Construction of functionalized Pt-O-S bridge on Pt/TiO2 simultaneously enhancing the catalytic activity and sulfur resistance for CO oxidation

Cangpeng Shan,Qinwei Jia,Yan Zhang,Guoshuai Liu,Xinyu Hou,Yunchong Wang,Rui Han,Caixia Liu,Weichao Wang,Qingling Liu

Removing industrial source CO through catalytic oxidation and providing heat for denitrification units have significant economic and environmental benefits. Sulfur poisoning of catalysts is the bottleneck to stabilize the system operation. To overcome this problem, we fabricated sulfate modified Pt/TiO 2 by appropriate NH 4 HSO 4 deposition, which survived in the SO 2 environment with the concentration as high as 1000 ppm SO 2 , and exhibited an outstanding stability with over 90% CO conversion at 200 °C for 500   h under a typical steel sintering flue gas condition. Experimental and theoretical explorations confirmed that the electronic structure of PtO x clusters was optimized through Pt-O-S bridges after sulfate modification. The O 2p band center closer to the Fermi level and the smaller energy difference between Pt 5d and O 2p band centers led to more active lattice oxygen of PtO x clusters. The more stable π back bonding between Pt 5d and CO 2p and weaker hybridization between Pt and the π⁎ (Ssp2-Osp2)2 orbital of SO 2 indicated enhanced CO adsorption while weakened SO 2 adsorption on Pt sites. The above factors simultaneously improved the low-temperature activity and sulfur resistance for CO oxidation over sulfate modified Pt/TiO 2 . This work provides new insights for the design of sulfur-resistant catalysts and the understanding on the effect of sulfates on catalytic activity.

Preparation of (5.0%)Er3+:Y3Al5O12/Pt-(TiO2-Ta2O5) nanocatalysts and application in sonocatalytic decomposition of ametryn in aqueous solution

Guanshu Li,Hongbo Zhang,Chunsheng Wei,Yingying Huang,Xuekai Dou,Yidi Wang,Jun Wang,Youtao Song

(5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder, as a high effective sonocatalyst, was prepared using sol-gel and calcination method. Then it was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In order to evaluate the sonocatalytic activity of the prepared (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder, the sonocatalytic decomposition of ametryn was studied. In addition, some influencing factors such as different Ti/Ta molar ratios on the sonocatalytic activity of the prepared (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder, catalyst added amount with ultrasonic irradiation time and used times on the sonocatalytic decomposition efficiency were examined by using ion chromatogram determination. The experimental results showed that the best sonocatalytic decomposition ratio of ametryn were 77.50% based on the N atom calculation and 95.00% based on the S atom calculation, respectively, when the conditions of 10.00   mg/L initial concentration, 1.00   g/L prepared (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) powder (Ti/Ta   =   1.00:0.25 heat-treated at 550   °C for 3.0   h) added amount, 150   min ultrasonic irradiation (40   kHz frequency and 300   W output power), 100   mL total volume and 25–28   °C temperature were adopted. Therefore, the (5.0%)Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Pt-(TiO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 ) composite nanoparticles could be considered as an effective sonocatalyst for decomposition of ametryn in aqueous solution.

Interfacial engineering boosting charge extraction for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Fangxu Dai,Zhiying Guo,Weijie Zhao,Zhenjiang Li,Jun Xing,Lei Wang

In heterostructure photocatalyst, metal–support interaction plays a key role in determining the photocatalytic reaction, which is rarely studied due to its complicated mechanism involving interfacial bonding, internal electric field, and charge transfer etc. Here we report an interfacial engineering to promote the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of the model photocatalyst Pt/TiO 2 . A stable oxidized Cu + layer was inserted as an interlayer between Pt nanoparticles and TiO 2 support, which boosts the efficiency of photoinduced charge extraction and regulates the surface charge state of the photocatalyst. The synthesized photocatalyst Pt/Cu/TiO 2 exhibits highly efficient hydrogen evolution of 1 L g −1 h −1 , which is 63% higher than the photocatalyst Pt/TiO 2 . This charge extraction strategy is also evidenced on photocatalysts Pt/(Rh, Co or Ni)/TiO 2 . Our findings not only provide insight into interfacial interaction in photocatalyst, but also offer effective guidelines for the design and fabrication of high-performance photocatalysts.

