Os/Si nanocomposites as excellent hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts with thermodynamically more favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy than platinum

Yafei Cheng,Xing Fan,Fan Liao,Shunkai Lu,Youyong Li,Liangbin Liu,Yanqing Li,Haiping Lin,Mingwang Shao,Shuit-Tong Lee

The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is a fundamental undertaking of the hydrogen economy . Herein, we investigated the electrocatalytic performance of M/Si (M = Os, Rh, Pt, Pd, Re, Ru, Au or Ag) nanocomposites for hydrogen evolution reaction. The results show that Os/Si nanocomposites exhibit the best catalytic efficiency with a negligible onset overpotential (−25   mV), a small Tafel slope of −24   mV   dec −1 and remarkable long-term stability. Of most importance, at a current density of the typical industrial production (−1000   mA   cm −2 ), the energy conversion efficiency of the Os/Si nanocomposite is 29.3% higher than that of the commercial 40   wt% Pt/C. The density functional calculations reveal that such outstanding catalytic activity of the Os/Si catalyst arises from the thermodynamically more favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (Δ G H* = −0.03   eV) at the osmium/silicon interfaces than that on platinum (Δ G H* = −0.09   eV) or osmium (Δ G H* = −0.26   eV).

Dual bio-active factors with adhesion function modified electrospun fibrous scaffold for skin wound and infections therapeutics

Jiao Jianhang,Peng Chuangang,Li Chen,Qi Zhiping,Zhan Jing,Pan Su

Electrospun fibrous scaffolds combined with bioactive factors can display impressive performance as an ideal wound dressing, since they can mimic the composition and physicochemical properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The aim of this study was to fabricate a new composite biomaterial (IGF1-DA and Os-DA-modified PLGA electrospun fibrous scaffold) for wound healing, using a rat model for experimental evaluation. A small pentapeptide tag composed of DA–Lys–DA–Lys–DA residues was introduced into insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and the antimicrobial peptide Os to prepare IGF1 and Os modified with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DA) (IGF1-DA and Os-DA). The designed chimeric growth factor and antimicrobial peptide could successfully anchor to PLGA electrospun fibrous scaffolds, and the growth factor and antimicrobial peptide could be controllably released from the electrospun fibrous scaffolds. The results showed that the IGF1-DA and Os-DA-modified PLGA electrospun fibrous scaffolds (PLGA/Os-DA/IGF1-DA) exhibited high hydrophilicity and antimicrobial activity; moreover, the porous network of the scaffolds was similar to that of the natural ECM, which can provide a favourable environment for BALB/C 3T3 cells growth. The in vivo application of PLGA/Os-DA/IGF1-DA electrospun fibrous scaffolds in rat skin wounds resulted in improved wound recovery and tissue regeneration rate. The experimental results indicated that the IGF1-DA and Os-DA could effectively bind to PLGA electrospun fibrous scaffolds, promote wound healing and prevent infection in rats, thereby suggesting that PLGA/Os-DA/IGF1-DA electrospun fibrous scaffolds have a wide application value in the field of skin wound repair.

A novel approach to achieve Os isotope equilibration under ambient conditions for negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry (N-TIMS) analysis

Jin-Hua Liu,Xiao-Dong Deng,Jian-Wei Li,Lan-Ping Feng,Thomas J. Algeo

The rhenium–osmium (Re–Os) isotopic system has emerged as a widely utilized tool in cosmochemistry and high-temperature geochemical studies. A critical prerequisite for high-precision Os isotope analysis via Negative Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (N-TIMS) involves achieving complete isotopic equilibrium between the sample and spike through the isotope dilution technique. In this study, we present an innovative technique to address valence state disparities in Os species within mixed solutions, thereby enabling effective isotopic equilibration through a chemical reducing reaction with a strong reductant under ambient conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that a solution containing 0.05 mol L−1 hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH·HCl) coupled with 0.01 mol L−1 HBr effectively stabilizes a nanogram-level Os mass. Systematic optimization of reductant concentration and sample-to-reductant ratio yielded a mean 190Os/188Os value of 1.2280 ± 0.0006 (2s, n = 18) for a mixed Os spike solution, closely aligned with the recommended value of 1.2278 ± 0.0003 (2s, n = 12) obtained through the conventional Carius tube method. Controlled comparative experiments revealed critical considerations for method implementation: (1) a freshly prepared reductant must be employed immediately to ensure reagent efficacy, and (2) precise absolute volume control of the reductant solution is essential to mitigate potential losses of volatile OsO4 linked to extended decomposition times. This novel approach successfully achieves isotopic equilibration between sample–spike and inter-spike components under ambient conditions, offering significant analytical advantages over traditional methods. The validity of the proposed approach was demonstrated by analyzing reference material WMS-1a yielding a 187Os/188Os value of 0.1665 ± 0.0006 (2s, n = 5), which agrees within uncertainty with the established value of 0.1664 ± 0.0003 (2s, n = 5) obtained via the Carius tube method. The protocol enhances operational efficiency by reducing equilibration time and explosive risk, and decreases procedural Os blanks via reducing material and reagent consumption. The combined improvements in precision, cost-effectiveness, and methodological flexibility position this technique as a valuable advancement in Os isotope geochemistry.

High-Performance Cement Composites Achieved by Synergistic Modification of In-Situ Polymerized AM and Gelatinized OS for Interpenetrating Polymer-Cement Networks

Bing Yin,Zekun Wang,Zhihao Lin,Xueling Yin,Jiahui Lin,Dongshuai Hou,Haoyu Wang,Chaohong Liu

Polymer modification has demonstrated effectiveness in improving fracture resistance and mitigating brittleness in cement-based materials. However, conventional modification methods result in compromised strength or an imbalance in mechanical properties. This study develops an innovative dual-network modification strategy through the synergistic combination of in-situ acrylamide (AM) polymerization and oxidized starch (OS) gelatinization in cement-based materials. The gelatinized OS forms a homogeneous framework that regulates moisture, while the in-situ formed polyacrylamide (PAM) interacts with it to create an interpenetrating network. This unique structure refines the polymer morphology and enhances the interface with cement hydrates. The resulting composite demonstrates a 103% increase in 28-day flexural strength compared to plain cement. Furthermore, the composite maintains superior performance over both in-situ polymerization-modified specimens and conventional polymer-modified systems, retaining 12% higher 28-day flexural strength and 19% greater compressive strength than AM in-situ polymerization modified samples. Microstructural analysis indicates that the approach optimizes hydration and promotes stress redistribution. This work suggests that controlled dual-network interpenetration offers a promising pathway to mitigate the traditional strength-toughness trade-off in cement-polymer composites.

Effect of H2O2 induced oxidative stress (OS) on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and intracellular metabolism in MCF-7 breast cancer cells

Yuanling Liu,Wenwen Li,Yixiang Duan

Oxidative stress (OS) refers to the process of oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) accumulated by the organisms or cells during the process of generating and scavenging oxygen free radicals. In this study, an OS model of MCF-7 cells was constructed through H2O2-treatment, which for the first time combined volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and intracellular metabolic analysis for a comprehensive and in-depth study of the OS effect on cell metabolism. The VOCs produced by cells in H2O2-treated groups and control groups were extracted with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Meanwhile, the intracellular metabolites were extracted by methanol and analyzed by GC-MS coupled with silyl-derivatization. The results indicated 15 VOCs and 29 intracellular metabolites were statistically different (p < 0.05) between the H2O2-treated groups and the control groups. The VOC biomarkers were mainly linear chain alkanes and branched chain alkanes, and they were up-regulated in cells treated by H2O2. The intracellular metabolites with significant changes were mainly fatty acids, amino acids, and organic acids. Most of them, however, were down-regulated under OS state. This study revealed volatile and non-volatile metabolites that influenced by elevated OS in MCF-7 cells, and provided clues for mechanism exploration of exhaled biomarkers, thus promoting the non-invasive prediction of BC.

Balancing the galvanic replacement and reduction kinetics for the general formation of bimetallic CuM (M = Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt) hollow nanostructures

Lin Han,Pengfei Wang,Hui Liu,Qiangqiang Tan,Jun Yang

Tailoring the internal structure and chemical composition of nanomaterials is an effective way to enhance their performance for a given application. Herein, we report a general wet-chemistry approach to produce copper (Cu)-based binary hollow nanostructures with well defined architectures and investigate their catalytic properties in electrochemical reactions. This strategy relies on the galvanic replacement between Cu seeds and noble metal precursors including ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), osmium (Os), iridium (Ir), and platinum (Pt) in oleylamine at an appropriate temperature, which is essential to balance the reduction kinetics of the noble metal precursors by oleylamine during their galvanic replacement with Cu seed particles. Typically, the bimetallic CuPt hollow nanostructures with polyhedral morphologies exhibit enhanced catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while their spherical counterparts obtained at a relatively low temperature show high activity for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In particular, we will also demonstrate a unique application of the CuRu hollow nanostructures in supercapacitors after converting them into binary metal oxides at elevated temperatures in air.

Determination of Platinum-Group Elements and Re-Os Isotopes using ID-ICP-MS and N-TIMS from a Single Digestion after Two-Stage Column Separation

Jie Li,Xiao-Ying Jiang,Ji-Feng Xu,Li-Feng Zhong,Xuan-Ce Wang,Gui-Qin Wang,Pei-Pei Zhao

en This link goes to a English section fr This link goes to a French section We report an improved procedure for the determination of the platinum-group elements (PGE) and Re, and Os isotopes from a single sample aliquot by isotope dilution (ID) using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and negative thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (N-TIMS), respectively. A two-stage column method was used to purify PGE-Re from their sample matrix and interfering elements (e.g., Mo, Zr and Hf) after Os had been separated by CCl 4 solvent extraction. The first column separation step used cation exchange resin (AG50W-X8) to concentrate PGE-Re and some potential interfering elements (e.g., Mo, Zr and Hf). In the second step, N -benzoyl- N -phenylhydroxylamine (BPHA) extraction resin was used to separate PGE-Re from the remaining interfering elements, which all remained strongly absorbed to the resin. The method was used to determine the PGE and rhenium, and Os isotope ratios in a range of geochemical reference materials (TDB-1, WGB-1, BHVO-2 and UB-N). The obtained results agree well with those previously published.

Synergistic electronic and water microenvironment regulation via metallic heterointerfaces for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Linqi Shi,Zijian Gao,Lisong Zhong,Pengcheng Zhao,Baoyu Qi,Chunxin Xu,Zhaohui Jin,Liu Yang,Zhongwei Chen

The pursuit of high-performance and robust hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts tailored for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is crucial yet profoundly challenging. Here, we engineer a metallic heterointerface by embedding ultrafine Os nanoparticles within vertically aligned NiCo alloy nanoflower arrays anchored on the macroporous Ni foam scaffold (Os@NiCo/NF), achieving synergistic modulation of interfacial electronic states and water microenvironment. In-situ Raman spectroscopy unveils that the Os-NiCo interface dynamically restructures interfacial water networks, transitioning from tetrahedrally coordinated water to free water, which enhances reactant accessibility and accelerates water dissociation. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that metal-support interactions induce charge redistribution, synergistically reducing the water dissociation barrier while optimizing hydrogen adsorption energy. When Os@NiCo/NF is deployed as the cathode in the AEMWE device, it achieves an industrial-relevant current density of 1.4 A cm −2 at a voltage of 2 V, while consistently maintaining steady operation at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 120 h. This work presents a novel perspective on synergistic interface engineering, unlocking the efficiency potential of the next generation electrocatalysts.

Bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation of m6A and cuproptosis-related lncRNA NFE4 in clear cell renal cell carcinoma

Feng Rui,Li Haolin,Meng Tong,Fei Mingtian,Yang Cheng

Purpose This study aimed to construct an m6A and cuproptosis-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) signature to accurately predict the prognosis of kidney clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) patients using the information acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Methods First, the co-expression analysis was performed to identify lncRNAs linked with N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and cuproptosis in ccRCC. Then, a model encompassing four candidate lncRNAs was constructed via univariate, least absolute shrinkage together with selection operator (LASSO), and multivariate regression analyses. Furthermore, Kaplan–Meier, principal component, functional enrichment annotation, and nomogram analyses were performed to develop a risk model that could effectively assess medical outcomes for ccRCC cases. Moreover, the cellular function of NFE4 in Caki-1/OS-RC-2 cultures was elucidated through CCK-8/EdU assessments and Transwell experiments. Dataset outcomes indicated that NFE4 can have possible implications in m6A and cuproptosis, and may promote ccRCC progression. Results We constructed a panel of m6A and cuproptosis-related lncRNAs to construct a prognostic prediction model. The Kaplan–Meier and ROC curves showed that the feature had acceptable predictive validity in the TCGA training, test, and complete groups. Furthermore, the m6A and cuproptosis-related lncRNA model indicated higher diagnostic efficiency than other clinical features. Moreover, the NFE4 function analysis indicated a gene associated with m6A and cuproptosis-related lncRNAs in ccRCC. It was also revealed that the proliferation and migration of Caki-1 /OS-RC-2 cells were inhibited in the NFE4 knockdown group. Conclusion Overall, this study indicated that NFE4 and our constructed risk signature could predict outcomes and have potential clinical value.
