Fabrication of Ni/NiFe-LDH Core–Shell Schottky Heterojunction as Ultrastable Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Ampere-Level Current Density Water Splitting

Junzhi Liao,Mengyao Xue,Yuankang Bao,Zhengtao Wu,Hao Zhang,Ping Li,Xun Xu,Shuwang Duo

The practical application of NiFe-based materials as high-performance water splitting electrocatalysts is severity restricted by their inferior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and long-term stability under large current density. Herein, we report a three-dimensional core–shell Ni/NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) Schottky heterojunction on iron foam (Ni/NiFe-LDH/IF) electrode, in which a Ni metal nano-layer was directly deposited on the NiFe-LDH support grown in situ on commercial IF. Such an assembly enhanced the interfacial strength of the Ni/NiFe-LDH/IF electrode, promoted electron transfer and increased the adsorption energy of OH– as proved by density functional theory calculations. Consequently, the ultralow overpotentials (η) of 56 and 277 mV for HER and 140 and 330 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) resulted in the current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm–2, respectively. The fabricated Ni/NiFe-LDH/IF two-electrode electrolyzer exhibited excellent water splitting characteristics, which produced the current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm–2 at cell voltage of only 1.49 and 1.87 V, versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively, which exceeded that of a commercial Pt/C||RuO2 catalyst. Moreover, the Ni/NiFe-LDH/IF electrolyzer demonstrated extremely high stability at 1000 mA cm–2 without a significant decay for more than 1500 h in a 1 M KOH solution and for 250 h at 60 °C in a 6 M KOH solution. This study proposes a scalable and extendable strategy for designing highly efficient and ultrastable electrocatalysts for hydrogen production at an ampere-level current density.

Constructing Hierarchical Fluffy CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH Nanorod Arrays for Highly Effective Overall Water Splitting and Urea Electrolysis

Baojin Chen,Muhammad Humayun,Yadong Li,Huaming Zhang,Huachuan Sun,Ying Wu,Chundong Wang

Exploration of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for optimal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been widely carried out, though it still remains a big challenge. Herein, a hierarchical CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH (layered-double-hydroxides) heterostructure electrode anchored on nickel foam (NF) is prepared via a developed three-step hydrothermal–nitridation–electrodeposition pathway. The fabricated CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH/NF electrode needs low overpotential values of 66 and 231 mV to supply a current density value of 10 mA cm–2 in aqueous solution of KOH (1 M) for HER and OER, respectively. The Tafel slopes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results display favorable reaction kinetics throughout the electrolysis process. Subsequently, an alkaline electrolyzer is assembled with CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH/NF, which serves both as the anode and cathode, yielding 10 mA cm–2 with a small voltage of 1.529 V and showing a robust stability for 28 h. Impressively, a urine-mediated electrolysis cell shows efficient catalytic activity as well, allowing to mount the sluggish OER during water splitting. To drive the urine-mediated electrolysis cell containing 0.33 M urea, a low voltage of 1.393 V is required, which is about 136 mV lower compared to the urea-free electrolysis cell. This work presents a solid step for the electrocatalytic generation of hydrogen through water splitting by harvesting low energy.

Nickel foam supported Mn-doped NiFe-LDH nanosheet arrays as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation and hydrogen evolution

Yi Ma,Luming Li,Yong Zhang,Ning Jian,Huiyan Pan,Jie Deng,Junshan Li

Electrochemical upgrading methanol into value-added formate at the anode in alkaline media enables the boosting production of hydrogen fuel at the cathode with saved energy. To achieve such a cost-effective and efficient electrocatalytic process, herein this work presents a Mn-doped nickel iron layered double hydroxides supported on nickel foam, derived from a simple hydrothermal synthesis. This developed electrocatalyst could act as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for methanol-to-formate with a high faradaic efficiency of nearly 100 %, and for hydrogen evolution reaction, at an external potential of 1.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Additionally, a current density of 131.1 mA cm −2 with a decay of merely 12.2 % over 120 h continuous long-term testing was generated in co-electrocatalysis of water/methanol solution. Further density functional theoretical calculations were used to unravel the methanol-to-formate reaction mechanism arising from the doping of Fe and/or Mn. This work offers a good example of co-electrocatalysis to produce formate and green hydrogen fuel using a bifunctional electrocatalyst.

