The development of carbon-encapsulated alloy catalysts, through a rational design that integrates highly active Me-N-C sites, is essential for improving the reaction kinetics of both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). This advancement is pivotal for the progression of efficient rechargeable zinc-air batteries (RZABs). In this study, we investigates a CoNi alloy decorated N-doped carbon nanotube (CoNi-NCNT) electrocatalyst using a dual-ligand strategy. Experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations reveales that the electronic modulation of the 3 d orbitals of the CoNi alloy by the CoN 3 sites enhances electronic conductivity during the ORR/OER process, leading to exceptional bifunctional activity. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrates the outstanding performances of CoNi-NCNT, with a half-wave potential of 0.81 V (versus RHE) for ORR and a low overpotential of 1.52 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the CoNi-NCNT catalyzed Zn-air battery exhibits a remarkable specific capacity of 780 mAh g −1 and an exceptionally extended lifespan exceeding 800 h. This underscores the potential of this alloy strategy in the development of high-performance bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysts.

Interface engineering has been recognized as one of the most promising strategies for tuning the catalytic properties of catalysts. However, building well-defined nanointerfaces for efficient oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) remains a challenge. Herein, a hollow heterostructure composed of highly-dispersed CoTe 2 inside the mesoporous walls of nitrogen-doped carbon nanoboxes and uniformly-dispersed NiTe 2 outside the mesoporous walls (H-CoTe 2 /NiTe 2 @NCBs) is designed via a ZIF67-involved etching-anchoring-tellurization strategy. Promising half-wave potential of 0.86 V and overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 are obtained by H-CoTe 2 /NiTe 2 @NCBs. The excellent ORR/OER activity of H-CoTe 2 /NiTe 2 @NCBs is ascribed to the synergistic coupling based on nanointerfaces between CoTe 2 and NiTe 2 . Density functional theory calculations confirm that the nanointerface-based electronic coupling between CoTe 2 and NiTe 2 facilitates the charge transfer between two components and generates abundant catalytically active sites at the heterointerface, thereby significantly promoting the ORR/OER activities. This work provides the design principles for transitional bimetallic tellurides as bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Searching for high-quality air electrode catalysts is the long-term goal for the practical application of Zn–air batteries. Here, a series of coexistent composite materials (CoNi/NHCS-TUC-x) of cobalt–nickel supported on nitrogen-doped hollow spherical carbon and tubular carbon are obtained using a simple pyrolysis strategy. Co and Ni in the composites are mainly present in the form of alloy nanoparticles, M–Nx and M–Cx (M = Co or Ni) species, with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electroactivity. The materials containing different proportions of spherical carbon and tubular carbon obtained by simply adjusting the raw materials for generating tubular carbon exhibit interesting bifunctional performance: samples with an abundant tubular content have the highest ORR onset potential (0.91 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), while those with a rich spherical content have the highest ORR current density (5.13 mA·cm–2). Furthermore, CoNi/NHCS-TUC-3 provides the lowest potential difference (ΔE = Ej=10 – E1/2) of 0.806 V. We then test the potential possibility of CoNi/NHCS-TUC-3 as an air electrode for primary and rechargeable Zn–air batteries. The primary battery delivers an open-circuit potential of 1.59 V, a peak power density of 361.8 mA·cm–2, and a specific capacity of 756.5 mA h·gZn–1. The rechargeable battery could be cycled stably for more than 55 h at 10 mA·cm–2. These characteristics make CoNi/NHCS-TUC-3 a superior electrocatalyst for both the ORR and OER, as well as a suitable bifunctional electrode applied to a rechargeable Zn–air battery.

Enhancing the exposure of active sites and optimizing the electronic structure of the catalysts are indispensable for efficient catalyst design, yet remains challenging in the renewable energy field. Herein, a sequential pyrolyzing and phosphating approach for a well-designed GO/CoTPP gel precursor has been explored to prepare a Co-based carbon catalyst containing single-atom Co-N x and hollow Co 2 P active species (Co 2 P/Co-N-C) for multifunctional electrocatalytic reactions. Kirkendall effect occurring during the template-free one-pot phosphating approach induced the formation of the hollow Co 2 P structure in the catalyst, simultaneously optimizing the electron structure and allowing the active sites to be exposed to a greater extent. DFT calculations demonstrated that the Co 2 P and Co-N x structures enable Co 2 P/Co-N-C to have a suitable d-band center depending on the electron transfer from Co 2 P to Co-N x , which enhances the adsorption of O* and the dissociation of OH* in oxygen electrode reactions, thereby facilitates catalytic reactions. As a result, the Co 2 P/Co-N-C exhibits excellent trifunctional activity with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V in alkaline for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), overpotentials of 330 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 190 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, which are among the best results reported to date for Co-containing carbon-based catalysts. Furthermore, the flexible Zinc-air battery with Co 2 P/Co-N-C electrodes also demonstrates a high open circuit voltage of 1.35 V, which is applied to build the self-powered device for water splitting continuously. Our work provides a facile strategy to prepare high-performance trifunctional catalysts by morphology/structure control of metal-based NPs on carbon-based materials.

