Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO)/Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite materials exhibit substantial potential for wave-transparent applications due to the excellent dielectric properties of raw materials. In this work, we reported a facile paper-making method for preparing large-area micro-nano PBO/PTFE composite papers with uniform and compact structure by compounding PBO chopped fibers (PCFs), PBO nanofibers (PNFs), and PTFE. Notably, the simultaneous formation of an interconnected PBO fiber network and PTFE matrix promotes optimal structural uniformity, while the introduction of PNFs between PCFs and PTFE acts as an interface compatibilizer that effectively reduces interface defects in the papers. These structural advantages contribute to the composite papers’ exceptional dielectric properties (dielectric constant as low as 2.142 and dielectric loss as low as 0.001 at 10 GHz) and high wave-transmission efficiency (exceed 95.8 % across 2–22 GHz). Meanwhile, the composite papers feature favorable thermo-mechanical property and UV aging resistance, demonstrating their high potential in wave-transparent applications.

Composite insulators for high-voltage power grids are subject to multiple constraints concerning thermal conductivity, mechanical load-bearing capacity, and electrical insulation reliability. Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers are considered an ideal reinforcement phase owing to their excellent mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, and electrical insulation properties, but their smooth and inert surface results in poor interfacial adhesion with the epoxy resin matrix. Moreover, the lack of PBO fibers alignment control limits the full exploitation of their thermal conductivity for high-voltage insulation equipment. In this study, a synergistic strategy was developed to modify the PBO fiber surface with aminated graphene oxide (GO-PPDA) and to align the PBO fibers to enhance the interfacial, mechanical, and thermal properties of the resulting fiber-reinforced composite. In experiments, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was increased to a maximum of 57.62 MPa, representing a 54 % improvement over untreated fibers. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed, at the atomic scale, that the interfacial binding energy was significantly enhanced after GO-PPDA modification. The thermal conductivity of the composite with aligned fibers reached 1.531 W m −1 K −1 , which is dramatically higher than that of its randomly oriented counterpart.Optimized amination also improved breakdown strength to 32.5 kV mm −1 while effectively suppressing dielectric loss. Moreover, electrostatic field simulations confirmed that the introduced uniform GO-PPDA contributes to electric field homogenization. Furthermore, the flexural and tensile strengths of the composite were enhanced by 147.9 % and 224.4 %, respectively. This study provides a systematic design strategy for the development of high-performance insulating core rods for composite insulators.

Attempts to improve the application performance of noncontact silver (Ag) screen-printing paste for crystalline silicon solar cells, especially in terms of solderability, depend heavily on controlling the properties of the glass additive therein. Taking PbO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 – R x O y glasses as an example, this work demonstrates an improvement in the Ag paste due to the R x O y (e.g., ZnO, Bi 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , and MgO) component. The R x O y components were found to help improve the sintering compactness of the Ag paste. The inclusion of the different R x O y components resulted in obvious differences in the soldering state of the sintered Ag grid. Microscopic observations revealed that the soldering state was related to the covering of the solder on the Ag grid and the growth rate of the intermetallic compound Ag 3 Sn during soldering. Comparatively, the sintered Ag grid was soldered more firmly when the glass containing the Bi 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 component was used in the Ag paste. This is due to the higher coverage of solder on these Ag grids and the appropriate growth rate of Ag 3 Sn. Considering these findings, the functions of the R x O y components are discussed comprehensively.

Polyimide (PI) materials are highly valued in tribological applications due to their excellent friction-reduction and wear-resistance properties under extreme conditions. However, their relatively low tensile properties limit their effectiveness as standalone materials, necessitating reinforcement. Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers, known for their superior mechanical and tribological properties, struggle with effective interfacial bonding with PI due to low surface activity. This gap in effective reinforcement strategies is critical for advancing PI applications. Here, we address this challenge by anchoring graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets onto PBO fibers using rare-earth (lanthanum) ions, producing RE-GO-RE-PBO fibers with a multi-scale reinforcement structure. The study involved optimizing the rare-earth solution (RES) concentration and characterizing the fiber surfaces. Our results indicate that an optimal RES concentration of 0.3 wt% achieves uniform and stable GO deposition, significantly enhancing interfacial bonding with the PI matrix. The resulting RE-GO-RE-PBO/PI composite exhibited a 91.74% increase in tensile strength and a 58.44% increase in modulus compared to pure PI, alongside improved wear resistance and a low friction coefficient. These findings present a novel strategy for designing high-performance tribological composites by integrating rare-earth-modified nanomaterials into fiber-reinforced matrices. This approach not only addresses the critical challenge of enhancing interfacial bonding but also provides a theoretical and experimental foundation for advanced applications in aerospace and other high-tech sectors, pushing the boundaries of tribological material performance.

