Fabrication of efficient photocatalysts with great visible light utilization ability, rapid carriers’ separation, and suitable redox potential is essential for improving photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Herein, flower-like microspheres Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 /NiAl-layered double hydroxide (BSO/LDH) heterojunctions were prepared by hydrothermal process for CO 2 reduction. The Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 nanoparticles were dispersed on NiAl-LDH nanosheets, with tight contact interface, which facilitated charges transfer and exposing more catalytic active sites. Results of photochemical deposition of metal/metal oxide demonstrated that interfacial charges transfer of the BSO/LDH followed Z-scheme mechanism, endowing more desired redox potential and more efficient carriers separation. The 30%-BSO/LDH showed the highest CO and CH 4 yields of 37.91 and 1.18 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation, 3.4 and 2.0 times higher than those from the NiAl-LDH, respectively. The main intermediates during CO 2 reduction were carboxylate (COOH*) and aldehyde group (CHO*), and CO 2 reduction pathways and mechanism were proposed accordingly. This study provided referential strategy for designing efficient heterojunction photocatalysts for CO 2 conversion.

S-type heterojunction is a new type of photocatalytic heterojunction that can efficiently enhance the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen-producing. In this paper, NiAl-LDH/P-MoO 3 composite catalysts were prepared, NiAl-LDH, P-MoO 3 and NiAl-LDH/P-MoO 3 were characterized, tested and analyzed from the aspects of morphology, structure and spectrum. The 5 h hydrogen-producing amount of NiAl-LDH/P-MoO 3 reaches 298.72 μmol, which is 160 times and 16 times that of MoO 3 and NiAl-LDH under the visible light , respectively. The doping of P narrows the band gap of MoO 3 and is more helpful to the electronic transmission. The irregular P-MoO 3 nanorods with a diameter of about 200 nm are attached to 3-4 μml NiAl-LDH nanoflower . The construction of S-type heterojunction changes the electronic transmission pathway of NiAl-LDH/P-MoO 3 while improving the electron-hole pair separation ratio of NiAl-LDH/P-MoO 3 . The strong oxidizing ability of P-MoO 3 and the strong reducing ability of NiAl-LDH are retained. Effective control of electronic transmission path improves the photocatalytic hydrogen-producing activity and stability of NiAl-LDH/P-MoO 3 , which provides a certain theoretical support for the realization of photocatalytic high-efficiency HER by constructing heterojunction.

The contamination of water by soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) requires the development of highly active and stable treatment materials. This study presents a rational design for a heterostructured photocatalyst by coupling phosphorus-modified graphitic carbon nitride (PCN) with NiAl-layered double hydroxide (NiAl-LDH). The structural theory was that P-doping would tailor the optoelectronic properties of g-C₃N₄, while integration with NiAl-LDH would establish a synergistic system for concurrent adsorption and photoreduction. As anticipated, the P modification inhibited crystal growth and improved charge separation in g-C₃N₄, elevating its U(VI) reduction rate by 3.67-fold. The NiAl-LDH component provided a high-specific-surface-area substrate for pollutant enrichment. The resulting optimal NiAl-LDH/PCN composite formed a Type-II heterojunction, which directed efficient charge transfer between the two phases. Under simulated sunlight, the composite achieved high removal efficiencies of 96.0% for U(VI) and 95.2% for Cr(VI). The performance stems from a synergy where NiAl-LDH concentrates target ions at the interface, and PCN furnishes photogenerated electrons via facilitated charge transfer, thereby accelerating the photoreduction kinetics. The material also demonstrated robust reusability and effectiveness in treating actual wastewater, highlighting its strong potential for practical heavy-metal-ion remediation.

Developing efficient, stable, and low-cost photocatalysts for solar-driven CO 2 conversion is of great significance for sustainable energy. A flower-like NiAl-LDH structure with a particle size of about 3.0 μm, loaded with TiO 2 nanoparticles, is hydrothermally grown into a porous aerogel featuring an S-scheme heterojunction and an average pore diameter of approximately 13.0 nm. Under full-spectrum irradiation and without any CO-catalysts, the optimized aerogel achieves remarkably high CH 4 and CO production rates of 9.45 and 13.67 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , representing 2.19- and 5.04-fold enhancements over pristine TiO 2 , respectively, along with excellent long-term cyclic stability. UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical analysis clearly reveal that the S-scheme heterojunction enhances visible-light absorption and significantly prolongs the photogenerated carrier lifetime from 1.46 ns to 3.02 ns. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that compared to TiO 2 , NiAl-LDH exhibits a stronger CO 2 adsorption energy of −1.28 eV and induces significant structural deformation in the adsorbed CO 2 molecule. Band structure, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy consistently verify that before illumination, electrons spontaneously transfer from NiAl-LDH to TiO 2 , establishing a built-in electric field and inducing interfacial band bending. Upon illumination, this built-in field drives photogenerated electrons to transfer directionally from the conduction band of TiO 2 to the valence band of NiAl-LDH for recombination, thereby enabling efficient spatial charge separation and preserving high redox potentials. In situ infrared spectroscopy further reveals the CO 2 photoreduction pathway, thus supporting the proposed S-scheme-based multi-electron reduction mechanism for efficient solar fuel production

Developing an efficient and highly catalytic cathode is crucial to the advancement of rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries for utilizing their high theoretical energy density. However, due to the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen-involved reactions, the problems of short lifespan and large overpotential prevent their widely practical applications. Thus, cathodes are designed to enhance the adsorption capacity for oxygen and modulate the electron mobility for Li-O 2 batteries. Herein, NiAl layered double hydroxide (LDH)@Cu 2 S heterostructure with extremely large specific surface area and numerous exposed active sites is designed, combining snowflake-shaped Cu 2 S and dispersed two-dimensional layered NiAl LDH. Excitingly, NiAl LDH@Cu 2 S cathode exhibited a large specific discharge capacity of 14,519 mAh g -1 at a current density of 100 mA g -1 and prolonged cycle life up to 275 cycles at 300 mA g -1 with a cut-off capacity of 600 mAh g -1 , accompanied by a low discharge overpotential of 0.14 V at the first cycle. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the excellent electrochemical performance stems from the optimized adsorption energy of the NiAl LDH@Cu 2 S structure for reactants and intermediate products, which reduces the energy barrier of discharge/recharge process. Therefore, benefited from the modulation of electron mobility and the promoted adsorption of oxygen, NiAl LDH@Cu 2 S heterojunction can display remarkable cycle stability and reversibility as the cathode catalyst, suggesting great application prospects for enhanced Li-O 2 batteries.
