Perovskite-type RCoO3 (R = Pr, Eu, Gd) nanofibers for supercapacitor electrodes and antiferromagnet

Luo Hanqiong,Hu Quanli,Yue Bin,Du Suxuan

Rare earth orthocobaltates nanofibers (PrCoO 3 , EuCoO 3 , and GdCoO 3 ) were prepared by a simple electrospinning method coupled with calcination. The PrCoO 3 , EuCoO 3 , and GdCoO 3 nanofibers have orthorhombic perovskite structure. The fabricated electrodes presented the typical pseudocapacitive characteristics, which originated from the reversible redox reactions of Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe(CN) 6 3− /Fe(CN) 6 4− . At 1 A g −1 , the specific capacitances of the PrCoO 3 , EuCoO 3 , and GdCoO 3 nanofibers were 119, 133, and 196 F g −1 , respectively. The electrochemical characteristics of the PrCoO 3 , EuCoO 3 , and GdCoO 3 nanofibers exhibited favorable specific capacitance, good long-term cycling stability, and high coulombic efficiency, proving the possible application into energy storage devices. PrCoO 3 and EuCoO 3 nanofibers exhibited a magnetic state transition from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic state. GdCoO 3 nanofibers showed a paramagnetic ordering at high temperature. The cooperation of the R 3+ ions and the Co 2+ ions contributed to the magnetism of rare earth orthocobaltates nanofibers. The antiferromagnetic behaviors of the fabricated samples confirm the potential application into spin-electronic devices.

The brown pigment with high near-infrared reflection based on Pr-doped Bi7.38Zr0.62O12.31

Liqing Li,Sisi Chen,Ruiying Zhai,Yijie Yang,Peilin Lei,Jiahao Lu,Xiaoqi Sun

In this article, the novel environment-friendly brown near-infrared reflective pigments, Bi 7.38-x Pr x Zr 0.62 O 12.31+δ (x = 0-0.2), were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-phase reaction at 800 °C for 2 h. X-ray diffractometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy, L* a* b* color space system and a UV aging test chamber were used to characterize the phase structure, micromorphology, optical characteristics, color properties, and UV aging resistance of the synthesized pigments. The results reveal that doping Bi 7.38 Zr 0.62 O 12.31 with Pr 6 O 11 caused a color transition from orange to brown. At a Pr doping level of 0.05, the brown pigment demonstrated a near-infrared reflectance of 96.54% and a near-infrared solar reflectance of 84.51%. Acid-base tolerance and UV aging tests showed that the color difference (ΔE*) between the pigments before and after treatment was less than 5, confirming its excellent stability. In the study of coating performance, air temperature inside the model coated with Bi 7.33 Pr 0.05 Zr 0.62 O 12.31 pigment was significantly lower than that of the model covered with commercial iron brown pigment after 90 min of infrared exposure. The temperature difference between the two models reaching 9.8 °C indicates that the prepared pigment had high near-infrared reflectance, which can effectively reflect solar thermal radiation and reduce heat absorption. It demonstrates potential for application in building energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Effect of Pr and In doping on hydrogen permeability properties of Y-BaZrO3

Yang Chunli,Wang Lei,Li Jun,Yao Wei,Liang Yanru,Wang Kai,Yun Sining

Y-doped BaZrO 3 has emerged as a promising ceramic material for hydrogen separation membranes. The conductivity of Y-BaZrO 3 (BZY) ceramics is highly dependent on the concentration of oxygen vacancies. In this work, BZY further individually doped with In and Pr were prepared by the citrate sol–gel combustion method. Effects of doping on the ceramic phase structure, oxygen vacancies, and micromorphology were investigated using a range of analytical techniques, including XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and SEM. The conductivity, hydrogen permeability, and stability of BaZr 0.7 Y 0.2 In 0.1 O 3−δ (BZYI) and BaZr 0.7 Y 0.2 Pr 0.1 O 3−δ (BZYP) ceramics were systematically evaluated. Upon doping, BZYI exhibits the most favorable conductivity, reaching 9.98 × 10 −3 S·cm −1 in dry air at 800 °C. At 900 °C, with water vapor introduced on the sweep side, the hydrogen permeation fluxes of BZYI and BZYP are 3.50 × 10 −9  mol·cm −2 ·s −1 and 2.60 × 10 −9  mol·cm −2 ·s −1 , respectively. Both samples were exposed to boiling water and a 100% CO 2 atmosphere at 900 °C for 3 h. Post-treatment XRD, Raman, and SEM analyses reveal no formation of heterophase, indicating excellent phase and microstructural stability.

