Synthesis of tin-glycerate and it conversion into SnO2 spheres for highly sensitive low-ppm-level acetone detection

Li Jian,Chen Chen,Li Jialin,Li Shijun,Dong Chengjun

Tin-glycerate (Sn-Gly) spheres were synthesized through a simple solvothermal strategy, which was further thermally converted into SnO 2 . It is found that the loose SnO 2 spheres have been built up from nanoparticles with about 10 nm in size. The use of such SnO 2 nanostructures was further performed for low-ppm-level acetone detection. The results showed that the SnO 2 presented response of 123 to 100 ppm acetone vapor at 260 °C. The sensor also exhibited rapid response/recovery time (24.5 s/6.5 s), low detection limit (1.5 at 1 ppm), excellent selectivity, and good reproducibility. Especially, a good linearity ranging from 1 to 100 ppm acetone was fitted, making it a promising candidate for acetone detection.

Metal–organic framework-derived ZnO/ZnCo2O4 microspheres modified by catalytic PdO nanoparticles for sub-ppm-level formaldehyde detection

Nan Zhang,Yang Lu,Yizhuo Fan,Jingran Zhou,Xin Li,Samira Adimi,Caixia Liu,Shengping Ruan

Designing novel structures and selecting the right catalyst play significant roles to overcome the inherent limitations of chemical sensors. The transition metal-organic framework is one of the most promising precursors for the development of advanced gas sensors with high porosity. In this work, novel ZnO/ZnCo 2 O 4 hetero-structured microspheres synthesized from a Zn–Co-Prussian blue analog (PBA) precursor is rationally designed by changing the temperature of thermal treatment and the decoration of PdO nanoparticles is carried out by a water bath strategy. Formaldehyde-sensing properties of the sensors based on pure ZnCo 2 O 4 NPs, ZZCO-500, ZZCO-700, and PdO-ZZCO microspheres are studied in detail. The experiment results show that the PdO-ZnO/ZnCo 2 O 4 microsphere-based sensor has a higher response value (about 26.9), better selectivity (S formaldehyde /S ethanol  = 5) and rapid response and recovery (9/14 s) towards 100 ppm formaldehyde as well as a low detection limit (0.2 ppm). The improvement in formaldehyde-sensing properties could be attributed to the larger specific surface areas (SSA), abundant active sites, the heterojunctions and the catalytic effect of PdO nanoparticles. This work provides a feasible method for synthesizing MOF-derived hetero-structured nanomaterials, demonstrating the potential application for monitoring indoor air pollutants.

Characterization of a hybrid composite of SnO2 nanocrystal-decorated reduced graphene oxide for ppm-level ethanol gas sensing application

Dongzhi Zhang,Jingjing Liu,Hongyan Chang,Aiming Liu,Bokai Xia

This paper demonstrated a hybrid composite of tin oxide–reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for ppm-level detection of ethanol vapour. A facile and low-cost method of hydrothermal synthesis was used to construct the SnO2–rGO hybrid film on a PCB substrate with coil-like interdigital microelectrodes. The presence of small-sized SnO2 nanocrystals on rGO sheets was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements. The sensing properties of the SnO2–rGO hybrid film sensor, including the sensitivity, response–recovery times and repeatability, were investigated by exposing it to various concentrations of ethanol gas varying from 1 ppm to 100 ppm at room temperature. As a result, the presented sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 1 ppm at room temperature, as well as a fast response–recovery time and good repeatability, which outstripped that of pure rGO film sensors. Finally, the possible mechanism of ethanol gas-sensing for the above presented sensor was discussed in detail.

Effective Inhibition of Ethane Generation on Fe5C2 Nanoparticles Doped with ppm Level of Pd for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene

Mingshuai Sun,Fumin Wang,Guojun Lv,Xubin Zhang

Overhydrogenation to ethane is most undesired in selective hydrogenation of acetylene. Monometallic Pd supported on common oxide supports such as alumina and silica suffers from susceptibility of ethane formation, and the ethylene selectivity is usually unsatisfactory. Herein, Fe5C2 was carefully synthesized and employed as a new kind support doped with a (5–600) ppm level of Pd for selective hydrogenation of acetylene. The catalyst with appropriate Pd loadings exhibited more efficient ethane suppression and much higher ethylene selectivity than the traditional α-Al2O3 supported Pd catalyst, with full acetylene conversion under 240 °C, and maintained good stability after a 200 h tolerance test. Characterization and DFT calculation results reveal that the excellent ethylene selectivity is mainly derived from the special interaction between Pd atoms and the Fe5C2 support. Hydrogenation of ethylene to ethane needs to cross extremely high activation energy barriers on the catalyst surface, and ethylene desorption more easily occurs on it. Doping the appropriate amount of Pd atoms on the Fe5C2 surface can increase the obstacle for polymerization and will cause the unsaturated C2 species to be more inclined to be hydrogenated into C2H4. This synergy effect also acts as a guide in alkane suppression for selective hydrogenation of other alkynes.