Vacancies-Riched composite of ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets on the etched Prussian blue analogue: An efficient alkaline oxygen evolution electrocatalyst

Chao Wang,Luna Chen,Xinyue Xu,Yajie Liu,Yiao Song,Lingbo Zong,Xingwei Li,Guanjun Chen,Tianrong Zhan

Oxygen vacancy can significantly improve the intrinsic activities of electrocatalysts towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Besides, the 3D hierarchical structure can release more active sites and optimize the adsorption/desorption energy of ∗OOH, ∗O, and ∗OH intermediates during the electrocatalytic process. In this study, the 3D heterostructure of NiFe-layered double hydroxides@etched Prussian blue analogue (NiFe-LDH@E-PBA) is prepared on nickel foam by electrodeposition and alkali etching processes. The alkali etching and the electrodeposition endow NiFe-LDH@E-PBA with abundant oxygen vacancies and plentiful active sites. The synergistic effect between NiFe-LDH and E-PBA offers efficient charge and mass transfer. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the interfacial electron transfer is conducive to the adsorption of OER intermediates. Hence, the catalyst displays outstanding electrocatalytic OER performance with a low overpotential of 263 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 34.78 mV dec −1 , and robust durability with a stable operation over 50 h at 100 mA cm −2 . NiFe-LDH@E-PBA also demonstrates excellent alkaline overall water-splitting performance by acting as both the anode and the cathode. The cell voltages at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 are 1.65 and 1.80 V, respectively. This work offers a novel approach for the fabrication of a 3D heterostructure with rich vacancies to enhance the electrocatalytic activity.

The in situ derivation of a NiFe-LDH ultra-thin layer on Ni-BDC nanosheets as a boosted electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction

Qibing Dong,Chao Shuai,Zunli Mo,Ruibin Guo,Nijuan Liu,Guigui Liu,Jia Wang,Wentong Liu,Ying Chen,Jingjing Liu,Yangyang Jiang,Qinqin Gao

A Ni-based metal organic framework (Ni-BDC) and subsequently derived NiFe-LDH were studied to overcome the defect of the low availability of active sites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during the water splitting process. This work reported NiFe-LDH nanosheets with an ultra-thin structure through an in situ surface-conversion derived from Ni-BDC. The unique structure and characteristic morphology were confirmed using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, and the OER activities of the catalysts were systematically studied. The obtained results indicated that the synthesized Ni-BDC@NiFe-LDH-2 showed excellent OER activity, with a low overpotential of 272 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 45 mV dec−1, and excellent stability, owing to the addition of abundant metal sites and the expansion of the electron transport channels during the conversion process to form the ultra-thin layer structure. This work provides a novel strategy for the application, design, and manufacture of metal organic framework (MOF)-based high-efficiency active materials.

An efficient solution based on the synergistic effects of nickel foam in NiFe-LDH nanosheets for oil/water separation

Xinchun Lu,Liguo Shen,Hongjun Lin,Lei Han,Jiarong Du,Cheng Chen,Jiaheng Teng,Bisheng Li,Wei Yu,Yanchao Xu

Efficient oil-water separation has always been a research hotspot in the field of environmental studies. Employing a one-step hydrothermal approach, NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanosheets were synthesized on nickel foam substrates. The resulting NiFe-LDH/NF membrane exhibited rejection rates exceeding 99% across six diverse oil-water mixtures, concurrently demonstrating a remarkable ultra-high flux of 1.4 × 10 6 L·m −2 ·h −1 . This flux value significantly surpasses those documented in existing literature, maintaining stable performance over 1000 manual filtration cycles. These breakthroughs stem from the synergistic interplay among the three-dimensional channels of the nickel foam, the nanosheets, and the hydration layer. By leveraging the pore size of the foam to enhance the functionality of the hydration layer, the conventional trade-off between permeability and selectivity was transformed into a balanced force relationship between the hydration layer and the oil phase. The operational and failure mechanisms of the hydration layer were examined using the prepared NiFe-LDH/NF membrane, validating the correlation between oil phase viscosity and density with hydration layer rupture. Additionally, an extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory was employed to investigate changes in interaction energy, further reinforcing the study's findings. This research contributes novel insights and assistance to the comprehension and application of hydration layers in other membrane studies dedicated to oil-water separation.

