NiSe@NiOx core-shell nanowires as a non-precious electrocatalyst for upgrading 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid

Lifang Gao,Zhenbang Liu,Jinling Ma,Lijie Zhong,Zhongqian Song,Jianan Xu,Shiyu Gan,Dongxue Han,Li Niu

A key challenge for the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is improving the sluggish kinetics of selective oxidation alcohol groups. Electrocatalysis has been proved to be a green and efficient strategy for heterogeneous synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report an electrocatalyst of NiSe@NiO x core-shell nanowires for efficiently upgrading HMF into FDCA. The NiSe@NiO x features conductive NiSe nanowires as a core and active NiO x as a shell, showing a smaller Tafel slope of 23 mV dec −1 accompanying with a near-quantitative yield of FDCA and 99% Faradaic efficiency (FE). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy unveils the high valence of Ni species in the NiO x shell may be the active sites. Further integrated electrolyzer can produce FDCA and hydrogen simultaneously, showing a 100% FE even after six successive cycles, disclosing robust stability. All these results demonstrate NiSe@NiO x core-shell nanowires as a promising robust non-precious electrocatalyst for highly efficient biomass transformation.

High-Performance Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes Using NiOx Hole-Injection Layers with a High and Stable Work Function

Jian Lin,Xingliang Dai,Xiaoyong Liang,Desui Chen,Xuerong Zheng,Yifei Li,Yunzhou Deng,Hui Du,Yuxun Ye,Dong Chen,Chen Lin,Luying Ma,Qinye Bao,Haibing Zhang,Linjun Wang,Xiaogang Peng,Yizheng Jin

Solution-processed oxide thin films are actively pursued as hole-injection layers (HILs) in quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), aiming to improve operational stability. However, device performance is largely limited by inefficient hole injection at the interfaces of the oxide HILs and high-ionization-potential organic hole-transporting layers. Solution-processed NiO x films with a high and stable work function of ≈5.7 eV achieved by a simple and facile surface-modification strategy are presented. QLEDs based on the surface-modified NiO x HILs show driving voltages of 2.1 and 3.3 V to reach 1000 and 10 000 cd m −2 , respectively, both of which are the lowest among all solution-processed LEDs and vacuum-deposited OLEDs. The device exhibits a T 95 operational lifetime of ≈2500 h at an initial brightness of 1000 cd m −2 , meeting the commercialization requirements for display applications. The results highlight the potential of solution-processed oxide HILs for achieving efficient-driven and long-lifetime QLEDs.

Modulation on electrostatic potential to build a firm bridge at NiOx/perovskite interface for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

Xiangbao Yuan,Xufeng Ling,Hongyu Wang,Chengxia Shen,Ru Li,Yehao Deng,Shijian Chen

The NiO x /perovskite interface in NiO x -based inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is one of the main issues that restrict device performance and long-term stability, as the unwanted interfacial defects and undesirable redox reactions cause severe interfacial non-radiative recombination and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) loss. Herein, a series of self-assembled molecules (SAMs) are employed to bind, bridge, and stabilize the NiO x /perovskite interface by regulating the electrostatic potential. Based on systematically theoretical and experimental studies, 4-pyrazolecarboxylic acid (4-PCA) is proven as an efficient molecule to simultaneously passivate the NiO x and perovskite surface traps, release the interfacial tensile stress as well as quench the detrimental interface redox reactions, thus effectively suppressing the interfacial non-radiative recombination and enhancing the quality of perovskite crystals. Consequently, the PSCs with 4-PCA treatment exhibited an eminently increased V oc , leading to a significant increase in power conversion efficiency from 21.28% to 23.77%. Furthermore, the unencapsulated devices maintain 92.6% and 81.3% of their initial PCEs after storing in air with a relative humidity of 20%-30% for 1000 h and heating at 65 °C for 500 h in a N 2 -filled glovebox, respectively.