Rational surface-state modulation of ZnO/ZnFe2O4 heterogeneous composites for sub-ppm-level high-performance acetone sensing toward noninvasive diabetes diagnosis

Xingyu Liu,Yonglin Chen,Yifei Wang,Jiayao Wang,Shiquan Chen,Yuxiang Ou,Zixuan Wu,Aiping Huang,Xianzhe Liu,Jianyi Luo

Spinel ferrite (MFe 2 O 4 ) has emerged as an ideal candidate material for non-invasive breath analysis acetone sensors in diabetes diagnostics due to its outstanding chemical stability and exceptional surface redox activity. However, existing MFe 2 O 4 -based gas sensors remain constrained by critical limitations, including high detection limits and low sensitivity to sub-ppm levels of acetone, which hinder their practical application in diabetes diagnosis. This study developed a simple and efficient strategy for successfully preparing ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 heterojunction composites by adjusting the pH of the solution. Specifically, leveraging the drastic solubility difference between Zn 2+ and Fe 3+ ions, we achieved controlled formation of ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 heterophases within a specific pH range (5.02–5.35). These structural features facilitate the adsorption of acetone molecules and boost the efficiency of charge transfer, thereby endowing the composites with superior acetone-sensing performance at the sub-ppm level. Notably, the as-synthesized ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 (pH = 5.02) heterogeneous composites exhibited exceptional gas-sensing performance toward 1.0 ppm acetone, including a low detection limit of 0.40 ppb, a high response (13.76), a fast response time of 6 s, excellent selectivity, long-term operational stability, and robust humidity tolerance. More importantly, the ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 sensor could successfully distinguish exhaled breath samples from healthy individuals and simulated diabetic patients, thus highlighting its potential for clinical breath analysis. The results demonstrate that the preparation of ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 heterojunction composites with tunable surface states and surface barriers through rational synthetic strategies provides a new paradigm for designing high-performance spinel ferrite-based composites, thereby advancing the development of non-invasive diabetes diagnostic tools.

Jing Huang,Xiaoxia Wang,Yongfeng Gong,Yi Liu,Ping Zhou,Xinkun Suo,Dawei Zeng,Hua Li

WO 3 coatings with tunable micro-nano hybrid structures were fabricated by liquid precursor flame spraying. The coatings consisting of the sole component of monoclinic WO 3 show porous topographical morphology with grains of ∼20   nm and pores of ∼4–8   μm. Assessment of gas sensing performances of the coatings to ozone reveals their optimum operating temperature of 150   °C, and sensor response of 3.9 and 46.7 to ozone concentration of 0.5   ppm and 2.0   ppm respectively. The results shed light on construction of ceramic coatings with tunable hybrid structures by the precursor flame spray technical route for functional applications.

Enhanced gas-sensing performance of metal@ZnO core–shell nanoparticles towards ppb–ppm level benzene: the role of metal–ZnO hetero-interfaces

Yan Gong,Xiaofeng Wu,Jiayuan Chen,Wenhui Li,Ning Han,Donghai Zhang,Yunfa Chen

Core–shell metal@ZnO nanoparticles including Au@ZnO, Pd@ZnO and Pt@ZnO were synthesized and utilized for sensing low-concentration benzene. Various techniques were used to characterize the compositional properties of the typical core@shell structure and analyze the relation between the sensing properties and the metal–ZnO hetero-interfaces. When applied as gas-sensing materials, all three core–shell metal@ZnO nanoparticles showed better sensing performance than pure ZnO nanoparticles towards low concentration benzene. In particular, the gas-sensing response of the Pt@ZnO core–shell nanoparticles was 7 times higher than that of pure ZnO towards 0.1 ppm benzene and 63 times higher towards 5 ppm benzene, which was more sensitive than most gas-sensing materials in previous literature. Furthermore, the Pt@ZnO core–shell nanoparticles presented an ultra-low detection limit of no less than 10 ppb, which was lower than those of most gas-sensing materials in previous literature. Besides, the Pt@ZnO core–shell nanoparticles showed high selectivity and long-term response stability with a response value of 2.7 ± 1.6% towards 1 ppm benzene after operating for a month. The enhanced gas-sensing performances of the metal@ZnO core–shell nanoparticles are well correlated to the work function differences between the contacted metal and ZnO within the metal–ZnO hetero-interfaces, which produce high Schottky energy barriers and modulate the electron transfer.

