Synergistic oxygen plasma and variable-valence metal (Ni/Mn) doping strategy engineering enhanced low-temperature H2S sensing mechanism in In2O3 nanotubes

Yuchen Jiang,Jiaru Yang,Linlin Dong,Xiaolian Liu,Lanlan Guo,Yingli Yang,Jianliang Cao,Yan Wang,Guodong Wang

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), as a highly toxic gas, poses severe threats to human health when its concentration exceeds safety thresholds. Therefore, it is crucial to develop H 2 S sensors with high response, excellent selectivity and fast response characteristics. In this work, we successfully synthesized In 2 O 3 -based nanotubes through a synergistic strategy combining variable-valence metal ion doping (Ni, Mn) and oxygen plasma treatment, achieving ultra-sensitive H 2 S detection at a low operating temperature of 75°C. Remarkably, the oxygen plasma-treated Ni-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes (denoted as Ni-In 2 O 3 -plasma) exhibited outstanding sensing performance to 5 H 2 S gas: An unprecedented response value of 6601.4, a low detection limit of 100 ppb and superior anti-interference selectivity. Moreover, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) proves the possible products in the gas-sensing reactions. Mechanistic investigations through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the enhanced performance is mainly attributed to the two synergistic effects of abundant oxygen vacancies and high Ni 3 + /Ni 2⁺ ratio in the composite materials. This study provides an efficient and controllable optimization strategy for the development of high-performance metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based H 2 S sensors.

Fabrication of a novel nanohybrid via the introduction of Ni/Mn-LDH into Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs for high-performance electrochemical supercapacitor

Tian-Li Meng,Jia-Wei Wang,Ying-Xia Ma,Xin-Quan Chen,Lei Lei,Jing Li,Fen Ran

Layered double hydroxide (LDH), as an electrode material, consists of positively charged layers and interlayer hydrated anions and is endowed with promising prospects in supercapacitors (SCs) due to its large specific surface area, tunable metal ions, abundant redox active sites, and low cost. Moreover, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit adjustable pore sizes, while multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) boast exceptional electrical conductivity. Hence, in this work, flower-like nickel/manganese layered double hydroxide (Ni/Mn-LDH) was introduced into nanohybrid of MWCNTs decorated with nickel metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs) to fabricate a novel Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid as electrode material for SCs using a two-step solvothermal method. In the composite structure of the novel Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid, the flower-like assembly of Ni/Mn-LDH nanosheets was seamlessly integrated with MWCNTs adorning the Ni-MOFs, creating an interconnected hierarchical porous network. This distinctive structure, coupled with the synergistic effects of its components, facilitated the swift diffusion of electrolyte ions. Furthermore, it enhanced the accessibility to more active sites at the interfaces during the redox process, thereby contributing considerably to an improved electrochemical performance. The specific capacity of the Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid as electrode material obtained at the optimal experimental conditions was 1151.0C g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 . The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) had an energy density of 25.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 845.3 W kg −1 . The fabrication strategy of the Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH could be extended to synthesize other nanohybrid.

Fluorine-free superhydrophobic Ni/Mn-TiO2 composite coatings on carbon steel via one-step electrodeposition for enhanced durability and corrosion resistance

Zhangyan Zhou,Wenshuo Ma,Mengjin Hong,Beiyue Ma,Chuanbo Hu

The application of superhydrophobic coatings on carbon steel (CS) surface represents an effective strategy for mitigating corrosion in these materials. This study presents the preparation of superhydrophobic Ni/Mn-TiO 2 composite (SNMT) coatings on CS substrates through a facile one-step electrodeposition technique. The formation mechanism of SNMT coatings was meticulously analyzed under varying conditions of nanoparticle types and concentration levels. The inclusion of TiO 2 nanoparticles, with an optimal additive concentration of 1 g, facilitated the formation of numerous low surface energy, cauliflower-like microstructures on CS interface. Surprisingly, the results indicate that SNMT coatings maintained commendable superhydrophobicity even post-exposure to superficial damages such as tape peeling, sandpaper wear, and knife-scratch, as evidenced by a static contact angle (CA) exceeding 158° and a sliding angle (SA) below 2°. Furthermore, the corrosion inhibition efficacy of SNMT coatings was quantitatively assessed via dynamic potential polarization curves in a simulated seawater environment. The results demonstrated that SNMT coatings exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition performance in simulated seawater solution, with a protection efficiency (PE) reaching 96.5 %. In conclusion, superhydrophobic surfaces can effectively inhibit the penetration of corrosive liquids. The durability and robustness of such superhydrophobic surfaces advocate for their potential widespread application in enhancing the longevity and reliability of CS in corrosive environments.

