3D Nanoarrays Induced Compression Strain on Ultra-Thin NiOOH Optimizes H2O Adsorption for Efficient Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Yushan Chen,Zhiwen Cheng,Hongbo Zhang,Jianxing Liang,Jingdong Li,Chenyu Bao,Shuxun Chen,Xi Wu,Zhujun Liu,Jinping Jia,Maohong Fan,Kan Li

The adsorption strength of H 2 O on the catalyst surface is a key factor in electrocatalytic hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). Excessive adsorption increases the energy barrier for intermediate formation, hindering HER/OER activity and stability. Here, a strategy is proposed for modulating lattice strain in 2D materials via 3D substrates. NiOOH/NiCu, a electrocatalyst with 2D film loaded on 3D branches, is synthesized on copper oxide nanowire arrays, and NiOOH compression strain is tuned within 0%–8.6% by controlling array diameter. In situ characterization and density functional theory calculations show that compressing NiOOH interlayer spacing weakens the adsorption of H 2 O and intermediates (*H/*O), lowers the Tafel step energy barrier and Gibbs free energy of *OOH formation, thus improving HER/OER activity. The 5.9% strained NiOOH/NiCu achieves HER and OER overpotentials of 18 and 197 mV at 10 mA cm −2 with Tafel slopes of 30.6 and 35.6 mV dec −1 , respectively, and operates stably at 1 A cm −2 for 1200 h in an alkaline anion-exchange-membrane electrolyzer.

The Critical Role of Ni(III) Species in MOSw@PDA@NiOOH for Effective Smoke Suppression and Flame Retardancy in Flexible Polyvinyl Chloride Composites

Xiaoyuan Liu,Jia Liu,Xinyi Bao,Wenqing Ge,Zhihui Lv,Li Dang

To overcome the critical challenges of high smoke toxicity and flammability in flexible polyvinyl chloride (fPVC), this study developed a core-shell flame retardant (MOSw@PDA@NiOOH) via polydopamine (PDA) interfacial engineering and in-situ NiOOH deposition on magnesium oxysulfate whiskers (MOSw). SEM, TEM, and EDS confirm the hierarchical interface structure with Ni(III)-based NiOOH nanoparticles uniformly anchored on MOSw surfaces. Cone calorimetry tests show a 35.38% reduction in peak smoke production rate and a 75.88% decrease in total smoke production, respectively, for fPVC/MOSw@PDA@NiOOH compared to fPVC/MOSw composite, along with a UL-94 V-0 rating and 28.8% limiting oxygen index. Raman, TGA, and XPS analyses reveal that: i) the strong Lewis acidity of Ni(III) facilitates chloride elimination from PVC, leading to the formation of conjugated polyene structures; ii) the powerful oxidizing capability of Ni(III) directly oxidizes unsaturated carbons such as C=C, generating carbocations that subsequently promote aromatization and cross-linking reactions; iii) Ni(III) induces complete decomposition of MOSw into MgO, ultimately forming a dense carbonaceous residue layer composed of graphitic carbon, MgO, NiO, and MgCl 2 . Py-GC/MS and TGA-FTIR analyses further demonstrate that the strong oxidative capacity of Ni(III) also promotes deep cleavage and oxidation of aromatic/aliphatic intermediates, which significantly reduces the accumulation of smoke precursors. Moreover, both the Ni(III) and its reduced Ni(II) possess partially filled 3d orbitals capable of scavenging gas-phase radicals (e.g., H· and HO·), thereby interrupting combustion chain reactions and imparting flame-retardant efficacy. Additionally, PDA’s amino/hydroxyl groups strengthen the MOSw-PVC interface via hydrogen bonding, increasing tensile modulus (20.9 MPa) and strength (17.8 MPa) while maintaining impact strength (83.9 kJ/m 2 ). This work establishes a multifunctional design strategy that simultaneously achieves flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical reinforcement in fPVC composites through synergistic interfacial and catalytic effects.

NiS2@NiOOH/CNT hybrid as robust catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Zhanyu Ding,Yu Ma,Xuanhao Zhang,Rizwan Haider,Qiqi Jiao,Jiemei Yu,Yanlu Mu,Taizhong Huang,Xianxia Yuan

Development of non-precious metal-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is essential for commercial scale electrochemical water splitting. In this paper, a carbon nanotube (CNT), which can enhance the conductivity of the catalyst, supported nickel sulfide (NiS 2 ) and nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) hybrid (NiS 2 @NiOOH/CNT) based catalyst is prepared. The in-situ conversion of partial NiS 2 to NiOOH not only increased the active catalytic sites but also decreased the OER overpotential to 195 mV at the current intensity of 10 mA/cm 2 . The long-time running stability test results showed that the current density almost no losses detected after 10 h continuous operation at a fixed potential of 1.61 V (vs. RHE) in 1 M KOH. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that the NiS 2 @NiOOH/CNT catalyzed OER follows the lattice‑oxygen-mediated (LOM) mechanism, which illustrated the mechanism for the high catalytic performance for OER. This paper provides a novel way to design high performance electrocatalysts for OER from nickel based materials.

