A dual-functional adsorption–catalytic system for elimination of trace toluene is developed and realized over molecular sieve-hosted varied ratio of platinum and palladium catalysts. PtPd/molecular sieve exhibites PdO and PtO 2 around 2–3 nm particles with uniform loading verified by XRD, TEM, Raman and XPS. The adsorption–desorption–catalysis for trace toluene purification is evaluated on the quartz micro-reactor and the self-made electrically heated equipment. 3Pt1Pd/molecular sieve shows toluene adsorption capacity of 18.22 mg/g and desorption efficiency about 77%, together with the maximum desorption temperature at 100 °C. 3Pt1Pd/molecular sieve owns toluene conversion with 38.3% and 100% at 100 and 200 °C, accompanied with the higher CO 2 selectivity of 0.0% and 150.0%, separately, due to the higher Pd 2+ content. The catalyst displays water vapor endurance, reproducibility, and 83.0% carbon balance during the whole adsorption–desorption–catalysis within 150 min, which highlights the sustainable applicability in lean VOCs abatement. Furthermore, the possible catalytic reaction pathway of toluene oxidation is proposed based on the in-situ DRIFTS experiments.

The direct methanol fuel cell calls for designing various highly active catalysts containing less platinum, still keeping with reasonable stability. In this work, through controlling reaction system under acidic media (pH = 1), ∼3 nm PtPd nanoparticles are dispersed onto the TiO2 support (3PtPd/TiO2) via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route. In comparison with that of homemade Pt/TiO2 and commercial Pt black catalysts, as-synthesized 3PtPd/TiO2 shows a better performance for directly electrochemical catalysis of methanol and simultaneously exhibits high ability against poison from carbon oxide species. Clearly, the optimized usage of anatase TiO2 not only enhances catalytic activity due to the metal-support interactions but also improves long durability, which could be attributed to the OH existing at the surfaces of TiO2 and Pd.

Directed construction of composition-controlled PtPd alloy catalysts. • Pt 3 Pd 3 /NC achieves 1.94 nm particle size and highest metallic state ratio. • Graphitic-N induced strong metal-support interaction enhances stability. • Mass activity reaches 4892 mA mg −1 metal , outperforming most noble-metal catalysts. • In situ SERS confirms non-CO (formate) pathway, avoiding CO poisoning. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) suffer from the high Nost, CO poisoning, and insufficient durability of Pt-based anodes. Alloying Pt with Pd offers a promising route to enhance CO tolerance, yet the stability of PtPd nanoparticles under operating conditions remains a critical challenge. Here, we report composition-controlled Pt x Pd y (x + y = 6) alloy catalysts supported on ZIF-8-derived nitrogen-doped carbon (NC). The equimolar Pt 3 Pd 3 /NC exhibits the smallest particle size (1.94 nm), highest metallic Pt 0 (73.1%) and Pd 0 (79.8%), and strong electron donation from graphitic-N in NC. This catalyst delivers an exceptional mass activity of 4892.0 mA mg −1 metal for methanol oxidation in alkaline media, with 93.3% retention after 500 cycles and a retained current density of 2156.4 mA mg −1 metal after 10,800 s. In situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy reveals a non-CO (formate) pathway, completely avoiding CO poisoning. This work establishes a composition-structure-activity-stability relationship for PtPd alloys and provides a rational design strategy for high-performance, durable DMFC anodes.

In the present work, a high-performance enzyme-based electrochemical sensor for the detection of superoxide anion radical (O 2 ●− ) is reported. Firstly, we employed a facile approach to synthesize PtPd nanoparticles (PtPd NPs) on chemically reduced graphene oxide (RGO) coated with polydopamine (PDA). The prepared PtPd-PDARGO composite was well characterized by transmission electron microscopy , scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra , X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Then the assembled composite was used as a desired electrochemcial interface for superoxide dismutase (SOD) immobilization. Owing to the PDA layer as well as the synergistic effect of PtPd NPs, the fabricated SOD/PtPd-PDARGO sensor exhibited an outstanding sensitivity of 909.7 μA mM −1 cm −2 upon O 2 ●− in a linear range from 0.016 mM to 0.24 mM ( R 2 =0.992), with a low detection limit of 2 μM (S/N=3) and excellent selectivity, good reproducibility as well as favorable long-term stability.

