Self-Assembly Synthesis of the MoS2/PtCo Alloy Counter Electrodes for High-Efficiency and Stable Low-Cost Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Zhi Zeng,Dongbo Wang,Jinzhong Wang,Shujie Jiao,Yuewu Huang,Sixiang Zhao,Bingke Zhang,Mengyu Ma,Shiyong Gao,Xingguo Feng,Liancheng Zhao

In this work, MoS2microspheres/PtCo-alloy nanoparticles (MoS2/PtCo-alloy NPs) were composited via a novel and facile process which MoS2is functionalized by poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) and self-assembled with PtCo-alloy NPs. This new composite shows excellent electrocatalytic activity and great potential for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as a counter electrode (CE) material. Benefiting from heterostructure and synergistic effects, the MoS2/PtCo-alloy NPs exhibit high electrocatalytic activity, low charge-transfer resistance and stability in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test. Meanwhile, a high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.46% is achieved in DSSCs with MoS2/PtCo-alloy NP CEs, which are comparable to traditional Pt CEs (8.45%). This novel composite provides a new high-performance, stable and cheap choice for CEs in DSSCs.Keywords:MoS2/PtCo-alloy nanoparticles;dye-sensitized solar cells;counter electrodes;efficiency;electrocatalytic activity

PtCo/N-doped carbon sheets derived from a simple pyrolysis of graphene oxide/ZIF-67/H2PtCl6 composites as an efficient catalyst for methanol electro-oxidation

Yuhong Lv,Xingwei Li

Many alloy catalysts have been developed for methanol electro-oxidation, but most synthetic methods are complicated. Herein, PtCo alloy catalysts supported on N-doped carbon sheets (PtCo/NCS) are successfully prepared by a simple pyrolysis of graphene oxide/ZIF-67/H 2 PtCl 6 composites at different temperatures (700, 800, 900 °C) under a gas flow of H 2 /Ar, in which ZIF-67 is served as Co and N sources. SEM, TEM , XRD , XPS and electrochemical characterization are employed to study as-prepared catalysts. In acidic methanol solution, the area-specific activity (1.25 mA cm −2  Pt) of PtCo alloy catalyst obtained at 800 °C (PtCo/NCS-800) is 2.6 times of commercial Pt/C (0.48 mA cm −2  Pt), and the area-specific activity of PtCo/NCS-800 is 3.5 times of Pt/C after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, an improved CO-tolerance of Pt is confirmed. The electronic effect and synergistic effect of metallic elements are responsible for outstanding performance of as-prepared catalysts. This work provides a simple approach to obtain high performance alloy catalysts.

Designing a hydrophobic PtCo/N-doped porous carbon catalyst for the long-term operation of Li–Air batteries in humid atmosphere

Nan Wang,Linhao Sun,Xuecheng Cao,Jialin Fu,Shuo Qi,Lingling Tang,Dangsheng Xiong

Li–air batteries with ultrahigh energy density are attracting attention, but at present, their practical applications are severely limited by water intrusion in the air. Herein, we loaded PtCo alloy nanoparticles on a N-doped porous carbon surface to create a novel hydrophobic functional catalyst. This catalyst effectively inhibited water contamination and suppressed the occurrence of side reactions. Li–air batteries with hydrophobic functional catalysts exhibited over double the cycle performance in both humid oxygen (∼50% relative humidity, over 255 h) and ambient air (CO 2 : 700 ppm, ∼55% relative humidity, over 135 h) at a current density of 500 mA g -1 . In addition, the discharge specific capacities of humid oxygen and ambient air were increased to 18719.3 mAh g -1 and 11,385 mAh g -1 .