Through a facile, stepwise approach that includes electropolymerization, calcination, a hydrothermal method and low-temperature adsorption, a carbon array was coated with RuO2/MnO2 to form a highly efficient composite catalyst (RuO2/MnO2@carbon array) for Li–O2 batteries. The unique, hierarchical, three-dimensional array-type structure facilitates electrode wetting and oxygen transport as well as providing a large volume for Li2O2 loading. The growth of MnO2 nanosheets on the carbon array surface alters the surface roughness and provides attachment sites for the subsequent loading of catalyst nanoparticles. In addition, the introduction of RuO2 induces the formation of Mn3+ on the surface of MnO2, which not only improves the electrode conductivity but also the catalytic activity for ORR/OER. As a result, conformal growth of thin layers of Li2O2 on the surface of the RuO2/MnO2@carbon array and reversible decomposition of Li2O2 during cycling were achieved. In comparison with cathodes without a carbon array or catalyst, the Li–O2 cell with a RuO2/MnO2@carbon array cathode exhibits an markedly improved performance with high discharge capacity (10 000 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and long cycling life (252 cycles at 200 mA g−1 with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g−1).

Preparation of an advanced bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst is important for fuel cells, water splitting, etc. Herein, we report an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst with CoNi alloy nanoparticles uniformly distributed on nitrogen-doped carbon (N–C) nanospheres through a simple melamine-assisted pyrolysis strategy, in which a soft template approach is employed to prepare wrinkled N–C nanospheres. The Co 3 Ni 1 -N–C electrocatalyst exhibits higher onset potential (E 0 = 0.960 V vs. RHE (Reversible hydrogen electrode)), half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.81 V vs. RHE), and limiting diffusion current (j L = 5.5 mA cm −2 ) for ORR. Meanwhile, Co 3 Ni 1 -N–C electrocatalyst has a lower overpotential of 0.360 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm −2 for OER, and a lower value for Tafel slope of 100 mV dec −1 , a potential difference between OER and ORR (ΔE = E j=10 -E 1/2 ) with a ΔE value of 0.779 V vs. RHE, which is close to the benchmark ΔE value of the combination of commercial noble metal catalysts (Pt/C-RuO 2 , 0.744 V vs. RHE). In addition, Co 3 Ni 1 -N–C also shows remarkable stability, maintaining a relative current of 81.45% after 10 h at 0.8 V. The relative current of Co 3 Ni 1 -N–C is also found to be stable, superior to commercial Pt/C by 34.5%. These excellent properties are due to its unique wrinkled structure, large surface area, and high content of CoNi-Nx and pyridine nitrogen active centers.

The development of efficient and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the commercialization of rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, the pyrolysis of a precursor containing g-C 3 N 4 , thiourea, cobalt chloride and ferric chloride was used to fabricate S, N co-doped carbon nanotubes functionalized with Co 3 Fe 7 alloy nanoparticles (CoFe/S-N-C). The obtained CoFe/S-N-C catalyst exhibited an ORR half wave potential of 0.855 V ( vs . RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, outperforming a commercial Pt/C catalyst ( E 1/2 = 0.844 V). The catalyst also demonstrated superior OER catalytic activity (1.588 V at 10 mA cm −2 ) relative to RuO 2 in 0.1 M KOH, thus displaying outstanding bifunctional ORR and OER activity. A rechargeable Zn-air battery fabricated using CoFe/S-N-C shows good very performance (maximum power density of 120 mW cm −2 with a specific capacity of 814 mAh g −1 ) which was superior to a Zn-air battery fabricated using Pt/C and RuO 2 as ORR and OER catalysts (92 mW cm −2 and 787 mAh g −1 , respectively). Further, the fabricated battery using CoFe/S-N-C showed good stability, offering a discharge voltage ∼ 1.10 V and a recharge voltage ∼ 2.15 V at 10 mA cm −2 over 300 cycles, evidence of the durability of the CoFe/S-N-C catalyst.

Exploring efficient and durable non-noble metal catalysts toward oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is of practical significance in advancing Zn-air batteries. Herein, we introduce a three-dimensional (3D) bifunctional electrocatalyst (Fe/Ni@NSC) consisting of N, S-dual doped mesoporous carbon nanosheets/carbon nanotubes embedded with abundant FeS/FeNi nanoparticles and Fe/Ni-N x sites by integrating rod-like ZIF-L@S-g-C 3 N 4 with Fe/Ni-phen complex and subsequent pyrolysis. The 3D structure not only offers a high surface area for active sites but also accelerates O 2 transport/charge transfer. Leveraging the synergistic effect of the 3D porous carbon network and multiple active sites, Fe/Ni@NSC exhibited outstanding activities in both ORR (half-wave potential, 0.868 V) and OER (overpotential, 317 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), indicating a low potential gap of 0.679 V, outperforming the Pt/C + RuO 2 benchmarks (0.695 V). The Zn-air batteries based on Fe/Ni@NSC achieved a promising open circuit voltage (1.47 V), peak power density (172.59 mW cm −2 ), as well as long-term cycling stability (370 h). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrated that the interfacial electronic interaction between FeS and FeNi effectively boosted the bifunctional catalytic performance for ORR/OER. This study lays the foundation for designing low-cost and efficient 3D structure non-noble metal catalysts for more energy conversion and storage devices.

