Using a microwave-assisted ball-milling approach, Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were prepared from FeSO4·7H2O and trimesic acid. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray, and thermogravimetric analysis were utilized to characterize the thermal stability and structure of the prepared Fe-MOFs. These Fe-MOFs were used to remove organic dyes from aqueous solutions. Specifically, they removed 96.97% of 23.3592 mg/L of Congo red in a 200 mL solution within 300 min of treatment with natural light at 15 °C. Likewise, 88.21 and 70.90% of 22.7527 mg/L of Orange II and 17.8326 mg/L of Rhodamine B, respectively, were removed from 200 mL solutions within 300 min of treatment at 15 °C. At 35 °C, 99.57, 95.98, and 99.38% of 23.3855 mg/L of Congo Red, 22.7365 mg/L of Orange II, and 17.9973 mg/L of Rhodamine B, respectively, were removed from 200 mL solutions within 300 min of treatment. The adsorption kinetics were investigated and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model was found to be superior to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Overall, using metal-organic frameworks to treat dye wastewater was found to be inexpensive, feasible, and efficient. Therefore, this material has future prospects in research and applications in the purification of wastewater. Keywords:wastewater treatment;metal-organic frameworks;dye removal;microwave-assisted ball milling

We report a 3D-hierarchically Co 3 O 4 /graphene hydrogel (CGH) composite as a catalyst activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfate radical-based degradation of Orange II in a heterogeneous system. The physicochemical performance of the composite is analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectra, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the samples are prepared resoundingly. The CGH hybrid composite completely removes Orange II wastewater within 6 min; furthermore, after five runs, the catalyst activity remains essentially unchanged and the macrostructure is followed consistently. This unusual macrostructure hydrogel of supported cobalt oxide indicates a high feasibility of commercial promotion to remove the azo dye.

In this study, copper phosphide (Cu 3 P) was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation and Orange II degradation. This catalyst functions over a broad pH range, from 3.0 to 9.0 and the degradation rate of Orange II is 95.2% at 15 min under optimal conditions. The rapid degradation kinetics can be described by the Behnajady-Modirshahla-Ghanbery (BMG) equation. Sulfate radical, the main reactive oxidizing species, along with OH and O 2 − , were responsible for pollutant degradation. The Cu 3 P catalyst exhibited good stability and excellent anti-interference performance toward Cl − , NO 3 − , and HCO 3 − anions. The removal efficiency of Orange II remained close to 100%, even after five rounds of recycling reactions. The rapid catalytic mechanism of Cu 3 P is attributed to the dual-catalysis center in Cu 3 P (Cu and P) and simultaneous existence of three cycles ( Cu II → Cu III → Cu II , Cu I → Cu II → Cu I , and Cu δ+ → Cu 1+δ+ → Cu δ+ ) on the surface and interior of Cu 3 P. This study sheds new light on the fabrication of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts to solve the environmental problems.

CuBi 2 O 4 is widely used in photocatalytic degradation for pollutants in water due to its strong visible light response characteristics, excellent chemical stability, non-toxic, and low cost. Here, stone-shaped CuBi 2 O 4 was prepared with CuO and Bi 2 O 3 as raw materials by high temperature solid phase. The effect of calcined temperature and time on the product was discussed. This material was analyzed and discussed by XRD, SEM, XPS, and DRS, and the visible light activity of degradation for Orange II was explored. The results showed that the absorption edge of prepared CuBi 2 O 4 expands to the visible region, and the band gap was about 1.77 eV. The photocatalytic degradation rate of Orange II was 42.6% under the optimal conditions. After H 2 O 2 assisted, the degradation rate was more than 2 times, and repeated experiments verified that the prepared catalysts had high stability. Finally, a reasonable mechanism of H 2 O 2 assisted degradation enhancement is proposed. This work gives new ideas for the preparation of new and efficient catalytic materials.