Synthesis of Pr doped In2O3 nanoparticles and their enhanced ethanol gas-sensing performance

Dongmin An,Yingyue Wang,Jialun Dai,Lanpeng Guo,Nan Liu

Rare earth doping was an effective method to upgrade the gas-sensing performance of sensors based on oxide semiconductors . In this paper, Pr was successfully doped into In 2 O 3 nanomaterials with a facile co-precipitation approach through a hydrothermal strategy. The as-obtained series of Pr doped In 2 O 3 nanocomposites were analyzed by some technical characterization. The gas-sensing tests were performed by using series of Pr/In 2 O 3 nanocomposites as sensitive materials. The results illustrated that the doping of Pr not only reduced the particle size of Pr/In 2 O 3 nanocomposites but also produced more active oxygen on the surface of In 2 O 3 , thus, the responses of Pr/In 2 O 3 -based sensors towards ethanol gas (112.40–50 ppm) were enhanced. A possible mechanism for the improved gas-sensing property of Pr decorated In 2 O 3 sensors was proposed.

Electrochemical formation of Pr aided by additive (KF) in LiCl–KCl molten salt

Li Mei,Du Rui,Wei Hedi,Chen Jiayi,Liu Rugeng,Zhang Meng,Han Wei

In order to investigate the influences of the additive (KF) on electrochemistry and deposit morphology of Pr, various electrochemical techniques were used to comparative investigate the electroreduction potential and diffusion coefficient of Pr 3+ and kinetic properties of Pr 3+ /Pr in LiCl–KCl-PrCl 3 before and after the addition of KF at different molar concentration ratios of F − to Pr 3+ ( k ). Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and reverse chronopotentiometry results showed that the value of k ( k  = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) had no effect on reduction mechanism of Pr 3+ . With the increase of k , the reduction peak potential moved in the negative direction, the diffusion coefficient decreased, and diffusion activate energy increased. Meanwhile, the exchanged current densities ( j 0 ), charge transfer resistances ( R ct ), and activate energies ( E a ) were measured at different k by linear polarization technique, which illustrated that with the increase of k , j 0 gradually decreased, and E a and R ct increased. Furthermore, the electrochemical preparation of Pr aided by KF was explored by potentiostatic electrolysis at different k , and the products were characterized by XRD, SEM, and EDS, which indicated that with the increase of k , the morphology of metallic Pr changed from slender needles to granular. Strontium-Induced Lattice Oxygen Activation in Pr-Based Perovskites for High-Efficiency Water Oxidation

Sheng Ma,Xinze Li,Taoda Liu,Ke Yuan,Mengjun Tang,Waqas Muhammad,Xiaoling He,Tian Ouyang,Xiao Zhang,Wenyan Tao,Yinghua Niu,Zhen Zhang,Weiqiang Lv

The development of low-cost and high-performance noble-metal-free catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is central to advancing alkaline water electrolysis. This work introduces a novel “composition–thermal history” design strategy, synergistically combining controlled A-site Sr 2+ doping with optimized high-temperature sintering (950°C) in Pr-based perovskite. The resulting Pr 0.75 Sr 0.25 Ni 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 (PSNC-25) exhibits unprecedented nanostructuring and a maximized concentration of oxygen vacancies, unlocking efficient OER via lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism. Sr-induced lattice distortion drastically reduces oxygen vacancy formation energy from 2.06 to 1.14 eV, promoting facile lattice oxygen participation. Thermal engineering stabilizes high-valence Co 4+ /Ni 3+ states and enhances M─O covalency. Electrochemically, PSNC-25 achieves exceptional activity in 1 M KOH: a low overpotential of 389 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 83 mV dec −1 , significantly surpassing undoped PrNi 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 (η 10 > 570 mV). It also exhibits robust durability, by > 120 h chronopotentiometry at 10 mA cm −2 with only ∼45 mV potential drift. This work establishes a rational framework for activating LOM in cost-effective perovskites through dopant-induced electronic modulation and nano-structural control, advancing scalable green hydrogen production.

