High-resolution temperature sensor fabricated with composed PEDOT: PSS/CuPc for electronic skin

Jing Li,Hai Nie,Guoyun Zhou,Yan Hong,Wei Meng,Yongkang Zhu,Qinghua Huang

Flexible, biocompatible temperature sensors are of great importance for future developments in wearable electronic skin. Herein, a high resolution, fast response, biocompatible negative temperature coefficient (NTC) temperature sensor comprised of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) and phthalocyanine copper (CuPc) is developed. The addition of CuPc with high electron mobility to PEDOT: PSS increases the effective electron transition under the action of thermal energy , and thus its thermoelectric performance of the material is improved. The packaged sensor can monitor temperature changes in the range of 20 °C to 80 °C in real time with high sensitivity (0.1940% °C −1 ), linearity (R 2 =0.994) and accuracy (0.1 °C). When the ambient temperature of the sensor changes from 25 °C to 50 °C, the response and recovery time of the sensor are ∼ 1 s. The performance of the sensor has not decreased significantly after 4 weeks of continuous operation, which validates the high reliability of the sensor in the extended working time. Furthermore, the comparison between the PEDOT: PSS/CuPc sensor and commercial infrared thermal imager on different parts of the human body temperature measurement shows that the PEDOT: PSS/CuPc sensor is applicable in electronic skin, medical detection and other fields.

Disposable blood potassium sensors based on screen-printed thick film electrodes

Hui Xu,Xiaoxi Yang,You Wang,Junbao Zheng,Zhiyuan Luo,Guang Li

A sensor based on the screen-printing technique for the rapid blood potassium test was developed. The sensor consists of a thick film potassium ion-selective electrode and a reference electrode. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was screen-printed on carbon electrodes as an internal solid contact layer for both ion-selective and reference electrodes. PVC membranes with and without selective ionphore valinomycin were coated on the PEDOT/PSS layer to form potassium ion-selective and reference electrodes, respectively. The potentiometric response characters were evaluated. The response time of the sensor was 15 s when less than 15 µL of sample was applied. The sensitivity of the potassium sensor was around 60 mV per decade, while the potentiometric log selectivity coefficients were −3.43 and −3.48 for Na+ and Ca2+, respectively.

PEDOT/PSS Heterointerface Enables Integrated Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Thermal Protection in Aerogel Composite

Ziwen Sun,Quan Yuan,Liwei Yan,Junyu Lu,Weiyi Ding,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

Traditional high-density thermal protection systems (TPSs) limit the maneuverability of hypersonic vehicles while lacking stealth capabilities. In this work, we propose a strategy to integrate electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal protection in an aerogel composite by introducing a PEDOT:PSS heterointerface via ethanol-assisted gel impregnation. Ethanol also functions as secondary doping, enabling tuning of the electromagnetic parameters of the aerogel by adjusting the doping level. This can achieve a balance between microwave attenuation and impedance matching in the aerogel, leading to excellent broadband microwave absorption with a minimum reflection loss of −37 dB at 30 mm thickness and an effective bandwidth of 13.3 GHz. During ablation, the PEDOT:PSS heterointerface can also induce a thermal blocking effect that can suppress the melting of high-silica fiber, helping maintain the three-dimensional skeletal support of fiber felt, thereby enhancing the aerogel composite’s resistance to oxyacetylene flame attack. Therefore, the aerogel composite exhibits a low linear ablation rate of 0.03 mm/s under 1 MW/m2 and, after 96 s of exposure to 1800 °C flame, maintains a backside temperature of only 61 °C. This work provides a feasible strategy for achieving integrated electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal protection in aerogel composites, which has potential for next-generation lightweight TPS applications.