Suppressing interfacial defect formation derived from in-situ-generated polyethylenimine-based 2D perovskites to boost the efficiency and stability NiOx-based inverted planar perovskite solar cells

Chenliang Wang,Hong Yang,Xuefeng Xia,Xiaofeng Wang,Fan Li

Recently, NiO x -based inverted planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved great progress. However, the lattice mismatch between NiO x hole-transport layers (HTLs) and perovskite active layers will result in interfacial defect formation, which severely influences device efficiency and stability. In this work, this is alleviated by coating of polyethylenimine cations (PEI•HI) on the surface of NiO x HTLs. The introduction of PEI•HI can not only effectively passivate the surface defects of NiO x films, but also induce the in-situ-generation of polyethylenimine (PEI)-based two-dimensional (2D) perovskite interlayers between NiO x and CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ). Such PEI-based 2D perovskite interlayer can dramatically mitigate the lattice mismatch between NiO x and perovskites to suppress the interfacial defects formations and promote the high-quality crystal nucleation and growth of above perovskite films. Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that the molecular weights of PEI act the pivotal part in controlling the nucleation quality of perovskites. When employing PEI with molecular weight of 10,000 (PEI-1000), the high-crystalline perovskite film with large-sized grains and reduced interfacial defects is obtained and the champion PSC delivers a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.23% with weak hysteresis effect and improved reproducibility and stability. Our work provides a promising approach to improve the lattice match between NiO x and perovskites for high-performance NiO x -based inverted planar PSCs.

Self-Assembled Monolayer Suppresses Interfacial Reaction between NiOx and Perovskite for Efficient and Stable Inverted Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Zuxiong Xu,Jianwei Wang,Zhongyu Liu,Cong Xiao,Jiahao Wang,Ning Liu,Jing Zhang,Like Huang,Ziyang Hu,Yuejin Zhu,Xiaohui Liu

Inorganic NiOx has attracted tremendous attention in organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in recent years but is relatively less used in all-inorganic PSCs. In this study, we have discovered and confirmed the detrimental interfacial reaction between NiOx and DMAI-containing CsPbI3 inorganic perovskites. Thus, a self-assembled monolayer, Br-2PACz, is employed to modify the NiOx surface to obstruct the adverse interfacial reaction and further improve the device performance. The results demonstrate that Br-2PACz modification on NiOx can also improve interface contact, perovskite film morphology, and energy level alignments. Consequently, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.34% with a high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.15 V is obtained for inverted NiOx/Br-2PACz-based CsPbI3 PSCs compared to the reference NiOx-based PSC with a moderate PCE of 15.16% (VOC 1.05 V). Moreover, the stabilities of both CsPbI3 films and devices exhibited significant enhancement after Br-2PACz modification. The unpacked PSCs could maintain 80, 73, and 89% of the initial efficiency after aging in 30–35% RH for 960 h, heating at 60 °C for 48 h, and continuous illumination for 284 h, respectively, highly superior to the reference devices. Our work offers a facile and effective approach for developing high-performance inverted NiOx-based CsPbI3 PSCs.

Flexible Substrate-Compatible and Efficiency-Improved Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with Reduced Annealing Temperature of NiOx Hole-Injecting Layer

Shuai-Hao Xu,Jin-Zhe Xu,Ying-Bo Tang,Shu-Guang Meng,Wei-Zhi Liu,Dong-Ying Zhou,Liang-Sheng Liao

The growing demand for wearable and attachable displays has sparked significant interest in flexible quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). However, the challenges of fabricating and operating QLEDs on flexible substrates persist due to the lack of stable and low-temperature processable charge-injection/-transporting layers with aligned energy levels. In this study, we utilized NiOxnanoparticles that are compatible with flexible substrates as a hole-injection layer (HIL). To enhance the work function of the NiOxHIL, we introduced a self-assembled dipole modifier called 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid (4–CF3–BA) onto the surface of the NiOxnanoparticles. The incorporation of the dipole molecules through adsorption treatment has significantly changed the wettability and electronic characteristics of NiOxnanoparticles, resulting in the formation of NiO(OH) at the interface and a shift in vacuum level. The alteration of surface electronic states of the NiOxnanoparticles not only improves the carrier balance by reducing the hole injection barrier but also prevents exciton quenching by passivating defects in the film. Consequently, the NiOx-based red QLEDs with interfacial modification demonstrate a maximum current efficiency of 16.1 cd/A and a peak external quantum efficiency of 10.3%. This represents a nearly twofold efficiency enhancement compared to control devices. The mild fabrication requirements and low annealing temperatures suggest potential applications of dipole molecule-modified NiOxnanoparticles in flexible optoelectronic devices.