Strong-weak dual interface engineered electrocatalyst for large current density hydrogen evolution reaction

Ke Shaorou,Mi Ruiyu,Min Xin,Zhu Xinyu,Wu Congyi,Li Xin,Yang Bozhi,Wu Xiaowen,Liu Yangai,Huang Zhaohui,Fang Minghao

Supported nanocatalysts are crucial for hydrogen production, yet their activity and stability are challenging to manage due to complex metal-support interfaces. Herein, we design Pt@ anatase&rutile-TiO 2 with a strong-weak dual interface by modifying TiO 2 using high-energy ball milling and in-situ reduction to vary surface energies. Experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong Pt-anatase TiO 2 interface enhances hydrogen adsorption. In contrast, the weak Pt-rutile TiO 2 interface facilitates hydrogen desorption, simultaneously preventing Pt agglomeration and increasing reaction rate. As a result, the tailored catalyst has a 529.3 mV overpotential at 1000 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 0.69 times less than commercial Pt/C. It also possesses 8.8 times the mass activity of commercial Pt/C and maintains a low overpotential after 2000 cyclic voltammetry cycles, suggesting high activity and stability. This strong-weak dual interface engineering strategy shows potential for overall water splitting and proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, advancing the design of efficient supported nanocatalysts.

A selective methane gas sensor with printed catalytic films as active filters

Ning Lu,Shurui Fan,Yaxu Zhao,Boxuan Yang,Zhongqiu Hua,Yi Wu

In this work, a selective methane gas sensor was prepared based on In 2 O 3 to eliminate the serious cross-sensitive sensitivity to VOCs, NO 2 , and CO, which are typical interfering gases for methane detection in domestic. The catalytic films of Pt-TiO 2 , Pt-CeO 2 , and Pt-ZrO 2 were placed on the top of the sensing layer, i.e., In 2 O 3 loaded with Pd. Catalytic films were designed as filters to catalytically oxidize the interfering gases, such as VOCs, to prevent them reaching the surface of the sensitive layers. Thanks to this design, our sensors showed a high selectivity to methane, even in the presence of ethanol, CO, and NO 2 . In addition, we confirmed via the power-law response of oxygen that the basic sensing mechanism between Pd-In 2 O 3 and the sensor-printed catalytic films are kept the same. Both follow the general model with MOS sensors, which involves an electron transfer process resulting from the adsorption of oxygen on the surface and interaction with methane molecules. The present study showed that catalytic filter films (Pt-TiO 2 , Pt-CeO 2 , and Pt-ZrO 2 ) printed on Pd-In 2 O 3 sensors could enhance the selective response to methane for methane monitoring.

Unraveling Potassium Poisoning Mechanisms over Pt/TiO2 Catalysts for Complete Propane Oxidation

Chi Zhang,Qi Miao,Zongpeng Zou,Li Lv,Shengwei Tang,Wenxiang Tang

Impurity ions derived from the catalyst synthesis or operation would profoundly affect the performance of Pt-based metal oxides. In this study, we report a severe, support-dependent poisoning effect on Pt-based catalysts, with the severity varying significantly with the support material (TiO2, CeO2, and Al2O3) and the type of catalytic reaction (propane and CO oxidation). Specifically, the poisoned Pt/TiO2 catalyst showed negligible propane oxidation activity even at 650 °C, while simple water washing restored its activity, achieving 90% propane conversion at 324 °C. In contrast, the detrimental effect of K+ ions was much weaker in CO oxidation or when nonreducible Al2O3 was used as the support. Combined characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the oxophilic K+ ions passivate the active PtOx nanoclusters and suppress redox dynamics. More crucially, the spillover effect between metal and support was blocked, such as oxygen or hydrogen spillover. Strong CO2 and H2O adsorption also contributed to the serious activity loss on the K+-poisoned Pt/TiO2 catalyst. This work elucidates the support- and reaction-dependent poisoning role of K+ ions on Pt-based catalysts, offering critical insights for designing robust and efficient catalysts for deep propane combustion.

