Underneath mechanisms into the super effective degradation of PFOA by BiOF nanosheets with tunable oxygen vacancies on exposed (101) facets

Jingzhen Wang,Chunshuai Cao,Ying Zhang,Yinqing Zhang,Lingyan Zhu

Construction of surface defects or/and exposed reactive facets is a promising strategy to improve the performance of photocatalysts . In this study, BiOF photocatalysts with tunable oxygen vacancies on the exposed (101) facets were successfully prepared by adjusting the concentration of ethylene glycol (EG). The prepared product with 50 % EG in the solution displayed remarkable photocatalytic activity for the recalcitrant pollutant perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which could be completely decomposed within 6 h. The appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancy and the exposed (101) facets synergistically promoted the electron transfer from the defective surface to O 2 . Moreover, the oxygen vacancy introduced an intermediate band, which narrowed the bandgap and lowered the energy required for electron transition. DFT calculations and LC-MS-MS results revealed the principal-attack-sites of various active substances and figure out the entire PFOA degradation pathways. These profound findings are instrumental for a comprehensive understanding of the degradation process of PFOA in photocatalytic systems.

Exposure to PFOA and its novel analogs disrupts lipid metabolism in zebrafish

Weiqiang Sun,Xuemin Zhang,Ying Qiao,Nathan Griffin,Hongxia Zhang,Li Wang,Hui Liu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a typical perfluoroalkyl group compound, has received worldwide attention due to its significant environmental toxicity. Following regulatory bans on the production and emission of PFOA, concerns have been raised about the potential health risks and the safety of novel perfluoroalkyl analogues. HFPO-DA (trade name Gen-X) and HFPO-TA are two perfluoroalkyl analogues known to be bioaccumulative, whose level of toxicity and whether they are safe alternatives to PFOA remain unclear. In the following study, the physiological and metabolic effects of exposure to PFOA and its novel analogues were explored in zebrafish using 1/3 LC 50 (PFOA 100 μM, Gen-X 200 μM, HFPO-TA 30 μM). At the same LC 50 toxicological effect, exposure to PFOA and HFPO-TA resulted in abnormal phenotypes such as spinal curvature, pericardial edema and aberrant body length, while Gen-X was little changed. Metabolically, PFOA, HFPO-TA and Gen-X all significantly increased total cholesterol in exposed zebrafish with PFOA and HFPO-TA also increasing total triglyceride levels. Transcriptome analysis showed that the number of differentially expressed genes in PFOA, Gen-X, and HFPO-TA treated conditions compared to control groups were 527, 572, and 3, 933, respectively. KEGG and GO analysis of differentially expressed genes revealed pathways and functions related to lipid metabolism as well as significant activation of the peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor (PPARs) pathway. Furthermore, RT-qPCR analysis identified significant dysregulation in the downstream target genes of PPARα, which is responsible for lipid oxidative catabolism, and the SREBP pathway, which is responsible for lipid synthesis. In conclusion, both perfluoroalkyl analogues HFPO-TA and Gen-X exhibit significant physiological and metabolic toxicity to aquatic organisms and their environmental accumulation should be closely regulated.

A scalable surface nanoarchitectonics approach for melaleuca bark-derived biochar: Rapid PFOA removal and superior supercapacitor performance

Manman Xu,Shiqi Fu,Rui Chen,Charlotte S.Q. Christensen,Cankun Chen,Yuqi Fan,Yuhan Cai,Anqi Wang,Jonathan W.C Wong

Based on the principles of sustainable development, the porous carbon material with a hierarchical structure derived from Melaleuca bark was developed and applied in environmental pollution control and energy storage. The Melaleuca bark-derived porous carbon material (MBC x ) is prepared using a scalable surface modification strategy that is a one-step carbonization and activation process. MBC 1 displays a hierarchically micro/mesopore structure with an impressive specific surface area (1956.72 m 2 g −1 ) and a substantial pore volume (1.04 cm 3 g −1 ). It retains the fibrous tubular structure of the precursor while forming interconnected mesoporous structures. As absorbent, the maximum adsorption capacity for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) of MBC 1 is 1702.12 mg/g. MBC 1 shows excellent stability and reusability, with high selectivity and removal rates for PFOA in actual fluorine-containing wastewater. MBC 1 tends to adsorb fluorine atoms compounds with a high degree of fluorination and a greater number of fluorine atoms, suggesting the dominant contribution of hydrophobic interactions. However, polyfluorinated PFAS, in which hydrogen atoms replace fluorine in the perfluorinated structure, generally exhibit reduced adsorption. For energy storage, MBC 1 exhibits efficient charge transfer and ion diffusion properties, making it suitable as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The button-type symmetric supercapacitor based on MBC 1 shows excellent electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance reaching 230.6F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 . This powerful surface engineering strategy offers a promising solution to environmental challenges, while contributing to the advancement of clean energy technologies.