Hierarchical Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4 Nanosheet Arrays-Modified Copper Mesh: A Dual-Functional Material for Enhancing Oil/Water Separation and Supercapacitors

Yue Wu,Guangyuan Lu,Ping Xu,Tian C. Zhang,Huaqiang He,Shaojun Yuan

The pursuit of superhydrophilic materials with hierarchical structures has garnered significant attention across diverse application domains. In this study, we have successfully crafted Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4nanosheet arrays on a copper mesh (CM) through a synergistic process involving chemical oxidation and hydrothermal deposition. Initially, CuC2O4nanosheets were synthesized on the copper mesh, closely followed by the growth of Ni-Mn LDHs nanosheets, culminating in the establishment of a multi-tiered surface architecture with exceptional superhydrophilicity and remarkable underwater superoleophobicity. The resultant Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4CM membrane showcased an unparalleled amalgamation of traits, including superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and the ability to harness photocatalytic forces for self-cleaning actions, making it an advanced oil-water separation membrane. The membrane’s performance was impressive, manifesting in a remarkable water flux range (70 kL·m−2·h−1) and an efficient oil separation capability for both oil/water mixture and surfactant-stabilized emulsions (below 60 ppm). Moreover, the innate superhydrophilic characteristics of the membrane rendered it a prime candidate for deployment as a supercapacitor cathode material. Evidenced by a capacitance of 5080 mF·cm−2at a current density of 6 mA cm−2in a 6 M KOH electrolyte, the membrane’s potential extended beyond oil-water separation. This work not only introduces a cutting-edge oil-water separation membrane and supercapacitor electrode but also offers a promising blueprint for the deliberate engineering of hierarchical structure arrays to cater to a spectrum of related applications. Keywords:superwetting mesh;self-cleaning;oil/water separation;supercapacitors

Highly efficient Ni–Mn/SiO2 catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone under mild conditions

Mengting Chen,Qifeng Zhong,Jiao Ma,Zhiyang Zhang,Yingxin Liu,Zuojun Wei,Shuguang Deng

Hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a key reaction in the conversion of biomass to renewable fuels and value-added chemicals. Developing low-cost, highly efficient and reusable non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts is vital but challenging. Herein, non-noble Ni–Mn/SiO2 catalysts with a low Ni loading (2.0 wt%) were designed for the selective hydrogenation of LA to GVL. The results showed that the optimal Ni–Mn/SiO2 (Ni/Mn = 2) catalyst with well-dispersed and small-sized metal nanoparticles (2.21 nm) and moderate acid sites exhibited excellent activity and selectivity and achieved a 100% yield of GVL in a 1,4-dioxane solvent under mild reaction conditions (e.g., 0.8 mol% Ni, 140 °C and 2.0 MPa H2) for 5.5 h and a 100% GVL yield at 180 °C for 2 h with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 190.2 h−1, which is better than most non-noble metal catalysts reported. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited excellent reusability and could be recycled at least five times with only slight activity loss. This work provides new insights for the rational design of highly efficient and stable non-noble metal catalysts for the conversion of LA to GVL.

A highly sensitive electrochemical sensor based on N-MLG@Ni-Mn LDH/Cys nanocomposite for detection of trace copper ions in sweat