Dynamic evolution of Pt active sites in Pt/TiO2 during alkanes oxidation

Lu Liu,Ya-Min Gao,Liang Chen,Xin-Yu Zhou,Jing-Jing Huang,Wen-Zhi Jia,Cen Tang,Meng-Fei Luo,Jian Chen

Dynamic evolution of Pt sites in Pt/TiO 2 were studied during alkanes oxidation. • PtO x and metallic Pt sites are active for methane and propane oxidation, respectively. • Adsorbed formates intermediate remarkably affect the evolution of Pt sites. Structural evolution of active sites often significantly influences the performance of Pt catalysts, thus predicting evolution trends of active sites during reactions is crucial for governing catalytic activity. In this work, we investigated the dynamic evolution of Pt active sites in two model Pt/TiO 2 catalysts during methane and propane combustion. Pt/TiO 2 -I, prepared by wet impregnation, contains small Pt nanoparticles (∼1.5 nm) rich in oxidized Pt species (Pt 2 + and Pt 4+ ) with a fraction of 77.9%, while Pt/TiO 2 -NP, synthesized via sol-gel, has larger nanoparticles (∼6.6 nm) dominated by metallic Pt 0 (57.1%). Under steady-state conditions, Pt/TiO 2 -I shows superior activity for methane combustion (T 50 : 325 vs 415 °C), whereas both catalysts perform similarly for propane combustion (T 50 : ∼190 °C). Comprehensive characterizations demonstrate that both methane and propane combustion reactions drive significant evolution of Pt sites. Methane combustion promotes Pt particle growth, whereas propane combustion facilitates the reduction of slightly more PtO x to Pt 0 . The deconvolution of intrinsic active sites reveals that the oxidation state of Pt is more decisive than particle size during the evolution in propane and methane combustion. Specifically, the loss of exposed oxidized Pt 2+ sites primarily accounts for the deactivation of Pt/TiO 2 in methane combustion, while an increase in exposed metallic Pt 0 sites is critical for enhancing propane combustion. Moreover, the concentration of intermediate formates adsorbed on the catalyst surface should be decisive for the structural evolution of Pt active sites. These findings highlight the dynamic evolution of active sites and provide guidance for rational catalyst design. Download: Download high-res image (182KB) Download: Download full-size image

Abating ammonia emission from poultry manure by Pt/TiO2 modified corn straw

Yunhong Jiao,Jie Huang,Jing Hu,Anthony J. Weatherley,Wei Liu,Chaoyu Li,Zhiling Ma,Bing Han

Poultry manure is a significant source of ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions, which not only poses detrimental impacts on human well-being and the ecological system, but also leads to economic losses in the agricultural industry. Herein, we modified corn straw (CS) with 1 wt% Pt/TiO 2 catalysts using a low-temperature partial-oxidation technology to mitigate NH 3 emissions from poultry manure. It was found that Pt/TiO 2 can enable exothermic processes to occur at lower temperatures by reducing the activation energy. Under optimal modification conditions of 220 °C, the NH 3 uptakes of modified CS samples were markedly greater compared to those of the original CS. Addition of 20–50% modified CS to poultry manure resulted in significant reductions of 54.1–98.6% in NH 3 emissions compared to the control. Mechanistic studies indicate that NH 3 adsorption on the modified CS is mainly driven by the presence of acidic and alkaline functional groups, while surface area and pore structure have a negligible effect. XPS combined with NH 3 -TPD reveals that the formation of amide and amine bonds contributes to the excellent stability of adsorbed NH 3 . H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, and d -band theory suggest that strong metal-support interactions between Pt and TiO 2 could be particularly crucial in catalyzing CS modification. This study proposes an environmentally sustainable and economically viable solution for abating NH 3 emissions from poultry manure, thereby addressing crucial environmental and economic concerns in the agricultural sector.

Structure-Directing role of support on toluene catalytic combustion over Pt/TiO2 catalysts

Jin Yuan,Kun Yang,Jianqiang Shi,Jinxing Mi,Ke Zheng,Jianjun Chen,Junhua Li

Catalytic combustion is the state-of-the-art technology for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination and the supported platinum is generally regarded as one of the most desirable industrial catalysts. The crystal structure of support strongly influences the electronic properties of Pt species and thus catalytic combustion performance. Herein, we systematically investigated the influence of TiO 2 with different crystalline forms (anatase, rutile, and brookite) on toluene catalytic combustion in Pt/TiO 2 catalyst. The results found that the rutile TiO 2 -supported Pt catalyst exhibits the best activity, followed by anatase-supported and brookite-supported Pt. Detailed characterization further revealed the electron transfer driven by Pt-rutile TiO 2 electronic interaction, not only facilitated the formation of reactive Pt 0 nanoparticles but also stabilized the Pt 0 species during catalytic combustion. The Pt 0 species in rutile TiO 2 -supported Pt catalyst promoted the chemisorption of oxygen and accordingly resulted in outstanding catalytic activity for toluene combustion. This work offers new insights into the Pt-TiO 2 electronic interaction, providing a practical guide for developing highly efficient Pt-based catalyst for VOCs combustion.

