A novel signal amplification strategy of an electrochemical aptasensor for kanamycin, based on thionine functionalized graphene and hierarchical nanoporous PtCu

Xiaoli Qin,Yan Yin,Huijing Yu,Wenjuan Guo,Meishan Pei

An ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor for the quantitative detection of kanamycin antibiotic was fabricated based on a novel signal amplification strategy. This aptasensor was developed using thionine functionalized graphene (GR-TH) and hierarchical nanoporous (HNP) PtCu alloy as biosensing substrates for the first time. HNP-PtCu alloy with controllable bimodal ligament/pore distributions was successfully prepared by two-step dealloying of a well-designed PtCuAl precursor alloy combined with an annealing operation. GR-TH composite was synthesized by one-step reduction of graphene oxide (GO) in TH solution. Greatly amplified sensitivity was achieved by using GR-TH/HNP-PtCu composite owing to its large specific surface and good electron-transfer ability. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed aptasensor exhibited a high sensitivity and a wider linearity to kanamycin in the range 5×10 −7 –5×10 −2   μg   mL −1 with a low detection limit of 0.42   pg   mL −1 . This aptasensor also displayed a satisfying electrochemical performance with good stability, selectivity and reproducibility. The as-prepared aptasensor was successfully used for the determination of kanamycin in animal derived food.

New strategy of S,N co-doping of conductive-copolymer-derived carbon nanotubes to effectively improve the dispersion of PtCu nanocrystals for boosting the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol

Jingping Zhong,Kexin Huang,Wentao Xu,Huaguo Tang,Muhammad Waqas,Youjun Fan,Ruixiang Wang,Wei Chen,Yixuan Wang

Efficacious regulation of the geometric and electronic structures of carbon nanomaterials via the introduction of defects and their synergy is essential to achieving good electrochemical performance. However, the guidelines for designing hybrid materials with advantageous structures and the fundamental understanding of their electrocatalytic mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, superfine Pt and PtCu nanoparticles supported by novel S,N-co-doped multi-walled CNT (MWCNTs) were prepared through the innovative pyrolysis of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polyaniline copolymer as a source of S and N. The uniform wrapping of the copolymer around the MWCNTs provides a high density of evenly distributed defects on the surface after the pyrolysis treatment, facilitating the uniform distribution of ultrafine Pt and PtCu nanoparticles. Remarkably, the Pt 1 Cu 2 /SN-MWCNTs show an obviously larger electroactive surface area and higher mass activity, stability, and CO poisoning resistance in methanol oxidation compared to Pt/SN-MWCNTs, Pt/S-MWCNTs, Pt/N-MWCNTs, and commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory studies confirm that the co-doping of S and N considerably deforms the CNTs and polarizes the adjacent C atoms. Consequently, both the adsorption of Pt 1 Cu 2 onto the SN-MWCNTs and the subsequent adsorption of methanol are enhanced; in addition, the catalytic activity of Pt 1 Cu 2 /SN-MWCNTs for methanol oxidation is thermodynamically and kinetically more favorable than that of its CNT and N-CNT counterparts. This work provides a novel method to fabricate high-performance fuel cell electrocatalysts with highly dispersed and stable Pt-based nanoparticles on a carbon substrate.

Hollow PtCu octahedral nanoalloys: Efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction by regulating near-surface composition

Guorong Chen,Xiaotong Yang,Zixuan Xie,Fengling Zhao,Zhiyou Zhou,Qiang Yuan

In response to the scarcity of precious metals, the development of precious-metal-saving electrocatalysts exhibiting high mass activity (MA) and durability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) for both proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has aroused increasing attention. In this study, octahedral Cu-rich PtCu alloy is seeded to fabricate near-surface composition-tunable PtCu hollow octahedral nanoparticles (HONs) with the wall thickness of ~2.1 nm. Due to both the alloying effects of near surface and the special hollow octahedral structure, the PtCu/C HONs exhibit significantly higher MA and durability than commercial Pt/C towards both ORR in alkaline medium and MOR in sulfuric acid electrolyte. The ORR MA of Pt 44.1 Cu 55.9 /C HONs are up to 2.60 A mg Pt −1 that is 18.5-fold enhancement compared with that of Pt/C. Besides, after 10,000 voltage cycles, the MA of Pt 44.1 Cu 55.9 /C HONs remains to be 1.61 A mg Pt −1 , a datum 53.7 times that of Pt/C. The in situ CO polarization curves exhibit that the Pt 44.1 Cu 55.9 HONs/C own high resistance to CO poisoning. For MOR in sulfuric acid electrolyte, the optimum SA/MA of PtCu/C HONs is 5.33 mA cm −2 /1.94 A mg Pt −1 , which is 10.25/5.87 times higher than that of Pt/C. This study provides effective bifunctional cathode and anode electrocatalysts for both PEMFCs and DMFCs.

