AgBr/Polyoxometalate/Graphene Oxide Ternary Composites for Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Xiaoru Gao,Jinfeng Wang,Qihui Xue,Yuan-Yuan Ma,Yuanzhe Gao

The exploration of high efficient and stable visible light-driven photocatalysts for water splitting into green energy hydrogen has been considered as one of the currently most challenging topics for solving the energy crisis and environmental remediation. In this paper, a series of ternary AgBr/polyoxometalate/graphene oxide (AgBr/POM/GO) composites (POMs = {PMo12}, {PW12}, {SiW12}, {P2W18}, and {P2Mo18}) were synthesized via an ionic liquid-assisted hydrothermal method. The successful combination of ternary AgBr/POM/GO composites has been determined by a series of techniques. In addition, such ternary nanocomposites displayed wide visible light absorption ranges. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrate that such AgBr/POM/GO ternary composites display remarkable photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production, and the photocatalytic performance can be regulated by the species of POMs. Under minimally optimized conditions, the average hydrogen evolution rates were 256.0 μmol g–1 h–1 for AgBr/PMo12/GO, 223.2 μmol g–1 h–1 for AgBr/PW12/GO, 212.0 μmol g–1 h–1 for AgBr/SiW12/GO, 207.2 μmol g–1 h–1 for AgBr/P2W18/GO, and 177.2 μmol g–1 h–1 for AgBr/P2Mo18/GO, respectively. Both AgBr and POMs can be excited under the irradiation, greatly improving the visible light adsorption of the nanocomposites. Moreover, the adoption of POMs enhances the photochemical performance of the ternary nanocomposites because of their excellent redox properties and good photogenerated-electron/holes generation capacities. This work presents an efficient POM-based photocatalyst system for photocatalytic hydrogen production, which may provide important guidance for the design and exploration of efficient photocatalytic materials.

H2O2 Self-Supplying CaO2/POM@MOF Bimodal Nanogeneration Materials for Photothermal and Chemodynamic Synergistic Antimicrobials

Na Chen,Yuan Li,Yang Pan,Haozhe Wang,Hao Gu,Yuan Sun,Tiedong Sun

The emergence of bacterial resistance has a negative impact on the conventional antimicrobial treatments, and research into the development of the new antimicrobial materials is of great significance. Multimodal synergistic antimicrobial materials exert better antimicrobial effects compared with a single modality. In recent years, Polyoxometalate (POM) has shown great potential in the biomedical field due to its high catalytic activity and high photothermal conversion ability. However, owing to its small surface area, its applications have been greatly limited. Herein, we designed a H 2 O 2 self-supplied CDT and PTT bimodal nanogeneration material (i.e., CaO 2 /POM@MOF) possessing a larger surface area for the treatment of the bacterial infections, in which CaO 2 could release O 2 and H 2 O 2 in the weakly acidic microenvironment of bacterial infection and the dual catalytic site of POM@MOF could enhance the CDT reaction to generate ROS, resulting in the bacterial oxidative stress and the leakage of the bacterial contents, and the exposure to the NIR light generates localized high temperature that cause the rupture of bacterial cell membranes and the denaturation of their proteins. Meanwhile, the superior stability of POM@MOF can release fewer metal ions to improve its biocompatibility. The in vitro antimicrobial experiments demonstrated that CaO 2 /POM@MOF possessed the combined CDT and PTT effect and exhibited excellent antimicrobial efficacy. This work presents a promising strategy to combat the bacterial infections.

A static/dynamic dual-strategy for synergistically enhanced POM@Polypyrrole nanozymes in oxidase-like sensing

Ning Sheng,Qinghui Zhao,Jianqiang Wang,Xu Yao,Boyuan Li,Xianyang Zeng,Jingwen Sun,Jingquan Sha

The development of high-performance oxidase-like nanozymes is crucial for advancing biocatalysis and biosensing. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are promising candidates but suffer from high solubility and inefficient interfacial electron transfer. Conventional immobilization often overlooks the matrix's role in catalysis. Herein, a dual-strategy enhanced nanozyme was developed by in-situ oxidative polymerization of a mono-V-substituted phosphomolybdic acid H 5 [PMo 11 VO 40 ] (PMo 11 V 1 ) into a conductive polypyrrole (PPy) matrix. The optimal composite PMo 11 V 1 @PPy-2 exhibits 2.2-fold higher oxidase-like activity than its conventional immobilized counterpart. Ultrasonic irradiation (100 kHz) further enhances its activity by ∼ 80% through improved mass transfer. Leveraging this synergy, a highly sensitive colorimetric biosensor for glutathione (GSH) detection was constructed, achieving a low detection limit (0.73 μM), a wide linear range (1-80 μM), excellent recovery in serum (99.4% to 100.6%), and high selectivity. This work demonstrates that rational integration of static material design with dynamic process engineering can overcome fundamental limitations in heterogeneous nanozyme catalysis, providing a generalizable strategy for developing high-performance enzymatic mimics for biomedical applications.