Phase Transition Engineering of Metal–Organic Frameworks Induces Multiphase Complexation for Enhancing the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Ke Xu,Jie Yin,Linzi Li,Xiaozhen Li,Xiaolong Liang,Jing Liang,Jun Lu,Zhiwen Liu,Huanyue Zhang,Tianming Lv,Xueliang Mu,Jinxuan Liu

Phase transition engineering of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a promising strategy for enhancing electrocatalytic performance in water splitting applications. In this study, we demonstrate a controlled phase transition strategy to synthesize a multiphase composite (op&cp) composed of open phase (op) and closed phase (cp) through precise desolvation treatment. When used as an alkaline water electrocatalyst, op&cp exhibits exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving a remarkably low overpotential of 140 mV under 10 mA cm–2 and maintaining stable operation for over 75 h at 100 mA cm–2. In situ Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the catalytically active substance NiOOH is formed on the engineered phase with a lower potential (1.2 V vs RHE) than the single-phase material (1.3 V vs RHE). This work establishes phase transition engineering as a viable strategy for improving MOF-based catalysis and explores the fundamental mechanism of the dynamic evolution of active sites during the OER.

On-Chip 3D Zn/NiOOH Helical Electrodes for High-Energy-Density Microbattery

Yanqiang Lei,Zihao Guo,Zhizhao Xu,Wenbin Guo,Zifeng Cong,Jinran Yu,Jia Sun,Chuankun Jia,Xiong Pu,Qijun Sun

Explosive progress in wireless and functional mobile electronics calls for miniaturized energy-storage units to push forward energy-autonomous and self-sustainable intelligent microsystems. Emerging three-dimensional (3D) microstructured electrodes for energy-storage devices have drawn great attention due to their attractive stereoscopic architectures to increase the areal loading of active materials. Here, we report a strategy for fabricating a 3D helical electrode for a zinc microbattery (Zn MB) by combining a “top-down” lithography technique and a “bottom-up” electrochemical depositing process. Thanks to the available stereoscopic space, the achieved 3D helical electrode shows a high surface area, outstanding electrolyte permeation, and stress adaptive capability. Based on the structural advantages of a 3D helical electrode, high-performance rechargeable Zn MB has been achieved by depositing Zn and NiOOH as anode and cathode materials, respectively. The Zn microbattery demonstrates a specific areal capacity up to 0.325 mAh·cm–2 corresponding to a high energy density of 0.55 mWh·cm–2. It also exhibits remarkable rate capability (0.272 mAh·cm–2 at 100 mA·cm–2) and excellent cycling stability (85% retention after 1000 cycles). The outstanding electrochemical performance indicates that the 3D Zn MB can work as a promising power source for advanced electronic devices. Paired micro-/nanofabrication process for battery electrodes is also of great significance in gearing toward carbon-neutral.

Revisiting the role of NiOOH in catalytic chlorination degradation of 4-chlorophenol

Xinwei Xu,Jueyao Li,Baowei Shen,Lingyu Zhang,Yongming Tang

To clarify the role of Ni-based compounds in the catalytic chlorination process, NiOOH, Ni(OH) 2 and NiO catalysts were prepared and their catalytic performances were investigated by employing 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) as a model pollutant in this study. Compared with the nearly pure phases of Ni(OH) 2 and NiO, the NiOOH catalyst is dominated by β-NiOOH phase, and exhibits a mixed state of Ni II and Ni III with an actual formula of NiO 0.91 (OH) 1.09 . The average valence state of Ni in the NiOOH is +2.90. A cycle of Ni species for catalytic oxidation process of free chlorine (FC) is proposed for NiOOH. β-NiOOH phase is oxidized by FC to γ-NiOOH phase containing Ni IV species, and then the γ-NiOOH phase are reduced by surface water to β-NiOOH phase or Ni(OH) 2 phase, accompanied by the generation of 1 O 2 species. Also, the reduction of the high-valence NiOOH phases such as β-NiOOH and γ-NiOOH can be reduced by organics since their Fermi levels are lower than the level of highest occupied molecular orbital of 4-CP. The NiOOH catalyst exhibits the TOC removal of around 50% in 100 mg/L 4-CP + 100 mg/L FC at pH 7, higher than the Ni II catalysts (less than 10%). 1 O 2 species dominate the mineralization of 4-CP via the successive oxidation and open-ring reactions, and reactive chlorine species mainly contributes to the conversion of 4-CP to the polychlorinated products. In addition, the high-valence Ni species (Ni III /Ni IV ) significantly contribute to the removal of 4-CP (∼26% contribution ratio) via the direct surface oxidation.