Ultrathin PtCu metallene with sandwich structure for ethanol electrooxidation

Qing-Ling Hong,Qi Zhao,Li-Wen Wang,Yu Chen,Zhichuan J. Xu

Synergistic PtCu metallenes with atomic-layer thickness deliver remarkably superior activity in ethanol oxidation. • The PtCu metallene with three-atomic-layer thickness delivers an ultralow onset potential for EOR. • An outstanding EOR mass activity of 2214 mA mg Pt −1 at −0.7 V is achieved, which is 5.1-fold higher than commercial Pt black. • The PtCu metallene facilitates C−C bond breaking and favors the C1 route, promoting deeper oxidation of ethanol. Ethanol electro-oxidation (EOR) is essential for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) to efficiently utilize renewable biofuels. Here, we report a CO-assisted synthesis strategy that leverages CO adsorption on Pt(100) facet to guide the anisotropic growth of ultrathin PtCu alloy nanosheets. Cu alloying modulates the surface electronic structure, weakens CO binding on the (100) facet, and promotes two-dimensional growth along the (111) direction, yielding a PtCu metallene with a three-atomic-layer thickness and a Pt-rich core sandwich structure (s-PtCu ML). Owing to this unique atomic configuration, s-PtCu ML exhibits an ultralow EOR onset potential of 0.24 V. At 0.7 V, the EOR mass activity of s-PtCu ML reaches 2214 mA mg Pt −1 , which is 5.1 times higher than that of commercial Pt black (Pt cNP), underscoring superior Pt utilization. In addition, s-PtCu ML shows significantly enhanced CO tolerance, excellent long-term stability, and improved C1 pathway selectivity, enabling more complete EOR. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that enhanced ethanol molecules adsorption on the s-PtCu(111) surface promotes the enrichment of ethanol molecules at the initial reaction site. Concurrently, it enhances OH* affinity, thereby effectively facilitating the oxidative removal of CO via the *CO+ *OH→CO 2 pathway. This study provides insights for the design of alloy electrocatalysts for small-molecule electrooxidation reactions. General synthesis of binary PtM and ternary PtM1M2 alloy nanoparticles on graphene as advanced electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation

Jing Sun,Haifeng Ma,Hong Jiang,Liyun Dang,Qingyi Lu,Feng Gao

We developed a one-step method to obtain a high dispersion of Pt-based alloy nanoparticles on graphene by using both the carrier function and the reducibility of carbon without the addition of any other reducing agent. This method opens up a general and feasible route for the synthesis of different metals, and binary and ternary alloys (such as Pt, Pt–Cu, Pt–Ni, Pt–Ni–Cu, Pt–Co–Cu, Pt–Au–Cu, and so on) on graphene sheets, which would bring potential applications in many fields. Particularly in this study, the obtained PtCu/G composites exhibit superior electrochemical activities and high poison tolerance toward methanol oxidation compared to Pt/graphene and commercial Pt/graphene composites, demonstrating that PtCu/graphene can be used as a promising catalyst for direct methanol fuel cells.

Worm-like PtCux alloys oriented by pyrolyzed alginic acid sodium with high performance in methanol electrooxidation

Huimin Li,Zheng Si,Jinli Zhang,Yan Fu,Wei Li

Worm-like PtCu x alloys were synthesized through the co-reduction of H 2 PtCl 6 and CuCl 2 in ethylene glycol under the orientation of pyrolyzed alginic acid sodium (PA), in order to disclose the growth mechanism of different metallic compounds. Through the characterizations of FTIR, Raman, XRD , XPS , TEM , etc., it illustrates that with the orientation of oxygen-containing functional groups in the support PA, the preferentially reduced Pt clusters accelerate the formation of metallic Cu clusters and then worm-like bimetallic PtCu x alloys are generated with plenty of surface defects . The synthesized PtCu 3 /PA exhibits the highest content of metallic Pt 0 (67.11 at%), the average width about 2.19 nm, the lattice strain of −1.18%, as well as the excellent performance for methanol electrooxidation . It has the best CO tolerance ability and the optimal mass activity of 1.922 A mg Pt −1 , which is more than four times of the commercial Pt/C. This work discloses an intriguing growth pathway of PtCu x nanoparticles but also a facile route to synthesize bimetallic alloys with more electrocatalytic activity .