Traditionally, the catalyst layer was formed by spraying a slurry of catalyst, carbon black, and ionomer onto the proton exchange membrane of cells, leading to the catalyst distributed unevenly and the catalytic activity reduced. This study then avoids the slurry spraying process and uses PBO fibrillated fibers to create an integrated self-supporting and effectively dispersing catalyst layer. Detailed experimental results show that nitrogen doping increases the specific surface area by 32.3 % and tensile strain by 25.4 %, with negligible impact on the graphitization of activated carbon paper. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirm the in-situ formation of ORR-active platinum catalysts on the electrode surface. Additionally, it was demonstrated that Pt particles formed by thermal reduction at 700 °C have an average size of 2.2 nm. The self-supporting catalyst layer, loaded with Pt catalysts on nitrogen-doped activated carbon paper with a beating degree of 45 °SR, exhibited the smallest Tafel slope (87.1 mV·dec -1 ). Nitrogen doping enhances the electrochemical performance of activated carbon paper, providing superior Pt loading capacity and catalytic efficiency. This new strategy for the high-performance catalyst layer has potential application in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

To improve the interfacial adhesion and mechanical performance of PBO fiber composites, CNTs were uniformly grafted onto them at a high-density. The grafting of CNTs with massive reactive groups can improve the surface wettability and interfacial interaction of PBO fibers with epoxy resin. The IFSS and ILSS values of the modified composites (PBO-CNT-3) increased by 103.09 and 62.73%, respectively. As CNTs can strengthen interfacial regions of the composites, the mechanical properties (hardness and modulus) of the interphase were enhanced significantly. This led to the effective transfer of interfacial load, elimination of stress concentration, and improvement in the structural stability of the composites. As a result, the impact strength of the modified composites (PBO-CNT-3) was up to 103.76 kJ/m 2 (an increase of 56.24%) compared to the original composites. The surface morphology and deformation behavior of the fractured composites indicate that the interfacial failure mode of the composites grafted with CNTs changes from adhesive failure to both cohesive and substrate failure. This strategy of grafting CNTs at a high-density opens a new avenue for the interfacial regulation of structural composites, ultra-capacitor, sensor, and catalytic materials.

PAN-based carbon fibers (PAN-CFs) have been widely used as structural reinforcements of various advanced composites due to their excellent mechanical properties . However, PAN-CFs have no obvious superiority in terms of the heat dissipation ability compared to mesophase pitch-based CFs and vapor grown CFs. In the present work, Poly- p -phenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO) macromolecules, which could contribute to the development of highly ordered graphite from conjugated aromatic backbone, were introduced onto PAN-CF surfaces to prepare coaxial PAN/PBO carbon fibers (PAN/PBO-CFs). Results showed that functional graphene oxide (GO) could result in uniform grafting of PBO macromolecules onto fiber surfaces owing to π–π conjugations between GO and benzoxazole backbone. The coaxial PAN/PBO-CFs were subsequently obtained through high-temperature graphitization and the rigid state could be also retained. Results by XRD and TEM demonstrated that PAN/PBO-CFs had smaller interlayer spacing and higher crystallinity compared to PAN-CF, and PBO derived graphite crystals could also be perpendicular to fiber surfaces. As for the thermal conductivity of composites, the in-plane thermal conductivity of PAN/PBO-CF reinforced epoxy composite was as high as 82.86 W/(m·K) which was almost 1.5 times of PAN-CF/epoxy composites, and the through-thickness thermal conductivity with the value of 2.54 W/(m·K) also increased by 65%. The introduction of PBO macromolecules could contribute new conductive paths and alleviate the problem of interfacial temperature gradients between CF and resin matrix . As a result, thermal conductivity properties of coaxial PAN/PBO-CF reinforced composites significantly improved.

2,2′,7,7′-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl-amine)-9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD), the most widely used hole transport material in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs), still has serious defects, such as moisture absorption and poor long-term conductivity, which seriously restrict further improvement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the cell. Herein, to overcome these problems, inorganic salt PbSO4(PbO)4 quantum dots (QDs) are incorporated into spiro-OMeTAD as the hole transport layer (HTL) for the first time. The incorporated PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs significantly hinder the agglomeration of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide and improve the long-term conductivity through the oxidative interaction between PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs and spiro-OMeTAD and hydrophobicity of the HTL. Furthermore, the spiro-OMeTAD:PbSO4(PbO)4 composite film can effectively passivate perovskite defects at the perovskite/HTL interface, resulting in suppressed interfacial recombination. As a result, the PSC based on the spiro-OMeTAD:PbSO4(PbO)4 HTL shows an improved PCE of 22.66%, which is much higher than that (18.89%) of the control device. PbSO4(PbO)4 also significantly improves the moisture stability for 50 days at room temperature (at RH ∼ 40–50%) without encapsulation. This work indicates that inorganic PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs are crucial materials that can be employed as an additive in spiro-OMeTAD to enhance the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