Upgraded recycling of biodegradable PBAT plastic: Efficient hydrolysis and electrocatalytic conversion

Wenlong Pang,Bin Li,Yufeng Wu,Qing Zeng,Jun Yang,Yu Zhang,Shaonan Tian

Biodegradable plastics such as Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) have been extensively utilized in numerous fields. However, post-consumption, PBAT tends to pollute the environment and waste resources. Herein, a novel approach employing a 1,4-butanediol-alkali combined method for the hydrolysis of PBAT is introduced. At 130 °C, with a reaction time of 60 min, the hydrolysis rate of PBAT exceeds 99 %. Subsequently, a two-step synthesis rapidly produces a foam nickel-supported NiOOH catalyst for the electrocatalytic reformation of the PBAT hydrolysate into higher-value chemicals (succinate salts) at an impressive current density of 100 mA cm −2 at 1.43 V (vs. RHE) and a Faradaic efficiency of 97.6 %. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations have elucidated the active state changes of the foam nickel-supported NiOOH catalyst and the intermediates in the oxidation of 1,4-butanediol to succinate, alongside the reaction mechanism. This study offers a viable approach for the degradation of PBAT plastic through a 1,4-butanediol-alkali method and the rapid preparation of a foam nickel-supported NiOOH electrocatalyst, achieving the upgraded recycling of post-consumer biodegradable PBAT plastic.

Constructing LaNiO3/NiO heterostructure via selective dissolution of A-site cations from La1−xSrxNiO3 for promoting oxygen evolution reaction

Yang Chao,Wenxue Ke,Wenyao Zhou,Yu Cui,Jianbin Lin,Ping Liang,Xin He,Chi Zhang

The construction of perovskite/metal oxide heterostructure is a practical approach to enhancing the catalytic activity of perovskite oxides for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The heterostructures are generally fabricated by physical/chemical deposition with inferior controllability. This work presents a facile acid etching method to construct a LaNiO 3 /NiO heterostructure from La 1–x Sr x NiO 3 perovskite oxides. The selective dissolution of A-site elements in acid facilitates the exsolution of Ni to form NiO nanoflakes on the surface. The phase evolution of La 1–x Sr x NiO 3 upon acid etching is associated with both Sr content and etching duration. For La 0.95 Sr 0.05 NiO 3 etched for 10 h (LSN5–10 h), the obtained catalyst had an overpotential of 385 mV at 10 mA cm –2 in 1 M KOH, 285 mV lower than the pristine LSN5. The turnover frequency (TOF) value obtained at an overpotential of 450 mV is 0.97 S –1 , 2.55 times larger than the pristine LSN5, demonstrating its excellent catalytic efficiency. Long-term tests in 1 M KOH further enhanced the OER performance, which could be ascribed to the formation of highly active NiOOH. The excellent OER performance of the LaNiO 3 /NiO heterostructure is attributed to the efficient charge transfer at the interface and the large surface areas of NiO nanoflakes. This work demonstrates an artificial surface decoration method via surface etching to improve the OER activity and stability of Ni-based perovskite oxides.

Electrochemically activated NiOOH/NiFeV-LDH@CC for a highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Yujie Song,Yunfei Yue,Zhichao Shen,Ying Hou,Yanhui Song,Peizhi Liu,Bingshe Xu,Haixia Zhang,Junjie Guo