Cationic Ru complexes anchored on POM via non-covalent interaction towards efficient transfer hydrogenation catalysis

Qingpo Peng,Xiuge Zhao,Manyu Chen,Jiajia Wang,Kai Cui,Xinjia Wei,Zhenshan Hou

The ionic materials consisting of cationic Ru complexes and Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate anion (POM, K 6 P 2 W 18 O 62 ) have been constructed via a non-covalent interaction. The as-synthesized catalysts have been characterized thoroughly by NMR, XRD, FESEM, and FT-IR, etc. The characterization suggested that a hydrogen bond interaction occurred between the proton of the amine ligand in the cationic Ru complexes and the oxygen atom of the POM anion. The hydrogen bond played an important role in enhancing catalytic activity for the transfer hydrogenation of methyl levulinate (ML) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) under very mild conditions. Especially, the transfer hydrogenation reaction proceeded via a heterogeneous catalysis approach and the heterogenized catalysts even afforded much better catalytic performance than homogeneous analogs. Notably, the catalysts can be recycled without an obvious loss of activity, and further extended to highly selective transfer hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes, etc. into the corresponding α,β-unsaturated alcohols without any base external additives. The high catalytic performance of these anchored catalysts was highly related to the hydrogen bond interaction and the basicity of the polyanion. The obtained knowledge from this work could lead us to a new catalysis concept of tethering active homogeneous complexes for constructing highly active anchored Ru complex catalysts for hydrogenation reaction.

POM-Based MOF-Derived Co3O4/CoMoO4 Nanohybrids as Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xing-Lin Yang,Yu-Sheng Ye,Zhi-Meng Wang,Zao-Hong Zhang,Yi-Lie Zhao,Fan Yang,Zong-Yuan Zhu,Tao Wei

Polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived Co3O4/CoMoO4 nanohybrids were successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal method combined with a calcination process, in which a Co-based MOF, that is, ZIF-67 acts as a template while a Keggin-type POM (H3PMo12O40) serves as a compositional modulator. The materials were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, and electrochemical measurements. When the Co3O4/CoMoO4 nanohybrids were applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), they display large lithium storage capacity (around 900 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1) and high cycling stability, and they can also exhibit good rate performances. This work might shed some light on the POM-based MOF host–guest synthesis strategy for the preparation of polymetallic oxides for enhanced electrochemical energy storage and further applications.

Strategies for Perfect Confinement of POM@MOF and Its Applications in Producing Defect-Rich Electrocatalyst

Xingyu Luo,Fengjiao Li,Fei Peng,Lizhen Huang,Xiaoling Lang,Meiqin Shi

Polyoxometalate encapsulated by metal–organic framework (POM@MOF) hybrid is an ideal precursor for electrocatalysts because it provides a homogeneous catalyst system with a flexible synergistic effect. However, controlling its fine structures to activate the derived catalyst after pyrolysis remains a challenge. The uniformly distributed carbon-defect tungsten oxides on the 3D carbon matrix were synthesized by using phospho-tungstic acid confined in HKUST-1 (PA@HKUST-1) as the precursor. By choosing ethanol as the solvent, the framework of PA@HKUST-1 was retained integrally and each pore of HKUST-1 kept intact even with holding the PA molecule inside. The well-organized structure of PA@HKUST-1 facilitated to offer a highly distributed metal source, and further transform into defect-rich catalyst. The average size of the resulting WOxCy/C catalysts was 1.5 nm, which was similar to a single molecule of PA. The WOxCy/C catalysts exhibited superior activity in the methanol oxidation reaction after being platinized due to the enhanced resistance to CO poisoning, which is also confirmed by DFT. This finding suggests a new route to design and achieve the defect-rich catalyst with controllable size.

