The development of an effective and inexpensive electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key to achieve high hydrogen production since water splitting has sluggish OER kinetics. Herein, a composite of nickel-rich nickel nitride (NR-Ni3N) with graphitic carbon nitrides (GCNs) was prepared for the electrocatalytic OER, showing a low overpotential of ∼290 mV, a small Tafel slope of ∼70 mV dec–1 at 10 mA cm–2 current density, and low loss of activity after 36 h of test in an alkaline electrolyte, outperforming the pure Ni3N and even the noble catalyst RuO2. The characterization results revealed that the defective GCNs can promote the generation of a Ni-rich region in Ni3N in the nitridation process, and the high conductivity of the formed robust Ni–Ni3N heterojunction and its strong synergistic effect with GCNs explain the excellent OER electrocatalytic performances of NR-Ni3N/GCNs. This work provides a novel feasible strategy for the development of highly active OER electrocatalysts.

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) represents the largest-scale green hydrogen production technology, but faces critical challenges: commercial Raney nickel electrodes exhibit insufficient catalytic activity, severe dissolution during intermittent renewable operations, and require energy-intensive fabrication processes. Here, we develop Ni 3 N/Ni heterostructured electrodes with enhanced adhesion and optimized morphology through induction heating and ammonia reduction. The electrodes demonstrate superior energy conversion performance with uniform morphology, enhanced hydrophilicity, and optimized gas management, resulting in enlarged electrochemical active surface area and reduced hydrogen evolution overpotential (η 100 = 141 mV). Single-cell evaluation reveals a current density of 585 mA/cm 2 at 1.8 V with operational stability exceeding 1500 h. Critically, nitridation enhances both catalytic activity and corrosion resistance, enabling reliable operation during frequent start-stop cycles. These findings address critical challenges in AWE and facilitate efficient integration between renewable energy and green hydrogen production.

Lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries are hindered by the sluggish electrochemical kinetics and poor reversibility of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), which limits their practical energy density and cycle life. In order to address this issue, a novel Ni3N/Nb4N5heterostructure was synthesized via electrospinning and nitridation as a functional coating for polypropylene (PP) separators. Adsorption experiments were conducted in order to ascertain the heterostructure’s superior affinity for LiPSs, thereby effectively mitigating their shuttling. Studies of Li2S nucleation demonstrated the catalytic role of the substance in accelerating the deposition kinetics of Li2S. Consequently, Li-S cells that employed the Ni3N/Nb4N5-modified separator were found to achieve significantly enhanced electrochemical performance, with the cells delivering an initial discharge capacity of 1294.4 mAh g−1at 0.2 C. The results demonstrate that, after 150 cycles, the cells retained a discharge capacity of 796.2 mAh g−1, corresponding to a low capacity decay rate of only 0.25% per cycle. In addition, the rate capability of the cells was found to be improved in comparison to control cells with NiNb2O6-modified or pristine separators.

Alkaline H 2 -O 2 fuel cells and water electrolysis are crucial for hydrogen energy recycling. However, the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline medium pose significant obstacles. Thus, it is imperative but challenging to develop highly efficient and stable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for alkaline HOR and HER. Here, we present the intriguing synthesis of well-defined Ni 3 N nanoparticles armored within an N-doped hollow carbon nanotube shell (Ni 3 N@NC) via the conversion of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) to metal-organic framework (MOF), followed by high-temperature pyrolysis. As-developed Ni 3 N@NC demonstrates exceptional bifunctionality in alkaline HOR/HER electrocatalysis , with a high HOR limiting current density of 2.67 mA cm − 2 comparable to the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C, while achieving a lead in overpotential of 145 mV and stronger CO-tolerance. Additionally, it achieves a low overpotential of 21 mV to attain a HER current density of 10 mA cm − 2 with long-term stability up to 340 h, both exceeding those of Pt/C. Structural analyses and electrochemical studies reveal that the remarkable bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalytic performance of Ni 3 N@NC can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling among the well-dispersed small-sized Ni 3 N nanoparticles , chain-mail structure, and optimized electronic structure enabled by strong metal-support interaction. Furthermore, theoretical calculations indicate that the high-efficiency HOR/HER observed in Ni 3 N@NC is attributed to the strong OH − affinity, moderate H adsorption, and enhanced water formation/dissociation ability of the Ni 3 N active sites. This work underscores the significance of rational structural design in enhancing performance and inspires further development of advanced nanostructures for efficient hydrogen electrocatalysis .

Low-cost, efficient and stable electrocatalysts are required for large-scale production of hydrogen by industrial scale water electrolysis. We report here a hybrid bifunctional electrocatalyst, composed of amorphous NiFe LDH nanosheets and metallic Ni3N microsheet arrays grown on Ni foam for water splitting in alkaline electrolyte. This electrocatalyst possesses a typical 3D hierarchical heterostructure architecture and affords abundant exposed active sites. The strong coupling and synergistic effects between the NiFe LDH nanosheets and the Ni3N microsheet arrays provide a robust integrated structure and fast electron transfer. The superhydrophilic/superaerophobic properties of the electrocatalyst promote the mass transfer particularly at a large current density. By employing the NiFe LDH@Ni3N/NF as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, an alkaline aqueous electrolyzer exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.80 V at a current density of 500 mA cm−2 with a remarkable durability of 100 h. The bifunctional NiFe LDH@Ni3N/NF electrocatalyst is a very promising candidate for scale-up industrial implementation of hydrogen production due to its excellent catalysis activity and high stability.

