Thermo-chemo-mechanical Coupling induced Degradation of SiC Fibers and PyC Interphase during NITE-SiCf/SiC process

Hangfei Zhang,Han Luo,Mengli Xiao,Hao Qin,Xiaowu Chen,Xiangyang Chen,Jinshan Yang,Jianjun Sha,Shaoming Dong

SiC f /SiC composites are promising for extreme environments, and the NITE process enables their efficient densification. However, the coupled effects of temperature, pressure, and sintering additives on fiber/interphase degradation remain unclear. This study investigates degradation mechanisms in NITE-SiC f /SiC composites fabricated at 1650-1750 °C using Cansas-3303 fibers. Thermal and thermochemical treatments on fibers with 0-700 nm PyC coatings decouple these factors. Results show the pseudo-ductile to brittle fracture transition occurs between 1700 °C and 1750 °C, driven by temperature-induced grain coarsening, additive erosion of fibers, and carbothermal reactions between PyC and additive. These reactions disrupt interphase integrity, induce strong bonding, and inhibit fiber pull-out. Pressure exacerbates both fiber deformation and interphase damage. Monofilament tensile tests reveal that temperature is the dominant degradation factor, with fiber strength dropping from 4.24 GPa (as-received) to 1.82 GPa after heat treatment and further to 1.33 GPa after thermochemical treatment without interphase. The extent of PyC interphase thinning correlates strongly with sintering temperature, suggesting an optimal interphase thickness exists for each processing condition. The findings provide critical insights for optimizing the microstructure and mechanical performance of NITE-SiC f /SiC composites.

Low-temperature pressure-less joining of SiCf/SiC via NITE sintering: Mechanical performance and steam oxidation resistance

Lingzhi Chen,Ce Zheng,Dongying Wang,Yichun Bi,Chaofan Yang,Shengkai Wang,Xiaoqiang Li

Developing a pressure-less joining process operable at tolerable temperatures is crucial for practical engineering deployment of SiC f /SiC thin-walled cladding tubes. Hereby, we invented a low-temperature pressure-less Nano-Infiltration and Transient Eutectic (NITE) joining method for SiC f /SiC composites using Al 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 sintering additives, achieving successful bonding at 1600 ℃ for 2.5 h without interfacial debonding. The joint microstructure consisted of SiC with finely distributed Y 3 Al 5 O 12 intergranular phase, exhibiting excellent integrity and mechanical performance (shear strength of 46.7 ± 2.7 MPa). After 8 h steam oxidation at 1200 ℃, joints retained 77.9 % strength (36.4 ± 6.8 MPa) through protective SiO 2 /AlOOH layers and Y-silicate transformations. Successful SiC f /SiC cladding tube encapsulation demonstrated technical feasibility, with XCT revealing robust bonding despite minor inner-wall densification issues. This work establishes NITE as a viable solution for nuclear applications, combining favorable processing conditions with superior joint performance.

Semi-coherent Interface and Vacancy Engineering for Constructing NiTe/FeTe/Fe3O4/FF to Boost Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Chunxiao Li,Yuying Feng,Jiahui Jiang,Ting Zhao,Guancheng Xu,Li Zhang

Transition metal-based tellurides (TMTs) with excellent electrical conductivity are expected to be ideal electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. However, compared to transition metal sulfides and selenides, the reported applications of TMTs in overall water splitting are fewer. Herein, the NiTe/FeTe/Fe 3 O 4 /FF carnation flower-like with a semi-coherent interface is successfully constructed to enhance the electrochemical overall water splitting performance. Specifically, it achieves low overpotentials of 54 and 176 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. What's more, the electrolyzer requires a cell voltage of 1.5 V to sustain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and maintains remarkable stability for an extensive duration of 450 h even at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Semi-coherent interface engineering and vacancy engineering not only improve the OH⁻ adsorption capacity of catalysts but also promote the desorption of adsorbed hydrogen (H ads ). In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that FeOOH and NiOOH formed by NiTe/FeTe/Fe 3 O 4 /FF during the OER are the genuine active sites. This study provides a promising approach for the electrochemical water splitting of TMTs by combining semi-coherent interface engineering and vacancy engineering.