The blockage of the electron transport chains caused by PFOA isomers induced metabolic damage of Arabidopsis leaves

Hao Wang,Jianxiong Mei,Zeying He,Bingjie Liu,Jishi Wang,Yue Geng,Yanwei Zhang

Different metabolic damage could be caused by PFOA isomers, although the harm mechanism has not been well studied. The effects of PFOA isomers on Arabidopsis metabolism were investigated using metabolomics, proteomics and molecular docking. Compared to Pn (linear PFOA), P3 (3 - methyl - perfluoroheptanoic acid, P3MHpA) induced a greater amount of oxidative damage and more dysregulation proteins. Both PFOA isomers caused significant metabolic disorders in oxidative stress and photosynthetic dysregulation, and they happened in similar molecular components including chloroplast and thylakoids. Proteins were more readily bound by ionic PFOA, and P3 exhibited higher ability than Pn. Isomers of the ionic PFOA bound to proteins in photosynthesis, particularly the ETC proteins, leading to a blockage of the electron transport chains in the chloroplast, which induced oxidative stress and photosynthetic toxicity. This study provides a novel and important mechanism for the photosynthetic toxicity of different PFOA isomers.

Sequential adsorption- dehalogenation removal of PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP with F-CTF as the adsorbent and hydrated electron as the reduction species

Fengxia An,Guangyan Wang,Shuyun Wang,Huan Chen,Jingliang Liu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) were typical POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) in water. In this study, fluorine-doped covalent triazine framework (F-CTF) was synthesized using an ionothermal method, and the adsorption behavior for PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP on F-CTF was investigated using batch experiments and adsorption kinetic tests. Characterization results showed that the large surface area and abundant pore structure of F-CTF provide a large number of adsorption sites for PFOA and 2, 4, 6-TCP. Batch adsorption tests showed that F-CTF adsorbent exhibited high adsorption affinity to PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP, and the adsorption ability could be described well by the Langmuir adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacity ( q max ) of F-CTF for PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP reached 262.5 mg/g and 709.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption mechanism including electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and ion-dipole interaction was further confirmed by pH and ionic strength experiments. Additionally, the UV/Na 2 SO 3 /KI system achieved 100 % degradation rate of PFOA and 2, 4, 6-TCP within 40 minutes and the influence factors were further studied. The e aq − was the main active species for the high reduction of PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP in the UV/Na 2 SO 3 /KI system.

Comprehensive adsorption behavior and mechanism of PFOA and PFCs in various subsurface systems in China

Guanhong Liu,Brittney Ashley Stewart,Kai Yuan,Siyuan Ling,Meng Zhang,Guangju Wang,Kuangfei Lin

The adsorption-desorption performance of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one of the environmentally persistent pollutants which is refractory to degrade in soil, was investigated and reported. The adsorption-desorption process of PFOA was firstly conducted using different fractions (sand, coarse silt and fine silt) of soil collected from Shanghai, China. More than 50% of PFOA (2.0 mg/L) could be adsorbed by soils while only less than 10% of which could be desorbed once contamination occurs. The kinetics and particle diffusion rates of PFOA in different fractions of soil were calculated and analyzed in detail. Apart from this, the retention of short-chained PFCs , which can be generated as degradation products of PFOA, were also measured. In single solute systems, the adsorption of pollutants in soils dramatically increased as the chain length of PFCs grew longer. Similarly, in mixed solutions, preferential adsorption of longer-chained PFCs over shorter chains in soils were sited, attributable to the stronger hydrophobicity of the pollutants. However, the desorption of them performed in reverse, where the desorption rates of longer-chained PFCs were far lower than those of shorter ones. Furthermore, influencing factors including pH, temperature and co-existing matters were studied during the adsorption process. After comprehending the adsorption behavior of PFOA in soil fractions, the situation of the adsorption of PFOA in various soils chosen from nine provinces in China was investigated and compared. There was an obvious discrepancy, whether it be from the rate or the amount of adsorption of PFOA (approximately 10%), in the nine different soils. Finally, a multiple linear regressive equation was employed to sort influencing parameters which are prone to affect the adsorption of PFOA in soils, the contribution of these are provided in order of relevance. These results demonstrate the adsorption performance and behavior of PFOA and PFCs in different soils, which can be utilized as a scientific reference for maximizing remediation of PFOA polluted sites in the future.