Structurally tunable conductive wood sponge incorporated with PEDOT: PSS for enhanced piezoresistive sensor applications

Wu You,Liu Junhui,Hu Zhengchuan,Zhou Weibo,Wu Wei,Wang Jieqiong,Ao Yuhui,Li Ming

Wearable strain sensors are gaining popularity in the field of intelligent electronic devices due to their compactness and mobility. In this study, we presented a wearable, pliable piezoresistive sensor derived from a wooden sponge integrated with the conductive polymer PEDOT. The conductive network of PEDOT: PSS underwent modulation through the incorporation of a cross-linking agent, namely, γ - glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GOPS), aimed at enhancing the sensor's sensitivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that GOPS cross-linked with PEDOT: PSS. Crosslinking induced by GOPS helped PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. Benefitting from this micro-network structure, the wood sponge/PEDOT:PSS/GOPS (WPG) exhibited a high sensitivity of 5.69 kPa −1 and a fast response time of 111 ms, with exceptional stability and durability (over 500 cycles), making it suitable for detecting subtle muscle changes. Crosslinking induced by GOPS induced PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. The micro-network structure presented a novel approach for designing piezoresistive sensors.

Scalable and High-Performance Infrared Electrochromic Devices Enabled by Solvent-Engineered PEDOT/PSS Films

Wenchao Liu,Leipeng Zhang,Dongqi Liu,Rui Yang,Zetuo Lv,Yike Zhang,Lei Xu,Qiumei Jiang,Yuqiang Wang,Jiupeng Zhao,Yao Li

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) based infrared electrochromic devices (IR-ECDs) show great potential for dynamic thermal management applications. However, their practical deployment is limited by a slow response, poor cycling stability, and scalable fabrication challenges. In this study, we report a scalable, solution-processed strategy for fabricating large-area, flexible PEDOT/PSS IR-ECDs using a one-step solvent post-treatment to selectively remove insulating PSS. This treatment markedly enhances film conductivity, which, in turn, accelerates charge transport and facilitates robust electrochromic switching. The resulting devices demonstrate rapid switching behavior, excellent cycling stability, and a notable mid-infrared emissivity modulation (Δε8–14 μm) of 0.23. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that IR modulation of PEDOT/PSS arises primarily from conductivity changes driven by reversible ion doping/dedoping. When the conductivity exceeds ∼500 S/cm, its long-wave IR reflectance closely follows predictions from Drude theory. This study not only offers new insights into the IR electrochromic mechanism of PEDOT/PSS but also opens up opportunities for scalable, cost-effective, and high-performance thermal modulation technologies with potential applications in adaptive concealment, information display, and intelligent thermal regulation.

A flexible humidity sensor based on GO/PEDOT: PSS modified laser-induced graphene electrode

Yang Song,Ronghui Dan,Lei Li,Xiaojuan Xia,Jiang Zhao,Rongqing Xu

The potential of ubiquitous humidity monitoring is unlocked through the presentation of a novel, highly flexible sensor, which is fabricated using a dramatically simplified and cost-effective method, challenging existing complex manufacturing approaches. Specifically, this study utilizes a laser direct writing technique that is both efficient and rapid for the fabrication of flexible laser-induced graphene (LIG) interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). By skillfully integrating graphene oxide (GO) and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS), a flexible GO/PEDOT: PSS@LIG humidity sensor has been successfully developed. This sensor cleverly harnesses the distinctive properties of both PEDOT: PSS and GO, giving rise to a noteworthy synergistic effect that greatly boosts the humidity sensing capabilities of the GO/PEDOT: PSS composite. The sensor demonstrates a capacitive sensitivity of 1493561.67 μF/% RH spanning from 11 % to 97 % RH. Furthermore, it exhibits exceptional response and recovery times (5 and 16.5 s, respectively), along with commendable stability. These features guarantee efficient and precise real-time monitoring. Such remarkable sensing attributes position the flexible GO/PEDOT: PSS@LIG humidity sensor as a highly promising candidate for deployment in non-contact sensing domains, including environmental and respiratory monitoring.