4-tert-butylpyridine induced Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio modulation in NiOx hole transport layer towards efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells

Taotao Hu,Hongming Hou,Jin Peng,Qiaofeng Wu,Jialong He,Hua Yu,Rui Liu,Tian Hou,Xiangqing Zhou,Meng Zhang,Xiaolong Zhang,Xinchun Yang,Yuanmiao Sun,Xuanhua Li,Yang Bai

NiO x plays a vital role in fabricating efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the relatively low conductivity and inefficient hole extraction of NiO x hole transport layer (HTL) due to the low Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ ratio limit its use in high-efficiency PSCs. Here, we report a facile strategy to remarkably enhance the electrical conductivity and hole extraction capability of NiO x HTL by simply introducing the small molecule 4- tert -butylpyridine ( t BP) as additive in the NiO x precursor solution. It is revealed that the t BP efficient improves the charge selectivity of the NiO x interface, inducing the preferable p-type carrier concentration on the surface. Consequently, more oxygen is involved in the process of Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ conversion, and the resulting t BP: NiO x HTL exhibits significantly enhanced hole extraction and transport property. In addition, a thin layer of LiF is applied to passivate the surface of NiO x , which enables improved hole migration ability by the dipole effect of LiF and reduced trap state density of the surface. The inverted PSCs (0.16 cm 2 ) fabricated with t BP: NiO x HTL delivers an enhanced efficiency of 20.2% relative to the control devices (17.5%). t BP: NiO x devices with a large area of 1 cm 2 are also demonstrated, which achieve a decent efficiency of 16% with excellent long-term stability.

Ni3+-Rich Ni/NiOx@C Nanocapsules Below 4 nm Constructed by Low-Temperature Graphitization of Self-Assembled Few-Layer Coordination Polymers toward Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Jiajia Zhang,Fang Cui,Qinghai Ma,Tieyu Cui

Low-cost and eco-friendly Ni/NiO heterojunctions have been theoretically proven to be the ideal candidate for stepwise electrocatalysis of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction, attributed to the preferred OH ad adsorption by incompletely filled d orbitals of NiO phase and favorable H ad adsorption energy of Ni phase. Nevertheless, most Ni/NiO compounds reported so far fail to exhibit excellent catalytic activity, possibly due to the lack of efficient electron transport, limited interfacial active sites, and unregulated Ni n+ ratios. To address the above bottlenecks, herein, the ultrasmall Ni/NiO x @C nanocapsules (<5 nm) are directly constructed by graphitization of four-layer Ni-based coordination polymers at record low temperatures of 400 °C. Ascribed to the accelerated electron and mass transfer by the carbon nano-onions coated around Ni/NiO x heterojunctions, the extreme rise in interfaces and Ni 3+ defects with t6 2ge1 g electronic configuration owed to the ultrasmall size, the Ni/NiO x @C nanocapsules exhibit the highest catalytic activity and the lowest overpotential of η 10 = 80 mV among various Ni/NiO materials (measured on the glassy carbon electrode). This work not only constructs an industrialized high-efficiency electrocatalyst toward alkaline HER, but also provides a novel strategy for the constant-scale preparation of multicomponent transition metals-based nanocrystals below 4 nm.

A carbon-quantum-dot-hybridized NiOx hole-transport layer enables efficient and stable planar p–i–n perovskite solar cells with high open-circuit voltage

Xuefeng Xia,Dan Zhang,Xiaofeng Wang,Zonghu Xiao,Fan Li

In recent years, the nickel oxide (NiOx)-based planar p–i–n perovskite solar cell (PSC) has progressed rapidly. Nevertheless, poor electrical properties of NiOx, unoptimized band alignment between NiOx and perovskites, as well as pervasive defects and unwanted chemical redox reactions at NiOx/perovskite interfaces have severely limited the device efficiency and stability. It is of particular interest to explore a facile approach to address these issues simultaneously. Herein, an effective carbon-quantum-dot-hybridized NiOx (CQD-hybridized NiOx) hole transport layer (HTL) is fabricated via hybridizing a kind of environmentally friendly CQD with NiOx. By virtue of the rich surface polar groups of CQDs, hybridization of such CQDs with NiOx can efficaciously upgrade the electrical properties of NiOx HTLs, thereby reducing ohmic loss and energy level offset at NiOx/perovskite interfaces. Meanwhile, the application of CQD-hybridized NiOx HTLs can boost the nucleation and growth of perovskite layers, thus suppressing the formation of interfacial defects/traps and reducing interface-mediated nonradiative recombination losses. Moreover, such CQD-hybridized NiOx HTL can also diminish redox reactions at the NiOx/perovskite interface, improving interface stability. Based on this CQD-hybridized NiOx HTL, a champion PCE of 20.53% with enhanced stability has been achieved. More strikingly, the optimized device delivers a Voc as high as 1.16 V, the highest Voc for CH3NH3PbI3 PSCs based on NiOx HTLs as far as we know. These results demonstrate that CQD-hybridized NiOx HTLs will be a promising candidate for efficient and stable planar p–i–n PSCs.

