Shape-controlled Pt-based bimetallic nanocrystals with ultrathin Pt-rich surfaces are appealing electrocatalysts for some key electrochemical reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) because of the synergistic tuning of topological atom configuration and strengthened electronic effects. However, it is rather challenging to fabricate such particular structures that can remain intact in harsh electrochemical environments, as such Pt-based nanocatalysts are unable to simultaneously achieve both unparalleled activity and robust stability. Here, a facile surface engineering strategy is proposed and employed to atomically tailor the near-surface structure of the Pt1.5Ni octahedra. The engineered Pt–Ni octahedra consist of an ultrathin Pt-rich shell (∼two atomic layers) and Pt-rich bulk composition. The optimized octahedral catalyst exhibits superior specific and mass activity (7.7 mA/cm2Pt and 1.9 A/mg Pt at 0.9 V) for ORR, ∼20 and ∼10 times higher than commercial Pt/C, respectively. The ligand and strain effects arising from the near-surface engineering are unraveled to be responsible for the remarkable ORR activity. Moreover, it shows robust stability with just 9.2% decay in mass activity after accelerated degradation tests (ADTs), as its compositional nature prevents surface Pt atoms and interior Ni atoms from diffusion and dissolution, compared with a decrease of 33% for commercial Pt/C. Our atomical engineered surface strategy illustrates a facile and effective design for a class of Pt-based nanocatalysts with excellent activity and stability.

The Pt-Ni nanoframe catalysts have attracted great interest owing to their unique electronic structure and excellent catalytic performance. However, the stability of the tenuous edges of nanoframe-structures is dissatisfactory and their universal applications in catalytic market beyond electrocatalytic reactions are yet to be tapped and explored. Herein, we developed a new core@shell structured Pt-Ni nanoframe@CeO 2 (Pt-Ni NF@CeO 2 ) composite via etching the Ni from inhomogeneous Pt-Ni rhombic dodecahedra (Pt-Ni RD) by cerium(III) acetate hydrate (Ce(OAc) 3 ). In this path, Pt-Ni RD was used as self-sacrificial template, while the Ce(OAc) 3 serves as the provider of the Ce 3+ source and OH − for the formation of CeO 2 shell, etchant of Pt-Ni RD, and the surface modification agent. By this way, the etching of Pt-Ni RD and the formation of the CeO 2 shell are simultaneously proceeded to form the final Pt-Ni NF@CeO 2 in one step. The obtained Pt-Ni NF@CeO 2 exhibits strong interfacial charge transfer interaction between Pt-Ni NF core and CeO 2 shell even without reduction treatment, leading to enhanced catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene. After introduction of trace silver, the Pt-Ni-Ag 4.9 NF@CeO 2 achieves remarkable catalytic performance for the selective conversion of phenylacetylene to styrene: high conversion (100%), styrene selectivity (86.5%), and good stability. It reveals that encapsulation noble metal nanoframes into metal oxide to form core@shell structured hybrids will indeed enhance their stability and catalytic properties. Particularly, this work expends the application of noble metal nanoframes materials to hydrogenation reactions.

Sodium borohydride (NaBH4), with a high theoretical hydrogen content (10.8 wt%) and safe characteristics, has been widely employed to produce hydrogen based on hydrolysis reactions. In this work, a porous titanium oxide cage (PTOC) has been synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using NH2-MIL-125 as the template and L-alanine as the coordination agent. Due to the evenly distributed PtNi alloy particles with more catalytically active sites, and the synergistic effect between the PTOC and PtNi alloy particles, the PtNi/PTOC catalyst presents a high hydrogen generation rate (10,164.3 mL∙min−1∙g−1) and low activation energy (28.7 kJ∙mol−1). Furthermore, the robust porous structure of PTOC effectively suppresses the agglomeration issue; thus, the PtNi/PTOC catalyst retains 87.8% of the initial catalytic activity after eight cycles. These results indicate that the PtNi/PTOC catalyst has broad applications for the hydrolysis of borohydride. Keywords:hydrogen generation;porous titanium oxide cage;PtNi nanoparticles;sodium borohydride hydrolysis