Spatiotemporally reprogramming the cardiac pathological microenvironment with injectable POM-engineered hydrogel for chronological myocardial infarction treatment

Ling Luo,Yalan Wang,Yuliang Wu,Yanlan Xie,Chenghui Liu,Chuan Zhang,Bin Li,Jing Zhou,Xiaoxue Xu,Yuan Yong

The Fe-POM@gel is developed to chronological myocardial infarction treatment through spatiotemporally reprograming the cardiac pathological microenvironment. • The Fe-POM@gel sequentially exerts phase-specific functions-including oxygen generation, antioxidation, angiogenesis promotion, and immunomodulation-across the inflammatory, proliferative, and maturation phases of MI pathology. • This multifaceted reprogramming reverses infarct microenviroment, ultimately attenuating adverse ventricular remodeling and facilitating functional myocardial recovery. Myocardial infarction (MI) causes serious threats to people's lives due to its characteristic pathological microenvironment (PME) progression: inflammation, proliferation, and maturation phases. Nevertheless, traditional clinical therapies lack spatially targeted and temporally responsive modulation of the infarct microenvironment, resulting in limited myocardial repair effects. Fortunately, nanoenzyme-based engineered hydrogels show great potential in the regulation of the PME by spatiotemporally precise modulation, precise targeting, and on-demand feedback. Particularly, polyoxometalate (POM) nanozymes exhibit exceptional advantages for MI therapy including unique molecular structures, admirable redox properties and PME-sensitive aggregation properties. Thereby, an injectable POM-engineered hydrogel (Fe-POM@gel) with loading POM nanozyme into type I collagen and chondroitin sulfate (CS) is developed to chronological MI treatment through spatiotemporally reprograming the cardiac PME. During the inflammatory phase, Fe-POM@gel leverages its mixed valences of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Mo 5+ /Mo 6+ to ameliorate oxidative stress and hypoxia through ROS-scavenging-driven cyclic H2O2/O 2 regeneration. In the proliferative phase, it promotes macrophage polarization and regulates inflammatory mediators, facilitating angiogenesis and tissue regeneration. In the maturation phase, Fe-POM@gel inhibits extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and fibrosis progression, effectively preventing ventricular dilation and cardiac functional deterioration. Therefore, the Fe-POM@gel system provide a promising paradigm by spatiotemporally reprogramming strategy for MI chronological treatment. We developed an injectable Fe-POM@gel by loading polyoxometalate (POM) nanozyme into type I collagen and chondroitin sulfate (CS) for achieving chronological therapy of Myocardial infarction (MI) by spatially targeted and temporally adaptive regulation of pathological microenvironment (PME). Oxidation State and Heterointerface Co-Engineered Carrier Dynamics in POM@MOF Systems for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Xiaoting Ren,Bing Yan,Lewang Yuan,Dalong Zhang,Zong-Jie Guan,Yu Fang

Optimizing carrier dynamics to elevate photocatalytic efficiency represents a central goal in the design of photocatalysts; however, achieving this remains a daunting challenge within the research community. In this study, we have devised and synthesized four types of intramolecular heterojunctions (POM@MOFs), constructed by integrating polyoxometalates (POMs) with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Specifically, we utilized an organic linker featuring a photosensitive phenothiazine core with incrementally oxidized sulfur sites, and employed Zn/Cd as the metal nodes to create four analogous POM@MOF composites, designated as SO x -M ( x =  1, 2; M = Zn, Cd). Through strategic heterointerface engineering, we have achieved a synergistic improvement in both the generation and separation efficiency of charge carriers within these materials. Our results demonstrate that the SO 2 -M series, which incorporates phenothiazine in a more oxidized state (-SO 2 -), surpasses the SO-M series (-SO-) in terms of charge carrier generation and separation efficiency. Furthermore, within the SO 2 -Cd , the covalent bonds connecting the MOF and POM components significantly facilitate the separation and migration of photogenerated electrons. This collaborative regulatory mechanism enables SO 2 -Cd to exhibit outstanding photocatalytic performance. This research introduces a pioneering approach for the cooperative modulation of oxidation states and heterointerface interactions, offering a promising pathway for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts.

A POM-based copper-coordination polymer crystal material for phenolic compound degradation by immobilizing horseradish peroxidase

Ying Lu,Tong Zhang,Yue-Xian Zhang,Xiao-Jing Sang,Fang Su,Zai-Ming Zhu,Lan-Cui Zhang

A new polyoxometalate (POM)-based organic–inorganic hybrid Cu-coordination polymer, namely {((Cu(bipy))2(μ-PhPO3)2Cu(bipy))2H(PCuW11O39)·3H2O}n (denoted as compound 1, bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine, PhPO3 = phenylphosphonate), was self-assembled hydrothermally. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis shows that two unique types of 1D chains are present in compound 1, i.e. Cu(II)-organophosphine and organonitrogen complex cation ([((Cu(bipy))2(μ-PhPO3)2Cu(bipy))2]4+) chains and Cu-monosubstituted Keggin-type polyoxoanion ([PCuW11O39]5−) chains, forming a hetero-POM. Crystalline compound 1 as a new enzyme immobilization support exhibited a high horseradish peroxidase (HRP) loading capacity (268 mg g−1). The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), FTIR, zeta potential, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and circular dichroism (CD) results show that HRP is only immobilized on the surface of compound 1 through simple physical adsorption without a secondary structure change. This POM-immobilized enzyme (HRP/1) was first used for degradation of pollutants in wastewater, and it showed a high degradation efficiency and TOC removal efficiency for phenol, 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) within 30 min reaction time. Moreover, HRP/1 exhibited better operational and storage stabilities and reusability compared with free HRP. This work suggests that POMs can be used as new supports for enzyme immobilization and POM-immobilized enzymes may be used as a new kind of biocatalyst for degradation of phenolic pollutants.