In situ preparation of p-n BiOI@Bi5O7I heterojunction for enhanced PFOA photocatalytic degradation under simulated solar light irradiation

Jingzhen Wang,Chunshuai Cao,Yuanyuan Wang,Yingnan Wang,Binbin Sun,Lingyan Zhu

The strong persistence, wide presence and potential toxicities of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in aquatic environment makes it a challenge to develop advanced technologies to eliminate it from water. In this study, novel BiOI@Bi 5 O 7 I p-n heterojunction photocatalysts were facilely prepared by calcinating BiOI at 350 °C < T < 410 °C. Under simulated solar light irradiation, the degradation rate constant ( k  = 0.247 h −1 ) of PFOA by the BiOI@Bi 5 O 7 I heterojunction prepared at 390 °C (T-390) was four times of that by pristine BiOI ( k  = 0.061 h −1 ) and 1.2 times of that by Bi 5 O 7 I (prepared at 410 °C, k  = 0.206 h −1 ). T-390 also exhibited excellent mineralization efficiency by removing about 60% of total organic carbon in 6 h of irradiation. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiOI@Bi 5 O 7 I composite was mainly attributed by the unique band gap structure of the p-n heterojunction, which enhanced the visible-light absorbance and accelerated the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The generated intermediate products were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the results indicated that PFOA was decomposed by stepwise losing CF 2 units. The BiOI@Bi 5 O 7 I heterojunction also possessed very good durability and reusability, displaying a great potential in PFOA containing water treatment.

Efficient removal of PFOA contamination: Harnessing the power of F-CTF adsorbent and UV/Na2SO3 tandem system

Yanan Liu,Guangyan Wang,Shuaishuai Lu,Siqi Wang,Peijuan Jiang,Huan Chen,Fang Jiang

Pollution caused by per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has raised global health concerns and there is an urgent need for researchers to find effective treatment methods. The covalent triazine framework (CTF) adsorbent materials with different structures based on various precursors using the ionothermal method were prepared and characterized in this study. Among them, F-doped CTF (F-CTF) is favorable for effective mass transfer in the adsorption process due to its rich microporous structure and large specific surface area. The maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) for PFOA reached 769.2 mg/g under the synergistic effect of electrostatic force and the interaction of F F. After six cycles of adsorption-desorption experiments, the adsorption and desorption rates of the F-CTF 400°C were stable at >90 %. This result indicates that F-CTF 400°C possesses high stability and recyclability. Furthermore, the desorption solution containing a high concentration of PFOA was treated directly by a UV/Na 2 SO 3 system, utilizing the e aq − within the system to decompose PFOA. The reduction and defluorination efficiencies for the desorption solution with high concentrations of PFOA reached 90 % and 40 %, respectively. The study results indicate that by leveraging the high adsorption selectivity and stable recoverability of F-CTF 400°C , the UV/Na 2 SO 3 system can completely remove PFOA. This approach offers a novel solution for the elimination of PFOA pollution in the environment.

The introduction of nano zero-valent iron in constructed wetlands simultaneously enhanced the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and nutrients

Jun Xiao,Juan Huang,Yucheng Chen,Ying Wang,Xiuwen Qian,Dengping Liu,Yuan Cao

Constructed wetland (CW) serve as the final ecological barrier for hazardous materials entering the natural water environment. Due to the ecological toxicity and difficult bioutilization characteristics of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) itself, CW technology faces great challenges in the field of PFOA remediation. In this study, nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was introduced into CWs to explore the mechanism of the synergistic removal of PFOA and nutrients in nZVI-CW system. The results indicated that the addition of 10 mg/L nZVI improved the removal efficiency of CW for 1 and 10 mg/L PFOA, with an average removal rate increased by 3.53–8.70%. The transformation products in CW effluents were qualitatively detected using HPLC-Q-TOF-MS, suggesting that the degradation of PFOA may involve decarboxylation, hydrolysis, redox, elimination, substitution and intramolecular rearrangement processes. The presence of nZVI enhanced the average removal rates of NH 4 + -N, NO 3 − -N and TP by 2.78–18.4% in CWs. The increase in key substrate enzyme activity confirmed the stimulating effect of nZVI on microbial activity. The addition of nZVI facilitated the growth and enrichment of hydroautotrophic denitrifying bacteria, nitrat-dependent iron-oxidizing bacteria, and dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria. Two types of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria ( Geobacter and Acinetobacter ) may be potential PFOA-degrading bacteria. Additionally, signaling pathways related to carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and xenobiotic degradation and metabolism exhibited higher abundance in the nZVI treated groups.