Designing portable electrochemical sensors combined with highly efficient glucose oxidation electrodes offers a significant opportunity for convenient glucose detection. In this report, we present the design and preparation of platinum deposited Ni/NiFe 2 O 4 /Carbon composite (Pt/Ni/NiFe 2 O 4 /C) derived from Ni/Fe metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) followed by Pt deposition. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy (EM) were utilized to analyze the crystal structure, morphology, and chemical composition of the resulting materials. The glucose sensing capabilities of the optimal Pt/Ni/NiFe 2 O 4 /C-3 were assessed using amperometry methods on a smartphone-based portable device. Acting as a nonenzymatic glucose sensor, the Pt/Ni/NiFe 2 O 4 /C-3 electrode demonstrated notable sensitivity and a low limit of detection for glucose. The portable sensor exhibits high sensitivities of 131.88 μM mM cm −2 at low glucose concentration (3–500 μM) and 29.52 μA mM cm −2 at high glucose concentration (700–4000 μM), achieving a low detection limit of 1.1 μM (S/N = 3). The sensor also demonstrates enhanced selectivity and stability for detecting glucose. Furthermore, the portable sensor exhibits a clear step-ampere response in the detection of serum samples with satisfactory recovery ranging from 99.30 to 101.32%. This suggests the significant potential of portable glucose sensing applications. Graphical abstract

The construction of ordered Pt-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs) has emerged as an effective approach to improve the activity and durability of catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. However, the synthesis, especially for Pt-Ni IMCs, is often hindered by their low disorder-order phase transformation temperatures ( T PT ). Here, we report a general synthetic strategy by introducing transition metals (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Fe) capable of forming high- T PT (≥1000 °C) PtM IMCs, which can effectively elevate the T PT of Pt 3 Ni and PtNi alloys and promote their ordering degree. In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) results confirm that Ti doping greatly increases the T PT of Pt 3 Ni from 490 to over 800 °C, enabling the formation of the ordered IMCs. The optimized Pt 3 Ni 0.7 Ti 0.3 catalyst achieves mass activity and specific activity of 1.35 A mg Pt −1 and 1.78 mA cm −2 , respectively, higher than those of Pt/C and Pt 3 Ni, while holding high stability. This work establishes a broadly applicable strategy for the synthesis of Pt-based IMCs, offering a pathway to durable, high-performance fuel-cell catalysts.

This work discusses a low-cost and high performance catalyst of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The catalyst was formed by Pt–Ni (15 wt% Pt) nanoparticles dispersed on carboxyl multi-wall carbon nanotubes (Pt-Ni/MWNT). The catalyst particle presents a nano- crystalline structure and has an average diameter of ca.7.1 nm based on the X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurement. The electrocatalytic stability and activity of the catalyst was evaluated by cyclic voltammogram and chronopotentiometry. The MFC with a Pt-Ni/MWNT cathode produced a maximum power density of 1.22 W/m 2 , which was close to that with a Pt/C (20 wt% Pt) cathode (1.40 W/m 2 ); the Coulombic efficiency reaches 31.6%, which was better than that of the Pt/C (29.3%). The total cost of a Pt-Ni/MWNT catalyst was much lower than that of a Pt/C catalyst. Thus, the Pt-Ni/MWNT probably provides a new solution for finding effective cathode materials for MFC.

Driven by the need of high catalytic performance and low cost Pt-based catalysts for methanol oxidation (MOR) and oxygen reduction (ORR) reactions, we developed a highly active nitrogen species-decorated Pt–Ni–N catalyst with tunable architectures and facets toward high catalytic activity. The synthetic procedure was conducted by Ni2+-assisted morphology and facet transformation from nanoflowers (NFs) (111) to nanoparticles (NPs) (220) and simultaneous optimization of both hierarchical structure and active surface sites. It is found that the adsorption of nitrogen species plays critical roles in determining both facet control of the Pt–Ni–N hierarchical structure and energetic activation of the catalytic reaction. Decoration of surface nitrogen species can effectually improve the relative content and electronic density of Pt0, leading to formation of a hierarchical structure and significantly improved catalytic activity toward both MOR and ORR compared with Pt–Ni and Pt–N, as well as the commercial Pt/C catalysts, indicating a new strategy to obtain highly efficient catalysts. Moreover, the results demonstrate that the catalytic enhancement is mainly due to the synergistic electronic effects among Pt, Ni, and N species.

Direct lignin fuel cells (DLFC) have recently attracted much attention. However, there are few reports on preparing anodic catalytic layer for DLFC. Thereby, we loaded a small amount of platinum carbon (Pt/C) catalyst on the surface of nickel (Ni) foam by a simple roller pressing method, thus realizing the preparation of Pt-Ni/C bimetallic catalysts. The results proved the successful loading of the Pt/C catalyst onto nickel foam, and the catalyst particle size has an average size of 2.76 nm. The Pt-Ni/C catalysts not only have good oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity (154 mV overpotential@10 mA/cm 2 and tafel-slope of 44 mV/dec) but also have good lignin oxidation reaction (LOR) activity with a low overpotential of 247 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 . Pt-Ni/C catalysts were applied to DLFC at room temperature, showing an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.84 V and a maximum power density of 0.62 mW/cm 2 . The optimum Pt/C loading was found to be 0.5 mg/cm 2 . The modified DLFC is comparable to glucose fuel cells' power generation performance and shows better application prospects.