Research on hydrogen production and degradation of corn straw by circular electrolysis with polyoxometalate (POM) catalyst

Mengzhu Li,Ting Wang,Mengyun Zhao,Yifan Wang

Converting corn straw into high-value chemicals and H 2 energy is of great significance to the effective utilization of biomass resources . Based on the proton exchange membrane electrolysis technology, a circular electrolysis system for H 2 evolution and corn straw degradation was built using polyoxometalate (POM) catalysts as redox media and charge carriers. Under mild conditions (80 °C), the influence of factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst concentration, and current density on the research system was explored. As a result, the efficient use of corn straw has been realized. The degradation rate of corn straw was as high as 63.48%, and the Faraday efficiency of H 2 production by electrolysis reaches 94.54%. The degradation products of corn straw were characterized and analyzed by SEM , FT-IR, XPS , GC-MS, and 2D HSQC NMR. This technique provides a potentially new pathway for H 2 production and corn straw processing.

Three birds, one stone: A multifunctional POM-based ionic hydrogel integrating strain sensing, fluorescent and antibacterial properties

Min Ma,Chun Wang,Deling Zhou,Shiwei Zhang,Yue Su,Taiyu Liu,Mingxue Li

Fluorescent hydrogels have garnered significant research interest in information storage fields due to their unique physicochemical properties and design versatility. However, the relatively limited functionality of most fluorescent hydrogels also restricts their practical application. Therefore, the development of multifunctional stimuli-responsive hydrogels has become increasingly urgent. In this context, a multifunctional POM-based ionic hydrogel with high conductivity, fluorescence and antibacterial properties was prepared by simple one-step radical polymerization using acrylamide, polyoxometalates (POMs) and imidazole ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-ethenylimidazol-1-iumbromide) as raw materials. The fabricated multifunctional POM-based ionic hydrogel exhibits prominent fluorescence emission, superior ionic conductivity (11.22 mS/cm), and remarkable antibacterial activity against Gram-positive/negative bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli ( E. coli , 91.96 %) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus , 99.89 %). Based on these advantages, the multifunctional stimuli-responsive POM-based ionic hydrogel not only exhibit excellent sensing properties for motion recognition, but also demonstrate reversible luminescent switching behavior under HCl/NH 3 stimulation. This reversible luminescent switching property makes the hydrogels promising candidates for secure information storage. Notably, the usage information remains invisible in daylight and can only be clearly observed under ultraviolet light, highlighting its potential applications in information protection. This work not only realizes the simple synthesis of multifunctional POM-based ionic hydrogel, but also provides a novel idea for developing ionic hydrogel as wearable sensors.

Preparation of recyclable and deformable POM microfiber for oil–water separation with nature-inspired top–bottom strategy

Wenbin Jin,Jingjing Wang,Hai Wan,Yuan Liang,Shuohan Huang,Yuwei Chen,Peng Wei,Qun Shao,Yanping Wang,Yong He,Yumin Xia

With the rapid development of marine transportation, frequent oil leakage will inevitably occur. Therefore, oil–water separation had become an important research topic. The polyoxymethylene (POM) microfiber is a potential oil–water separation material with very good chemical stability, hydrophobicity, and lipophilicity, as well as unique microfiber recyclability and deformability. In this paper, the POM microfiber (PMF) was prepared using a method inspired by natural bamboo cellulose. PMF can be directly used for oil adsorption with a maximum of 19.5 times of oil adsorption capacity (OAC). The water contact angle (WCA) in oil of POM microfiber membrane (PMFM) can reach 160° and the oil–water separation efficiency was more than 99%. In addition, the recyclability allowed the PMF to repeatedly separate the oil–water mixture, and the deformability ensured that it can be used in various oil–water separation situations with different shapes. Moreover, only deionized water was used in the top-bottom preparation strategy of PMF without any chemical reagents. Therefore, this eco-friendly strategy had important implications for the preparation of microfiber materials.
