Electronic structure modulation and morphological engineering of trifunctional NixCoyP electrode for ultrastable overall water splitting at 1 A cm−2 and efficient biomass oxidation valorization

Liyan Wang,Zhaokun Wang,Liang Chu,Zhi Huang,Mu Yang,Ge Wang

The development of transition metal electrocatalysts with excellent HER, OER and HMFOR activity can accelerate the achievement of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. Herein, we report a simple structure modulation and morphological strategy for constructing Ni x Co y P-3 nanoneedles array with superhydrophilic/aerophobic surface. The small and well-dispersed nanoneedles can expose a larger electrochemical surface area. It has good mechanical stability, which can withstand the impact of violent bubbles at ampere-level current densities. Ni x Co y P-3 has a stronger H 2 O adsorption capacity than Ni 2 P, and can promote the adsorption and desorption of H* to facilitate the HER process. During the OER process, the formation of the Ni x Co y P-3/Ni x Co y OOH heterostructure is an important factor to stabilize oxygen evolution at ampere-level current densities. During the HMFOR process, Ni x Co y P-3 has a stronger HMF adsorption energy than Ni 2 P, and the generated FDCA can be desorbed from the Ni x Co y P-3 surface more easily. The overpotentials of the Ni x Co y P-3 are only 38.8 mV and 231.2 mV for HER and OER at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline medium. When in the 1.0 M KOH + 50 mM HMF, only 1.37 V was required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 of the Ni x Co y P-3 II Ni x Co y P-3 two-electrode system. Ni x Co y P-3 can drive 1000 mA cm −2 overall water splitting for 100 h of stable operation in 1 M KOH, validating its potential in industrial hydrogen production.

Magnetic Field Enhancing OER Electrocatalysis of NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide

Qin Xi,Teng Jing,Guo Wenyao,Wang Lei,Xiao Shuning,Xu Qunjie,Min Yulin,Fan Jinchen

Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is widely used in the field of energy and chemical industry, such as metal-air batteries and water splitting. Due to its unique layered structure and excellent stability, NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) is considered as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for OER in an alkaline environment. The further improvement of the OER performance of NiFe LDH still plagues its development. Herein, we directly applied the external magnetic field to improve the electrocatalytic activity of NiFe LDH toward OER. The overpotential of the NiFe LDH could achieve at only ~ 207 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 when the external magnetic field of 200 mT was applied. The Tafel slope of the NiFe LDH is also reduced to 41.7 mV dec −1 under the action of a magnetic field of 200 mT. For the paramagnetic NiFe LDH, the OER magnetic field enhancing effect on the NiFe LDH probably mainly originated from the magnetohydrodynamic effect and charge transfer effect at the electrode/electrolyte interface induced by the magnetic field. The alignment of magnetic moments of NiFe LDH raised from the magnetization may also have a positive effect. Graphical Abstract The oxygen evolution reaction performance of the NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) could be significantly enhanced by applying the moderate external magnetic field through the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect and charge transfer (CT) effect at the electrode/electrolyte interface induced by magnetic field.

In-situ phosphating Co@Nitrogen-doping graphene boosts overall water splitting under alkaline condition

Dongfeng Sun,Songmin Lin,Yuan Yu,Fangyou Meng,Gaohui Du,Bingshe Xu

It is still challenging to design and synthesize highly efficient and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER). Herein, we developed an in-situ phosphating Co@nitrogen-doping graphene to obtain N and P co-doped carbon-coated cobalt phosphide (CoP@N,P C) that could be used for overall water splitting. The unique 3D porous structure of CoP@N,P C is characterized by a large number of active catalytic sites. High wettability of catalyst in electrolyte solution facilitates the transfer of ions. The synergism between the CoP cores and N, P C shells improves the total hydrolysis performance of the electrocatalyst during the HER and OER. At the current densities of 10 mA/cm 2 (1 M of KOH), the HER overpotential recorded for the CoP@N,P C is 113 mV, and the OER overpotential is 320 mV. The cell voltage of the CoP@N,P C as bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting is 1.67 V (at 10 mA/cm 2 ), which is close to that of the full noble-metal electrode (RuO 2 || Pt/C, 1.58 V). The CoP@N, P C bifunctional catalyst can be potentially used to replace noble-metal electrodes to realize water splitting.