The serious deactivation of denitration catalysts caused by heavy metals still a thorny issue in the practical application of selective catalytic reduction of NO x with NH 3 . Herein, we proposed a novel anti-poisoning strategy by designing SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 superacid supported CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst, and the effect of SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 supported CeO 2 /ZrO 2 for PbO-resistance NO x catalytic reduction was investigated. It was worthy to note that the introduction of solid superacid SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 significantly enhanced catalytic performance over the entire temperature range, with an exceptionally high NO x removal efficiency over 98 % during 250–500 °C. When 2 wt% PbO was deposited on the fresh catalyst, the catalytic activity of CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst decreased obviously, while CeO 2 /ZrO 2 -S catalyst can still maintain a higher NO x conversion over 90 % from 275 to 500 °C. The characterization results confirmed that the introduction of solid superacid SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 enhanced the surface acidity and promoted the transformation from Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ . The results of in situ DRIFTS implied that the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism was obeyed over CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst, and both Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanisms were followed over CeO 2 /ZrO 2 -S catalyst in the SCR process. With regard to poisoned catalysts, the NH 3 adsorption was inhibited to some extent, while the reaction mechanism wasn’t changed by PbO poisoning.

Lead acid batteries have been widely used and have dominated the global secondary battery market. It is very important to recycle the spent batteries efficiently to eliminate possible pollution and to ensure sustainable production. In this paper, we report our investigation on the solvothermal treatment of PbO 2 , which is one of the model compounds for the positive active mixture, in methanol and the subsequent calcination of its product. The results show that the solvothermal treatment of PbO 2 in pure methanol at 140 °C can produce a mixture of PbO and lead oxide carbonate, which can be calcined at a temperature below 500 °C to produce α-PbO. The as-prepared PbO powders are rod-like particles of about 0.5 micrometer in diameter and several micrometers in length, which can achieve a high discharge capacity of 165 mAh g −1 at the discharge current density of 5 mA g −1 , and more than 90 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 with excellent cycle stability. This study demonstrates a new way for the reuse of lead dioxide in spent lead acid batteries to produce highly active PbO.

Poor interfacial properties are always one of the bottleneck problems limiting the development of the PBO fiber/epoxy composites. To solve this, we demonstrated a mussel-inspired molecular regulation strategy of interphase structure using the layer-by-layer construction of rigid (PDA) and flexible (PEI) molecules without fiber structure damage. The precise control on the molecular scale can maximally increase the roughness and polar functional group on the fiber surface, thus enhance the chemical bonding and the mechanical interlocking of the interfacial adhesion. In comparison with the untreated fiber, the IFSS and ILSS value of fiber with (PDA/PEI)n have an increment of 86.85% and 80.08%, respectively. Besides, the overall mechanical performance, such as impact strength and dynamic thermal-mechanical behavior, was also improved significantly, owing to the improved physical-mechanical attributes of the interphase. In brief, our study presents a non-destructive interface regulation of PBO fiber composite to enhance its interfacial adhesion and mechanical performance and optimize its structure/function integrated design.

As portable and wearable electronic devices are rapidly developing, there is an urgent need for flexible and robust thermally conductive electromagnetic interference shielding materials to address the associated electromagnetic pollution and overheating issues. Herein, multifunctional poly(p-phenyl-2,6-phenylene bisoxazole) nanofiber/boron nitride nanosheet/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheet (PBO/BN/MXene) composite papers are prepared by a gel microparticle-mediated ordered assembly process with the aid of vacuum-assisted filtration. Nacre-like “brick and mortar” structure, segregated structure and sandwich structure are integrated into the composite paper, so that efficient thermally and electrically conductive networks have been established. When the BN and MXene contents are 29.2 wt% and 41.7 wt%, the 13 μm thick composite paper exhibits an EMI shielding performance of 31.8 dB and a thermal conductivity of 26.1 W/mK, markedly superior to those of the control samples without the ordered structures. Meanwhile, because of the unique architecture and inherent advantages of the building blocks, the composite paper exhibits extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (~ 1.43 ppm/K), excellent mechanical properties, and outstanding thermal stability and flame retardance, making it highly advantageous for practical applications in electronic devices. This work offers a promising approach for fabricating high-performance multifunctional composites by constructing efficient filler networks. Graphical Abstract