ZIF-Mg(OH)2 Dual Template Assisted Self-Confinement of Small PtCo NPs as Promising Oxygen Reduction Reaction in PEM Fuel Cell

Zhenyu Chen,Chao Hao,Bowen Yan,Qiuyan Chen,Huiyan Feng,Xiaoqing Mao,Jianmei Cen,Zhi Qun Tian,Panagiotis Tsiakaras,Pei Kang Shen

Traditional calcination usually causes sintering of Pt, which diminishes Pt exposure in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) electrodes. In the present work, a facile self-confined method for synthesizing highly dispersed PtCo-alloy on Co, N co-doped mesoporous carbon (PCN-MC) is developed via a dual-template strategy. Owing to the co-confined effect of Zn in the bimetallic zeolite-based imidazolate framework (ZIF) and Mg(OH) 2 template, ultra-fine 2.7 nm PtCo-alloy with 2–3 atomic-layer Pt-skin nanoparticles are obtained. By adjusting the Co/Zn feeding-ratio in the bimetallic ZIF at 8/7, the alloying degree and nanoparticle size are optimized to achieve an outstanding oxygen reduction reaction activity with a high mass activity (MA) of 0.956 A mg Pt −1 in 0.1 m HClO 4 , about 7.5-fold of that of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, notable durability is also achieved with 81% retention of the initial MA after 30k cycles conducted between 0.6–1.0 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode). These features are also verified by a H 2 –Air fuel cell test with an excellent combination of mass activity, power density, and durability. This strategy provides a feasible route for the large-scale synthesis of highly-dispersed PtCo-alloy catalysts.

Nitrogen-Doped Intermetallic PtCo Catalyst with Multilayered Pt-Skin Surfaces for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Ji Zhou,Chen Liu,Yifei Liao,Guanghui Xia,Qin Huang,Yisha Huang,Yigang Yan,Chaoling Wu,Yao Wang

Catalysts with a platinum-rich shell and intermetallic core are considered to be one of the most promising catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. However, too thin of a platinum-rich shell makes the core–shell structure easy to lose. Therefore, the development of the core–shell structure with an appropriate thickness of platinum-rich shell and intermetallic core remains a huge challenge in the field of fuel cells. In this paper, PtCoN-1000/C catalyst with about 1 nm thick platinum-rich shell shows significantly enhanced ORR activity and stability in acidic electrolyte, which is superior to L10-PtCo/C and commercial Pt/C catalysts. The specific power at 0.8 V and mass activity at 0.9 V are 5.60 W mgPt–1 and 0.74 A mgPt–1, respectively. It suggests that the tensile strain and moderately thickened platinum-rich shell led by nitrogen doping can greatly improve the performance of the catalyst.

Carbon nanofibers as nanoreactors in the construction of PtCo alloy carbon core-shell structures for highly efficient and stable water splitting

XinRong Liu,Ming Zhang,TingTing Yang,LiNa Wang,Han Zhu,ShunLi Wang,MingLiang Du

Carbon nanofibers served as nanoreactors for the design and construction of PtCo alloy carbon core-shell nanostructures with nitrogen doping (PtCo/NCNF) through a combination of electrospinning and nitrogen doping treatments. The PtCo/NCNF hybrid consists of PtCo alloy nanoparticles surrounded by a few of N-doped carbon layers , demonstrating a typical core-shell structures. The PtCo/NCNF hybrid can both served as electrode materials for electrocatalytic water splitting including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). For the HER performance, the PtCo/NCNF exhibits very small onset potential of 20   mV, an overpotential of 50   mV at a j (vs RHE)   =   10   mA   cm −   2 and Tafel slope of 30   mV   dec −   1 . The PtCo/NCNF hybrid also exhibits high OER activity with an onset potential of 310   mV, an overpotential of 400   mV at a j of 10   mA   cm −   2 and a small Tafel slope of 76   mV   dec −   1 . The high catalytic activities of PtCo alloy for HER and OER originate from the 3D hierarchical structures, well-dispersed PtCo alloy, high conductivity of NCNF, protection from the carbon-encapsulated structure, and the introduction of nitrogen.