Artificial intelligence-assisted design of FeNi-LDH-NiTe needle-like array for high current density oxygen evolution reaction

Jieyu Zhang,Qianwei Chen,Sichen Wang,Xingyu Bai,Zhongchuang Liu,Jiangxiong Deng,Dongyu Wang,Yanmou Shao,Shu-Juan Bao

Active, stable, and low-cost alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is essential for large-scale hydrogen (H 2 ) production via electrochemical water splitting. Traditional catalyst design often relies on experience-driven, trial-and-error approaches, limits exploration efficiency. To overcome this, we present an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted high-throughput framework combining large language models (LLMs)-based literature mining and Python-driven simulations. LLMs identifies FeNi-layered double hydroxide (FeNi-LDH) has excellent activity for OER while Python-based simulations propose a needle-like facilitate bubble detachment. In our experimental, the as-prepared FeNi-LDH exhibits good OER activity (237 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ). After growing FeNi-LDH on NiTe array, the needle-like FeNi-LDH-NiTe not only delivers enhanced activity (198 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), but also exhibits faster bubble generation and migration, which allow it to stably work at high current density (1 A cm −2 ). The successful AI-guided catalyst design proposes a clear strategy to decouple kinetic and non-kinetic optimization for exploring excellent electrocatalyst.

Constructing Electron- and Surface-Structure-Controlled Crystalline/Amorphous Hierarchical NiTe/NiFeCe-LDH Nanoarrays for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Yuchan Liu,Wenjing Gao,Qintong Huang,Chenyao Chen,Rongkai Ye,Xiaoxiong Liu,Jianqiang Hu

Constructing nonprecious metal-based telluride heterointerfaces provides an effective strategy for developing efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting. However, there still remain major challenges for catalysts that rely on constructing heterojunction interfaces to obtain high-active sites with optimized electronic structures to achieve an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, hierarchical NiTe/NiFeCe-LDH core–shell heterojunction nanoarrays with crystalline/amorphous interfaces were synthesized based on the Ce doping and interface engineering strategy. Benefiting from the high conductivity of crystalline NiTe nanorods and abundant active sites in amorphous NiFeCe-LDHs, the NiTe/NiFeCe-LDH heterojunction nanoarrays exhibited an excellent OER performance and long-term stability of more than 120 h in an alkaline medium, achieving a low overpotential of ∼247 mV at 100 mA·cm–2, which was ∼44% lower than commercial RuO2 (∼443 mV). Moreover, the NiTe/NiFeCe-LDHs achieved a current density of 10 mA·cm–2 at a low voltage of 1.45 V in overall water splitting. Density functional theory calculations revealed that Ce doping and the strong electronic interaction at the crystalline/amorphous interface of the NiTe/NiFeCe-LDHs could modulate its electronic structure by upward-shifting the d-band center of the Ni sites. This modulation optimized the binding energies of oxygen intermediates and consequently enhanced the OER performance of the NiTe/NiFeCe-LDHs. This research presents a novel approach for designing efficient overall water-splitting electrocatalysts through the synergistic doping–interface strategy.

Interfacial engineering of crystalline-amorphous NiCu-LDH/NiTe@NF: Opening a synergistic pathway for superior oxygen evolution catalysis

Yi Zheng,Yibai Sun,Qi Wang,Ronghui Xu,Yingping Zheng,Jinxi Chen,Yongbing Lou

The design of an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is significant for water splitting. Telluride-based materials exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity and mass transfer properties, yet their application in electrocatalysis remains constrained by limited active site exposure. Conversely, layered double hydroxides possess unique granular/lamellar morphologies that offer significant potential for active site amplification through strategic morphology regulation. In response to the demand for highly efficient and stable OER electrocatalysts, this study presented a rationally designed heterostructure. NiTe nanorods were first grown on nickel foam (NF), followed by intimate coupling with granular nickel-copper layered double hydroxide (NiCu-LDH). Ultimately, a well-defined core-shell structure of NiCu-LDH/NiTe@NF was successfully constructed. Unlike conventional 2D nanosheets, the NiCu-LDH exhibited unique low-crystallinity characteristics, resulting in a crystalline-amorphous heterostructure that provided abundant unsaturated coordination sites, thereby effectively facilitating the adsorption and conversion of reaction intermediates. Benefiting from the optimized interfacial electronic structure and rapid charge transfer capability, the composite catalyst exhibited an overpotential of only 315 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation for over 160 h at 50 mA cm −2 with negligible performance degradation. Mechanistic studies revealed that the formation of NiOOH acts as the true active species, significantly enhancing OER performance. This work not only offered a high-performance OER electrocatalyst, but also provided new insights into the rational design of crystalline-amorphous composite materials.