Deciphering acetaminophen electrical catalytic degradation using single-form S doped graphene/Pt/TiO2

Qian Zhang,Wan Huang,Jun-ming Hong,Bor-Yann Chen

As the efficiency of electrocatalysis is depended on the characteristics of anode materials, heteroatom doping was applied to improve the physicochemical, electromagnetic, and structure properties of grapheme considering that the efficiency of electrocatalysis depends on the characteristics of anode materials. However, the mechanism underlying efficiency promotion remains unclear due to the complicated doping species of heteroatom. Single-form S loaded S/graphene/Pt/TiO 2 (S-GN/Pt/TiO 2 ) was prepared for the first time by using radical as precursor to clarify the function of S doping. The catalytic center for direct (pollution oxide on anode) and indirect electro-oxidation (pollution oxide by radicals) was then confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Results indicated that C atom besides SOx is the active site for direct oxidation of acetaminophen (APAP), and SOx is the active site for indirect oxidation for the generation of HO . Furthermore, the effect of some parameters (such as S content, pH, applied current, temperature) and oxidants generated through different electrolytes were also completely deciphered in this study. GC–MS analysis was implemented to identify intermediates of APAP after electro-oxidation (i.e., eight types of intermediates identified) and the possible pathway of degradation was proposed. The single form S doping approach and S function discussion could provide the in-depth understanding to the mechanism of electrocatalysis and suggesting performance of related materials with practical values for applications.

Ionic liquid microemulsion mediated synthesis of Pt/TiO2 nanocomposites for ammonia borane hydrolysis

Yuanchao Pei,Yajuan Niu,Wanjun Zhang,Yaxin Zhang,Jie Ma,Zhiyong Li

Tunable microstructure of microemulsion self-assembly systems has the prominent application as nanoreactors in reaction processes. Scientific and technological interest in microemulsions derived from the confinement effect of polar or nonpolar domains for hydrophilic/hydrophobic molecules. Benefiting from the tunable nature, ionic liquids-based self-assembly systems have been demonstrated as a versatile platform for catalytic reaction , drug delivery, functional materials fabrication and among others. In this work, ionic liquids microemulsions were designed by using ionic liquids as apolar phase and surfactant . The phase equilibrium and microstructure were studied through phase diagram , conductivity method and dynamic light scattering . Ionic liquids-in-water microemulsions were proposed as nanoreactor for fabrication of nanosized platinum/titanium dioxide composites. The size, morphology and catalytic performance can be tuned by the microemulsion structure through its confinement effect. The hydrolysis of ammonia borane catalyzed by these composites exhibits better catalytic activity with higher turnover frequency and lower activation energy of the reaction. It is believed that the nanoreactors constructed from versatile ionic liquids will provide new guidance in designing advanced scientific applications.

Enhanced photocatalytic alkane production from fatty acid decarboxylation via inhibition of radical oligomerization

Huang Zhipeng,Zhao Zhitong,Zhang Chaofeng,Lu Jianmin,Liu Huifang,Luo Nengchao,Zhang Jian,Wang Feng

The decarboxylation of bio-derived fatty acids provides a sustainable pathway for the production of alkane products under mild conditions; however, products are generally obtained in low selectivity due to the uncontrollable reactivity of radical intermediates. Here we demonstrate that photogenerated radicals can be rapidly terminated by surface hydrogen species during photocatalytic decarboxylation of fatty acids on a hydrogen-rich surface that is constructed by the interactions between H 2 and Pt/TiO 2 catalyst, thereby greatly inhibiting oligomerization; C n – 1 alkanes can therefore be obtained from bio-derived C 12 –C 18 fatty acids in high yields (≥90%) under mild conditions (30 °C, H 2 pressure ≤0.2 MPa) and 365 nm light-emitting dode irradiation. Industrial low-value fatty acid mixtures (namely, soybean and tall oil fatty acids) can be transformed into alkane products in high yields (up to 95%). Our research introduces an efficient biomass-upgrading approach that is enabled by subtle control of the radical intermediate conversion on a heterogeneous surface.