Insights into the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the ultra-highly efficient degradation of PFOA over S-scheme heterojunction of Bi7O5F11/BiOF

Jingzhen Wang,Chun-Shuai Cao,Yinqing Zhang,Lingyan Zhu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is refractory owing to the strong C-F bonds and is extremely difficult to be degraded by traditional photocatalysts. In this study, an S-scheme heterojunction was successfully synthesized by incorporating BiOF with wide-bandgap Bi 7 O 5 F 11 . Theoretical calculations, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy verified that a build-in electric field was created in the heterojunction, facilitating the separation of electron-hole pairs. Thus, the photoexcited electrons in the conduction-band (CB) of BiOF rapidly recombined with holes in the valence-band (VB) of Bi 7 O 5 F 11 , leading to enrichment of the highly reductive electrons in CB of Bi 7 O 5 F 11 and strongly oxidative holes in VB of BiOF. Additionally, the strong interaction between Bi 7 O 5 F 11 /BiOF and PFOA is conducive to electron transfer from catalyst surface to PFOA. Thus, BOF-2 displayed superbly-high photoactivity to decompose PFOA. PFOA (5 mg/L) was decomposed within 1 h, and 53% of total-organic-carbon was removed in 2 h of irradiation.

Recovery of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) from water using foam fractionation with whey soy protein

Nan Hu,Xiaodan Sun,Nan Yao,Mei Yang,Yaoxi Chen,Zhijun Zhang

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are persistent anthropogenic chemicals that are widely distributed in the environment and pose significant risks to human health. Foam fractionation has emerged as a promising method to recover PFOS/PFOA from water. However, PFOS/PFOA concentrations in wastewater are often inadequate to generate stable foams due to their high critical micelle concentrations and the addition of a cosurfactant is necessary. In this study, we developed whey soy protein (WSP) as a green frother and collector derived from soybean meal (SBM), which is an abundant and cost-effective agro-industrial residue. WSP exhibited excellent foaming properties across a wide pH range and demonstrated strong collection capabilities that enhanced the recovery of PFOS/PFOA. The mechanism underlying this collection ability was elucidated through various methods, revealing the involvement of electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, we designed a double plate internal to improve the enrichment of PFOS/PFOA by approximately 2.3 times while reducing water recovery. Under suitable conditions (WSP concentration: 300 mg/L, pH: 6.0, air flowrate: 300 mL/min), we achieved high recovery percentages of 94–98% and enrichment ratios of 7.5–12.8 for PFOS/PFOA concentrations ranging from 5 to 20 mg/L. This foam fractionation process holds great promise for the treatment of PFOS/PFOA and other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic removal of PFOA from water by F-functionalized MOF with in-situ-growth TiO2: Regulation of electron density and bandgap

Zheng Kong,Lun Lu,Chao Zhu,Junjie Xu,Qile Fang,Renlan Liu,Yi Shen

PFOA has caused enormous environmental risks with recalcitrance, toxicity, and bioaccumulation, while the degradation of PFOA is still a challenging topic related to the high energy of C F bonds. However, the conventional methods such as biological oxidation, electrochemical oxidation and membrane separation have their own drawbacks. Actually, adsorption-photocatalysis is considered a potential treatment due to effectiveness and thoroughness. Instead of preparing the composite material by adding TiO 2 , the method to in-situ grow TiO 2 in the MOF (MIL-125(Ti)) was carried out, which achieved narrowed band gap and improved the photoresponse ability, simultaneously. Furthermore, the surface F-functionalized MOF provided more available special adsorption sites for PFOA enrichment. Linked fluorine groups not only improved the adsorption capacity (185.151 μmol/g) but also enhanced the photocatalytic rate (1.221 E −4 /s) by altering the electronic density of VB and CB. The constructed F-TiO 2 @MIL-125 stepwise degraded PFOA through a dominant ·OH attack pathway and maintained the oxidize ability of h + to PFOA. As a bifunctional material for adsorption and photocatalysis , F-TiO 2 @MIL-125 was able to be applied in various water environments repeatedly, which has unlimited environmental application potential.