Mei Wang,Lei Yang,Zesheng Wang,Liying Jiang

A novel N-MLG@Ni–Mn LDH/Cys electrode was constructed for Cu²⁺ detection in sweat. • Dual active sites significantly enhance Cu²⁺ adsorption and signal amplification. • The sensor exhibits a wide detection range and a low detection limit for Cu²⁺. • The synergistic effect of N-MLG and Ni–Mn LDH improves electrochemical performance. In this study, a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor based on a N-MLG@Ni-Mn LDH/Cys nanocomposite was fabricated for the detection of trace Cu²⁺ in sweat. Nitrogen-doped multilayer graphene (N-MLG) was electrostatically self-assembled with nickel-manganese layered double hydroxide (Ni-Mn LDH) via their charge complementarity, forming a uniform heterostructure. L -cysteine (Cys) was further introduced as a surface modifier to construct the N-MLG@Ni-Mn LDH/Cys nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensor. Based on the hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory, a synergistic adsorption mechanism involving dual active sites was established, which significantly enhanced the preconcentration efficiency and specific recognition ability toward copper ions. Electrochemical measurements were performed using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). Electrochemical characterization demonstrated that the sensor possesses excellent conductivity and good electrochemical activity. Under optimized experimental conditions, the sensor exhibited outstanding analytical performance. A good linear relationship was obtained for Cu²⁺ in the concentration range of 0.1–500 ppb, with a low detection limit of 0.24 ppb. In addition, the sensor prepared by this method showed good anti-interference capability, repeatability, and long-term stability, and it also performed well in the detection of artificial sweat samples. Overall, these performance advantages provide a feasible technical strategy for noninvasive monitoring of Cu²⁺ in sweat, with broad application prospects. An electrochemical sensing platform was constructed for the sensitive detection of Cu²⁺ in sweat based on an N-MLG@Ni-Mn LDH/Cys composite-modified screen-printed electrode (SPE). The electrostatic self-assembly between negatively charged N-MLG nanosheets and positively charged Ni-Mn LDH laminates leads to a stable intercalated heterostructure with high conductivity and abundant active sites. Subsequent functionalization with L-cysteine introduces sulfhydryl (-SH) groups, enabling specific chelation toward Cu²⁺ and enhancing selectivity. During detection, Cu²⁺ is effectively preconcentrated via the synergistic interactions of hydroxyl (-OH) and sulfhydryl (-SH) groups, followed by electrochemical reduction to Cu⁰ under a negative potential. The deposited Cu⁰ is then oxidized during the stripping process, generating a characteristic current signal proportional to the Cu²⁺ concentration. Combined with SWASV, this dual-active-site strategy achieves high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and reliable analytical performance, demonstrating its effectiveness for trace Cu²⁺ detection in sweat. Research on the doping effects on the microstructure and electrochemical hydrogen storage properties of BaCeO3 with Ni, Mn, Li and Y ions

Zhiyong Yang,Guofang Zhang,Ruiqin Zhang,Lu Bai,Shilong Sun,Yiming Li,Zhuocheng Liu,Feng Hu,Jianyi Xu,Ruihua Guo,Yanghuan Zhang

The BaCe 0.98 M 0.02 O 3 (M = Ce, Y, Li, Mn, Ni) solid solution was successfully synthesized via a combustion method. The microstructure and spectra characteristics were analyzed systemically. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the structures of the BaCeO 3 -based materials kept cubic perovskite single-phase structure. The findings from the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analyses revealed that the doped samples exhibited smaller grain sizes and the doped elements are distributed uniformly. The spectral analyses revealed that the doped samples contain higher contents of oxygen vacancies in the lattices. The electrochemical hydrogen storage characteristics of the samples demonstrated that the doped samples possess greater discharge capacities compared to pure BaCeO 3 . The Y-doped sample demonstrated superior electrochemical performance, delivering a remarkable specific capacity of 377 mA h/g (hydrogen content of 4.56 %) with excellent capacity retention of 371 mA h/g after 50 cycles. Moreover, the incorporation of Y ions not only significantly enhanced the rate capability but also effectively suppressed the self-discharge behavior. The hydrogen storage mechanism was speculated. The characteristics of hydrogen storage are significantly influenced by the lattice parameters, the concentration of oxygen vacancies and defects, as well as the nature of the doped ions.

Effects of the Mn/Ni ratio on the battery performance of layered Na-Ni-Mn oxide cathode materials in sodium-ion batteries

Xiao Qingmei,Guo Ziting,Huang Jinchao,Zhong Shengwen

The development of efficient sodium-ion batteries is essential to overcome the issue of limited lithium sources for preparing lithium-ion batteries. Layered Mn-based cathode materials have significant application potential because of their simple structure and high specific capacities. Serious voltage attenuation and phase transition are the prominent problems of layered manganese-sodium ion batteries. To eliminate these issues, in this study, we investigated the effects of different Mn/Ni ratios in Na-Ni-Mn cathode materials on their structural stability and electrochemical performances. Na 0. 8MnO 2 (NNM-8010), Na 0.8 Ni 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 2 (NNM-819), Na 0.8 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 (NNM-828), and Na 0.8 Ni 0.3 Mn 0.7 O 2 (NNM-837) were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical analyses. The addition of Ni 2+ increased the Mn oxidation state from + 3 to + 4, thus reducing the Jahn–Teller effect of Mn 3+ and stabilizing the material structure. NNM-819 exhibited the best electrochemical performance. Its initial discharge-specific capacity was 198.5mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.2C, and the capacity retention rate after 100 cycles was 86.9% at 0.5C. Moreover, its capacity retention rate at 1.0C high-rate cycling after 100 cycles remained high 81.9%. Graphical Abstract

Synergistic modulation of bulk and interface structures in Ni-Mn-based O3-type cathodes via dual-Y strategy for highly stable sodium-ion batteries

Yuyu Chen,Weiliang Li,Jingyu Zhang,Xiaomin Cheng,Jiaojie Xiao,Kaiwen Zhou,Wenwei Wu,Xuehang Wu