Developing the efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of the great importance for the production of H 2 . The popular bi-functional catalysts usually shown good activity for one half reaction at expense of the activity for another half-reaction, thus given a moderate performance for overall water splitting. In this paper, we have reported on integrating the active OER (Ni 3 N) and HER (NiMoN) components as Ni 3 N-NiMoN heterostructures for the effective overall water splitting. The heterostructures were constructed by the controllable nitridation of the Ni-Mo-O precursor anchored on carbon cloth (CC) under NH 3 atmosphere. The micro-structures of the catalyst could be tuned by regulating the surface properties of CC and the calcination temperature. Under optimized condition, the Ni 3 N-NiMoN catalysts exhibited good catalytic activity for both OER and HER in alkaline electrolyte . The catalysts can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 31 mV for HER, being close to Pt catalyst. Also, it only requiring an overpotential of 277 mV to reach current density of 10 mA cm −2 for OER. Moreover, the cell assembled by the identical Ni 3 N-NiMoN as both the cathode and anode needs only a cell voltage of 1.54 V to achieve current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The superior performance of Ni 3 N-NiMoN heterostructures can be ascribed to the following points: 1) the simultaneous presence of active OER and HER components and the promoted action each other in the heterostructures, and 2) the exposure of the abundant active sites in the sheet-like structure assembled by the nanoparticles .

Exploiting highly efficient oxygen-evolving electrocatalysts is crucial for hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis. Here, a hierarchical structure of boron-doped (Ni,Fe)OOH grown on Ni 3 N nanosheets supported on nickel foam [denoted as B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF] is fabricated. Benefiting from the formation of abundant active sites and the reduced free energy barrier of the rate-determining step caused by B doping, the obtained B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF exhibits extraordinary electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction, requiring overpotentials of only 283 mV and 309 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline pure water and seawater media, respectively, as well as superior stability. When driven by a commercial Si solar cell, the electrolyzer using B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF as the anode and a previously reported Ru/(Fe,Ni)(OH) 2 /NF as the cathode can achieve a high current of over 1000 mA in alkaline seawater media. This shows the great potential in applying a photovoltaic-driven electrolyzer toward large-scale hydrogen production in seawater electrolysis.

It is of great importance to design and exploit high-efficiency low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under mild conditions for applications. In this Article, we propose that formation of a thin amorphous Ni carbonate layer on Ni 3 N nanoarray supported on carbon cloth (Ni 3 N NA/CC) is an effective strategy to boost its OER activity in at near-neutral pH. When used as a 3D non-noble-metal OER electrocatalyst, the resulting core–shell Ni 3 N@Ni-Ci NA/CC displays superior catalytic activity with extremely small overpotential of 400 mV for 20 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KHCO 3 (bulk pH: 8.3). Moreover, it also exhibits considerable long-term electrochemical durability with its activity being preserved for at least 12 h. Conductive Ni 3 N nanoarray not only provides as the Ni source for in-situ electrochemical derivation of 3D Ni-Ci catalyst with high surface area, more exposed active sites and facilitated mass diffusion, but effectively prompts the electron transport from Ni-Ci shell to CC, enabling more efficient water oxidation electrocatalysis.

Herein, we successfully dispersed nickel nitride nanosheets (Ni 3 N NSs) on various carbon matrices (i.e. graphene, macroporous carbon, carbon nanotube and hollow carbon fiber) through nitridation treatment of precursors. Characterization results demonstrated that Ni 3 N-PCF (hollow and porous carbon fiber) owned the 3D hollow and tubular architecture, abundant meso/macropores and large BET surface area compared with other control samples. Ni 3 N-PCF exhibit the best H 2 O 2 and glucose detection abilities than another four samples because of the synergistic effect of metallic character of Ni 3 N , excellent electroconductibility of PCF and structural advantages of hierarchically meso/macroporous architectures. It afforded wide linear ranges (from 0.001 to 2.08 mM and 2.08–50.50 mM) and large sensitivity values (51.81 and 38.32 uA cm −2 mM −1 ) for H 2 O 2 detection. Furthermore, it also displayed wide linear ranges (0.001–1.75 mM and 1.75–9.18 mM), large sensitivity values (1620.31 and 856.40 uA cm −2 mM −1 ) and a small response time (1.7 s) toward glucose detection. In addition, Ni 3 N-PCF can be used for detecting glucose concentrations in blood serums with satisfying results. Ni 3 N-PCF also revealed good reproducibility, good stability, and superior selectivity toward either H 2 O 2 or glucose detection. This work opens new approach for boosting electroanalysis abilities of Ni based materials.