Electrochemical behavior of praseodymium and Pr-Al intermetallics in LiCl-KCl-AlCl3-PrCl3 melts

Hao TANG,Hui DENG,Qingbo REN,Dingzhou CAI,Yiming REN,Lang SHAO,Yongde YAN,Milin ZHANG

The electrochemical behavior of Pr(III) and formation process of Pr-Al intermetallics were investigated by different electrochemical methods. The reduction of Pr(III) ion to metallic Pr is an one-step three-electrons reaction. The reversibility of Pr(III)/Pr(0) system was evaluated by cyclic voltammograms with different scan rates. The co-reduction of Pr(III) and Al(III) ions formed three different Pr-Al intermetallics at electrode potentials around −1.40, −1.80, and −1.95 V vs. Ag/AgCl at 723 K, respectively. Open-circuit chronopotentiometry and electromotive force (emf) measurements were carried out to estimate the relative molar Gibbs energies of Pr for the formation of different Pr-Al intermetallics in the temperature range of 723–843 K. The activities of Pr in the Pr-Al intermetallic compounds were calculated.

Pressure-Engineered Trap-Controlled Multimodal Luminescence for Versatile Emission Responses in Pr-doped NaNbO3

Tingting Zhao,Hao Wang,Mei Li,Shang Peng,Bohao Zhao,Qi Feng,Yanlong Chen,Yingxue Han,Jun Yuan,Ningxiao Feng,Jiao An,Sheng Jiang,Chuanlong Lin

Multimodal luminescent (MML) materials have attracted significant attention in anti-counterfeiting applications due to their high sensitivity, concealability, and compatibility. However, limited understanding of their mechanisms hinders rational material design and further advancement. Herein, we report that NaNbO3: Pr3+ phosphors, synthesized via solid-state reaction, exhibit distinctive pressure-responsive MML behaviors, encompassing photoluminescence (PL), persistent luminescence (PersL), and mechanoluminescence (ML). Under UV irradiation at increasing pressure, the PL intensity exhibits a volcano-shaped trend, peaking at approximately 4.5 GPa. After the irradiation is terminated, both the PersL intensity and decay time remain nearly unchanged. Conversely, the ML intensity decreases exponentially with pressure and becomes almost completely quenched around 4.0 GPa. In situ high-pressure structural and spectroscopic analyses indicate that the distinctive MML phenomena likely arise from the different pressure sensitivities of the coordination environments associated with deep traps and shallow traps, which offers insights into the underlying mechanism of MML materials. Furthermore, the integration of multiple luminescence modes enables rich and tunable emission responses, paving the way for advanced stress-sensing platforms and high-security anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Low-temperature fabrication of Pr-doped In2O3 electrospun nanofibers for flexible field-effect transistors

Wei Shi,Zefei Peng,Song Chen,Xueling Yan,Hua Xu,Lan Liu

Although metal oxide nanofibers (MO-NFs) based field-effect transistors (FETs) prepared by electrospinning have gained great attention, it is still challenging to develop MO-NFs directly on flexible substrates such as polyimide (PI) to achieve a high flexibility due to the high annealing temperature. In this work, using a UV pretreatment and a subsequent “combustion synthesis” process, high-quality Pr-doped In2O3 (InPrO) electrospun NFs were successfully fabricated on a flexible PI substrate at a relatively low temperature (380 °C). It was found that the InPrO-based flexible FET (f-FET) prepared by UV pretreatment and low annealing temperature not only has a good interfacial adhesion but also show a good flexibility. When the f-FET was wrapped around the rigid cylindrical rod with a radius of 5 mm, it exhibited good performance including a high μFE of 2.12  cm2 V−1 s−1, a large Ion/Ioff of ∼108, and an excellent cycling stability (1000 bending cycles). This low-temperature processing route will certainly contribute to the future flexible electronics manufacturing.