PEDOT: PSS-Based Microfluidic-Spun Microfibers for Tunable Release of Acetaminophen via Electrical Stimulation

Ying Fang,Na Qiao,Heli Deng,Meng Ren,Yufan Zhang,Desuo Zhang,Hong Lin,Yuyue Chen,Ken Tye Yong,Jiaqing Xiong

Transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) is effective in alleviating patient's pain and reduces frequent administration. Realizing tunable drug release on fibers/fabrics is important for constructing TDDS platform with good skin affinity and long-term comfortability. Herein, a conductive fiber consisting of polyvinyl pyrrolidone/sodium alginate/ acetaminophen/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (PVP/SA/AAP/PEDOT: PSS, PSAP) is fabricated by core-shell microfluidic spinning technology for the controllable release of AAP, a typical pain reliever. Incorporation of conductive fillers endows fibers with microcracks that are responsive to electrical stimulation for promoting drug diffusion and release. The release rate of AAP in simulated body fluid can be improved from 70.81% to 92.07% under electric stimulation, demonstrating a regulable release process enabled by tunable fiber conductivity and applied voltage (0–1.5 V). The drug release kinetic model reveals Fickian diffusion dominates the release process of AAP that generates local concentration difference in the microcracked PSAP fiber with electrical stimulation. This work proposes an accurate fabrication strategy of fibers-based TDDS that is promising for wearable biomedical electronics and self-powered on-demand drug delivery systems.

You Wang,Hui Xu,Xiaoxi Yang,Zhiyuan Luo,Jianming Zhang,Guang Li

An all-solid-state sensor based on screen-printing technique for rapid blood calcium test was studied. The sensor consists of a thick film calcium ion-selective electrode and a pseudo-reference electrode. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was screen-printed on carbon paste electrodes as internal solid contacts for both the ion-selective and reference electrodes. PVC membranes with and without neutral carrier ETH129 were coated on the PEDOT (PSS) layer to form calcium ion-selective and pseudo-reference electrodes, respectively. The properties of screen-printed PEDOT (PSS) film on carbon paste electrode were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) methods. The response time of the calcium sensors was 15   s while less than 15   μL sample was applied. And the sensitivity was 30.0   ±   1.0   mV per decade, while the potentiometric log selectivity coefficients were −3.80, −3.35 and −4.60 for Na + , K + and Mg 2+ . Other properties of the calcium sensors were evaluated, including the temperature effect, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. The testing results with the calcium sensors were compared with those with a routine hospital electrolyte analyzer. The clinical trial results reveal that the all-solid-state calcium sensor is promising for the point of care testing.

PEDOT–PSS Surface-Coated Warp-Knitted Spacer Structure for Thermoelectric–Piezoelectric Dual-Mode Flexible Sensor

Xu Lei,Liu Yuhui,Ding Jiawei,Liu Wei,Wang Pengzhi,Zhang Shujie

Intelligent wearable fabrics featuring multimodal sensors capable of detecting human physiological signals have attracted considerable attention for next-generation health monitoring applications. Piezoelectric and thermoelectric functional polymers can be simultaneously engineered into fiber-based architectures; however, their sensitivity and synergistic response under multiple physical fields remain insufficiently understood and require systematic investigation. In this work, a three-dimensional flexible PPSF sensing unit with dual thermoelectric and piezoelectric response characteristics was developed by uniformly coating PEDOT/PSS onto the surface and PVDF spacer filaments of a 3D spacer fabric via in situ polymerization combined with phase separation, followed by post-treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylene glycol (EG). The fabrication process, surface morphology, and thermoelectric and mechanical properties, as well as air permeability of the PPSF, were comprehensively characterized. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and power factor were systematically evaluated. The optimized PPSF (5 vol % DMSO, 2 h EG treatment, 3 mm thickness) achieved a Seebeck coefficient of 25.6 μV K –1 , an electrical conductivity of 0.33 S·cm –1 , a power factor of 84.7 μW·m –1 ·K –2 at room temperature, and a rapid response time of approximately 1 s under Δ T = 1 K. Thirty p-/n-type PPSF sensing units were integrated in thermal parallel and electrical series to fabricate a pressure–temperature dual-mode flexible sensor, delivering output voltages of 15.3 mV (Δ T = 10 K) and 60.1 mV (Δ T = 40 K). Output voltage stability tests showed a slight initial decline within 5 min, followed by a stable plateau. In finger-pressing experiments, the flexible sensor independently and simultaneously responded to temperature and pressure stimuli, generating distinct voltage and current signals.

Continuous and scalable preparation of highly conductive PEDOT: PSS-based fibers for wearable smart textiles

Chunxia Gao,Liang Zhang,Chuanyun Zhao,Ziwei Chen,Jiadeng Zhu,Qiang Gao

Flexible electronic fabrics have garnered significant attention for their promising prospects in next-generation wearable electronic devices. However, fabricating flexible fabrics that simultaneously possess high conductivity, mechanical adaptability, energy conversion/storage,portability and comfort remains a critical challenge. Herein, multifunctional PEDOT: PSS/[BMIM]HSO 4 fibers were continuously fabricated via a wet-spinning technique using a green and cost-effective coagulation bath composed of DI water and 0.05 M 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([BMIM]HSO 4 ). The fibers exhibited high conductivity (772.6 S· cm −1 ), favorable mechanical flexibility (elongation at break: 40.8% with Young's modulus of 107.1 MPa), along with excellent antibacterial activity, flame retardancy, and biocompatibility. Meanwhile, the assembled fibers-based supercapacitors displayed a high mass-specific capacitance (41.4 F·g −1 at a current density of 0.025 A·g −1 ) and good cyclic stability (93% capacitance retention after 1200 charge-discharge cycles). These superior properties enable the PEDOT: PSS/[BMIM]HSO 4 fibers to be woven into wearable smart fabrics, which exhibit excellent moisture wicking, breathability, and UV resistance. Meanwhile, this smart fabric can realize self-cooling in hot environments and electrical heating in cold conditions, demonstrating potential application for personal thermal management. Furthermore, the constructed PEDOT: PSS/[BMIM]HSO 4 fiber-based electrodes can effectively monitor various human motions as well as electrocardiography (ECG) signals. Thus, this study provides a green and facile strategy for designing advanced PEDOT: PSS-based fibers with high conductivity and opens up new avenues for the development of wearable electronics for energy conversion/storage, personalized healthcare monitoring, and human-machine interaction.

Enhanced electrochemiluminescence of luminol-DBAE system based on self-assembled mesocrystalline hybrid for the detection of ovarian cancer marker

Dandan Fang,Mian Pan,Huan Yi,Hong Dai,Zhensheng Hong,Xiangqin Zheng,Yanyu Lin

Herein, an enhanced lectrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor was designed based on an efficient ECL bioprobe and first realized the quantitative analysis of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4). To obtain the efficient ECL bioprobe, a self-assembled mesocrystalline hybrid (TiO 2 MCs@rGO) was first prepared for loading luminol and 2-(Dibutylamino)ethanol (DBAE), which was explored as a new coreacant of luminol for the first time and triggered more stable and efficient ECL intensity than conventional luminol-H 2 O 2 system. Additionally, the high surface area and outstanding conductivity of TiO 2 MCs@rGO would effectively amplify the ECL intensity. Besides, the synthesized macromolecular complex (PEDOT/PSS/NiCo 2 O 4 NS) integrated the excellent conductivity of PEDOT/PSS and highly porous of NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets was served as an efficient sensing matrix for further improvement of the analysis sensitivity. The developed ECL immunosensor exhibited excellent performance in the analysis of HE4 with a wide linear range of 1.0 × 10 −5 ˜1000 ng/mL and low detection limit of 3.3 × 10 −6 ng/mL, especially superior stability. The strategy provided promising application for early ovarian cancer monitor and diagnosis, and provoked a new idea for other tumor markers detection.