Achieving high catalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) performance of Pt-based catalysts is of paramount significance for the development of direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs). However, the high energy barrier of dehydrogenation of *NH2 to *NH and easy deactivation by *N on the Pt surface make the AOR show sluggish kinetics. Here, we have put forward an alloying and surface modulation tactic to optimize Pt catalysts. Several spherical PtM (M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Pd) binary nanoparticles were controllably loaded on reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Among others, spherical PtPd nanoparticles displayed the most efficient catalytic activity. Further surface engineering of PtPd nanoparticles with a cubic-dominant structure has resulted in dramatic AOR activity improvements. The optimized (100)Pt85Pd15/rGO exhibited a low onset potential (0.467 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and high peak mass activity (164.9 A g–1), much better than commercial Pt/C. Nevertheless, a short-term stability test along with morphology, structure, and composition characterizations indicate that the leaching of Pd atoms from PtPd alloy nanoparticles, their structure transformations, and the possible poisoning effects by the N-containing intermediates could result in the catalyst’s activity loss during the AOR electrocatalysis. A temperature-dependent electrochemical test confirmed a reduced activation energy (∼12 kJ mol–1 decrease) of cubic-dominant PtPd compared to Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrated that Pd atoms in Pt decrease the reaction energy barrier of electrochemical dehydrogenation of *NH2 to *NH, resulting in an excellent catalytic activity for the AOR.

An ultrathin two-dimensional twin-boundary-rich PtPd metallene (TB-PtPdene) was successfully synthesized by salt templating. • Pt-Pd alloying and twin interfaces optimize the adsorption energetics of intermediate products. • TB-PtPdene reaches 1.99 A mg PGM −1 for methanol electrooxidation and maintains stability for 800 h. • In situ FTIR and DFT reveal suppressed CO poisoning on TB-PtPdene. • TB-PtPdene enables direct methanol fuel cells with 14.2 mW cm −2 peak power density. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are regarded as a highly promising clean-energy technology. Herein, an ultrathin two-dimensional twin-boundary-rich PtPd metallene (TB-PtPdene) is successfully synthesized using a salt-templating method. Structural analyses confirm a homogeneous metallic alloy configuration with reduced coordination environments and optimized electronic structure induced by twin interfaces. Electrochemical evaluations show that TB-PtPdene delivers a mass activity of 1.99 A mg PGM −1 , outperforming commercial Pt black, Pd black, and TB-Ptene for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Mechanistic studies reveal suppressed accumulation of poisoning CO intermediates and altered behavior of oxygenated intermediates on TB-PtPdene. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the twin-boundary-rich PtPd structure modulates the adsorption energetics of MOR intermediates and reduces the uphill free-energy change of the *CHO-to-*HCOO step. TB-PtPdene also maintains substantial catalytic activity during prolonged electrochemical operation, with its structural integrity well preserved after stability testing. When TB-PtPdene is implemented in DMFCs, the assembled device achieves a peak power density of 14.2 mW cm −2 , significantly exceeding that of Pt black-based devices. This work offers an innovative strategy for designing MOR electrocatalysts with both high activity and stability, and deepens the mechanistic understanding of the role of twin defects in catalytic processes. Graphical A facile solvothermal method is presented to synthesize ultralong PtPd alloyed nanowires anchored on graphene as highly effective MOR catalysts. The rational synthesis of Pt-based alloyed nanowires still remains a great challenge because of the different reduction potentials between Pt and another metal and the intrinsic feature of isotropic growth in face-centered cubic (fcc) structured Pt. In this work, PtPd alloyed nanowires with ultrahigh aspect ratio anchored on graphene (PtPd NWs/graphene) were synthesized by a facile solvothermal method without the use of any templates or surfactants. Due to the integration of ultralong PtPd nanowires and stable graphene support, PtPd NWs/graphene exhibited outstanding electrochemical activity toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in comparison with pure Pt NWs/graphene and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Meanwhile, PtPd NWs/graphene had a much higher current density than Pt NWs/graphene and commercial Pt/C catalysts at a constant potential for 7200s in alkaline methanol solution. Moreover, after 1000 cycles of durability testing, PtPd NWs/graphene retained 89.2% of its initial mass activity, much superior to the 63.7% retained for commercial Pt/C.

The strong Pt-carbon interaction is a very promising way to high-performance design of electrocatalysts. However, the heavy d-π overlap, a high strength of Pt-C bonding, in sp 2 bonded graphitic carbons with low level of defects is rarely reported. Herein, PtPd nanoparticles and graphitic carbon nanofibers (PtPd/CNF) have been integrated via heavy d-π overlap by an interfacial wettability approach and their formation mechanism has also been fully elucidated. The features of strong d-π overlap and high dispersion of metals offer PtPd/CNF with enhanced ORR activity (5.8 folds of specific activity than commercial Pt/C), and excellent structural stability and electrocatalytic durability. A new “heavy d-π overlap” concept, characteristics, and mechanism are proposed at an atomic-/nanoscale to clarify the generation of the predictive interaction as well as the interface charge transfer. It is believed that the study on heavy d-π overlap sheds new light on the fundamental aspects of the nature of Pt-C interaction.

