Enhanced Electrochemical Kinetics on Ni2P Polar Mediators Integrated with Graphene for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Junhan Cheng,Song Gao,Dan Zhao,David Rooney,Naiqing Zhang,Kening Sun

Lithium-sulfur batteries have evoked intensive attention caused by the urgent requirement of energy storage devices with higher energy density, long cycle life, and low cost. However, the insulating nature and the soluble reaction intermediate products still hinder its large-scale industry and acceptance by the market. Tremendous efforts focus on the composite of polar material and non-polar material to solve the weaknesses of material insulating nature and soluble reaction intermediate products. However, the linkage form between these two generic materials has been ignored. In this paper, by using typical Ni 2 P as polar material and graphene as non-polar material, the reaction kinetics changes and its intrinsic theories on behavior enhancement have been proved, which construct different binding type between polar and non-polar materials. The Ni 2 P/PrGO delivers an improved high specific capacity of 1254.6 mAh g -1 than Ni 2 P/rGO at 0.2 C. The relevant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy result and the in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests prove that the linkage state between polar and non-polar material has strong influence on the sulfur cathode reaction kinetics. The enhanced reaction kinetics and polar adsorption behavior bring the soft pack battery testing unit over 150 stable cycles with decay ratio of 0.19% for each cycle.

Rational Design of FeCo-S/Ni2P/NF Heterojunction as a Robust Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Pinghua Chen,Yirou Wu,Xuan Guo,Mengxue Wang,Cong Yu,Hualin Jiang,Weiqiang Zhou,Guanghui Wu,Jianan Yan

The rational design of nonnoble-metal-based catalysts with high electroactivity and long-term stability, featuring controllable active sites, remains a significant challenge for achieving effective water electrolysis. Herein, a heterogeneous catalyst with a FeCo-S and Ni2P heterostructure (denoted FeCo-S/Ni2P/NF) grown on nickel foam (NF) was synthesized by a solvothermal method and low-temperature phosphorization. The FeCo-S/Ni2P/NF catalyst shows excellent electrocatalytic performance and stability in alkaline solution. The FeCo-S/Ni2P/NF catalyst demonstrates low overpotentials (η) for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (49 mV@10 mA cm–2) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (279 mV@100 mA cm–2). Assembling the FeCo-S/Ni2P/NF catalyst as both cathode and anode in an electrolytic cell for overall water splitting (OWS) needs an ultralow cell voltage of 1.57 V to attain a current density (CD) of 300 mA cm–2. Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent durability, significantly outperforming the commercial Pt/C∥IrO2 system. The results of experiments indicate that the heterostructure and synergistic effect of FeCo-S and Ni2P can significantly enhance conductivity, facilitate mass/ion transport and gas evolution, and expose more active sites, thereby improving the catalytic activity of the electrocatalyst for the OWS. This study provides a rational approach for the development of commercially promising dual-functional electrocatalysts.

Synergistic design of hierarchical and heterostructural P-NiMoO4@Net-like Ni2P for enhanced hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis

Jian Tang,Jun Fang,Haochen Yao,Jianglong Wei,Geng Gao,Yusong Yang,Bin Yang,Yaochun Yao

Hierarchical structure design and heterostructure engineering are effective strategies for enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, yet their synergistic integration remains underexplored. In this work, a novel hierarchical P-NiMoO 4 @Net-like Ni 2 P heterostructure HER electrocatalyst was prepared via a two-step hydrothermal method followed by low-temperature phosphorization. The three-dimensional net like Ni 2 P was closely integrated with one-dimensional phosphorus-doped NiMoO 4 micro/nanorod arrays, enabling hierarchical structural assembly and the formation of synergistic heterointerfaces. The hierarchical structure significantly increased active site exposure, with a double-layer capacitance of 254.4 mF cm −2 , more than five times that of single-component Ni 2 P (48.4 mF cm −2 ). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the heterostructure lowered the d-band center of active Ni 3 sites and optimized the hydrogen adsorption energy, thereby enhancing HER activity. The P-NiMoO 4 @Net-like Ni 2 P catalyst exhibited an alkaline HER overpotential of 49 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . It also maintained stable operation for 100 h at 10mA cm −2 and 120 h at 100mA cm −2 . This study demonstrates the potential of integrating hierarchical and heterostructural strategies, providing a reference for advanced nanostructured catalyst development.

Biomass carbon dots-assisted Ni2P/NiCo-LDH composites with Co-P electron-bridge for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Tao Wang,Jinyu Wang,Chunlan Li,Yu Wu,Yuxuan Sun,Xiqing Liu,Xiaoli Su,Hongquan Zhan,Yongqing Wang

Carbon materials can act as electron transfer media to effectively enhance photocatalytic performance. In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were prepared using green tea to modify Ni 2 P/NiCo-LDH heterostructures. Benefitting from the Co-P bond formed between Ni 2 P and NiCo-LDH and biomass CDs, charge transfer was improved via dual channel. Ni 2 P and CDs acted as active sites for improving the photocatalytic performance. Owing to the synergistic process, the photoresponse capability of CDs/Ni 2 P/NiCo-LDH was significantly increased. In addition, the possible active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed. This study provides a design for ternary photocatalysts with carbon materials and phosphides.