The presence of residual azo dyes, such as Orange II, and organic antibiotic pollutants, such as tetracycline hydrochloride, in water and soil environments is a growing global concern. Conventional water treatment technologies often show limited effectiveness in removing these contaminants. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a method to modify triazole using ammonium chloride and presents the successful construction of a carbon nitride/indium sulphide (C 3 N 5 /In 2 S 3 ) photocatalyst with nitrogen–sulphur dual vacancies using an in situ growth approach. Systematic characterisation and evaluations of the structure and performance of the material revealed that the modified C 3 N 5 exhibited significantly enhanced crystallinity and formed an intimate 2D/2D interfacial structure with In 2 S 3 . Coupled with an S-scheme heterojunction, the nitrogen–sulphur dual vacancies jointly enhanced the capacity for light absorption, improved the separation efficiency of charge carriers, and optimised the redox potential. When exposed to a 300 W xenon lamp, the degradation rate constants of the C 3 N 5 /In 2 S 3 catalyst for Orange II and tetracycline hydrochloride were 11.51 and 16.62 times that of the singly modified C 3 N 5 and 3.91 and 1.92 times that of pure In 2 S 3 , respectively, demonstrating significant photocatalytic synergy. The C 3 N 5 /In 2 S 3 catalyst maintained good stability, with its degradation efficiency decreasing by only 7.6 % after four consecutive cycles. Moreover, it adapted to a wide pH range, ionic environments, and sunlight exposure, indicating its potential for applications in real water bodies. Provides innovative design principles and experimental evidence for developing highly efficient S-type heterojunction photocatalysts with dual vacancy regulation mechanisms, paving the way for expanded environmental remediation applications.

The degradation of Orange II (Org II) by ferrous activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was inspected. The maximum degradation efficiency of 62.3% in 90 min occurred at 0.286 mM [PMS] 0 , corresponding to 1:1 molar ratio of Fe 2+ : PMS. Results show that poor recovery of Fe 2+ accounts for poor degradation in the slow stage. The species of reactive radicals were determined through indirect way by quenching agents, as well as directly by in situ EPR spin trapping tests. Results indicated that hydroxyl radicals instead of sulfate radicals were responsible for Org II degradation. The removal of Org II degradation would increase to 93.3% in 90 min as reaction temperature increased to 60 °C. The activation energy for PMS and Fe 2+ /PMS alone was calculated to be 77.2 kJ/mol and 34.7 kJ/mol, respectively. The removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was 11.0% and 43.8% when [Fe 2+ ] 0 :[PMS] 0 :[Org II] 0 was 5:5:1 and 34:34:1, respectively. The main degradation products of Org II in system were supposed to be heterocyclic compounds containing a five-atom ring. Results demonstrated that Fe 2+ /PMS technology is promising technology for water pollution.

The coexistence of aliovalent cations may facilitate the formation of electronic and ionic defects, altering the catalytic properties of manganese oxide. In this paper, a series of mixed-valent manganese oxides (MnOx) were prepared by a hydrothermal route and tested for heterogeneous activation of peroxydisulfate for Orange II degradation in aqueous solution. The morphology, crystal structure and surface chemistry of the MnOx were adjusted by the addition of ethanol in the hydrothermal process. The physicochemical properties were characterized and evidence from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) indicated that MnOx exhibited a mixed crystal phase structure of Mn2O3, Mn3O4 and MnO2. The catalytic properties of the three samples prepared with 5%, 10%, and 20% volume fractions of ethanol (denoted as MnOx-5, MnOx-10, and MnOx-20) were found to be related to the valent states of Mn, and MnOx-10 exhibited a better performance with a mole ratio of Mn4+/ Mn2+ close to 1.0. The electrochemical characterization demonstrated that MnOx-10 performed a more effective redox process which may determine the catalytic activity of MnOx. Moreover, quenching tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used to evaluate the possible activation processes of peroxydisulfate (PDS) and the intermediates of Orange II degradation. This catalyst preparation strategy provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency environmental catalysts.

Zero-valent copper activated peroxymonosulfate (ZVC/PMS) system was widely used to degrade refractory contaminants due to being highly effective. However, the low reactivity and easy dismutation of cuprous species (Cu(I)) in acid condition limited its efficiency. In our study, ZVC coupled with ferrous ion (Fe(II)) promoted PMS to degrade orange II. Multiple oxidants including Cu(III), OH and SO 4 − made main contribution on orange II degradation in the Fe(II)/ZVC/PMS system. In the Fe(II)/ZVC/PMS system, ZVC generated Cu(I) by H + corrosion and PMS oxidation, and Cu(I) reacted with oxygen producing hydrogen peroxide. Then, Fe(II) and Cu(I) catalyzed hydrogen peroxide and PMS to generate Cu(III), OH and SO 4 − , and thereinto Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) by ZVC and Cu(I). In the Fe(II)/ZVC/PMS system, water matrix including humic acid, sulfate and nitrate had no significant impact on orange II degradation, while chloride restrained the degradation of orange II. The Fe(II)/ZVC/PMS system exhibited great degradation for orange II in tap water, lake water and well water. Additionally, the Fe(II)/ZVC/PMS system degraded more than 90% of methyl orange, rhodamine B, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, propranolol and diclofenac. Through adjusting the final reaction solution to pH 8.5 and subsiding, the discharge of total copper met the II-level environmental quality standards for surface water in China (1 mg/L). Hence, the study provided a promising method to induce PMS for enhanced degradation of contaminants.