Radiotherapy is one of the most important clinical cancer treatments, which works mainly by delivering a prescribed radiation dose to the tumor tissues. However, high doses of radiation may also lead many irreversible damages to the surrounding normal tissues. Thereby, how to effectively reduce these side-effects has been a significant factor in influencing cancer therapeutic effect. In this work, we synthesized the hollow PtPd nanocubes with high-index facets, and investigated the radiation protection capability in vitro and in vivo . Our results showed the PtPd nanocrystals can decrease the ROS level and improve the survival rate of radiated cells. Meanwhile, survival rate of radiated mice can significantly increase from 0 to 30% after PtPd treatment. Consequently, the enzyme and ROS level in radiated mice can be recovered.

A facile, low cost and effective method was used to synthesize porous holey nitrogen-doped graphene (PHNG) with three-dimensional (3D) structure via direct pyrolysis of a mixture of urea and magnesium acetate tetrahydrate, followed by treating with hydrochloric acid to remove magnesium cations. The unique structure of PHNG significantly decreases the irreversible stacking of graphene nanosheet , favors the exposure of active edge sites, and enables more accessibility for reactants/electrolytes. The PHNG shows porous structure with a large surface area and can serve as support for nanoparticles . PtPd nanoparticles with different ratios were deposited on PHNG surface to synthesize PtPd/PHNG. The PtPd/PHNG-2 shows high direct oxidation activity towards the glucose, achieving a high sensitivity (52.526 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), wide linear range (100–4000 μM), fast response time (<3 s), low limit of detection (1.82 μM), as well as high selectivity.

Bimetallic single-atom catalysts have garnered substantial interest due to their extraordinary catalytic prowess, which arises from atomic-level synergistic effects that can significantly enhance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics beyond the capabilities of monometallic single-atom catalysts. However, the fabrication of bimetallic single-atom catalysts remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, we introduce an in-situ reduction method to fabricate bimetallic single-atom catalysts anchored on hydrogenated molybdenum trioxide (H x MoO 3 , 0 < x ≤ 2). Intriguingly, H x MoO 3 exhibits inherent reducing capabilities that facilitate the in-situ reduction of some metal ions to metallic single atoms in steps on its surface, thereby enabling the constructing of bimetallic single-atom structures. As a testament to this strategy, the prepared PtM/H x MoO 3 catalysts (M = Ag, Au, Pd, Rh) with ultra-low noble metal loadings (wt% < 1%) on the nano-H x MoO 3 support exhibit remarkable efficiency in HER. Outperforming both monometallic single-atom catalysts (M/H x MoO 3 ) and commercial Pt/C, these catalysts demonstrate enhanced HER performance, and the PtPd/H x MoO 3 exhibits outstanding performance with an overpotentials of 10 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 , Tafel slope of 36 mV/dec, and long-term durability in acidic media. The presence of Pt single-atom significantly enhances the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and accelerates the kinetics of the HER for other metal single atoms.

Long-term exposure to xylene can seriously damage the respiratory and central nervous systems. Xylene poses significant health risks even at trace levels in the ppb range, highlighting the need for the ppb-level detection. Designing high-performance gas-sensitive materials and sensing structures is essential to address high operating temperatures and poor trace detection. In this work, PtPd nanobimetallic-sensitized CeO 2 porous nanospheres were prepared as the upper catalytic layer via solution self-assembly and impregnation, with WO 3 nanofibers as the lower sensing layer to form a bilayer sensor. The 1 wt%Pt 70 Pd 30 /CeO 2 /WO 3 sensor showed the best response (R a /R g = 38.67) to 10 ppm xylene at 180℃, and it demonstrates a obvious response to xylene at ultra-low concentrations down to 1 ppb (R a /R g = 1.4). The sensor also exhibits good stability and notable humidity resistance. By combining in-situ infrared and online mass spectrometry, we show that xylene is catalytically converted into toluene and methyl radicals upon passing through the 1 wt% Pt 70 Pd 30 /CeO 2 layer, significantly enhancing response performance. In summary, the novel bilayer sensor developed in this study enables trace xylene detection at the ppb level and shows potential for environmental monitoring applications.