Anshun Zhao,Zhaowei Zhang,Penghui Zhang,Shuang Xiao,Lu Wang,Yue Dong,Hao Yuan,Peiwu Li,Yimin Sun,Xueliang Jiang,Fei Xiao

Recent advances in on-body wearable medical apparatus and implantable devices drive the development of light-weight and bendable electrochemical sensors, which require the design of high-performance flexible electrode system. In this work, we reported a new type of freestanding and flexible electrode based on graphene paper (GP) supported 3D monolithic nanoporous gold (NPG) scaffold (NPG/GP), which was further modified by a layer of highly dense, well dispersed and ultrafine binary PtCo alloy nanoparticles via a facile and effective ultrasonic electrodeposition method. Our results demonstrated that benefited from the synergistic effect of the electrocatalytically active PtCo alloy nanoparticles, the large-active-area and highly conductive 3D NPG scaffold, and the mechanically strong and stable GP electrode substrate, the resultant PtCo alloy nanoparticles modified NPG/GP (PtCo/NPG/GP) exhibited high mechanical strength and good electrochemical sensing performances toward nonenzymatic detection of glucose, including a wide linear range from 35 μM– to 30 mM, a low detection limit of 5 μM (S/N = 3) and a high sensitivity of 7.84 μA cm −2  mM −1 as well as good selectivity , long-term stability and reproducibility. The practical application of the proposed PtCo/NPG/GP has also been demonstrated in in vitro detection of blood glucose in real clinic samples.

Metal-support interaction promoted multifunctional electrocatalysis on PtCo/NC with ultralow Pt loading for oxygen reduction reaction and zinc-air battery

Manting Zhang,Tingting Zhou,Danil Bukhvalov,Fengyan Han,Caiqin Wang,Xiaofei Yang

Tri-functional PtCo/NC nanocatalysts were assembled via in-situ integration with ultralow Pt loading supported on ZIF-67 derived porous carbon material, and used as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Detailedly, PtCo-3/NC with ultralow Pt loading (1 wt%) exhibits the halfwave potential of 0.877 V for ORR in acidic media and considerable current density for both ORR and EOR at 0.85 V, and low overpotential (η 10 =10 mV) for HER. The as-assembled zinc-air batteries (ZABs) based on PtCo/NC have higher power density than Pt/C based ZABs. DFT calculation reveals the strong metal-support interactions (MSI) in PtCo/NC, which leads to the change of electronic state, redistribution of charge density and optimization of free energy , allowing it to present greater performances than Pt/C. This work highlights the possibility of using it as highly effective electrode catalysts with ultralow Pt loading in fuel cells and metal-air battery.

Toward the Long-Term Stability of Cobalt Benzoate Confined Highly Dispersed PtCo Alloy Supported on a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheet/Fe3C Nanoparticle Hybrid as a Multifunctional Catalyst for Zinc-Air Batteries

Ping Bai,Peng Wang,Jiarong Mu,Zhinan Xie,Chunfang Du,Yiguo Su

This work reports a new type of platinum-based heterostructural electrode catalyst that highly dispersed PtCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) confined in cobalt benzoate (Co-BA) nanowires are supported on a nitrogen-doped ultra-thin carbon nanosheet/Fe3C hybrid (PtCo@Co-BA-Fe3C/NC) to show high electrochemical activity and long-term stability. One-dimensional Co-BA nanowires could alleviate the shedding and agglomeration of PtCo alloy NPs during the reaction so as to achieve satisfactory long-term durability. Moreover, the synergistic effect at the interface optimizes the surface electronic structure and prominently accelerates the electrochemical kinetics. The oxygen reduction reaction half-wave potential is 0.923 V, and the oxygen evolution reaction under the condition of 10 mA•cm–2 is 1.48 V. Higher power density (263.12 mW•cm–2), narrowed voltage gap (0.49 V), and specific capacity (808.5 mAh•g–1) for PtCo@Co-BA-Fe3C/NC in Zn-air batteries are achieved with long-term cycling measurements over 776 h, which is obviously better than the Pt/C + RuO2 catalyst. The interfacial electronic interaction of PtCo@Co-BA-Fe3C/NC is investigated, which can accelerate electron transfer from Fe to Pt. Density functional theory calculations also indicate that the interfacial potential regulates the binding energies of the intermediates to achieve the best performance.

