Because of the high stability and low cost, nanomaterials performed as alternative artificial enzymes to natural enzymes have attracted much interest and been widely applied in bioanalysis , catalysis and environment in the past decades. In this work, Pt/CeO 2 nanocomposites were designed as novel nanozymes and synthesized by a surfactant free method. The Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 2.6 ± 0.4 nm were uniformly decorated on the surface of CeO 2 nanorods . The peroxidase-like activity of Pt/CeO 2 nanocomposites was verified by several chromogenic substrates in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Compared to CeO 2 nanorods and Pt nanoparticles, the as-prepared Pt/CeO 2 nanocomposites exhibited enhanced enzymatic activity due to the strong metal-support interaction. The steady-state kinetic results demonstrated that the catalytic behavior of Pt/CeO 2 nanocomposites consisted with the typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The mechanism studies illustrated that the Pt/CeO 2 nanocomposites acted as electron transfer mediators during the catalytic process rather than promoting the generation of hydroxyl radical . Based on the intrinsic inhibition effect of ascorbic acid (AA) on oxidation , a simple, sensitive and selective colorimetric assay for detection of AA was established with a good linear relationship (0.5–30 μM) and a low limit of detection (80 nM). Further applications of the present system for AA detection in real samples have been also successfully demonstrated, suggesting that the Pt/CeO 2 nanocomposites with facile synthesis, high stability and high peroxidase-like activity exhibited promising applications in biomedical fields.

A clean nonorganic synthetic method has been developed to fabricate the uniform pomegranate-like Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres in a large scale. Under the effective protection of Ar atmosphere the redox reaction just simply happened between Ce(NO3)3 and K2PtCl4 in an alkaline aqueous solution, in which no other reducing agents or surfactants were added. The as-obtained nanospheres exhibited excellent structure stability even being calcined at 600 °C for 5 h. Moreover, the as-obtained Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres can be further supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form heterogeneous nanocatalyst, which has been successfully applied in the chemical reduction reaction of nitrophenol (NP) by ammonia borane (NH3BH3, dubbed as AB) instead of hazardous H2 or NaBH4.

Oxygen-enriched CO oxidation is a pivotal reaction in automotive exhaust and indoor air purification. Fine-tuning the active sites represents a significant challenge in this catalytic field. In this work, we modulated the chemical state of Pt on Pt/CeO 2 catalysts by varying pretreatment atmospheres (direct H 2 reduction and sequential O 2 calcination-H 2 reduction), then applied these catalysts to the CO oxidation reaction. It was found that the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst via direct H 2 reduction showed a much higher activity than the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst via sequential O 2 calcination-H 2 reduction. It was revealed that under O 2 -H 2 conditions, a strong metal-support interaction (MSI) introduced the highly dispersed small Pt clusters. Conversely, under H 2 reduction conditions, a moderate MSI causes the formation of larger Pt nanoparticles, exhibiting a significantly increased proportion of metallic states and promoting the activity of CO oxidation. This study provides an effective strategy for designing highly efficient catalysts.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are attractive in one-carbon (C1) chemistry because of their high atom efficiency. However, it is a great challenge for understanding the dynamic roles of SACs under operating conditions. Here, isolated Pt atoms trapped on defective CeO2 surface are investigated by experiments, especially operando techniques, which offers basic understanding of the nature and dynamic evolution of the Pt–CeO2 interface in dry reforming of methane (DRM). The Pt–Olattice configuration is highly active for CH4 dissociation at the expense of the Olattice atoms, which in turn promotes the H-assisted dissociation of CO2. The transformation of Pt atoms between positive and metallic states is driven by the DRM reaction, which is essential for rendering highly efficient catalysis. The dynamic evolution of Pt atoms favors to eliminate the reactive intermediates, such as carbonates and formates. The dynamic nature of the Pt–CeO2 interface in the DRM reaction shows a similar picture to the Yin and Yang transformation in ancient Chinese Tai Ji wisdom.

Tailoring efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with dual-heterojunction is crucial for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, a multicomponent bifunctional catalyst with dual-heterojunction is rapidly constructed via sequential electrodeposition for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that bidirectional electron transfer at the interface induces a double built-in electric field (BIEF) in Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 , which offers additional impetus for electron transport and brings the d -band center closer to the Fermi level, thereby optimizing reaction kinetics and the adsorption of reaction intermediates. Active Pt and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly anchored on the stable Ni(OH) 2 nanoflocs, ensuring high exposure of active sites and preventing NPs aggregation. Meanwhile, Ni(OH) 2 , serving as abundant electron donor center, forms dual heterointerface with Pt and CeO 2 (Pt-Ni(OH) 2 and CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 ), which ensures structural stability during electrochemical processes. Benefiting from the dual-heterojunction and the unique structure design, Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance, requiring only 66 mV (10 mA cm −2 ) and 278 mV (100 mA cm −2 ) for HER and OER, respectively. Remarkably, the two-electrode electrolyzer based on Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 electrode requires only 1.49 V to deliver 10 mA cm −2 with an excellent durability for OWS. This work brings light to the rational design and directional construction of bifunctional electrocatalyst hybrid nanomaterials with multiple heterojunctions.

