With the continuous improvement of living standards, public concern regarding air quality has escalated. Airborne particulate matter (PM), primarily consisting of oily and non-oily particles, presents a significant threat to human health. However, conventional air filtration materials often fail to efficiently capture both categories of particles. In this study, we developed a dual-scale nanofibrous membrane based on cellulose acetate (CA) for the effective filtration of both oily and non-oily PM. Employing a Jet-splitting electrospun strategy, we fabricated a membrane comprising both fine and coarse fibers, endowing it with an ultrafine fiber diameter, a high specific surface area, and a distinctive fibrous architecture. The resulting fibrous air filter exhibited excellent filtration performance for both oily and non-oily PM across varying airflow rates achieving over 99% efficiency at 32 L·min −1 , while maintaining a low pressure drop (123.00 Pa for non-oily PM and 168.89 Pa for oily PM, respectively at this flow rate). The CA dual-scale nanofibrous membrane is straightforward to prepare and holds strong potential for applications in the filtration of cigarette smoke and the purification of air.

Frequent outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) make personal protective filter media in high demand. Electrospun nanofibrous materials are proved to be very effective in resisting virus-containing fine particles owing to their small fiber diameters; however, hindered by the intrinsic close-packing character of fine fibers, electrospun filters suffer from a relatively high air resistance, thereby poor breathing comfort. Here, we report a biomimetic and one-step strategy to create ultrafine and curly wool-like nanofibers, named nano-wool, which exhibit fluffy assembly architecture and powerful electret effect. By achieving the online self-crimp and in-situ charging of nanofibers, the curly electret nano-wool shows a small diameter of ~0.6 μm (two orders of magnitude lower than natural wool: ~20 μm) and an ultrahigh porosity of 98.7% simultaneously, together with an ultrahigh surface potential of 13260 V (one order of magnitude higher than previous filters). The structural advantages and powerful electret effect enable nano-wool to show excellent filtration efficacy (>99.995% for PM 0.3 ) and low air resistance (55 Pa). Additionally, nano-wool can be easily scaled up, not only holding great industrial prospect in personal protective respirators, but also paving the way for developing next-generation wool in a cost-efficient and multifunctional form.

Air particulate pollution from increasing industrialization poses an enormous threat to public health. It is therefore of particular importance to develop air filters with excellent filtration properties and antimicrobial properties. Here we design a novel air filter for outdoor personal protection. The air filter’s composite nanofibrous materials are prepared by electrospinning method using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the base polymer, silica dioxide (SiO 2 ) as the electret r and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the antimicrobial agent. Fourier-infrared spectroscopy, surface potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization reveal the successful incorporation of SiO 2 and CTAB into PAN . The air filtration test shows that the composite nanofibrous membrane has outstanding PM 0.3 filtration efficiency (98.5%) and lower pressure drop (76 Pa) at 32 L/min flow rate. Moreover, the durability tests show that the composite nanofibrous membranes have a long lifetime in terms of filtration performance. The filtration efficiency is reduced by only 2% after 48 h. In addition, the antimicrobial properties were tested by implementing both E. coli and S. aureus with up to a 99% bacteriostasis rate. Thus, this work improves the application potential of high-performance air filters for the removal of particulate pollution and may provide useful insights into the design of next-generation air filters suitable for applications in high antibacterial applications.

Currently, air pollution primarily arises from industrial emissions, coal combustion, and automobile exhaust, posing significant challenges for mitigation. This highlights the urgent need for advanced and efficient filtration materials with low pressure drop and high-temperature resistance. Traditionally, improving filtration property has involved increasing the thickness of the filtration materials, which consequently leads to higher costs. Here, dual-scale mullite nanofiber (MNF) films containing interwoven thick nanofibers (606 nm) and thin nanofibers (186 nm) are prepared using solution blow spinning. The dual-scale structure design enables the films to maintain a low pressure drop while achieving high filtration efficiency. At an airflow velocity of 5.3 cm s–1, the films with an areal density of 3.8 mg cm–2, achieve a filtration efficiency of 98.23% and a pressure drop of 141 Pa for PM0.3. In addition, the MNF films exhibit excellent flexibility and high-temperature resistance, making them have great potential for use in high-temperature flue gas filtration.