Shape-selective alkylation of toluene with methanol is one of the most attractive promising synthetic routes to para -xylene. To date, modified ZSM-5 zeolites are considered to be one of the best candidate catalysts for this reaction. Although the para -selectivity could be tuned to approaching 100% by modification of the zeolite and optimization of reaction conditions, at present, there is still a lack of effective means to inhibit the rapid deactivation of the catalysts due to coke formation. In this work, a coke-resistant (Pt + Ni)/ZSM-5 zeolite with excellent stability for shape-selective alkylation of toluene with methanol to para -xylene is developed. The pore structure and acid properties of the zeolite are effectively tuned to ensure high para -selectivity. Meanwhile, the co-existence of Pt and Ni species in this catalyst plays the critical role in inhibiting coke formation, as the two species concurrently impede the formation of olefins, the main coking precursors, via two distinctive mechanisms.

It is important to monitor the intra-/extracellular concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in biological processes. However, miniaturized devices that enable portable and accurate H 2 O 2 measurement are still in their infancy because of the difficulty of developing facile sensing strategies and highly integrated sensing devices. In this work, portable H 2 O 2 sensors based on Pt-Ni hydrogels with excellent peroxidase-like and electrocatalytic activities are demonstrated. Thus, simple and sensitive H 2 O 2 sensing is achieved through both colorimetric and electrochemical strategies. The as-fabricated H 2 O 2 sensing chips exhibit favorable performance, with low detection limits (0.030 μM & 0.15 μM), wide linearity ranges (0.10 μM–10.0 mM & 0.50 μM–5.0 mM), outstanding long-term stability (up to 60 days), and excellent selectivity. With the aid of an M5stack development board, portable visual and electrochemical H 2 O 2 sensors are successfully constructed without complicated and expensive equipment or professional operators. When applied to the detection of H 2 O 2 released from HeLa cells, the results obtained by the developed sensors are in good agreement with those from an ultraviolet‒visible spectrophotometer (UV‒vis) (1.97 μM vs. 2.08 μM) and electrochemical station (1.77 μM vs. 1.84 μM).

Efficient hydrogen generation via electrochemical splitting of water at elevated current densities is paramount for its market implementation. Yet, cathodic hydrogen generation, in practical applications, encounters issues such as polarization, which result in energy consumption and sluggishness, thereby limiting its further utilization. In light of this, we have proposed a method for preparing a self-supported Pt-Ni(OH) 2 catalyst-(Pt-Ni(OH) 2 /NF). Specifically, by employing NaBH 4 pretreatment on nickel species to form NiB and Ni 2 B an intermediate, a significant improvement in catalytic performance has been achieved, especially at high current density. The replacement reaction of nickel boride with H 2 PtCl 6 generates rigid strain, leading to the Ni(OH) 2 lattice shrinkage. Upon testing, this catalyst requires only a minimal overpotential of 3 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , and it achieved an industrial current of 500 mA cm -2 with only 94 mV overpotential. Moreover, even after a 7-day longevity test at 200 mA cm -2 , it still maintained excellent performance.

The performance of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) is severely limited by the poisoning effect and low oxygen solubility of the phosphoric acid (PA) electrolyte. To address this, we report an innovative catalyst architecture consisting of one-dimensional hollow PtNi nanochains coated with a functional ionic liquid (IL), termed PtNi@IL/C. This design creates a multifunctional interface that demonstrates exceptional PA tolerance, achieving an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) half-wave potential of 0.840 V in a PA-containing electrolyte, which is 90 mV higher than commercial Pt/C. The IL coating synergistically enhances performance by suppressing PA adsorption on Pt active sites while simultaneously boosting O 2 mass transport through its high oxygen solubility, and providing a highly efficient proton conduction pathway. As a result, a membrane electrode assembly utilizing the PtNi@IL/C catalyst achieves a high peak power density of 521 mW cm −2 at 150 °C. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits outstanding durability, with a negligible 4 mV activity loss after 5000 electrochemical cycles and only a 2 % power density decay in single-cell tests, significantly outperforming the 14.3 % decay of Pt/C. This stability is attributed to the IL mechanically reinforcing the porous nanochain structure, preventing degradation. This work presents a powerful catalyst-interface engineering strategy for developing next-generation, high-performance fuel cells.