Preparation of Non-Noble Metal Catalyst FeCo2O4/MoS2 for Production of Hydrogen and Oxygen by Electrochemical Decomposition of Water

Zhouqian Chen,Zongmei Li,Manyi Zhang,Yujia Wang,Siang Zhang,Yuanyuan Cheng

FeCo2O4/MoS2binary composite catalysts were prepared by the hydrothermal method and calcination method. In this paper, the morphology and structure of the materials were characterized by means of SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. It was found that MoS2has high activity and good stability in HER, and and it has more prospect than noble metal catalysts. In oxygen evolution chemical kinetics, its rich redox potential allowed it to adsorb OH−on (Co2+/Co3+, Fe2+/Fe3+) and enhanced the activity of OER. The cross-nanosheet structure of the FeCo2O4/MoS2composite catalyst exposed more catalytic sites and accelerated charge transfer to achieve more efficient mass transfer. FeCo2O4/MoS2as an anode and cathode was assembled into a two-electrode system in overall water splitting, which showed good catalytic activity. When the composite ratio of FeCo2O4to MoS2was 1:0.3, the composite catalyst had the best catalytic activity. The results show that when FeCo2O4/MoS2is used as a cathode and anode to assemble an alkaline cell, respectively, the voltage for total water electrolysis is 1.59 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, it can keep good stability in a 10 h test with electrolyzed water, and its current retention rate is 98.5%.

Ultrafine carbon encapsulated NiRu alloys as bifunctional electrocatalysts for boosting overall water splitting: morphological and electronic modulation through minor Ru alloying

Qifeng Yang,Peng Jin,Bing Liu,Liang Zhao,Jiahao Cai,Zhan Wei,Shouwei Zuo,Jing Zhang,Lai Feng

Encapsulating metallic nanoparticles (NPs) with a graphitic carbon shell is a promising strategy to achieve highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and electrochemical overall water splitting (OWS). This work presents a simple and facile synthesis of graphitic carbon coated NixRuy alloys. The optimized catalyst (e-Ni0.6Ru0.4@C) displays an ultrafine morphology and outstanding HER and OER activities in alkaline media, which are among the best reported so far for various carbon-based electrocatalysts. Remarkably, the e-Ni0.6Ru0.4@C‖e-Ni0.6Ru0.4@C pair needs a low cell voltage of 1.51/1.62 V for driving OWS to reach 10/100 mA cm−2, far outperforming the benchmark electrode pair Pt/C‖RuO2. As expected, this carbon-based catalyst also exhibits superior durability as compared to that of precious catalysts. The experimental evidence combined with density functional theory (DFT) computations thus demonstrates for the first time that minor Ru alloying enables not only the morphological modulation but also the fine electronic modification of the catalyst, which both facilitate the overall electrochemical reactions on the carbon shell surface. Thus, our results may further shed light on how to design and optimize carbon-based electrocatalysts to achieve enhanced catalytic performance for OWS.

Hierarchical Co–FeS2/CoS2 heterostructures as a superior bifunctional electrocatalyst

Ka Wang,Weilan Guo,Shancheng Yan,Haizeng Song,Yi Shi

The traditional method of preparing hydrogen and oxygen as efficient clean energy sources mainly relies on the use of platinum, palladium, and other precious metals. However, the high cost and low abundance limit wide application of such metals. As such, one challenging issue is the development of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for such purposes. In this study, we synthesized Co–FeS2/CoS2 heterostructures via a hydrothermal method for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Benefitting from their unique three-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures, Co-doped FeS2, and CoS2 formed heterostructures on Co–FeS2 petals, which bestowed remarkable electrocatalytic properties upon Co–FeS2/CoS2 nanostructures. Co–FeS2/CoS2 effectively catalyzed the OER with an overpotential of 278 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution, and also is capable of driving a current density −10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of −103 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The overpotential of the OER and HER only decreased by 5 mV and 3 mV after 1000 cycles. Our Co–FeS2/CoS2 materials may offer a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Ruthenium-nickel-cobalt alloy nanoparticles embedded in hollow carbon microtubes as a bifunctional mosaic catalyst for overall water splitting

Yanqin Xue,Qing Yan,Xiaojing Bai,Yanyan Xu,Xuan Zhang,Yiju Li,Kai Zhu,Ke Ye,Jun Yan,Dianxue Cao,Guiling Wang