Facile synthesis of PtCo nanoparticles/three-dimensional graphene hybrid material as a highly active and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Shuqi Hu,Zi-An Li

To further promote the widespread commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), high performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with high activity and stability must be developed to accelerate its sluggish kinetic process. Here, we report a successful synthesis of a novel hybrid material - highly synergistic PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) attached to three-dimensional graphene (PtCo @3DG). The PtCo @3DG exhibits excellent ORR performance, and the mass activity and specific activity measured at 0.9 V vs. RHE were 0.801 A/mg Pt and 1.250 mA/cm 2 respectively, which are 6.8 and 6.2 times higher than commercial Pt/C. High stability of this new material is achieved, which has demonstrated a loss of only 1.87% after an extensive 10,000 cycles test. The superior performance of PtCo @3DG can be primarily attributed to several key features, including its ultrathin size, a high Pt utilization, and a beneficial alloy effect. Additionally, the 3D graphene possesses an open and interconnected porous structure that facilitates efficient charge and mass transfer, which accelerates the desorption process of intermediates and exposes more active sites.

Ultrasensitive sandwich-typed electrochemical immunoassay for detection of squamous cell carcinoma antigen based on highly branched PtCo nanocrystals and dendritic mesoporous SiO2@AuPt nanoparticles

Zhang Jing-Xian,Lv Chun-Lin,Tang Chang,Jiang Lu-Yao,Wang Ai-Jun,Feng Jiu-Ju

Squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) is one of the common squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) in women, which usually works as a tumor biomarker for cervical cancer in diagnostic applications. Herein, bimetallic PtCo highly branched nanocrystals (PtCo BNCs) acted as electrode substrates to construct sandwich-typed electrochemical immunosensor for ultrasensitive detection of SCCA, by using dendritic mesoporous SiO 2 @AuPt nanoparticles (DM-SiO 2 @AuPt NPs) to adsorb electroactive thionine (Thi) as a signal label. The PtCo BNCs enlarged the loading of the primary antibody (Ab 1 ), showing effective improvement in conductivity and sensitivity. The DM-SiO 2 had abundant pores to incorporate more Thi, on which the decorated AuPt NPs created a great number of active sites to immobilize the secondary antibodies (Ab 2 ), thereby obviously amplifying the detection signals. The prepared sensor exhibited a broader linear range (0.001–120 ng mL –1 ) and a lower detection limit (0.33 pg mL –1 , S / N  = 3), combined with high reproducibility, a low relative standard deviation (below 2.5%) and acceptable recovery (from 98.5 to 110.0%) even in diluted human serum samples. This research provides a substantial platform for clinical diagnosis of SCCA in practice. Graphical abstract

Hollow PtCo alloy nanospheres as a high-Z and oxygen generating nanozyme for radiotherapy enhancement in non-small cell lung cancer

Shuying Li,Wenjie Sun,Yuan Luo,Yanping Gao,Xueping Jiang,Cheng Yuan,Linzhi Han,Kuo Cao,Yan Gong,Conghua Xie

Radiotherapy, as well as chemotherapy and surgery, occupies an essential position in tumor treatment. Nonetheless, insufficient radiation deposition and hypoxia-related radioresistance of cancer cells still are serious challenges in radiotherapy. Herein, we proposed a hollow PtCo nanosphere (PtCo NS)-based novel radiosensitizer with three advantages to sensitize tumor radiotherapy: (i) the high-Z element Pt ensured higher radiation absorption to cause more DNA damage, (ii) the platinum (Pt) and cobalt (Co) elements exhibited a dual catalase-like enzymatic activity to convert endogenic H2O2 to O2 efficiently, and (iii) the unique hollow nature of the PtCo NS provided a large specific surface area, which could amplify the catalytic reaction of H2O2 to induce reactive oxygen species and cancer cell apoptosis upon combination with radiation. Both in vivo and in vitro studies showed that the hollow PtCo NS could significantly inhibit tumor growth, simultaneously relieving tumor hypoxia with good biocompatibility and biosafety. This work presents a simple but multifunctional radiosensitizer with a unique hollow structure for radiotherapy enhancement.