Synthesis of Pr-doped ZnO nanospindles by one-pot precipitation as a triethylamine sensor

Jian Fang,Jing-Jing Xue,Rong-Pu Xiao,Xi Chen,You-Min Guo,Ji-Ming Song

The development of high performance triethylamine (TEA) sensors for the protection of human safety is essential. Herein, we reported a promising semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensor based on Pr-doped ZnO nanospindles as the sensing materials for the detection of TEA. The elemental composition and micromorphology of the as-prepared samples were systematically analyzed. The gas sensing performance of the pristine, 1 mmol%, 2 mmol%, and 3 mmol% Pr-ZnO sensor was evaluated. Among them, the 2 mmol% Pr-ZnO sensor exhibited the highest response value for TEA gas, and reached 158.0 towards 50 ppm TEA at 200 °C, which was about 10.0-fold higher than the response value of the pristine ZnO sensor. In addition, the 2 mmol% Pr-ZnO sensor also showed good reproducibility, rapid response/recovery time (10/46 s), theoretical limit of detection (168 ppb), outstanding long-term stability, and excellent selectivity for TEA gas.

Flexible (Ba,Ca)TiO3:Pr Nanofiber Membranes for Catalytic Piezoelectric Degradation of Organic Dyes

De-hua Wang,He-bin Li,Hong-wei He,Yang Deng,Ye Lu,Le Zhang,Ke-qing Ruan,Xiao-xiong Wang

Piezoelectric catalysis has become an emerging research field in recent years, which has received extensive attention. Nanoparticles and nanowires have been developed as piezoelectric catalytic materials. However, in practical research, the use of nanoparticles is not easy for the recovery of samples and will cause secondary pollution, and the current piezoelectric catalysis requires the help of high-frequency ultrasound, which increases the consumption of extra energy and cannot be applied on a large scale. In this study, a self-supporting macroscopic flexible inorganic (Ba,Ca)TiO3:Pr nanofiber membrane was successfully prepared by electrospinning. Natural energy (water flushing) was used to drive the flexible inorganic (Ba,Ca)TiO3:Pr nanofiber membrane for piezoelectric catalytic degradation of organic dyes. The results show that the flexible inorganic (Ba,Ca)TiO3:Pr nanofiber membrane driven by water washing has an obvious piezoelectric catalytic degradation effect on dyes. When the water flow rate was 450 L/h and the concentration of CR solution was 10 mg/L, the catalytic efficiency can reach 91.69%. This study provides a green and feasible method for the preparation of flexible inorganic piezoelectric catalytic materials and the catalytic degradation of organic dyes.

New insight into the coloration mechanism and synthesis of ultrafine Pr-ZrSiO4 yellow pigments

Shan Peng,Ranran Yang,Binglong Lei,Renhua Chen,Yun Gao,Xiaohong Xia,Kevin P. Homewood

It is of particular significance to unveil the authentic coloration mechanism of the multivalent praseodymium colored ZrSiO 4 yellow pigments for advanced decoration applications. We herein adopted a facile strategy to modulate the fluorine-assisted zircon crystallization and thereby obtained ultrafine Pr-ZrSiO 4 yellow pigments, which have a remarkably narrow size distribution and average diameters within 250–400 nm. By virtue of some cogent combinative spectra of reflection, absorption, excitation, and emission from three types of elaborately-designed H 2 -, air-, and O 2 -based pigments, the coloration mechanism for the Pr-colored zircon was systematically unveiled: both Pr 4+ and Pr 3+ coexist invariably in the pigments, while the former contributes primarily to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer from O 2p to Pr(IV) 4f for the blue–violet absorption to generate the yellow hue, and the latter is inclined to discolor the pigments. Therefore, an oxidizing atmosphere is preferable to produce brilliant Pr-ZrSiO 4 pigments with enhanced chromatic properties. The stark spectroscopic distinctions between the wide-band absorption from the nonluminescent tetravalency and the narrow-band absorption from the luminescent trivalency can expand our understanding to the rare-earth-based inorganic pigments.