Systematic cation engineering in spinel ferrites (MFe2O4, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) for sub-ppm acetone sensing in non-invasive breath-based diabetes diagnosis

Yuxiang Ou,Xiangjian Liao,Shiquan Chen,Xingyu Liu,Rui Li,Yonglin Chen,Yifei Wang,Zixuan Wu,Aiping Huang,Xianzhe Liu,Jianyi Luo

The non-invasive detection of acetone in exhaled breath via gas sensors offers a simple and efficient strategy for the auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes. Spinel ferrites have emerged as promising candidates for sub-ppm acetone detection due to their outstanding physicochemical and electronic properties. Despite the development of diverse spinel ferrites, the intrinsic correlation between cation type (i.e., M 2 + in the MFe 2 O 4 structure) and these materials’ gas-sensing properties has not been systematically elucidated. In this study, spinel ferrites with different metal ions (MFe 2 O 4 , M = Fe, Co, Ni and Zn) were synthesized via a facile one-step solvothermal method. The effects of cation type on the crystal structure, microstructural features, and acetone-sensing performance of these ferrites were systematically studied. It demonstrates that the cation type exerts a significant influence on the grain size, morphological and microstructural characteristics, and gas-sensing kinetics of these ferrites, thereby regulating their overall acetone-sensing performance. Notably, the NiFe 2 O 4 sensor exhibits superior acetone-sensing properties toward 1.0 ppm acetone at its optimal operating temperature, including a high response value, a low detection limit, excellent humidity tolerance, outstanding selectivity, and long-term stability. Furthermore, the NiFe 2 O 4 sensor can effectively distinguish acetone concentration differences in exhaled breath between healthy individuals and diabetic patients (using simulated samples). These results clarify the intrinsic correlation between cation type and acetone-sensing performance of spinel ferrites, providing practical guidance for the rational design of high-performance acetone-sensing materials and promoting their application in breath-based auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes.

Co-modification of ZnO and Pt nanoparticles on porous nanorod-assembled SnO2 hierarchical structure for highly sensitive and selective detection of sub-ppm-level NO2

Yajun Zhao,Yanwei Li,Xuping Li,Qianxi Wang,Guang Sun,Jianliang Cao,Yan Wang

Herein, we propose a ZnO and Pt co-modification strategy to boost the NO 2 sensing performance of SnO 2 . Specifically, a ternary Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composite was prepared by sequentially decorating ZnO and Pt nanoparticles onto a porous nanorod-assembled hierarchical structure (PNRHS) of SnO 2 . The resulting Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composites were characterized using various techniques, and their sensing properties to NO 2 were investigated. The results reveal that after co-modification with ZnO and Pt, the SnO 2 sensor exhibits remarkable performance enhancements in detecting sub-ppm-level NO 2 , including significantly improved sensitivity, superior gas discrimination capability, and accelerated response kinetics. At its optimal working temperature of 140 °C, the optimized Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 sensor demonstrates a response of 105.6–1 ppm NO 2 , approximately 42.2, 7.4, and 7.9 times than that of the pure SnO 2 (2.5 at 120 °C), ZnO/SnO 2 (14.3 at 150 °C), and Pt/SnO 2 (13.3 at 140 °C) sensors, respectively. The enhanced NO 2 sensitivity of the ternary Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composite sensor is attributed to the synergistic sensitization effects of the ZnO and Pt modifiers, whose underlying mechanisms are discussed.

MnO2 Coated Mesoporous PdPt Nanoprobes for Scavenging Reactive Oxygen Species and Solving Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury

Yi Lu,Xinni Pan,Cheng Cao,Shanshan Fan,Haisong Tan,Shengsheng Cui,Yanlei Liu,Daxiang Cui

As one of the most widely used drugs, acetaminophen, is the leading cause of acute liver injury. In addition, acetaminophen-induced liver injury (AILI) has a strong relationship with the overproduced reactive oxygen species, which can be effectively eliminated by nanozymes. To address these challenges, mesoporous PdPt@MnO 2 nanoprobes (PPM NPs) mimicking peroxide, catalase, and superoxide dismutase-like properties are synthesized. They demonstrate nontoxicity, high colloidal stability, and exceptional reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging ability. By scavenging excessive ROS, decreasing inflammatory cytokines, and inhibiting the recruitment and activation of monocyte/macrophage cells and neutrophils, the pathology mechanism of PPM NPs in AILI is confirmed. Moreover, PPM NPs’ therapeutic effect and good biocompatibility may facilitate the clinical treatment of AILI.

Fe-ppm-Pd on charcoal: Palladium nanoparticles catalyzed Suzuki−Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl boronic acids (aryl neopentyl-1,3-diol boronic ester) with aryl halides

Fei Wang,Jiangge Teng,Zixu Li,Chao Fang,Kai Ma,Yanxiong Ke,Qiang Jia,Changhu Chu

A facile and readily available Fe-ppm-Pd/C catalyst has been developed for catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. When combined with dicyclohexyl(2′,6′-dimethoxy-[1,1′-biphenyl]-2-yl) phosphine (SPhos), this catalyst, with low levels of palladium (as low as 180 ppm), efficiently facilitates cross-coupling reactions between aryl boronic acids (or aryl neopentyl-1,3-diol boronic ester) and a wide range of aryl halides, including inactivated aryl chlorides. Additionally, the recovered Fe-ppm-Pd/C catalyst has demonstrated sustained catalytic activity over four runs, indicating minimal decline in performance. This suggests the catalyst's potential for long-term use and its practicality in industrial applications.