The surface reconstruction of NiFe-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrocatalysts has been widely studied. The reconstructed NiOOH phase plays a critical role in improving the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of NiFe-based LDHs, but observing the NiOOH phase is difficult because of its instability and exploring the functional mechanism of NiOOH in NiFe-based LDHs remains a great challenge. A simple electrochemical activation was used to synthesize a NiOOH/NiFeV-LDH@CC catalyst consisting of an array of V-doped NiFe-LDH nanosheets on carbon cloth (CC), in which the reconstructed NiOOH phase is the active species. During electrochemical activation, the release of doped V leads to the formation of abundant vanadium vacancy (V V ) and oxygen vacancy (V O ) species, and thus the surface of the NiFe-LDH nanosheets is reconstructed to form NiOOH. Because of the improved intrinsic activity from the NiOOH active phase, and the increased electrical conductivity produced by the abundant V O , NiOOH/NiFeV-LDH@CC has an excellent OER performance in an alkaline solution, with low overpotentials of 209 mV and 241 mV at 20 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. It also has a long-term stability of 80,000 s at a constant current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Using NiOOH/NiFeV-LDH@CC as the anode, an assembled over water splitting (OWS) battery can drive a current density of 20 mA cm −2 (without iR compensation) at a much lower voltage of 1.597 V. At the same time, the electrolytic cell can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at ~1.55V for more than 80,000 s without significant loss. This electrochemical activation method can be used in future designs of electrocatalysts for OER. Download: Download high-res image (154KB) Download: Download full-size image

Reconstruction-Induced Bilayered Amorphous–Crystalline Hybrid NiOOH-Based Anode for Ultrastable Seawater Electrolysis

Zeyang He,Hongkai Bu,Ke Zhao,Saisai Lin,Zhoubin Yu,Yujie Fu,Wenqing Hou,Yujie Gong,Haidong Fan,Chenghang Zheng,Yang-Gang Wang,Xiao Zhang,Xiang Gao

Direct seawater electrolysis represents a critical pathway for large-scale utilization of renewable energy in coastal and island regions without potential impacts on freshwater supply, yet being severely hindered by the corrosion of electrode materials in seawater. Conventional anion-based protection strategies often suffer from lattice degradation during activation or anion desorption in operation. Herein, we report a facile electrodeposition-anodization synthesized amorphous–crystalline hybrid NiFeCoCr anode featuring a vertically bilayered architecture, enabling ultrastable seawater oxidation for over 15 000 h at 500 mA cm −2 . During anodization, the partial sacrificial leaching of Cr forms an amorphous β-NiOOH phase surface layer, exposing abundant active sites to enhance OER activity. Concurrently, in situ generated CrO 4 2– anions stably adsorb and intercalate within the dense crystalline Fe/Co-doped γ-NiOOH underneath layer. The electrolyzer assembled with the NiFeCoCr anode delivers stable operation for over 2500 h in alkaline natural seawater and for 240 h in alkaline saturated NaCl electrolyte at 80°C.

In situ Raman Monitoring of Surface Structures and Oxygen Species on Ni(OH)2/Au/Nickel Foam During Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xiao-Cong Ma,Zhou Yu,Ya-Li Zhang,Jian-Ang Jin,Jian-Ping Li,Xu-Liang Fan,Qiang Wan,Ju-Fang Zheng,Xiao-Shun Zhou,Ya-Hao Wang

Nickel foam is a prevalent material for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Herein, we employed a one-step electrodeposition technique to effectively fabricate a Ni(OH)2/Au/nickel foam (denoted as a Ni(OH)2/Au/NF) catalyst. This catalyst exhibits both surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity and catalytic activity. The electrochemical SERS technique is employed for in situ monitoring of surface structure changes and intermediates during the OER process. The molecular evidence reveals that the electro-driven initial Ni(OH)2 first becomes disordered and finally is oxidized to NiOOH. When the OER occurs, the active oxygen species of NiOO* is observed to release O2. Compared with that of bare NF, the more disordered NiOOH from Ni(OH)2/Au/NF has a greater OER activity. These findings significantly advance the understanding of the OER mechanism on Ni-based catalysts, providing guidelines for the elaboration and optimization of future catalytic systems.

Assembly of highly efficient overall CO2 + H2O electrolysis cell with the matchup of CO2 reduction and water oxidation catalyst

Li Zhang,Hong-Lin Zhu,Zhong-Yi Li,Yue-Qing Zheng

The exploitation of highly active and stable catalysts for reduction of CO2 and water oxidation is one of the approaches to facilitate scalable and sustainable CO2 reduction potentially at the industrial scale. Herein, a feasible strategy to rationally build an overall CO2 + H2O electrocatalytic reaction device is the preparation and matchup of a high-performance CO2 reduction catalyst and low-cost and highly active oxygen anode catalyst. A heterostructured nanosheet, γ-NiOOH/NiCO3/Ni(HCOO)2, exhibited superior catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction, and was integrated with CoPc/Fe–N–C to build an overall CO2 + H2O cell with a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a very low cell voltage of 1.97 V, and the faradaic deficiency of CO2 to CO was maintained at greater than 90% at 1.9 V.
