 % to 100 %. Both temperature and the GHSV (gas hourly space velocity) had a significant impact on catalytic performance, with conversion rates stabilizing at 700 °C and an GHSV = 24500 h −1 . The yolk-shell structure of Ni@SiO 2 promoted high Ni dispersion, reducing aggregation and carbon deposition, which were key to its high activity and stability. These findings are crucial for the development of catalysts for biomass tar reforming.

Efficient tar conversion is essential for reliable biomass gasification and downstream hydrogen production. Yolk–shell catalysts, which confine active metals within an inert shell, show strong resistance to sintering and carbon deposition during tar reforming, but their catalytic efficiency still requires improvement. In this work, promoter-modified yolk–shell Ni@SiO 2 catalysts incorporating Zr, Ce, and Fe were developed for the steam reforming of toluene as a model tar compound. Among the promoters, Ce showed the most significant enhancement, achieving 100% toluene conversion at 650 °C and a steam-to-carbon ratio of 2, with stable performance maintained for 60 h of continuous operation, outperforming the Fe- and Zr-doped catalysts. Mechanistic studies showed that Ce promotion enhanced both activity and stability. TPD-MS results suggested that the introduction of Ce increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies, which promoted H 2 O adsorption on Ce-related sites while preserving metallic Ni sites for toluene activation. Meanwhile, the cracking and reforming temperatures decreased from 315 °C and 398 °C to 220 °C and 262 °C, respectively. In situ DRIFTS identified benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and maleic acid as key surface intermediates. These results demonstrate that combining yolk–shell confinement with Ce-induced oxygen vacancy engineering is an effective strategy for stable tar reforming.

Funneling complex lignocellulose into simple and valuable building blocks has garnered significant interest in the field of biorefinery as a competitor to the petrochemical industry. Reductive Catalytic Fractionation (RCF) of lignocellulose, an innovative biorefinery technology, provides a promising strategy for complete valorization of lignocellulose into various valuable chemicals. In this study, integrated processes utilizing RCF strategies were developed to achieve complete conversion of lignocellulose into various simple and valuable platform chemicals. The core of this system is the flexible use of commercial Ni catalysts including Raney Ni and Ni/SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 which brings great benefits for future upscale and industrial applications. Surprisingly, both monomers derived from lignin and high molecular weight fractions could be converted to 4-ethylcyclohexanol while carbohydrate pulp was converted to furfural and 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) in one-pot. MMF could be further upgraded to 2,5-Furandicarboxylicacid (FDCA) via catalytic oxidation by Ru/C catalysts. This work could inspire the development of more sustainable and economically viable biorefinery processes.

It is extraordinarily exigent to solve the efficiency of 6H+/6e− photoreduction of CO2 and H2O into methanol as the major product, which is limited by the severe photogenerated carrier recombination, the reoxidation of methanol at high temperature, and photocorrosion of catalysts. Herein, we developed an elaborate gas–liquid–solid system assembled by using a novel multicomponent SrTiO3 (La Cr)/Cu@Ni/SiO2/TiN (STO/Cu@Ni/SiO2/TiN) heterojunction, realizing a highly efficient and robust photocatalytic CO2 reduction to methanol at low temperature. STO/Cu@Ni/SiO2/TiN exhibits excellent light absorption and high charge carriers separation nature, and the evolution of methanol is 25.8 μmol (h gcat.)−1 roughly not only 173 folds higher than those observed compared with the STO counterpart, but also is 50 times that those of traditional gas–solid two-phase system. Of note, these improved performances are attributed to the enhancement of the local surface plasmonic resonance of Cu@Ni nanoparticles by changing the local medium dielectric constant and prolonged carrier's lifetime originating from heterostructure. Moreover, plasmonic TiN nanoparticles play an important role in remaining the triphase interfacial system temperature at 90 °C and increasing methanol production excellently. While, the ionic liquid in the gas–liquid–solid system can activate CO2 molecules, thereby greatly improves the yield of methanol. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and 13C isotope labeling tests reveal the reaction path of CO2 on the photocatalyst surface. This work may provide a new direction for the efficient photoreduction of CO2 to methanol.
