Enhancing Pt/Co separation selectivity of P204-P507/XAD-4 resins through Dual-Site modulation involving alkaline activation and HFIP masking

Yin Pang,Zhuolin Qi,Lei Cao,Wei Qi,Junfeng Mao,Yukun Huang,Haifeng Cong,Xingang Li,Jiawei Wen

Dual-site modulated P204-P507/XAD-4 resin separates Pt/Co efficiently. • Alkaline activation of P-OH groups significantly boosts Co(II) capture. • HFIP effectively shields P=O sites to suppress Pt(IV) co-adsorption. • The Co/Pt separation factor achieves a nearly ten-fold improvement. • DFT and XPS reveal decoupled pathways via synergy-through-inhibition. The efficient recovery of platinum (Pt) and cobalt (Co) from spent proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) catalysts is vital for the sustainable hydrogen economy, yet their deep separation from acidic leachates is hindered by the inherent affinity property of organophosphorus extractants. In this study, a dual-site regulation strategy was developed using a synergistic P204-P507/XAD-4 solvent-impregnated resin (SIR). By combining alkaline activation to enhance P–OH cation-exchange capacity (boosting Co(II) uptake from 40.19 ± 0.31 to 47.26 ± 0.58 mg/g at pH 7.0) as well as the hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) masking to selectively shield P=O sites via competitive hydrogen bonding (suppressing Pt(IV) adsorption from 7.60 ± 0.66 to 3.78 ± 0.47 mg/g at pH 3.0), the competing adsorption pathways were effectively decoupled. Experimental results showed that the dual-modified resin achieved a Co(II) adsorption capacity of 47.26 ± 0.58 mg/g and an exceptional separation factor (SF Co/Pt ) of 248.85 ± 10.19 at pH 7.0, representing an approximately ten-fold improvement over the unmodified composite. Mechanistic investigations via XPS and DFT calculations indicated that Co(II) is predominantly captured through P–OH sites, while the binding energy shifts in P=O groups are primarily attributed to a secondary inductive effect rather than direct coordination. Furthermore, in continuous fixed-bed operation, the resin exhibited a wide separation window with Co(II) breakthrough delayed to 55 bed volumes, delivering a Pt-enriched effluent with 99.1% purity at 97.0% recovery, while the retained Co(II) was quantitatively eluted at 96.6% purity. The resin also retained over 90% of its initial Co(II) adsorption efficiency after three consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles. and offering a mechanism-driven approach for precision metal adsorbent design.

Preparation of P507-containing monodisperse magneto-permeable polystyrene swelling microspheres for extraction of low-concentration scandium from simulated red mud liquor

Jie Wang,Jinghan Ren,Rui Feng,Chenxi Li,Chenxin Shi,Mingqi Guo,Tianlei Yang,Yueping Guan

Preparation process of monodisperse magnetically permeable polystyrene microspheres. • Magnetically permeable swollen polystyrene microspheres containing P507 can serve as a microextraction material. • The microspheres rapidly extract Sc 3+ from simulated red mud liquor, reaching equilibrium in 8 min at O;A phase ratios of 1:40–1:80. • The organic liquid content and polystyrene content in the microspheres are 21% and 27%, respectively. In this study, monodisperse polystyrene microspheres with an average particle size of 3.81 μm were first synthesized via dispersion polymerization combined with seed swelling polymerization. The resulting microspheres exhibited a uniform particle size and intact morphology. Subsequently, monodisperse magnetically permeable polystyrene microspheres were fabricated using a swelling–permeation method, which preserved the structural integrity of the microspheres while imparting high saturation magnetization, enabling rapid magnetic separation under an external magnetic field. The extractant P507 and the diluent 1, 2-dichloroethane were then loaded into the microspheres via an emulsion swelling process. The resulting functionalized microspheres featured uniform particle size, strong magnetic responsiveness, superparamagnetism, and favorable stability. Extraction experiments were conducted using a simulated red mud leachate solution containing 20 ppm Sc 3+ . Under conditions of pH 0.5 and an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio (O/A) ranging from 1:40 to 1:100, the extraction equilibrium was achieved within only 2–8 min, with a maximum extraction efficiency exceeding 95%. These results demonstrate excellent rapid mass transfer performance and efficient adsorption.

Selective separation of Fe and Ga from Al-rich HNO3 leach liquor using sequential solvent extraction

Shuyang Shi,Chen Yang,Baozhong Ma,Hui Yang,Zhihe Cao,Yubo Liu,Yongqiang Chen,Chengyan Wang

Ga exhibits enrichment in coal-based solid waste, establishing it as a promising alternative source for Ga recovery. The HNO 3 pressure leaching process effectively achieves simultaneous leaching of Al and Ga while retaining most of the Fe in the residue. However, separating Ga from acidic solutions containing Fe and Al remains a persistent challenge in hydrometallurgy due to their similar physicochemical properties. Herein, a simplified and effective two-stage sequential solvent extraction process using acid phosphorus extractants (P507 and P204) for selective Ga recovery was proposed. Under optimized conditions, P507 removed 97.2 % of Fe from coal gangue HNO 3 leach liquor with limited co-extraction of Ga (10.1 %) and Al (5.7 %). Subsequent P204 extraction recovered 99.2 % Ga with only 9.1 % Al co-extraction from the Fe raffinate. Stripping with 2 mol·L –1 H 2 SO 4 yielded 88.0 % Ga recovery, with the extractants showing excellent regeneration and cycling performance. Mechanistic studies including FT-IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS, and stoichiometric analysis confirmed coordination through both P = O and P–O–H groups, forming Fe(HA)A 3 and Ga(HL)L 3 complexes (A = P507; L = P204 ligands), respectively. This study presents a highly efficient approach for the separation of Fe/Ga/Al and Ga recovery from HNO 3 leach liquor, featuring exceptionally low acid depletion.

Combination of Phosphoric Acid Extractants P507, P204, or Cyanex272 with LIX984 for Accelerated Extraction of Nickel in Spent Electroless Nickel Plating Baths

Rong Zha,Ying Huang,Ling Zhu,Jiali Tan,Zhenfeng Xiong,Baoyan Chi

Hydroxamic acid extractants, such as LIX984, demonstrate high efficiency in extracting nickel from electron-free nickel waste solutions; however, they suffer from a slow extraction rate. This study investigated the effect of adding 2–5 vol.% of three organophosphate extractants (P507, P204, and Cyanex272) to LIX984. The results show that incorporating 2–5 vol.% of P507 or Cyanex272 significantly improves both extraction efficiency and kinetics. The addition of organophosphate extractants increased the extraction rate by 1.5–10 times, indicating a direct correlation between the extractant content and the acceleration of the extraction process, with higher concentrations yielding faster extraction. Compared to the use of LIX984 alone, where nickel extraction efficiency was only 46%, the addition of 5 vol.% P507 increased efficiency to over 99%, with a substantial improvement in extraction rate. Similarly, 2 vol.% P204 achieved a nickel removal efficiency of 99.8%. In non-electroplating waste solutions (pH 4–6), selective removal of iron and zinc impurities was achieved by first adding 2–5 vol.% P204 or P507, followed by adjusting the pH to 6–7 and using a mixture of organophosphate extractants. The spent electroless nickel plating baths were then treated with LIX984 combined with organophosphoric acid extractants, yielding nickel salt solutions of higher purity. Thus, P507, P204, and Cyanex272 serve as effective promoters for the hydroxamic acid extractant LIX984, resulting in both enhanced nickel extraction efficiency and faster extraction kinetics.