NiO and CeO 2 composite metal oxides (NiO–CeO 2 ) were synthesized by sol-gel method to investigate a degradation system by persulfate (PS) activation with the assistance of visible light (Vis). The phase composition of NiO–CeO 2 was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of NiO–CeO 2 was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the element composition and valence state of the NiO–CeO 2 . In the Vis/PS/NiO–CeO 2 system, the degradation rate of Orange II using a concentration of 50 mg/L was as high as 90% in 15 min but it increased to as high as 99% in 60 min. Mechanism studies have shown that the combination of NiO and CeO 2 generated more oxygen vacancies , and activated persulfate to generate active oxygen species. Moreover, the effects of visible light , persulfate concentration and pH were evaluated, and the results showed that the participation of visible light and persulfate could significantly increase the degradation efficiency of Orange II, but pH had little effect on the degradation. Quenching experiments and detection by ESR showed that O 2 ‾, •SO 4 ‾, •OH, and 1 O 2 all contribute to the removal of Orange II. In addition, the recovery and reuse properties of NiO–CeO 2 may lead to sustainable treatment of wastewater.

The Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene with unique lamellar nanostructure and high conductivity is expected to effectively improve photocatalytic ability of composites as a cocatalyst. Herein, two dimensional Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene nanosheets decorated with copper sulfide particles (CuS@MXene) were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment to boost catalytic persulfate (PS) activation under light, exhibiting remarkable reactivity and stability for the rapid removal of Orange II. The phase composition of CuS@MXene was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of CuS@MXene was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the elemental composition and valence state of elements in the CuS@MXene. The dosage of PS and initial pH of solution were the main factors affecting the removal rate of Orange II, and the quenching experiment showed that 1 O 2 was the primary reactive species for the removal of Orange II in CuS@MXene -PS system. In addition, this study showed that CuS@MXene provided bi-active centers for PS activation, which was mainly attributed to the rapid charge transfer between dual electron-rich active centers of Cu and Ti. This system may be applicable to the degradation of other challenging organic pollutants .

In meeting the need for environmental remediation in wastewater treatment and the development of popular sulfate-radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), a series of Co/Fe-based catalysts with confirmed phase structure were prepared through extended soft chemical solution processes followed by atmosphere-dependent calcination. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy were employed to characterize the composition, morphology, crystal structure and chemical state of the prepared catalysts. It was shown that calcination in air, nitrogen and ammonia atmospheres generated Co-Fe catalysts with cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), Co-Fe alloy and Co-Fe nitride as dominant phases, respectively. The prepared Co/Fe-based catalysts were demonstrated to be highly efficient in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for organic Orange II degradation. The activation efficiency of the different catalysts was found to increase in the order CoFe2O4< Co-Fe nitride < Co-Fe alloy. Sulfate radical was found to be the primary active intermediate species contributing to the dye degradation for all the participating catalysts. Furthermore, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed for each of the studied catalysts. This study achieves progress in efficient cobalt-iron catalysts using in the field of SR-AOPs, with potential applications in environment remediation.Keywords:Co-Fe catalysts;advanced oxidation processes;peroxymonosulfate activation;sulfate radical

BACKGROUND Synthetic dyes are present in the wastewater from many industrial processes and they cause serious problems to human and aquatic life. The development of a novel and effective peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator is proposed to eliminate dyes pollution. A new magnetic nanocomposite, Fe 3 O 4 @C/MnCo 2 O 4 , was prepared and characterized. The activity of Fe 3 O 4 @C/MnCo 2 O 4 as heterogeneous catalyst for PMS activation was evaluated by the decolorization of Acid Orange II (AO II). RESULTS With a ‘Fe 3 O 4 @C/MnCo 2 O 4 + PMS’ system, the dye solution could be nearly completely decolorized in about 25 min over a wide pH range (pH 4.1−8.1), and 98% removal could be achieved in 15 min without pH adjustment (pH = 6.38). The influence of solution pH, dosage of catalyst and PMS, reaction temperature, and PMS activation mechanism were studied. It was found that sulfate radicals were the primary species responsible for the oxidation of AO II. The catalyst was magnetically separable and displayed good stability and reusability, giving six cycles of use without deterioration in its performance. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the simple recycling and high activity of Fe 3 O 4 @C/MnCo 2 O 4 composite in PMS activation for the decolorization of AO II solution. It provides a promising way for the decontamination of organic pollutants. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry
