Although poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) exhibits excellent solvent resistance , it could not be prepared directly by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method due to its poor solubility. Herein, PEEK porous membranes were successfully fabricated by combining NIPS and acid hydrolysis. The superhydrophilic thermo-responsive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) polymer was in-situ grafted on the PEEK membrane surface via the UV grafting polymerization and improved the membrane interface hydrophilicity, making the membrane water contact angle changed from 89.5° to 0° at 25 °C. After heating the membrane surface to 40 °C, the membrane exhibited hydrophobicity (100°), realizing the thermo-responsiveness via switching the temperature. Furthermore, due to the transferred membrane wettability at different temperatures, PEEK-g-PNIPAm could separate different types of oil-bearing systems with high rejection above 99.0 %. What’s more, the PNIPAm layer also enhanced the membrane anti-fouling capacity. Benefiting from the extraordinary solvent resistance of the PEEK matrix, PEEK-g-PNIPAm maintains its intact morphology after 6 h immersion in various organic solvents , addressing the commonly reported problem of polymer membranes having certain solubility in solvents. The PEEK-based membranes with excellent solvent resistance could be useful in the oil-bearing separation.

Implant-associated infections and excessive immune responses are two major postsurgical issues for successful implantation. However, conventional strategies including antibiotic treatment and inflammatory regulation are always compromised due to the comodification of various biochemical agents and instances of functional interference. It is imperative to provide implant surfaces with satisfactory antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, a dual-effect nanostructured polyetheretherketone (PEEK) surface (NP@PDA/Zn) with bionic mechano-bactericidal nanopillars and immobilized immunomodulatory Zn2+ is designed. The constructed hybrid nanopillars display remarkable antibacterial performance against Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains through the synergy of physical and chemical bactericidal effects imposed by nanopillars and Zn2+. Meanwhile, the immunoregulatory property is evaluated through the investigation of macrophage polarization both in vitro and in vivo, and the results reveal that NP@PDA/Zn could downregulate the expression of M1-related cytokines and decrease the M1 macrophage recruitment to lower the inflammatory response. Notably, the surface exhibited exceptional biocompatibility with discerning biocidal activity between bacterial and mammalian cells and antioxidant performance that effectively scavenges ROS, minimizing potential cytotoxicity. Taken together, NP@PDA/Zn presents a convenient and promising strategy of combining synergistic bactericidal activity and inflammatory regulation without any mutual interference, which can support the development of multifunctional implant-associated materials.

Nowadays, PEEK , as a kind of high performance polymer characterized with high strength , great corrosion resistance and thermal stability is regarded as a promising membrane material. In this study, PEEK fibers were prepared by melt spinning and then woven into textiles. Furthermore, interface reduction was utilized to give a more hydrophilic textile (PEEK-OH textile). In addition, considering to make full use of the huge membrane pores of the textile, a liquid-infused method was employed to regulate its surface energy and to establish an under-water oleophobic surface. Surprisingly, PEEK-OH textile functioned in not only oil/water separation, but also separating immiscible organic liquids with different polarities just through a liquid-infused approach. More importantly, we firstly introduced ‘mediator effect’ during the pre-wetting process before separation, taking ethanol as a ‘mediator’. Furthermore, according to the ‘mediator effect’, an under-oil hydrophobic membrane was established using dichloromethane as a ‘mediator’. As we expected, both PEEK and PEEK-OH textiles revealed features such as high flux, admirable selectivity, competitive strength, great corrosion resistance and thermal stability, herein, they promised to be used for oil/water separation in practical environment.

The overall aim of the current study is to develop a dual-functional PEEK implant to simultaneously fight off bacterial contamination and promote osseointegration by sustained release of moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MOX) and osteogenic growth peptide (OGP) from mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA)-coated porous sulfonated PEEK (SPK) surface. Our study revealed that the MOX/OGP PDA-modified SPK (SPD-MOX/OGP) surface exhibited a durable and excellent antibacterial effect against planktonic/adherent Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in vitro . A remarkable enhancement in specific cell adhesion, proliferation and osteogenicity were observed on the SPD-MOX/OGP substrate due to the presence of OGP and PDA molecules compared to all other groups. More significantly, using the infected and non-infected rat tibia models confirmed the in vivo antimicrobial and osteogenesis abilities of SPD-MOX/OGP. Therefore, we are confident that such dual-functional PEEK surface with both antibacterial and osseointegrative capacities in this study would give a positive answer to periprosthetic joint infection-related issues.

Despite the impressing advances on sizing agents for CF/PEEK composites, the aromatic backbone of the polymer precursors utilized in the vast majority of reports compromises the dispersity and ductility of the slurry, subsequently resulting in inferior overall performance of the composites. Meanwhile, most resins employed for sizing agents in existing reports are based on petroleum resources. Herein, a bio-based waterborne sizing agent utilizing semi-aromatic poly ether ketones (PIEK-C) derived from isosorbide and phenolphthalein has been disclosed, featured by its salutary dispersity, exceptional thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures, and broader applicability. Due to the structural similarity between the sizing and resin matrix, the protocol endowed CF/PEEK composites with ameliorated overall performance, addressing issues related to inadequate adhesion of CF with PEEK resin, as well as environmental pollution commonly associated with existing commercial epoxy and solvent-based sizing agents. The T g and T 5% of PIEK-C-5050 were 205.08 and 427.16°C, respectively. The particle size range of the PIEK-C sizing agents spanned from 66.32 to 84.63 nm. The flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the composites experienced a respective 993.92 MPa (30.73%) and 83.32 MPa (36.97%) increase compared to untreated CF/PEEK composites following sizing treatment with PIEK-C-5050, underscoring expedient intermolecular interactions based on comparable solubility and π-π stacking effects between the PEEK and PIEK-C components. This study introduced an efficient and eco-friendly approach to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites. Highlights PIEK-C resin is employed for the first time to prepare carbon fiber sizing agents. The PIEK-C sizing agent significantly fortified the surface energy and wettability of carbon fibers. The CF/PEEK composites after treatment with PIEK-C sizing agent showed excellent heat resistance. The ILSS and bending strength of the composites were significantly increased by 36.97% and 30.73%, respectively.

Poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) fabric is extensively utilized in aircraft engine noise reduction systems owing to its low nonlinear coefficient, wide operational temperature range, and superior flame-retardant characteristics. However, the insufficient adhesion strength between unmodified PEEK fabric and epoxy resin frequently leads to delamination damage, compromising noise reduction efficacy and posing a risk of device malfunction. Consequently, it is imperative to enhance the surface of PEEK to improve its adhesion with epoxy resin adhesives. In this study, PEEK fabric was subjected to modification through ultraviolet irradiation and plasma treatment, respectively. The findings indicated that both ultraviolet irradiation and plasma treatment significantly increased the concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups on the PEEK surface, thereby enhancing its hydrophilicity and the adhesion strength between PEEK and epoxy resin. However, extended treatment periods resulted in surface degradation, forming an oxidized layer with diminished mechanical properties, which ultimately reduced the adhesion strength between PEEK and epoxy resin. Notably, the cleaning-etching effects of plasma treatment effectively eliminated the degraded layer which has weak interaction force with PEEK, thereby augmenting the bonding strength between PEEK and epoxy resin. Among all the treatments, oxygen plasma treatment for 20 minutes achieved the highest adhesion strength, increasing the lap shear tensile strength from 249 to 618 kPa. This sample also attained an O/C ratio of 0.47 and a water contact angle of 0° at 10 s.

Preformed crowns are preferred to reduce the failure risk of restoration of primary teeth, but some drawback of conventional material is still a main barrier for their clinical use. Polyether etherketone (PEEK), a tooth colored, high-performance thermoplastic polymer, has been recognized as a promising alternative to manufacture the restoration of primary teeth. However, the hydrophobic surface and low surface energy of PEEK make it hard to establish a strong and durable adhesion. In this study, we have evaluated a modification method of polydopamine (PDA) coating with plasma pretreatment for the PEEK films by physical and chemical characterization, bonding properties, and biocompatibility. The surface properties of PEEK were well-characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adhesive strength of the PEEK films was greatly improved without significant reduction of the proliferation rate of human gingival fibroblast cells in MTT and Live/Dead assays. Therefore, PDA coating with plasma pretreatment may give a new solution for effective clinical application of PEEK in primary performed crowns.

Poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) with good biocompatibility exhibits high mechanical strengths but bioinert. In addition, tantalum (Ta) possesses outstanding osteogenesis but high density and elastic modulus , and cost. In this study, by blending Ta nanoparticles with PEEK, Ta/PEEK composite (TP) was prepared, which was then treated by concentrated sulfuric acid to form a microporous surface containing Ta particles on TP (TPS). Moreover, genistein (GS) with antibacterial property was loaded into the microporous surface of TPS (TPSG). Compared with TP, the surface properties ( e.g., surface roughness and hydrophilicity) of TPS was obviously improved because of the microporous surface including Ta nanoparticles . Moreover, TPS showed low antibacterial properties because of presence of sulfonic group while TPSG exhibited excellent antibacterial properties due to GS loaded into the microporous surface. Furthermore, compared with TP, TPS obviously promoted attachment and proliferation of MG63 cells, while TPSG with GS remarkably inducing osteogenic differentiation of the cells compared with TPS in vitro . Moreover, in comparison with TP, TPS with optimized surface properties promoted new bone regeneration and osseointegration, while TPSG loading GS further enhanced bone regeneration as well as osseointegration in vi vo. In summary, the GS loaded into microporous surface including Ta nanoparticles of TPSG exhibited antibacterial and osteogenic activity, which would have great potential for bone tissue repair.