The development of efficient bifunctional catalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for reducing the cost of hydrogen production by water splitting. Herein, hollow microtubes composed of RuNi 1 Co 1 alloy nanoparticles uniformly embedded in the carbon matrix (RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT) are prepared through a simple impregnation followed by reduction. Benefiting from the unique mosaic structure and the synergistic effect between Ru and NiCo, RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT achieves more exposed active sites and improved reaction kinetics. As a consequence, RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT exhibits considerable catalytic activities with the overpotentials of 78 mV for HER and 299 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. In addition, RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT exhibits excellent stability for up to 30 h in both HER and OER processes at 20 mA cm −2 , which is attributed to the protection of the RuNi 1 Co 1 alloy particles by the carbon layer. Furthermore, the assembled RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT || RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT overall water splitting system shows a cell voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm −2 . The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the addition of Ru can optimize the hydrogen adsorption free energy of Ni and Co sites. Finally, a solar panel-driven water splitting device is built, which can realize green and sustainable hydrogen production. The fabrication of RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT provides a new way for the preparation of effective alloy nanomaterials for energy storage and conversion.

Boron-Tuned Covalency Enables Durable and High-Performance Perovskite OER Catalysts

Zhirui Fu,Yucheng Hang,Rong Ma,Zhenyong Lu,Yufan Shen,Yunxia Zhao,Yunfei Bu

Perovskite catalysts show great promise for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) but still face challenges in activity and stability. Here, we report boron incorporation into Sr 2 (FeCo 0.6 Mo 0.4 )O 5+δ to tailor the Co–O–Fe covalency and electronic states, delivering 300 mV at 10 mA cm − 2 and a 67 mV dec − 1 Tafel slope with > 140 h durability in 1 m KOH. Spectroscopy shows lowered Co/Fe valences and an increased fraction of lattice oxygen, while Density Functional Theory(DFT) (ELF/DOS/free-energy) indicates strengthened Transition Metal-Oxygen (TM─O) bonding and reduced reaction barriers. These findings support a shift toward an adsorbate evolution like pathway with suppressed lattice oxygen participation, rationalizing both the enhanced activity and robustness. Flexible Zn air batteries using Sr 2 (FeCo 0.6 Mo 0.4 ) 0.9 B 0.1 O 5+δ exhibit lower charging overpotentials and superior cycling stability than Pt/C+RuO 2 , highlighting device relevance. This work establishes metalloid doping enabled covalency engineering as a general strategy to boost OER performance and stability in perovskites.

Defect engineering-mediated OER-enhanced ECL for ultrasensitive detection of E.Coli

Yiting Shao,Xuemei Wang,Hanxi Liu,Jianfei Xia,Feifei Zhang,Zonghua Wang

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system of Luminol is frequently constrained by its sluggish reaction kinetics and strong dependence on dissolved oxygen in practical applications. Herein, we report an innovative strategy for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysis mediated by defect engineering, which provides a new insight into boosting the kinetic process of ECL performance in the Luminol/H 2 O system. In this study, Ferrocene monocarboxylic acid (FcCA) was coordinatively linked to the topological framework of nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (NiBDC MOFs) to construct Fc-NiBDC MOFs, achieving a significant improvement in the OER performance, leading to a 4-fold increase in the ECL intensity of Luminol. This is mainly because FcCA induces coordination defects at adjacent Ni sites, creating a high density of oxygen vacancies to facilitate the conversion of reactive oxygen species (ROS). At the same time, by utilizing its strong adsorption ability for hydroxyl groups, it can significantly increase the local concentration of ROS at the active sites. Furthermore, the introduced Fc/Fc + redox cycle continuously accelerates the generation and transformation of ROS, thereby constructing an efficient ROS cyclic regeneration mechanism. This triple synergistic enhancement effect can effectively promote the sustained generation and efficient enrichment of ROS, thereby significantly improving the ECL efficiency of Luminol immobilized on NiBDC MOFs through amide bonds. The biosensor constructed on this basis was applied for the highly sensitive detection of E.coli , with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.33 CFU mL −1 . This strategy pioneers a new pathway for the defect engineering in MOF-based ECL systems, offering a versatile platform for pathogen diagnostics.

CoMo carbide/nitride from bimetallic MOF precursors for enhanced OER performance

Yuanyuan Guo,Qi Huang,Junyang Ding,Li Zhong,Ting-Ting Li,Junqing Pan,Yue Hu,Jinjie Qian,Shaoming Huang