Nanostructured Ni2P-C as an Efficient Catalyst for Urea Electrooxidation

Dawen Yang,Ying Gu,Xu Yu,Zixia Lin,Huaiguo Xue,Ligang Feng

Graphical Cheap and cheerful : Nanostructured Ni 2 P−C was demonstrated as an efficient catalyst for urea electrooxidation. The material exhibited an excellent catalytic ability and was found to display improved charge-transfer kinetics towards urea electrooxidation. Nickel-based materials are a type of cost-effective catalyst for urea oxidation. Herein, we first reported nanostructured Ni 2 P−C as an efficient catalyst for urea electrooxidation. The Ni 2 P−C catalyst was prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and the structure and morphology were further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The hexagonal crystal structure for Ni 2 P was indicated by the characteristic peaks in the XRD patterns, and lattice fringes of Ni 2 P were clearly observed in the high-resolution TEM images. The catalytic ability for urea electrooxidation was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques. It was found that the current density at 0.5 V was ca. 70.4 mA cm −2 , about 2.7 times higher than that of the referenced commercial nickel oxide catalyst. A good catalytic stability for urea oxidation was also obtained. A diffusion-controlled process was observed for urea oxidation on Ni 2 P catalyst while the active sites arising from Ni(II) ion oxidation was following a surface-redox-reaction-controlled process. Kinetics studies by impedance spectroscopy and Tafel slope analysis displayed improved charge-transfer kinetics towards urea electrooxidation. The results demonstrated that Ni 2 P would have potential applications for catalytic urea oxidation.

One-dimensional Ni2P/Mn2O3 nanostructures with enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity

Bin Yang,Xin Chang,Xinyao Ding,Xinzhi Ma,Mingyi Zhang

Nickel-based transition metal phosphides have been widely flourishing as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts . In this study, a new catalyst Ni 2 P/Mn 2 O 3 nanofibers with the advantages of ultra-high electrochemical active area were successfully synthesized. We explored effective strategies that are constructing one-dimensional nanostructures and composite oxides to promote the electrocatalytic performance of transition metal phosphides. The Ni 2 P/Mn 2 O 3 nanofibers only require a low overpotential of 280 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH for oxygen production. As a result, it is worthily mentioned that the activity of Ni 2 P/Mn 2 O 3 nanofibers is virtually unchanged after 2000 cycles of voltammetry measurements with a stable nanostructure. This research provides a feasible solution for the design and realization of nanostructured electrocatalysts for the enhancing performance of the OER process.

Enhancing phenanthrene hydrogenation via controllable phosphate deposition over Ni2P/Al2O3 catalysts

Jieying Jing,Zhongyuan Guo,Ze Li,Yu Chen,Hao Li,Wen-Ying Li

Ni 2 P/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with phosphate deposition were synthesized by a hypophosphite decomposition method. Benefiting from its spherical structure and special electronic properties derived from the deposited phosphate on the catalyst surface, the Ni-2.5P/Al 2 O 3 catalyst offered remarkable activity and stability towards phenanthrene (PHE) hydrogenation, featuring a high turnover frequency of 44.64 × 10 -3 s −1 . Extensive characterizations revealed that the control of P/Ni molar ratio could change the phosphorus migration pathway and affect the amount of the generated phosphate deposition and then the exposed active sites of Ni 2 P. Density functional theory computations indicated that the deposited phosphate could induce electron transfer from Ni to phosphate, and a certain amount of phosphate deposition can endow Ni with an appropriate electron-deficient state, which can improve the PHE adsorption and result in a facile complete PHE hydrogenation.

Dual-site oxygen activation for enhanced photocatalytic aerobic oxidation by S-scheme Ni2P/Bi3O4Br-OVs heterojunction

Weijie Yang,Kailong Sun,Jun Wan,Yang-Ai Ma,Yu Wang,Lin Liu,Bicheng Zhu,Feng Fu

Solar-driven activation of molecular oxygen (O 2 ) offers an appealing strategy to realize aerobic oxidation catalysis at room temperature, while the efficiency of photocatalytic O 2 activation is severely limited by lacking O 2 adsorption sites and poor carrier utilization. Herein, an efficient Ni 2 P/Bi 3 O 4 Br-OVs heterojunction is firstly proposed to overcome the limitation by the dual-site design of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and on Ni 2 P cocatalyst. By the joint observations from spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations, the introduction of OVs and Ni 2 P on Bi 3 O 4 Br nanosheets can not only optimize the light absorption, facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carrier through the S-scheme mechanism, but also provide active sites for effective adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules, thereby contributing to highly efficient generation of •O 2 − radicals. Benefiting from the more oxidative active species of •O 2 − and h + , the Ni 2 P/Bi 3 O 4 Br-OVs photocatalyst achieves near-unity conversion rate and selectivity in aerobic oxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide, and it also exhibits outstanding photoactivity in the aerobic degradation of phenolic pollutants under visible light. This study showcases a feasible O 2 activation approach by defect and heterojunction engineering, and provides a new perspective for designing high-performance photocatalysts in the field of aerobic oxidation catalysis.

Novel three-dimensional Ni2P-MoS2 heteronanosheet arrays for highly efficient electrochemical overall water splitting

Bo Zhang,Keke Xu,Xiuli Fu,Shundong Guan,Xiaomeng Li,Zhijian Peng

Nowadays, it is still a great challenge to explore highly active and stable noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for sustainable overall water splitting. In this work, a novel electrode of three-dimensional network-like Ni 2 P-MoS 2 heterogeneous nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth (HNSAs/CC) was designed and fabricated by a two-step strategy. Benefiting from the unique 3D hierarchical architecture, large specific surface area, synergistic effects between Ni 2 P and MoS 2 , and the support of highly conductive carbon cloth, the obtained electrode exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) in 1 mol L −1 KOH aqueous solution with extremely low overpotentials of 78 and 258 mV respectively to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The electrocatalytic system assembled with the obtained Ni 2 P-MoS 2 HNSAs/CC sample as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting requires an impressively low onset potential of only 1.574 V to attain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and displays an excellent long-term stability. According to density functional theory calculation, the enhanced water splitting activity could be mainly attributed to the modified interfacial electronic structures and the enhanced thermoneutral adsorption of absorbates on the surface of Ni 2 P (110) – MoS 2 (100) heterostructure . The calculated theoretical overpotentials for HER and OER based on Ni 2 P (110) – MoS 2 (100) heterostructure are 0.019 and 0.279 V, respectively. The facile synthesis method and insights into the HER and OER active interfaces reported here will advance the development of high-performance bifunctional overall water splitting electrocatalysts.

Ruthenium doped Ni2P nanosheet arrays for active hydrogen evolution in neutral and alkaline water

Chengbo Wei,Xiaoming Fan,Xue Deng,Linzheng Ma,Xiao Zhang,Qingyun Liu,Jinxue Guo

Efficiently generating hydrogen in neutral solution is essentially important for electrocatalysts toward practical application of water splitting; however, most of the catalysts show promising activity only in acidic or alkaline media. Herein, a surface modulation method is developed via doping Ru onto the surface of a Ni2P nanosheet array supported on nickel foam (Ru-Ni2P/NF) to activate the robust hydrogen evolution activity. The Ru species achieve optimized surface chemistry for catalysis, including boosted intrinsic activity, improved catalytic center density, and enhanced kinetics. The as-obtained electrode exhibits Pt-like catalytic activity, as well as good stability in both neutral and alkaline solution. Exploring efficient and wide-pH electrocatalysts by such surface chemistry modulation would be of great value for the development of advanced materials for energy conversion.

Developing Schottky high-controductivity Ti3C2TX MXene/Ni2P/NF heterojunction with modulating surface electron density to boost hydrogen evolution reaction

Fangfang Liu,Shan Ji,Xinyu Liu,Zihao Li,Jimei Song,Hao Li,Hui Wang

Nickel-based transition metal electrocatalysts for water electrolysis are promising alternatives to precious metal based electrocatalysts, due to their high activity, low cost, and relatively high stability, offering broad prospects for application in hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Modifying nickel-based transition metal electrocatalysts with phosphorus elements and Schottky heterojunction interfaces can influence the electronic state of the metal, thus enhance the electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst. In this study, a phosphor modified nickel-based electrocatalyst, i.e. MXene/Ni 2 P/NF electrode material was obtained by assembling Ni 2 P nanosheets on a nickel foam (NF) substrate and then depositing MXene nanosheets onto the surface of Ni 2 P/NF via electrophoretic deposition. Water droplets can wet the interior of the electrode material within 150 ms (below the detection limit), demonstrating excellent hydrophilicity, which facilitates the wettability of the electrolyte and the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates. Electrochemical tests revealed that the MXene/Ni 2 P/NF electrode exhibits an overpotential of only 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 83.7 mV dec −1 , in the hydrogen evolution reaction. The overpotential remains virtually unchanged after a 24-h stability test.

High-Performance Evolution of Ni2P@Hierarchical HZSM-5 as the Guaiacol Hydrodeoxygenation Catalyst

Hong Hai Wang,Zhi Ling Liu,Yu Cong Song,Hao Li

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the effective methods to upgrade biomass pyrolysis oil, but the development of a low-cost, high-performance HDO catalyst still faces enormous challenges. In this work, a facile and eco-friendly approach is developed to synthesize the Ni2P@hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst. Structure and acidity of the catalyst can be controlled by simply adjusting the proportions of ammonia solution and the silicon to aluminum ratio, which are closely related to the performance of the catalyst. Experimental results reveal that the Ni2P@hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 85 under NH3·H2O/Ni = 14 exhibits the highest activity of 98% guaiacol conversion, along with a 78.8% yield of cyclohexane (reaction conditions: 300 °C, 3 MPa H2). In addition, the guaiacol reaction network is provided.