Synthesis of Pt-Loaded NiFe-LDH Nanosheets on Wood Veneer for Efficient Gaseous Formaldehyde Degradation

Tailong Cai,Ping Zhang,Xiaoyuan Shen,Erzhuo Huang,Xiaoping Shen,Jiangtao Shi,Zhe Wang,Qingfeng Sun

Traditional methods of removing gaseous formaldehyde are often associated with high energy consumption and secondary pollution. In this study, a new wood veneer-based composite decorated with Pt-loaded NiFe-LDH nanosheets is successfully developed by a hydrothermal reaction and impregnation-chemical reduction. NiFe-LDH nanosheets as an adsorbent can capture formaldehyde molecules through their abundant hydroxyl groups. Pt nanoparticles as catalytic centers are evenly distributed on the surface of NiFe-LDH to excite the O atoms linked to NiFe-LDH and absorbed oxygen, which will further attack the absorbed formaldehyde molecules to generate CO2 and H2O. And the wood veneer not only increases the active area of the catalyst by endowing it with good dispersion but also provides convenient channels for reactants and products. In a simulated dark environment at room temperature, this synthetic wood veneer-based composite exhibits admirable catalytic activity, which can effectively degrade almost all gaseous formaldehyde with the initial concentration of 0.2 mg m–3 in 30 min and maintain a high catalytic activity of ≥97% after 10 cycles. This paper presents a feasible strategy for synthesizing an energy-efficient and ecofriendly wood veneer-based composite for efficient gaseous formaldehyde degradation at room temperature, which may play an important role in indoor air purification as a promising decorative material.

Construction of Hierarchical NiCoP@NiFe-LDH Nanoflakes Heterostructure for High Energy Asymmetric Supercapacitor

Xinlei Wei,Shaoxing Su,Qingcheng Zhang

Graphical High energy supercapacitors : NiCoP@NiFe-LDH nanoflakes array has been grown on nickel foam as the binder-free electrode for supercapacitor, which delivers a high specific capacitance of 2216 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and good rate capability of 1038 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 , as well as a high energy density of 57.4 W h kg −1 and good cycling stability in asymmetric supercapacitor device. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are attractive electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical capacitances and adjustable compositions, but also subjected to their intrinsic poor electrical conductivity and easy structure collapse properties. To resolve these intractable issues, LDHs are usually integrated with high conductivity and specific surface areas (SSAs) matrixes. Herein, NiCoP@NiFe-LDH nanoflakes array has been successfully grown on nickel foam by a facile phosphorization and subsequent hydrothermal process. The hierarchical porous structure, large SSA, as well as the strong interfacial reactions between NiFe-LDH and conductive NiCoP layer has enabled NiCoP@NiFe-LDH to deliver quantities of electroactive sites, fast ion diffusion and facile electron transfer, hence remarkably boosting the supercapacitive performance. Therefore, NiCoP@NiFe-LDH electrode has achieved a high specific capacitance of 2216 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and retained 1038 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 , whose specific capacitance and rate capability are much higher than those of NiCoP and NiFe-LDH electrodes. In addition, NiCoP@NiFe-LDH is assembled with an activated carbon electrode to fabricate an asymmetric supercapacitor, which displays a high energy density of 57.4 W h kg −1 and good cycling stability with 88.2 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Therefore, the binder-free electrode composed of hierarchical NiCoP@NiFe-LDH nanoflakes array is promising for use in energy storage.

Efficient Bifunctional NiFe-LDH@Co9S8 Nanoflower Electrocatalysts Anchored with Pt Nanocrystal for Flexible Quasi-solid Rechargeable Zinc Air Battery

Jiongyu Chen,Zhi Liu,Yuchen Liu,Zhen Cheng,Jingze Zhang,Qinghong Zhang,Yaogang Li,Chengyi Hou,Kerui Li,Hongzhi Wang

Efficient and affordable electrocatalysts are a crucial part of rechargeable zinc air batteries (ZAB) to address the problems caused by the sluggish activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the cathode. Anchoring noble metals on transition-metal-based substances is a promising strategy to reinforce electrochemical activity and reduce the cost. Herein, we have developed a subsequent spontaneous-redox strategy to load Pt nanoparticles with 3.75% containing NiFe-LDH nanoflakes to boost the ORR activity. After that, NiFe-LDH@ Co9S8 is constructed as a rational design for bifunction catalysis. In the ORR process, the half-wave potential of the obtained catalyst, Pt-anchored NiFe-LDH@Co9S8, is 0.83 V vs RHE, showing better catalytic activity than Pt/C. In the OER process, the obtained catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 280 mV, which is superior to that of RuO2. Notably, aqueous ZAB and quasi-solid-state ZAB achieve peak power densities of 164.3 and 78.4 mW cm–2, respectively. Furthermore, quasi-solid-state ZAB exhibits a long cycle lifespan for 240 cycles in 80 h, and a remarkable stability after bending for 50 cycles. This work paves the way for the design of the NiFe-LDH nanostructure by vacancy engineering.