The practical application of O3-type layered oxide cathode materials in sodium-ion batteries is limited by their insufficient structural stability and poor interfacial compatibility, especially under high-voltage operation. In this work, a thin Y 2 O 3 coating is applied to the surface of Na 0.9 Cu 0.12 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.42 Ti 0.13 O 2 (CNMT). During high-temperature annealing, partial diffusion of Y 3+ ions into the CNMT lattice results in an expansion of the interlayer spacing within the sodium layer and a reduction in lattice oxygen vacancies. Owing to the stabilized Y 2 O 3 -modified interface and improved structural integrity, the CNMT modified with 2 wt% Y 2 O 3 (CNMT-2Y) demonstrates superior cycling performance in the voltage range of 2.2–4.3 V. Specifically, in a half-cell configuration, CNMT-2Y delivers an initial discharge capacity of 130.9 mAh g −1 and maintains 94.35 % of its capacity after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 . After being exposed to ambient air for 10 days, the material still retains 89.62 % of its capacity over 100 cycles under the same conditions, significantly outperforming the pristine CNMT (83.54 %). In a full-cell setup with hard carbon (HC) as the anode, CNMT-2Y provides an initial discharge capacity of 119.5 mAh g −1 and retains 77.14 % of its capacity after 150 cycles at 100 mA g −1 within 1.5–4.2 V. This facile dual-modification strategy shows promising potential for promoting the commercialization of O3-type layered oxide cathode materials.

Oxygen loss mitigation and structural stability via synergistic Zr/F dual-doping in O3 type Ni/Mn based layered oxide for sustainable sodium-ion batteries cathodes

Xinwei Xie,Yaoliang Huang,Li Xu,Guangyu Luo,Haifeng Liu,Xinlong Zhang,Jinyue Yang,Junze Lei,Xiaoyuan Yu

O3-type Ni/Mn-based transition metal oxides have garnered significant interest as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacity and abundant resources. However, their commercialization application has been impeded by rapid capacity fading owing to structural degradation, gas evolution, irreversible phase transitions during charge/discharge cycling. Herein, The Zr 4 + /F - dual-doped strategy is developed to boost the Na-storage performance of Ni/Mn-based O3-NaNi 0.3 Fe 0.1 Mn 0.47 Cu 0.1 Zr 0.03 O 2-x F x (NFMCZF-x) layered oxide cathode material prepared by high temperature calcination method. Structural and electrochemical analyses reveal that Zr⁴⁺ doping expands Na⁺-layer spacing and F⁻ doping strengthens transition metal-oxygen bonds. These synergistic effects of Zr 4+ /F - dual-doping is benefit to suppressing O3↔P3 phase transitions, Jahn-Teller distortion and irreversible oxygen redox. Thus, the optimized NFMCZF-0.03 cathode delivers high specific capacity (178 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C) and excellent cycling stability (72 % capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1.0 C). This study establishes dual doping as an effective strategy for developing Ni/Mn-based layered oxide as high-performance cathodes for SIBs.

Yaoliang Huang,Yunru Zhang,Guizhi Yuan,Dingshan Ruan,Xinlong Zhang,Weijian Liu,Zhongshuai Zhang,Xiaoyuan Yu

Ni/Mn-based layered oxides have been widely studied for sodium ion battery cathode because of high capacity and simple preparation. However, its application has been restricted owing to unstable structure and poor cycling performance. Herein, the multi-element doped hexagonal sheet Ni/Mn-based layered oxide with ZrO 2 surface modification O3-NaNi 0.3 Mn 0.5-x Fe 0.1 Cu 0.1 Zr x O 2 @ZrO 2 (NFMCZ-x) cathode materials have been successfully synthesize by high temperature calcination method accompanied by ball milling activation. XRD refinement results show Zr 4+ substitution of Mn 3+ can increase interlayer distance of sodium layer. Benefiting from the synergetic effect of multi-element doping and ZrO 2 surface modification, the optimized NFMCZ-0.03 sample exhibits a higher discharge capacity of 178 mAh/g at 0.1C and good capacity retention (77 % after 50 cycles at 2C). Furthermore, NFMCZ-0.03 has an excellent air stability with a capacity retention rate of 86 % during 50 cycles at 1C after being exposed in the air for 20 days. The ex-situ XRD results of NMFC at different charge/discharge voltages show Zr 4+ doping can suppress O3 + P3′'–O3′-O3 + P3′' phase transition during charge/discharge process. These results confirm that synergistic effect of multi-doping combined with surface modification can improve electrochemical performance of layered oxides cathodes, which provides a research idea for development of Ni/Mn-based layered oxides cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.