Oil-based superlubricity introduces a novel approach to energy conservation. Facing two main obstacles at present, i.e., higher viscosity of lubricating oil and special tribopairs, a novel solid-liquid combined system is built in this work, which is mainly based on excellent tribological property of oil-soluble dialkyl-dithiophosphoric-modified Cu nanoparticles (DDP-Cu NPs) and superior self-lubricating capability of polymeric tribopairs. In this system, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is coupled with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to form a similar/dissimilar tribopair; and neat PAO40 (a real serving lubricating oil with high viscosity in poly-alpha olefin oil family), or PAO40 containing oil-soluble DDP-Cu NPs (PAO40 + Cu), is used as a lubricant during the sliding test. The results show that only dissimilar tribopair, i.e., PEEK-PTFE, can achieve oil-based superlubricity under the selected sliding conditions, which can be attributed to the synergistic effect between PEEK-PTFE tribopair and PAO40/PAO40 + 0.25 Cu. Furthermore, due to lower cohesive energy density (CED), PTFE is more likely to be transferred onto PEEK together with some tribochemical reactions, finally generating a high-performance tribofilm rich in carboxylated PTFE. In addition, it is concluded that, when lubricated with PAO40, the above synergistic effect is a key to achieve superlubricity; and for PAO40 + 0.25 Cu, the carboxylated PTFE and the exposed Cu core will create chelate effect, which can not only further enhance this synergistic effect, but also improve the wear-resistance of the system reaching near-zero wear. This work not only provides a novel idea for designing oil-based superlubricity system, but broadens the type of tribopair materials achieving oil-based superlubricity to some extent.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is widely considered as a promising material for joint implants but it still has limitations involving high friction and wear. To mimic the cartilage-subchondral bone structure in natural joints, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel layer was fabricated on the PEEK substrate to provide a lubrication mechanism. In addition, tannic acid was applied to form dynamic hydrogen bonds with PVA molecules, for the purpose of strengthening the hydrogel layer and endowing it with self-healing ability. Our experimental results demonstrated that the prepared PEEK-hydrogel composite exhibited good biotribological performance with a low average friction coefficient around 0.06 and little wear after the friction test. It also could repair the scratch made by a blade spontaneously at room temperature taking advantage of the reversibility of the hydrogen bonds. The influence of the properties of the PVA hydrogel and the concentration of tannic acid on the frictional and self-healing behavior of the composite structure was investigated and the internal mechanism was discussed. This work presents a facile method to fabricate a PEEK-hydrogel composite possessing outstanding tribological properties and self-healing capacity simultaneously, hopefully promoting its potential in producing artificial joints.

Carbon fiber/PEEK composites have gained significant attention in the field of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). However, it remains challenging to improve the weak interfacial strength between carbon fiber (CF) and PEEK matrix. In this paper, strong interactions at the interface of sizing agent and carbon fiber were effectively achieved by introducing chemical bonds. Specifically, a soluble PEEK sizing agent where aniline served as pendant group and phenylacetylene served as blocking agent was synthesized. In the meantime, the phenylacetylene group was grafted on the carbon fiber surface through electroreduction . Then, the soluble sizing agent was used to size the electrochemical treated carbon fiber. After the heat treatment, chemical bonds were established by the crosslinking reaction of phenylacetylene groups existed in both the surface of carbon fiber and sizing agent. Meanwhile, the crystalline structure in the sizing layer was remained, which could improve the toughness of the interphase. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased by 137.5% from 43.4 MPa of the untreated carbon fiber (U-CF) to 103.1 MPa of the reductive electrografted and coated carbon fiber (E-C-CF). The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) also increased by 66.8% from 58.4 MPa of untreated CF/PEEK composites (U-CF/PEEK) to 97.4 MPa of reductive electrografted and coated CF/PEEK composites (E-C-CF/PEEK). The outstanding performances could be attributed to better compatibility of sizing agent and most importantly, the existence of chemical bonds between the carbon fiber and sizing agent.

The low interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites limit their applications in harsh environments. Synergetic improvement of the interlaminar fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of CF/EP is a challenging research job. In this paper, the surface of CF/EP prepregs was coated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and PEEK, and then the modified CF/EP laminates were prepared by compression molding process. The effects of MWCNTs and PEEK on the mechanical properties and thermal properties of CF/EP laminates were investigated. The results showed that the type II interlaminar fracture toughness, impact strength, and thermal conductivity of the CF/EP laminates synergistically modified by 0.5 wt% MWCNTs, and 2 wt% PEEK reached 1404 J/m 2 , 277 J/m 2 , 0.89 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 100°C, which were 81%, 42% and 82% higher than that of unmodified CF/EP laminate, respectively. And thermal stability of CF/EP laminate was improved. The addition of MWCNTs and PEEK reduces the loss factor of CF/EP laminates. This work is of great significance to realize the integration of structure and function of composite materials in the high-performance applications.