Amino-ligand-assisted MOF derivation forms hierarchical Pt@CeO 2 microspheres. • -NH 2 groups anchor Pt species, preventing aggregation and maintaining pores. • The catalyst shows exceptional toluene oxidation, achieving a low T 90 of 177 °C. • In situ DRIFTS elucidates a sequential Mars-van Krevelen oxidation pathway. A novel amino-ligand-assisted MOF-derivation strategy was developed to fabricate hierarchically structured Pt@CeO 2 microspheres with highly dispersed Pt species (0.34 wt. %). The -NH 2 functional groups effectively anchored Pt precursors, preventing aggregation and preserving hierarchical porosity during calcination. The resulting catalyst exhibited exceptional toluene oxidation performance, achieving T 50 and T 90 values of 155 and 177 °C, respectively, significantly outperforming conventional impregnation-derived counterparts. Characterization revealed abundant surface oxygen vacancies, enhanced Ce 3+ concentration, and superior low-temperature reducibility due to strong metal-support interaction. In situ DRIFTS analysis confirmed a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism with sequential degradation pathway: toluene → benzyl alcohol → benzaldehyde → benzoate → anhydride → CO 2 and H 2 O. The superior catalytic performance arises from the synergistic effects of the hierarchically oriented mesoporous structure, inherently enlarged specific surface area, and the highly dispersed active Pt species confined within the CeO 2 matrix. This work establishes a versatile platform for designing high-performance catalysts with controlled metal dispersion and hierarchical porosity for VOC abatement and oxidation reactions. The chemical conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into high-value-added products offers a potential substitute for fossil-based products, which has garnered significant attention in light of energy depletion and environmental concerns. Among the various HMF derivatives, 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), applicable in polyester manufacturing, pharmaceutical intermediates, biodiesel, and other sectors, can be synthesized through the C═O hydrogenation of HMF. However, the inevitable humins formation and the over-hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis constrain the further application of this process. In this study, a series of hydroxyl-enriched Pt-based catalysts have been prepared and applied in the hydrogenation of HMF. For 1% Pt/CeO2, the selectivity for BHMF over 85% can be consistently maintained at 30 °C or at a substrate concentration of 100 g/L. Experiments and characterization studies indicate that hydroxyl groups presented on the catalyst surface could protect BHMF, inhibiting side reactions and thereby increasing carbon balance and main product selectivity. This superior selective catalytic performance was further demonstrated in the C═O hydrogenation over various aromatic aldehyde substrates, providing a novel approach for biomass compounds conversion to value-added chemicals and providing a perspective for catalyst design.

Metal–support interaction (MSI) plays an essential role in affecting the catalytic activity of supported catalysts by establishing a unique interface between metal and the support. However, moderate modulation of MSI remains a major challenge, as both too weak and extremely strong MSI can lead to catalysts exhibiting inferior catalytic activity. Herein, a series of Pt catalysts supported on ceria with various levels of sodium modification were prepared via a facile impregnation method. A comprehensive investigation based on experimental studies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations substantiates that the addition of sodium, as an effective motivator, triggers more significant electron transfer from Pt clusters to the CeO2 support accompanied by the formation of an interfacial sites (Ptδ+–OV–Ce3+), indirectly involved in reactions to decrease the activation energy of lattice oxygen in Pt–O–Ce, and Pt/1.1Na–CeO2 with moderate MSI is conducive to the oxygen species on the CeO2 adjacent to the Ptδ+ (e.g. Ptδ+–OV–Ce3+) configuration at the interface to take part in toluene oxidation. And the perimeter Pt0–OV–Ce3+ sites, as the active site, were formed by the Pt nanoparticles on the CeO2 for toluene adsorption. Pt/1.1Na–CeO2 (1.57 nm) with small particle size possesses a much larger number of perimeter Pt0–OV–Ce3+ sites than Pt/CeO2. Therefore, the catalytic activity and stability of Pt/1.1Na–CeO2 were remarkably enhanced in toluene oxidation compared to those of Pt/CeO2. This work emphasizes that alkali can be employed as a motivator to regulate MSI, providing a facile and powerful approach to design efficient catalysts for VOC oxidation.