Synergistic coupling of NiTe nanoarrays with NiFe(OH)x-2 and Pt for efficient and stable overall water splitting

Xiaohui Chen,Zhishuncheng Li,Zhishan Li,Jia Liu,Zhouhang Li,Hua Wang,Kongzhai Li

Hydrogen energy represents a promising, sustainable and clean energy resource. However, widespread application of water electrolysis for hydrogen production remains limited by the reliance on expensive noble-metal-based catalysts. Developing cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts is therefore crucial. Herein, we propose a novel heterostructure strategy to prepare non-noble-metal-based catalysts for overall water splitting. Through a simple two-step synthesis, NiTe-supported catalysts were fabricated: NF/NiTe/NiFe(OH) x -2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and NF/NiTe/Pt for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Electrochemical measurements revealed outstanding catalytic activities: the optimized catalysts achieved current densities of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 264 mV for the OER and 30 mV for the HER. When integrated into a two-electrode electrolyzer, the system required only 1.55 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 and 1.73 V to reach 100 mA cm −2 , while maintaining stable operation for 100 h and 50 h, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Pt/NiTe heterostructure possesses a near-optimal Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H* =-0.06 eV), which substantially accelerates HER kinetics. This work provides fundamental insights into heterostructure design and offers guidance for the rational development of efficient nanomaterials for catalytic applications.

Tailoring Built-In Electric Field and Superhydrophilic–Superaerophobic Surface of Fe-Doped NiTe/NiSe2 Heterojunction for Efficient Electrocatalytic Urea Oxidation

Mingjie Lei,Yi Zhao,Xiujuan Sun,Yuan Pan,Yadong Liu,Jiayu Kang,Diye Wei,Luyi Zou,Yong Pei

Electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) holds great promise in green energy conversion and pollutant degradation with low energy-consumption. Herein, Fe-NiTe/NiSe 2 nanosheets array with super-hydrophilic/aerophobic surface and enhanced built-in electric field is constructed. The surface hydrophilic/aerophobic properties enabling rapid bubble nucleation and efficient detachment, liberating covered active sites, thus improving the surface adsorption kinetics of urea molecular and OH − . Moreover, Fe incorporation accelerates charge transfer and modulates the built-in electric field at the NiTe/NiSe 2 heterojunction interface. This reduces the surface reconstruction potential and optimizes the occupancy of hybrid anti-bonding (d-δ)* orbitals, leading to the formation of electron-rich region (Fe-NiTe) and electron-deficient region (Fe-NiSe 2 ), which preferentially adsorbs the electron-withdrawing (C═O) and electron-donating (─NH 2 ) groups of urea, respectively, thereby optimizing the adsorption energy of urea molecules. Therefore, the Fe-NiTe/NiSe 2 heterojunction exhibits excellent alkaline UOR performance, requiring only 1.447 V RHE to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , which it can maintain for over 90 h. The Fe-NiTe/NiSe 2 (+) ∥ Pt/C (-) urea electrolyzer can maintain stable for 150 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This work offers a macro- and microscopic coupling engineering strategy to address the surface and intrinsic properties for alkaline UOR, holding significant practical value for advancing energy-efficient hydrogen production and wastewater treatment.

Rapid NITE sintering of high strength and toughness SiCf/SiC composites by an internal Joule heating of 3D conductive carbon networks

Hao Chen,Jianjun Chen,Qingfeng Zeng,Xichen Wang,Zaheer Hussain,Xinyuan Zhang

SiC f /SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are prime candidates for hot-section components in next-generation aero-engines due to their exceptional high-temperature strength and low density. However, the rapid and efficient densification of components remains the critical bottleneck that severely hinders their widespread engineering applications. In this work, a rapid nano-infiltration and transient eutectic-phase (NITE) sintering method to fabricate high performance SiC f /SiC composites. By utilizing the internal Joule heating of 3D conductive carbon networks, rapid densification under low pressure was successfully achieved. The influence of sintering aid content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. SiC f /SiC composites can be densified with 12 wt% sintering aids within 10 min. The sintering aids are present at the grain boundaries in the form of an Al-Y-O amorphous phase and Y 3 Al 5 O 12 crystals. The extremely short sintering time prevents damage to the fibers and the fiber interfaces, thereby enabling the fabrication of composites with favorable mechanical properties. The optimum flexural strength and fracture toughness of the SiC f /SiC composites are 411.41 ± 37.42 MPa and 13.51 ± 0.84 MPa m 1/2 , respectively. This work can provide new strategies and guidance for the rapid fabrication of various ceramic matrix composites with excellent mechanical properties.