Electrocatalytic materials with dual functions of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have received increasing attention in the field of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) research. In this study, bifunctional CoNC@NCXS catalysts were prepared by anchoring Co and N co-doped CoNC on N-doped carbon xerogel sphere (NCXS) based on the spatially confined domain effect and in-situ doping technique. CoNC@NCXS exhibited excellent ORR/OER activity in alkaline electrolytes with the ORR onset potential of 0.99 V, the half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.78 V at 10 mA cm −2 and the OER overpotential of 360 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . These excellent catalytic activities were derived from constructing composite active structures and enhancing electrocatalytic efficiency. The ZAB assembled with CoNC@NCXS catalyst had a discharge specific capacity of 710 mAh g −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which was superior to that of the Pt/C&RuO 2 catalyst-assembled battery (667 mAh g −1 ). After running for 150 h, the charge and discharge efficiency of the CoNC@NCXS battery decreased by only 12.8%, which confirmed the excellent stability of the CoNC@NCXS catalyst. The free energy diagrams showed that, CoNC@NCXS has lower energy barriers and higher potential than CoNC in key reaction steps. This study provides a new perspective for the structural design of highly active composite catalysts in energy storage and conversion.

Carbon-based catalysts with free-standing structure are essential for rechargeable zinc-air battery as electrodes, which can avoid the side effects brought by organic binder. However, the current preparation methods still can be improved for faster preparation process and morphology control. In this study, we reported a fabrication strategy of self-standing carbon catalyst loaded with Co 3 Fe 7 nanoparticles and carbon nanotube as air electrodes for liquid rechargeable zinc-air battery. With a rapidly prepared PAN film used as substrate, ZIF with both Fe and Co elements are loading as active site precursor, which a composite structure of Co 3 Fe 7 nanoparticles and carbon nanotube will form on the free-standing catalyst surface after the carbonization process. In this structure, the carbonated PAN film substrate will provide rich conductive paths to promote electron transfer during the reaction process, and the active sites on the surface can promote the contact between intermediates and active sites. The optimized catalyst FeCo@CP-1:1 has the best ORR/OER bifunctional catalytic activity, which exhibits a halfwave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.89 V (vs. RHE) for the ORR and a potential of 1.47 V at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 (E 10 ) for the OER. It can be attributed to the excellent ORR catalytic activity of Co 3 Fe 7 nanoparticles and its reconstruction process in OER. Furthermore, FeCo@CP-1:1 exhibits a power density of 154 mW cm −2 and long cyclic stability in liquid ZABs application. This research lays a practical foundation for design and synthesis of free-standing carbon catalyst.

Despite the ultrahigh energy density of rechargeable lithium–oxygen (Li-O2) batteries, their practical use is still hindered by the poor performance of electrocatalysts. Recently, porous and hollow nanostructured catalysts have been found to be promising electrocatalysts toward the ORR/OER to improve the performance of Li-O2 batteries. However, the catalytic activities of the catalysts are still insufficient and the nanopores are easily clogged by the insoluble discharge products. Herein, highly porous and hollow TiO2–x nanoboxes (TiO2–x NBs) with large surface areas, increased oxygen vacancies, and high grain boundary density have been developed as an electrocatalyst for Li-O2 batteries via a cation-assisted synthetic approach. The Li-O2 batteries with TiO2–x NBs as the electrocatalyst exhibit a high specific capacity of 8569 mA h g–1, excellent rate capability, and long cycle life up to 200 cycles when the capacity is limited to 1000 mA h g–1. Moreover, this cation-assisted approach for fine-tuning the nanostructure could be an innovative strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts for high-performance Li-O2 batteries.

Transition metal oxygen evolution/reduction reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts applied to Zn–air batteries (ZABs) have been extensively investigated, but the problems of transition metal electrocatalysts being prone to agglomeration and deactivation at high temperatures and the insufficient stability of the existing single carbon-based catalysts still exist. Herein, we present a dual-substrate strategy that confines first FeNi alloys in N-doped porous carbon shells and then embeds them onto dual-substrate nanofibers of Ti4O7 and C (FeNi/NC@Ti4O7-CNFs) by electrostatic spinning and annealing treatments. The domain-limiting effect provided by the porous carbon shells disperses the alloys and there is a strong synergy between the alloys and the N-doped carbon shells to modify the electronic structure. Additionally, Ti4O7 has excellent stability even in strongly alkaline environments. Accordingly, abundant M–NX active sites are achieved by the triple synergistic effect of Ti4O7 and C formed dual-substrate nanofibers, N-doped porous carbon shells, and highly dispersed alloys. The prepared FeNi/NC@Ti4O7-CNFs demonstrated a lower ORR and OER potential difference (ΔE = 0.656 V) than Pt/C and RuO2. The liquid ZAB assembled with this catalyst has a cycle life of more than 320 h. This work provides a valuable strategy for developing highly active catalysts for application in advanced electrochemical energy devices.