Tailoring the d-band center in Pt-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution via transition metals incorporation

Shaorou Ke,Yajing Zhao,Xin Min,Xinyu Zhu,Xin Li,Bozhi Yang,Fan Yang,Xiaowen Wu,Ruiyu Mi,Yangai Liu,Zhaohui Huang,Minghao Fang

Platinum-based bimetallic catalysts exhibit superior hydrogen evolution reaction performance compared to single platinum catalysts. Most studies on platinum bimetallic catalysts have focused on changing the metals used, with not much attention on how the d-band theory affects the catalyst's performance. Herein, we investigated the additional of different transition metals alters the d-band center for better hydrogen evolution. A method combining the ultrasound processing and in-situ reduction was designed, resulting in the alloys with different stacking orders. As the d-band of transition metal elements in the alloy shifts upwards, the lower the energy of the alloy's d-band center, the better the stability of the adsorption bonding exhibited by the alloy. The PtCu/C, with a hexagonal-close-packed structure and a d-band center at −1.823 eV, has an 84 mV overpotential at 100 mA cm −2 , lower than PtNi/C (89 mV) and PtCo/C (91 mV). It also has 4.75 times the mass activity of commercial Pt/C. As a cathode catalyst, PtCu/C provides improved water-splitting at 2.31 V vs. 2.55 V for commercial Pt/C (at 1 A cm −2 ). This analytical strategy through the d-band center advances the design of platinum-based bimetallic catalysts and offers a new direction for the optimization and development of hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysts.

Liposome-embedded PtCu nanozymes for improved immunoassay of accurate myocardial infarction

Fangming Lou,Han Zhang,Yanwen Wang,Shaojie Wang,Qunfang Li,Dianping Tang

Herein, we developed a platinum-copper nano-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (NLISA) based split diagnostic platform for the ultrasensitive detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI). The PtCu nanozyme synthesized by one-pot synthesis exhibited ultra-high peroxidase-like activity (35.17 U mg −1 ), which was about 4.5 times higher than that of the unmodified Pt nanozyme (8.83 U mg −1 ). Due to the efficient peroxidase-like activity of the copper-platinum complexed nanozyme , transduction and sequential amplification of cTnI biological signals were achieved in combination with a liposome-embedded amplification strategy. The encapsulation efficiency was calculated by introducing a liposomal bilayer model, which showed that the introduction of a single liposomal molecule could amplify the signal up to 870-fold, thus promising a high sensitivity test. Notably, the dynamic response of cTnI was in the range of 0.1–5000 pg mL −1 with an ultra-low detection limit (0.048 pg mL −1 ). The developed NLISA analysis system provides a new way to discover efficient and sensitive alternatives to ELISA kits, which can meet the practical needs of community healthcare testing conditions and rapid testing in hospitals.

pH-driven morphological control of Pt-Cu nanocrystals for excellent catalytic activity in methanol oxidation reaction

Rui Xu,Jingqi Bao,Ningru Xuan,Bingxin Zhou,Lingshan Liao,Qiusheng Zhou,Di Wu,Linfang Lu