Atomic-scale insights into the interactions between metals and supports play a crucial role in optimizing catalyst design, understanding catalytic mechanisms, and enhancing chemical conversion processes. The effects of oxide support on the dynamic behavior of supported metal species during pretreatments or reactions have been attracting a lot of attention; however, very less systematic integrations are carried out experimentally using real catalysts. In this study, we here utilized facet-controlled CeO2 as examples to explore their influence on the supported Pt species (1.0 wt %) during the reducing and oxidizing pretreatments that are typically applied in heterogeneous catalysts. By employing a combination of microscopy, spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, it is demonstrated that the exposed crystal facets of CeO2 govern the evolution behavior of supported Pt species under different environmental conditions. This leads to distinct local coordinations and charge states of the Pt species, which directly influence the catalytic reactivity and can be leveraged to control the catalytic performance for CO oxidation reactions.

Zeolite-based catalysts are extensively investigated for industrial applications due to their unique pore structure, remarkable thermal/hydrothermal stability, and abundant acid sites. However, the inherent lack of active sites for oxygen activation in non-reducible supports leads to suboptimal low-temperature oxidation activity. This study synthesized SSZ-39 (AEI-type) zeolite via interzeolite transformation from Y (FAU-type) zeolite, exploring the effects of gel composition on its structural properties and the influence of different cerium precursor salts on the CO oxidation performance of platinum-loaded zeolite catalysts. The results show that introducing seed crystals can replace 40 % of the organic structure-directing agent, leading to the synthesis of pure SSZ-39 zeolite with a specific surface area of 588 m 2 /g, where aluminum species are solely present as framework aluminum. The Pt-8Ce(ca)/SSZ-39 catalyst, prepared using cerium acetate as the precursor, demonstrates excellent low-temperature activity and stability, achieving 100 % CO conversion at 150 °C and maintaining it for over 100 h. After hydrothermal aging at 750 °C, the conversion temperature increased by only 20 °C, with the outstanding hydrothermal stability attributed to the stable framework structure of SSZ-39 zeolite. The highly dispersed Pt-CeO 2 interface increases surface-active oxygen species, which induce the transition from the L-H to the MvK reaction mechanism. This reduces competitive adsorption between O 2 and CO, and the oxygen vacancies formed during the reaction serve as additional O 2 activation sites, addressing the low-temperature CO oxidation issue in non-reducible support zeolite-based catalysts.

Identification of active sites governing the performance of indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at ambient temperature and low humidity is crucial for developing improved catalysts, but remains challenging. It has recently been discovered that the effective dissociation of water is of importance for HCHO oxidation at low humidity. Here, we have elaborately designed a Pt supported on three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous CeO 2 catalyst (Pt/kit-CeO 2 ). The Pt/kit-CeO 2 catalyst achieves ∼ 95 % CO 2 yield for a long time. The results indicate that the abundant oxygen vacancies and single coordination-unsaturated Ce sites on mesoporous CeO 2 enhance H 2 O dissociation, leading to the generation of a substantial amount of terminal hydroxyl groups (OH t ). These OH t groups promote the oxidation of intermediate dioxymethylene (DOM) and formate species, thereby regulating the catalytic activity. Additionally, the dispersed Pt facilitates the activation of O 2 , generating active oxygen species (O*) that work synergistically with OH t groups to promote the conversion of formates into CO 2 . The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) further elucidated the mechanism of catalyst promoting HCHO oxidation: HCHO (+O*) → DOM (+OH t ) → HCOO – /HCOOH (+OH t /O*) → CO 3 2– → CO 2 . We anticipate that this knowledge will inspire the development of Pt-based catalysts specifically tailored for low humidity.

The interaction between Pt and its various supports can regulate the intrinsic electronic structure of Pt particles and their catalytic performance. Herein, Pt/CeO 2 and Pt/SiC catalysts were successfully prepared via a facile Pt colloidal particle deposition method, and their catalytic performance in CO oxidation was investigated. XRD , TEM, XPS and H 2 -TPR were used to identify the states of Pt particles on the support surface, as well as their effect on the performance of the catalysts. Formation of the Pt–O–Ce interaction is one of the factors controlling catalyst activity. Under the oxidative treatment at low temperature, the Pt–O–Ce interaction plays an important role in improving the catalytic activity. After calcining at high temperature, enhanced Pt–O–Ce interaction results in the absence of metallic Pt 0 on the support surface, as evidenced by the appearance of Pt 2+ species. It is consistent with the XPS data of Pt/CeO 2 , and is the main reason behind the deactivation of the catalyst. By contrast, either no interaction is formed between Pt and SiC or Pt nanoparticles remain in the metallic Pt 0 state on the SiC surface even after aging at 800 °C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Thus, the Pt/SiC shows better thermal stability than Pt/CeO 2 . The interaction between Pt and the active support may be concluded to be essential for CO oxidation at low temperature, but strong interactions may induce serious deactivation of catalytic activity.