Multi-functional buried interface engineering derived from in-situ-formed 2D perovskites using π-conjugated liquid-crystalline molecule with aggregation-induced emission for efficient and stable NiOx-based inverted perovskite solar cells

Dan Zhang,Xiaofeng Wang,Tingfang Tian,Xuefeng Xia,Jiayu Duan,Zhiping Fan,Fan Li

The poor and limited-functional NiO x /perovskite buried interface has hindered the development of NiO x -based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a π-conjugated liquid-crystalline organic spacer with aggregation-induced emission (AIE), ( Z )-2-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-3-(4-(3-aminopropoxy)phenyl)acrylonitrile (BPCSA), is employed for the multi-functional NiO x /perovskite buried interface engineering. The functional groups of BPCSA spacer can coordinate with NiO x and induce the in-situ formation of 2D perovskite at the NiO x /perovskite interface. The in-situ -formed 2D perovskite interlayer can passivate interface defects, strengthen interface interconnection and optimize energy level alignment between NiO x and 3D perovskites. More markedly, the π-conjugated liquid-crystalline molecular structure and AIE property of BPCSA spacer can guide the high-quality crystal growth of upper 3D perovskite films, release interfacial strain, facilitate interfacial carrier transport and realize efficient photosensitization process concurrently. Consequently, such 3D/2D PSCs can acquire a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.45% with improved stability. Besides, high-performance flexible 3D/2D PSCs are also successfully demonstrated.

Vacancy defect modulation in hot-casted NiOx film for efficient inverted planar perovskite solar cells

Aili Wang,Zhiyuan Cao,Jianwei Wang,Shurong Wang,Chengbo Li,Nuo Li,Lisha Xie,Yong Xiang,Tingshuai Li,Xiaobin Niu,Liming Ding,Feng Hao

Nickel oxide (NiO x ) has exhibited great potential as an inorganic hole transport layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its wide optical bandgap and superior stability. In this study, we have modulated the Ni 2+ vacancies in NiO x film by controlling deposition temperature in a hot-casting process, resulting the change of coordination structure and charge state of NiO x . Moreover, the change of the HOMO level of NiO x makes it more compatible with perovskite to decrease energy losses and enhance hole carrier injection efficiency . Besides, the defect modulation in the electronic structure of NiO x is beneficial for increasing the electrical conductivity and mobility, which are considered to achieve the balance of charge carrier transport and avoid charge accumulation at the interface between perovskite and HTL effectively. Both experimental analyses and theoretical calculations reveal the increase of nickel vacancy defects change the electronic structure of NiO x by increasing the ratio of Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ and improving the p-type characteristics. Accordingly, an optimal deposition temperature at 120 °C enabled a 36.24% improvement in the power conversion efficiency compared to that deposited at room temperature (25 °C). Therefore, this work provides a facile method to manipulate the electronic structure of NiO x to improve the charge carrier transport and photovoltaic performance of related PSCs.

Optimization of sputtering NiOx films for perovskite solar cell applications

Xin Yan,Jianghui Zheng,LingLing Zheng,Guanhua Lin,Huangding Lin,Guo Chen,Binbin Du,Fengyan Zhang

In this work, we systematically investigated the properties of three kinds of NiO x films prepared by magnetron sputtering either NiO or Ni target under direct current (DC) or radio frequency (RF) power without any preheating. Those NiO x films were found to be different in composition ratios, lattice strain and energy levels, thus showing different optical and carrier transport properties. By RF power source, sputtering Ni target in pure O 2 atmosphere led to NiO x film with relatively good crystallization and surface properties compared with other two types of NiO x films. These NiO x films were further introduced into CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 based planar p-i-n heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as the hole transport layers (HTL). It is revealed that PSCs based on NiO x HTL prepared by sputtering Ni target in pure O 2 atmosphere achieved a highest power conversion efficiency of 16.3% with negligible hysteresis. Compared with devices with PEDOT:PSS HTL, PSCs based on magnetron sputtered NiO x HTL presented substantially improved stability in air. The results provide theoretical and experimental guidance on selecting NiO x HTLs fabricated by magnetron sputtering techniques.