The rational design and facile synthesis of transition metal-based catalysts supported by carbon nanomaterials with high activity, selectivity and stability remain a great challenge. Recently, the low-cost, stable and high-performance electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) derived from porous metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors have attracted numerous attention. Herein, a new type of CoMo carbide/nitride embedded in the flower-like carbon materials ( CoMo-MI-T , MI = 2-Methylimidazole, T = 400, 500, 600, 700 °C) has been synthesized by a simple pyrolysis , in which bimetallic CoMo-MI precursors can be conveniently converted from crystalline cobalt-based MOFs of Co-MI by solvothermal reaction. The pyrolyzed CoMo-MI-T series exhibits a hierarchically porous nanostructure, high Co 3 Mo 3 C/N content, suitable N-doping, graphitic carbon layers as well as well-preserved flower-shaped morphology, which shows an excellent OER performance. Among them, the most optimal CoMo-MI-600 owns the small overpotential of 316 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 89.9 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH solution. Meanwhile, the rotating ring-disk electrode technique is examined to verify near 4-electron transfer process for CoMo-MI-600 together with a high Faradaic efficiency of 98.7%. The well-performed CoMo-MI-600 electrocatalyst may be stemmed from the best balance of the synergistic effect of abundant multi-component, suitable electrical conductivity and large porosity. The current work will provide a new route to prepare MOF-derived bimetallic active sites in porous carbon nanomaterials with satisfactory activity and robust stability in the relevant energy applications .

Preparation of Yolk–Shell-Structured CoxFe1−xP with Enhanced OER Performance

Song Yue,Shanshan Wang,Qingze Jiao,Xueting Feng,Kun Zhan,Yiqing Dai,Caihong Feng,Hansheng Li,Tongying Feng,Yun Zhao

Graphical Eggselent electrocatalysts : Yolk–shell Co x Fe 1− x P microspheres are fabricated by phosphidation of cobalt ferrite precursors and used as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Among the as-prepared Co x Fe 1− x P with various Co/Fe ratios, CoP, FeP, solid CoFeP, cobalt ferrite microspheres, and commercial IrO 2 , Co 0.47 Fe 0.53 P exhibits the best OER performance, including small overpotential, low Tafel slope, and high stability in alkaline medium. The design and development of low-cost, highly efficient, and stable electrocatalysts to take the place of noble-metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remain a significant challenge. Herein, the synthesis of yolk–shell-structured binary transition metal phosphide Co x Fe 1− x P with different Co/Fe ratios by phosphidation of a cobalt ferrite precursor is reported. The as-synthesized Co x Fe 1− x P catalysts were used for the OER. All yolk–shell Co x Fe 1− x P catalysts with different Co/Fe ratios showed much better performance than the corresponding solid catalyst. The formation of Co oxides on the catalyst surface during OER and the optimal Co/Fe ratio were found to be critical to their activity. Among the as-prepared Co x Fe 1− x P catalysts, that with a Co/Fe ratio of 0.47/0.53 (Co 0.47 Fe 0.53 P) exhibited the best performance. Co 0.47 Fe 0.53 P has an overpotential of 277 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 37 mV dec −1 , and superior stability in alkaline medium. The outstanding performance is partly ascribed to the transfer of valence electrons from Co to P and Fe. The Co 0.47 Fe 0.53 P matrix with excellent conductivity and Fe phosphate that is stable on the surface of the catalyst are also helpful for the OER performance. In addition, the yolk–shell structure of Co 0.47 Fe 0.53 P increases the contact area between electrolyte and catalyst. These characteristics of Co 0.47 Fe 0.53 P greatly improve its OER performance. This optimized binary transition metal phosphide provides a new approach for the design of nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts.

Binary-dopant promoted lattice oxygen participation in OER on cobaltate electrocatalyst

Lina Tang,Tingting Fan,Zhou Chen,Jianling Tian,Hongquan Guo,Meilan Peng,Fan Zuo,Xianzhu Fu,Meng Li,Yunfei Bu,Yang Luo,Jianhui Li,Yifei Sun

Lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) on perovskite oxides for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process has revealed kinetic superiority over conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). However, feasibly enhancing the participation of lattice oxygen is still challenging. Here we designed a perovskite cobaltate (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.8 Fe 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 3-δ , LSCFM) nanofiber, and discovered that the co-incorporation of Fe/Mn elements significantly intensifies the involvement of lattice oxygen for OER. Compared with its mono-dopant (Fe or Mn only) counterparts, the LSCFM gives rise to higher surface oxygen vacancies (V o ) concentration and faster oxygen ion diffusion coefficient, endowing a small overpotential of 343 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and low Tafel slope of 63 mV dec −1 . The strongest pH-dependent activity and metal–oxygen covalency are further unveiled on LSCFM by experimental and theoretical approaches, evidencing that the promoted OER kinetics on LSCFM predominantly stems from the formation of reactive lattice oxygen site.