Self-sacrificial reconstruction of MoO42− intercalated NiFe LDH/Co2P heterostructures enabling interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies for triggering oxygen evolution reaction

Yonghao Gan,Ying Ye,Xiaoping Dai,Xueli Yin,Yihua Cao,Run Cai,Xin Zhang

Exploring high-efficiency electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most important concerns to produce hydrogen in water electrolysis. Herein, the FNM/Co 2 P-0.4 heterostructure was designed as an electrocatalyst for the OER process by the combination of MoO 4 2− intercalating NiFe LDH and Co 2 P on nickel foam (NF). The surface reconstruction and MoO 4 2− leaching can induce the conversion of Co 2 P and NiFe LDH on FNM/Co 2 P-0.4 to generate Co/NiOOH with more oxygen vacancies. Beyond, CoOOH and NiOOH can also synergize to reduce the energy barrier of OER, optimize conductivity, and improve stability. The surface reconstruction and the formation of OOH ⁎ were further unveiled by in-situ UV–vis absorption spectra and Fourier-transformed alternative current voltammetry ( FTACV). The integration of interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies can facilitate the adsorption/desorption of intermediates, regulate the d-band center, and expose more active sites. And as a result, FNM/Co 2 P-0.4 shows a significant low overpotential (240 mV) at 50 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel (74 mV dec −1 ), low activation energy ( E a ) and remarkable durability. This work provides a new pathway to improve the OER performance by using interfacial synergies and rich oxygen vacancies derived from the self-sacrificial reconstruction of heterostructured electrocatalysts.

Core-Shell NiO/C@NiFe-LDH Nanocomposite as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xue Li,Mingli Fan,Danan Wei,Xiaolong Wang,Yinling Wang

Highly efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts have been urgently needed for the development of renewable hydrogen energy via water electrolysis. Herein, a core-shell NiO nanoparticles decorated carbon sphere (NiO/C) and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanocomposite (NiO/C@NiFe-LDH) was prepared by a calcination-hydrothermal synthesis approach. In this nanocomposite, NiO/C as the core were derived from Ni based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs), which not only provide a porous and conductive carbon support for NiFe-LDH nanosheets to expose active sites, but also offer a synergistic active site for NiFe-LDH nanosheets. The structure and morphology of NiO/C@NiFe-LDH were mainly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption test. The OER catalytic activity of NiO/C@NiFe-LDH was optimized by adjusting the ratio between NiO/C and NiFe-LDH and adding bridging agents. Under the optimum conditions, the overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 for NiO/C@NiFe-LDHs is only 299 mV(vs RHE), lower than that of commercial RuO2 (330 mV). Besides, the NiO/C@NiFe-LDH exhibits a good stability in 10-hour testing. These results show that the ingenious combination of different OER catalysts may be an effective strategy to prepare low-cost OER catalysts with good performance.

Interlaced rosette-like MoS2/Ni3S2/NiFe-LDH grown on nickel foam: A bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen production by urea-assisted electrolysis

Maoxiao He,Shengnan Hu,Chuanqi Feng,Huimin Wu,Huakun Liu,He Mei

In targeting the most important energy and environmental issues in current society, the development of low-cost, bifunctional electrocatalysts for urea-assisted electrocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production is an urgent and challenging task. In this work, interlaced rosette-like MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-layered double hydroxide/nickel foam (LDH/NF) is successfully synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal reaction . Due to its unique interlaced heterostructure , MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity towards the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea. In a concurrent two-electrode electrolyser (MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF(+,-)), only voltage of 1.343 V is required to reach 50 mA cm −2 , which is 216 mV lower than for pure water splitting. Furthermore, after 16 h of urea electrolysis in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea, the current density remains at 98% of the original value. Thus, the catalyst is not only favorable for H 2 production, but also has great significance for the problem of urea-rich wastewater treatment .