The template sacrifice method is a pivotal strategy for synthesizing noble metal-based nanocrystals with enhanced catalytic properties. A critical limitation of this method lies in the challenges associated with regulating the morphology of the resultant nanocrystals. This study demonstrates that the morphology of PtCu nanocrystals can be effectively modulated by adjusting the pH in the Cu 2 O template sacrifice method. Various PtCu nanocrystals, including PtCu hollow nanoboxes and PtCu nanodendrites of differing sizes, have been successfully synthesized. Mechanistic investigations reveal that reduced pH corresponds to a lower electrode potential of Cu 2 O, which enhances its reducing capacity, thereby intensifying the galvanic replacement reaction with the Pt precursor. The driving force of Kirkendall effect during this process can be systematically manipulated via pH adjustments, leading to the generation of PtCu nanocrystals with diverse morphologies. The synthesized PtCu nanocrystals demonstrate significantly improved methanol oxidation reaction activity compared to commercial Pt/C. Specifically, the PtCu hollow nanoboxes exhibit a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity of 1.93 A mg⁻¹, which is 5.4 times greater than that of the commercial Pt/C. Physical characterizations suggest that the superior catalytic performance of PtCu hollow nanoboxes catalyst is attributed to its increased surface electronic density of Pt resulting from the special hollow and porous morphology. The pH control strategy outlined in this research holds promise for the synthesis of other Cu-based nanoalloys with varying morphologies, and may be applicable to other catalytic systems.

Construction of Defect-Rich Ordered PtCu Nanooctahedrons to Enhance Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Shaohui Zhang,Qing Li,Suying Liu,Juan Luo,Yuke Gu,Xuanzhi Liu,Feng Liu,Pengfei Tan,Jun Pan

Defect fabrication is a practical nanosurface engineering to efficiently promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) but remains a huge challenge. Herein, defect-rich ordered PtCu nanooctahedrons (D-PtCu-NOs) were prepared using Cl– as a shape-directing and etching agent. As a result, the D-PtCu-NOs catalyst achieves a mass activity of 1.147 A mgPt–1, which is 10.6-fold that of Pt/C. Meanwhile, the ordered and octahedral structures of the D-PtCu-NOs catalyst enable it to achieve an extremely high catalytic stability for 30,000 cycles. Convincingly, the D-PtCu-NOs catalyst also displays a higher peak power density and long-term durability than Pt/C in fuel cells. Besides, theoretical calculations reveal that the pore defects reduce the d-band center of Pt, lower the H2O formation barrier to boost the ORR activity, whereas the ordered structure inhibits the solubility of Pt and Cu, thereby improving the catalytic stability. This work highlights the importance of defect engineering for Pt-based nanocrystals to enhance the ORR.

Ultrathin PtCu hexapod nanocrystals with enhanced catalytic performance for electro-oxidation reactions

Kai Wang,Rinrada Sriphathoorat,Shuiping Luo,Min Tang,Hongyu Du,Pei Kang Shen

We first report an effective high-yield (∼100%) synthesis of ultrathin PtCu hexapod nanocrystals. The obtained nanocrystals have three-dimensional (3D) accessible surfaces, and the pod diameter is as thin as only 3.57 nm while the pod length ranges up to 15.28 nm. Moreover, the length and diameter of the pods can be well controlled by simply tuning the amount of NaI added into the system. The formation mechanism is investigated based on the experimental observations, indicating that iodide ions play a critical role in forming the ultrathin PtCu hexapod nanocrystals. Due to their highly open structure and ultrathin pods, the as-prepared ultrathin PtCu hexapod nanocrystals have relatively large surface areas as well as abundant tips and thus exhibit enhanced catalytic activity in the electro-oxidation of methanol and ethanol in comparison with commercial Pt/C, state-of-the-art Pt-based nanodendrites, and PtCu nanoalloy catalysts.

Enhanced methanol electrooxidation catalysis via dual modulation of PtCu alloy and oxygen vacancies

Rui Chen,Junfeng Gao,Junting Yang,Fenglong Zhang,Qingchun Wang

Achieved by introducing defect sites, enhances both the catalytic activity and stability of catalysts. This is crucial for advancing key applications in energy conversion and environmental protection. Here, we introduce a novel Pt-Cu@CeO 2 /MWCNTs electrocatalyst prepared by dual modulation of the oxygen vacancy anchoring point and the center of the alloying d-band. This catalyst significantly boosts the rate of methanol oxidation. The Pt-Cu@CeO 2 /MWCNTs catalyst demonstrates a mass activity 3.7 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C, along with exceptional durability. The electron transfer between the PtCu alloy and the oxygen vacancies effectively modulates the d-band center of Pt, leading to a “volcano” relationship between the catalyst’s mass activity and the d-band center. This study advances the development of methanol electrooxidation catalysts by introducing a novel “double enhancement effect” model.
